Sorting out the SEC East …

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The story on Georgia’s 66-60 loss to Kentucky — and the story basically was that Trey Thompkins and Travis Leslie had dismal days — can be found by clicking here.

Elsewhere in the SEC on Saturday, things got pretty interesting, with the Eastern Division going 1-3 against the much maligned Western Division. Florida lost at Mississippi State. South Carolina lost by 15 points at home to Auburn, which previously was winless in the league. And Vanderbilt lost by 11 at home to Arkansas, the Commodores’ first home loss of the season. In the other East-vs.-West game, Tennessee won at Ole Miss.

The day’s results left the East closely bunched, with Florida still in first place and Georgia still in last. Here are the standings through Saturday:

Florida 5-2

Kentucky 4-2

Tennessee 4-2

South Carolina 3-3

Vanderbilt 3-3

Georgia 3-4

“I knew we would take our lumps in the conference because we have a great conference,” Thompkins said Saturday night.  “I’d definitely like to be on the other end of things, but we’ve got a lot more games to play and we’ll see how it turns out.”

Georgia has lost four of six games since a Jan. 8 victory over Kentucky in Athens extended the Bulldogs’ winning streak to nine games and briefly put them in the nation’s Top 25. The Dogs are 1-4 vs. East teams, with a split against Kentucky and losses to Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Florida.  They are 2-0 vs. the West, beating Ole Miss and Mississippi State.

Georgia’s next two games are against the Western Division -– at Arkansas on Wednesday and at home vs. Auburn on Saturday. The Arkansas trip looks a lot tougher after the Razorbacks beat No. 19 Vanderbilt 89-78 in Nashville, where Georgia lost 73-66 on Jan. 12.  Arkansas is 4-3 in SEC play, second in the West behind Alabama.

It looks like Greg McGarity has his work cut out for him. The football, basketball and baseball programs are in the basement. Firing the volleyball coach isn’t going to be good enough!

No real news here, georgia always makes a fine whipping boy for the true powers of the SEC. Basketball, football, it is all the same, dog fans talk smack before a game and whine and make excuses after the game. It is a yearly routine in Jacksonville

Leslie for sure and Thompkins both need at least another year of NCAA competition as they are no where near NBA quality right now. Leslie may never be because of height limitations and lacking a great jumpshot which he needs to even get a cup of coffee tryout much less be drafted in the second round. Thompson might get drafted because of sheer height and size as a future project, he also might not get that coveted first round guaranteed money he wants. Their play so far is not very compelling reasons to even consider trying to jump to the NBA. Another year at UGA is definitely needed and possibly even more tutulage from one on one coaches and trainers.

The good – Under the former coaching staff, a UGA team down by 15 at the half with it’s 2 best players playing poorly would have lost by about 40 in the end. This team never feels they are out of it because they’re not.
The bad – Moral victories like being in tight games with the best teams don’t cut it anymore. The Dawgs are going to have to get some serious quality road wins to finish with the record they want and need.
If they can keep Clark in check at Arkansas and come back home at .500 with a very winnable game against Auburn at home (regardless of what happened at South Carolina), they still have a great shot at being in the top portion of the east and going to the tournament without being one of the last few in.
Go Dawgs!

UGA would be a decent team if they would learn to play defense and figure out a way to limit turnovers. Their passing and ball handling are among the sloppiest of all the SEC teams I’ve seen play. Fundamentals Fox, fundamentals. Why do we always seem to be saying that about Georgia teams?

Check the remaining schedule for the legue. UGA’s was pretty front loaded. Ky/Fl haven’t even played each other once, we’ve played em both, Ky (2). Things will even out.

Appears that dbc has said everything I had intended to. We never seem to be in the right position on defense, can’t move our feet well enough to keep from fouling somebody with the ball, and are lousy at inside passing. Maybe they need to watch ‘Hoosiers’ again, and again.

The coaching staff missed a big opportunity yesterday by failing to understand what shooter was hot for the dawgs. Leslie and Thompkins should have set more screens and deferred to Dustin Ware, who was red hot, instead of throwing up miss after brick after miss.

Just for the record UGA has never finished last in football since I have been alive (58 years) so all of you DA Yech fans are wrong as usual. But I guess it makes you feel better when we lose but then reality sets in and you realize we own you in both sports. Oh well, it sux to be you.

In the 1986 Jan Kemp trial, O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for UGA, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”

That trial exposed UGA for the football factory that it was, and exposed Vince Dooley as a fraud and a sleazebag. It also derailed Dooley’s plans for a political career. That’s why we see the decrepit old fraud doing TV commercials even now.

Mark Richt is just the latest in a line of sleazy UGA coaches who coddle athletes and discard them after four years of football. He recruits illiterate morons he knows aren’t smart enough for college, but he doesn’t care, as long as they help him line his pockets with millions of dollars each year.

