Offensive line coach Stacy Searels got a six-figure raise when he left Georgia for the same job at Texas last week.
Searels will be paid $425,000 annually at Texas, according to the Austin American-Statesman, which on Friday obtained the contracts of the Longhorns’ assistant football coaches through an open-records request.
Searels’ salary represents a $135,000 –- or 47 percent –- raise over the $290,000 annual pay called for in his last contract with Georgia. In addition, that contract included a bonus for bowl games ($19,400 for last season’s Liberty Bowl).
Georgia’s highest paid assistant coach, defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, makes $750,000 per year. No other Georgia assistant makes as much as Searels’ new salary.
Texas will pay new defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, hired from Mississippi State, and new co-offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin, hired from Boise State, annual salaries of $625,000, according to the contracts obtained by the Austin newspaper.

Good riddance. The guy would be overpaid if he was making $1.00/year. Talk about dumb luck… Underperform in every possible way and get a raise that is far higher than most working class salaries in this. Congratulations, Gomer. God Bless America.

Searles was OL coach at LSU in 2007 when they won the BCS. Now Texas hires him. He jumps off the sinking ship in Athens and with a big raise to boot. Sounds like a smart guy to me.
BTW why in the hell would the Fridge come to UGA? Makes no sense.

I can think of several better ways to spend $135K. Included in the list are buying a mid-level sports car and burning $135K in a steel drum.

Not to mention that the state of Texas has no income tax. Smart move. Good for us too. He never earned his pay in Georgia. And do not blame the S&C program. If that was stopping him from performing is job, then he should have spoke up and got something done.

Actually that 2003 (not 2007) and it was his first year there. May or may not have been his doing. Same as the fact that LSU’s running game actually improved the year he left, and UGA’s was pretty good his first year but he inherited a mature line and a couple of fine RBs. Folks can extrapolate whatever meaning suits thier opinion from any of that.
One thing that needs no extrapolation is that he was also the coach of UGA in its worst year in a long time and his position as Oline Coach and Running game coordinator was smack dab in the middle of that.
I have no doubts he is a good coach. I believe the league that Texas plays in is better suited for him. There also are factors that cannot be blamed on him but bottom line: UGA was not a bad running team before he arrived, has gone down hill, as has the offensive line. Whoever is to blame, he wasnt working out.

It is very apparent that Searles got a ” Get out of jail free” card and Won the Lottery all in the same day.

No one else picked up on the real news from this story, and I quote, “Texas will pay new defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, hired from Mississippi State, and new co-offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin, hired from Boise State”. With these two coaches, Texas has hired some major talent! All Searles has to do is fit in. On the plus side for us, maybe Boise State has lost a little bit of it’s offensive mojo.

Seriously, 425K and his only assignment is to coach the OL. That is insane money for that job. Life changing money. He was smart to take it, but that said.
Stop telling me he’s coaching amateurs. Amateur sports don’t generate that kind of money.

Agree with DaRicked. Our coaching hires have been less that average. I did not see any noticable differences in Martinez scheme from Granthams. We were grabbers not tacklers. I did notice that Oklahoma secondary played physical and with passion and intensity. If Searas O line is dominating this year then the finger pointing should go to CMR. And wow who would have every thought that recruiting the top players in state and calling them Dream Team is what Richt is calling cutting edge. Wow just Wow

how many of you dim wits wouldn’t leave a sub par program that is sinking with no sign of improvement. to go to a place where you could make more money, compete for a championship, stop having everbody blame you, coach better athletes, play easier opponents, redeem your name, and leave a bunch of retards behind!!!!! and not have to listen to you guys to boot…… yeah he’s going to regret this alot….NOT!!!
Did he communicate? Was he on board?
January 30th, 2011

Searels never spoke to the media. He did not communicate with his kids in a way that they could sign off on, maybe. I have been told that he was withdrawn, sullen and not outgoing. He seemed to be never happy at UGA.
McGarity and Richt helped him land at Texas. His UGA contract was over and no going forward. He was done. Now, he made some QUICK contacts and I will 100% guarantee that CMR and McGarity gave him glowing marks. It was the right thing to do.
Brown is not locked in at Texas. They were expected to be really great last year. Mack Brown has one more year like 7-5 or 6-6 or even 8-4 ……………. they will hang them all.
No, Searels got lucky and was helped by his former staff. Good luck and CHANGE is natural and healthy for all. He very likely will benefit ( + $150,000) and so will UGA.

McGarity looks liike he’s trying to get Richt to leave. Think about this. He’s underpaying coaches, not extending contracts, scheduling top 10 teams for non-conference games, and renewing the Georgia-Florida game to stay in Florida as opposed ot Athens.

There are alot of schools paying alot of money for coaches,,,Why aren’t we? Do we have a indoor practice facility? (coach Richt has been asking for this for years) I still don’t see the commitment for football from our administration. Hiring the Def coordinator seemed to be the right direction, but it cannot stop there!!! We need to find a high caliber O-line coach and if the Offense does not pick up a new offensive coordinator. I say the president needs to go if there is no improvement in facilties or money.

Excessive Celebration – Coach better Athletes?
Did you watch Texas last year? They were physically pushed around by UCLA. The Texas offensive line was just as embarassing as Georgia’s. If anything, the talent level was a push. The major difference, Texas plays in a conference with virtually no competition and they dominate most of college football in the amount of money they can generate. Most coaches would be foolish to not take a job at Texas if it were offered for the amount of money they can earn for doing the same job.
The real question though, how is Searles an upgrade over Mcwhorter? He’s simply a different guy. Mack Brown threw his entire coaching staff under the bus last year.

Good for Coach Searels. Why would he want to stay at UGA…what with they way all you “fans” wanted him gone? Mack Brown knows WAY more about football and coaching than most of you (as does CMR).
Every article on the AJC.com/UGA has so many negative comments it’s disgusting. And so many comments about how to coach, who to fire, how to administer…ad nausea. Every darn article; not just some. It’s amazing that UGA doesn’t hire the lot of you.

I thought UGA was hurting by having someone like this on staff that got NOTHING accomplished. Just imagine how bad Texas must be hurting to him that big of a raise.

Are you kidding me? We are paying line coaches this kind of $$$$. I can find 50 qualified applicants from the high school ranks who would gladly do this job for $80K in the next hour. Searels is laughing all the way to the bank as well as the rest of the offensive line coaches in the country. “Hey Big Boy………..knock em on their butt and don’t grab their jersey”. That’s about the extent of it. I think I will apply.

The real story here is that of Manny Diaz. Bradley poo-poo’d me last year when I brought Coach Diaz’s name up for DCoord. for the Dawgs. Said he wasn’t a big enough name and didn’t have the experience to be anything more than a position coach for a SEC team. So, he takes Miss. State coordinators job (which I believe plays in the SEC) and parlays that into DCoord. for Texas…..not bad for a coach that Bradley said was nothing more than a position coach.
Just goes to show that Bradley is ignorant on quite a few topics……Mr. Bradley, I’ve got a plate of crow for you when you’re ready to eat.
