First thing first: I don’t know if Ralph Friedgen would take the job, if offered it. Seems improbable, at first blush.
But it certainly has become a hot conversation piece in cyber-corners of Bulldog Nation.
Friedgen, the former Georgia Tech and San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator, the recently ousted Maryland head coach, as Georgia’s offensive line coach and running game coordinator?
Friedgen’s name was floated almost as soon as Stacy Searels left for Texas, although not as frequently as the names of Mac McWhorter and Hugh Nall. The buzz intensified Thursday, when Friedgen was reached by UGASports.com’s Anthony Dasher and declined to comment on the matter, and when the website footballrumormill.com, which specializes in rumors about the coaching carousel, said Friedgen “is in good position to land the OL job at UGA. He’s one of 3 candidates.”
Mark Richt hasn’t commented on the coaching search at all, not even on Searels’ departure. Richt is pretty busy, as you might have heard, on the recruiting trail. UPDATE: And Friedgen’s agent, Jack Reale, seemed to douse the rumor in a conversation with the Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer, telling him: “I don’t think there’s any truth to that.”
Friedgen, 63, does sound like a man who wants to keep coaching somewhere, based on this excerpt from a blog posted Monday by the Baltimore Sun’s Jeff Barker:
Friedgen hasn’t taken another job yet. “I’m interested in hearing that people are interested in me. If something really excites me, I’ll get back in,” he said.
I asked him about some of the college jobs he has been linked to, and where he might end up. He stopped me to make a clarification.
“That’s in the NFL or in college,” he said, not wanting to limit his possibilities.
So what do you think about Athens as a possibility, however remote it might be, for Friedgen?

Friedgen would be a great addition to the offensive coaching staff. He may bring more stability to the offensive play calling too. However, he would need to commit to Georgia for at least a 3-5 year deal. The Bulldogs do not need to go looking for his replacement next year should he come to Athens. Go Dogs!!

Friedgen is one of the best I’ve seen at creating mismatches for the defense. He beat GA three times with inferior talent because he put defensive players in tough spots and kept them on their heels. I don’t think he would last very long with Bobo as his boss. He would need complete control of the Offense if were to be hired.

This would be a genius move by Richt. When Friedgen’s old, fat arse inevitably drops dead from a heart attack, the team will have an inspirational win one for the Fridge cry to rally around. Motivational genius. Keep stuffing his fat face with fried chicken the moment he steps foot on campus. They should hire Fridge as the strength and conditioning coach. Imagine the credibility he’d have with those kids with the way he looks.

He ran a great offense at GT and was the OC at San Diego when they went to the Super Bowl. He won the ACC his first year at Maryland. His problem is he is not a great recruiter.
And he does own at house at Lake Oconee, about 45 minutes from the UGA campus.
But whatever UGA would pay him would be deducted from his payoff from Maryland. So he has nothing to gain financially by taking this or any other job.

dougsmugs- O’Leary and Friedgen are close friends and Friedgen was one of the highest paid OC coaches due to his “value”. He left Tech to become Maryland’s head coach which was always his goal. Get your facts straight before you flap your mug! I hope Friedgen lands a great job somewhere and UGA would be very smart to hire him. With the athletes UGA has and Friedgen’s coaching UGA might make it back to the top. They would have a real head coach in waiting.

Collegeballfan,
I don’t know whether he would have any pay deducted or not by Maryland. He was not bought out of his contract if I understand it correctly. He was paid a settlement equal roughly to what he would have received minus a raise and bonus money as a settlement. I could be wrong.
I am not sure that he would want to work for Bobo unless, it was agreed upon, that he would have a lot of input into the game plan. How could you expect a genius to work for a rookie in this case. Now the perfect scenario would be for Bobo to work for Freiden, and really learn how to coach, and then Freiden would probably move on to a head coaching job somewhere after a year, but that is as likely as me suiting up my 62 year old body, and playing for a college team, LOL. Coach Freiden is no spring chicken either.