Suntanned Saint Mark isn’t all he appears to be, is he?

We are not going to sweep Kentucky. Sorry, but that isn’t going to happen. We lost to what IS the best team in the SEC, Florida, a team we had beaten if the players followed directions and fouled at the end. We HAVE to beat Arkansas, a team we should beat. We need to drill Auburn by 30. Then we’re off and running. We also need to beat either UT or UF at their place later which is very possible. The rest of the games at home are “must wins.” I still see this team winning 19 or 20 at least and making the Dance.

Last season, we UGA folks were hungy for a 20-10 type of team. We ARE ON COURSE for that still realistic goal. Yes, UGA needs a nice win or two vs SEC’s better teams. UT and Vandy and SC and SC and Arkansas and AU and one or two more are very, very realistic. We also play Xavier late in the season, I think.

If UGA can post 20+ wins, then win one or two in the SEC Tourney, we will have achieved our realisitc goals. To build a championship caliber team is going to take time. If Fox can coach UGA to 22 wins this year and maybe an invite to the Big Dance, GOAL ONE has been achieved.

If Tomkins and Leslie stay on campus ……………… next year could be special, as Thorton and Robinson and the others come along.

This is a huge task …………………..taking UGA to consistent respectability. We all know that and to deny it and say we must win it all now, is foolish.

Go Dogs.

If you take a look at the standings UGA basketball is not last in the SEC. We’re only 2 games back in the east, and we are ahead in the west. If you’ve actually watched any games this year, you’d know that the Dawgs are inches from actually being first in the east. A blown over-the-back call at the last second cost us the game against Tenn. And we went double overtime with Florida, who saved themselves in the first OT on a fluke, nearly half court, 3 pointer.

I agree with an earlier post…..Leslie is no where near ready for the NBA……all hype no substance. Inconsistent jump shot, can’t shoot free throws, lazy on defense. Stands around when offense is running a play unless its a chance for a dunk off a missed shot. Hopefully whoever is advising him will tell him the truth

Good grief, looked at who the dawgs have played so far. That record will improve and maybe even have an upset or 2 in the SEC tourney. I love what I have seen so far. I would be shocked if the did not get into the NCAA touney. They might be 1 or 2 games above .500 in the SEC when all is said and done, but that would be considered a good year. There is still too much room to grow on that team.

this team will not on the road unless it improves…..quit throwing the ball away, making free throws. Cannot see them winning at Florida, Tennessee or Alabama. Only chance would be at Arkansas or South Carolina. Winning at home against Vandy will not be easy. See them finishing 7-9 in league play. That will not get into the NCAA Tourney.

So goes our brief infatuation with UGA BB. We’re back in last place with little reason to believe that will change dramatically. This team’s home loss to FL showed what might have been and gave us what will be. The unwillingness to take charge as the first OT was ending has defined the rest of the season. If you play badly, then we’re gonna whip you good. You play well, we’re going to be content to lose, because that’s what’s expected of us. What a shame. We were so close to proving otherwise.

UGA is the only team in the SEC East to have only played two games against West opponents. Everyone else has played at least three, some even four. In spite of the results yesterday, the West is clearly weaker. The Dawgs will get back in the win column while our division mates are beating each other up. It is a long way until the Big Dance but the Dawgs will be there with their dancing shoes on!

I really thought this was going to be a Good Team. What I have seen is they lack in the Basic’s. Had Uga foulded with a Three Point lead against Gators in the first OT they would have won. They didn’t look like they knew what to do. That’s what I see when the game gets tough. They do not have the Knowledge or experience to make plays. When its going their way they have a rythm. Well that’s only my Opinion.

NewnanDawg

Those saying that this team is sloppy, has bad fundamentals, etc., have obviously only watched 1 or 2 games. Throughout the vast majority of games so far, the passing has been crisp, they looked well coached, and had very few turnovers compared to opponents. They have had a couple of bad games; that happens to most bball teams in a 30+ game season. I don’t expect this team to be perfect for an entire season right now; that’s not where they are. I do think they are very good overall and will finish the SEC season strong. If Fox continues to get improvement on pace with what he has done so far from year to year, then yes, they will be just about perfect in a couple of years.
Go Dawgs!

This team needs to wake up!!! The players are there for a great season. Winning these close games is a must or it’s NIT time. I am a little disappointed in this team, I know they are improved but I thought thay would be much better than this. Even Florida’s coach said he thought we would be the team to beat in the SEC. There is an attitude of underachievment in bulldog sports at this time and it is frustrating at the least.

I also think Trey Thompkins is a little on the overated side. Travis Leslie is an athlete and he can dunk, but that’s about all the credit I can give hime at this point in the season. Price has butter fingers and drops the ball half the time.