I don’t understand this misconception that when our o-line is under performing and we simply do not have an effective running game, it even matters who is calling the plays. As if anyone is going to “call” their way out of that situation. RF or somebody else would be twice as beneficial to UGA IF he stabilized that running game co-ordinator position as he would as OC.

This rumor came to life when he was supposedly spotted in Athens on Wednesday, and then he was contacted by UGA Sports and declined no comment. Before whoever called Friedgen’s agent should have researched this a little bit more. They should have asked him if he is not interested why the heck was he spotted in Athens, GA? Tim I know you write for the underground GA Tech Newspaper but I guarantee you the athletic department would pay him $800k which salary was never mentioned in your crappy article. Also he coached for GA Tech, San Diego Chargers, & Maryland. There is not 3 crappier sports teams in Amercia. Plus if you have not noticed thru the recruiting trail, it looks like Richt finally was told he would be fired if he did not turn it around. In the matter of 2 weeks he has a possible top 5 recruiting class with a team that went 6-7 last season. Why? Because Mark is a lot smarter and a lot tougher than the idiots they have writing the UGA Sports columns for the AJC.

Who knows if RF would be interested, but I can imagine a situation where he served as OL coach and offensive consultant. It could be a great situation giving Richt and Bobo a chance to practice what they preach…competition makes you better. RF may not want the responsibility of coordinating the offense at his advanced age.
If I were Greg McGarity, I would strongly encourage Richt to hire RF and spend this summer exploring ways to add some innovation to the offense. Maybe for one year Richt should put his missionary work on hold and concentrate on football. My guess is that Saban would do so without being asked!

Its a thought to bring in Friedgen… on that on the surface makes a lot of sense. But Tony, here is the problem… everyone talks about his success at other programs and the success he had at Maryland. I will point out though, that the ACC has been down in recent years. Having said that, bringing in a guy to be the Oline coach and running game coach you would like to see a little more success on the resume than Fredgen demonstrated at Maryland. Listed are the rushing statistical rankings of Maryland from 2004-2010. In parenthesis are UGA’s ranking for that year.
2004 – 94 (48)
2005 – 76 (37)
2006 – 61 (67)
2007 -69 (38)
2008 – 57 (54)
2009 – 107 (46)
2010 -78 (69)
If as the head coach, you are unable to improve your run game in the ACC, I am unsure of how much you can contribute to the ability to run the ball in the SEC.

Hello UGA fans. I am currently considering taking the OL job after a generous offer from Mark of $200K…..and getting to learn under one of the best….Mike Bobo. This makes way to much sense. Forget that I was confusing opposing defenses long before Bobo was first trying to grow that walmart goatee. It doesn’t matter that I have more qualifications in my toes to be an OC than Mike Bobo has in his dreams. There is no indignity to be suffered by taking an OL position under a great like Bobo. I promise…I will not slap his goatee off after he runs the 3rd and long inside counter out of the shotgun for the 3rd time in one half of play. As the OL coach…I will see to it that his genius is illuminated by making that 3rd and long inside counter work. I will also be oh so happy to support the over abundance of play action….even if we don’t have an established running game. I can’t wait for this opportunity to be the UGA OL coach….under the supervision of Bobob.

If bobo was moved to RC and QB coach and Friegden brought in to be the OC would be a brilliant move. Otherwise I don’t see the Fridge coming to Athens to be an OL coach, no way. Guys, some of you are idiots saying you wouldn’t want the fridge. This guy was SICK at GT. He mixes his attack up and keeps the defense on it’s toes at all times. He can beat you running or throwing and understands the game as well as anyone. We could score on anyone at anytime with the fridge as our OC but the issue was our defense as it is once again now. We can score but can’t stop anyone along with special teams as a nightmare.
If you guys land big ralph, you will rise to the top in the SEC as soon as your defense is fixed because your offense will be as good as any in the nation with the talent you guys get and with him calling the plays. I hate uga because we always lose of course but i respect the uga program as it is a great program. I hope you don’t get him because that means we have to face him and that will not be good for us! The guy is a fantastic hire if you give him control of the offense. You will not be disappointed!

Let’s not be silly. This man just won coach of the year in the ACC year and was an offense COORDINATOR (not line coach) for a super bowl team. There’s no way this guy goes to Georgia for anything less than a coordinator, and last time I checked, Georgia already has one of those on the offensive side of the ball. This rumor is about as likely as Kirby Smart leaving Alabama to come be your defensive coordinator last year. You Georgia fans are too gullible.

Bottom line DawginLex, and look deeply into this statement. “You have to believe in your Leaders if your going into battle and give your all.” This is psychology 101. We have questioned our Leaders, don’t you think the kids, in their hearts have questioned their Leaders? The moves being debated hopefully will come to fruition, if they do, my belief is these kids will give their all and we will see an immediate difference in their attitude, intensity, and performance.

Coach Freiden could surely help UGA, but I do not think he could unless he is an offensive coordinator. He is much too great a talent to keep as just the O line coach. He is a man of integrity also, and his prescense alone, would garner respect from the players and alumni. I just don’t see it happening though because Bobo is the OC and I do not think that CMR would downgrade Bobo’s position. One possible scenario could be assistenat OC and line coach. As long as Bobo was willing to learn from a master, that would be a great mix. When you consider, how he was even able to turn Maryland into a winner, and recruit pretty decently, considering the crowded recruiting base in the NE, you can realize just how much he could mean to UGA.

Obviuosly, you know nothing about coaching and are on here simply to make stupid rude comments about UGA. I was born and raised in Maryland and understand how politics runs everything in that state. A washed up coach, as you call it, does not make conference coach of the year. Thier athletic director has visions of Maryland being a top 5 team in the country. He thinks that the coach they hired will do that. He is wrong I believe but, he has to keep the money givers and politicians happy up there.

This could be an ideal hire IF Bobo is humble enough to learn more about game strategy, play-calling and in-game adjustments. Bobo seems to be an excellent QB coach and recruiter. Maybe someday he will be an excellent Offensive Coordinator. He is NOT one yet (due to predictablility, getting away from what is working during a game instead of doing MORE of it – see GA Tech 2010 as just ONE example). It is rare that a man is humble enough to take instruction once he is “in charge” of something, in this case, the offense.
For the Boboites out there, it’s not about how many points we scored in 7 games this year. It’s about points being left on the field, which has cost us games or made blowout victories into nailbiters. IF we had a terrific defense, we could afford to leave those points on the field. But, right now, we can’t afford wasted drives due to play-calling or in-game philosophy. Our offense STUNK against Central Florida, and was weak during the 4th quarter this year. This is not a “fire Bobo” post. It is pointing out the potential wisdom of hiring someone who can coach Bobo up as OC, so that our team can be coached up…… Go Dawgs!! We got Ray Drew!

Vance and others, I believe McGarity has forced the current staff to “check their egos at the door” and do what’s best for the program. We will see, there have been small changes so far, if RF does come, and RG does leave, Bobo moves to RC and QBC, as has been hinted at by insider, McGarity’s stamp is all over this program as far as who’s in “control”.
Even if this doesn’t happen, change is still necessary, otherwise, it will be business as usual. With this “phenomenal” recruiting class and the current staff, we will improve, but will never reach our potential.

I like the thinking by several posters of Friedgen being the OC and Bobo coaching QBs and taking title of recruiting coordinator. Bobo has shown his gift in recruiting this year. He appeared at the Drew signing even though Drew is a DE. If Garner is willing to take O line, let him. If not, perhaps its its time to go. And let Friedgen take OC and OL and bring in someone like Travis Jones (former Dawg, Saints assit D-Line coach so knows 3-4) to take over DL.

Why would anyone want to walk into that fire at Athens. Sure Richt is having another one of those recruiting years, but that just builds up the pressure and if he doesn’t win which I don’t think he will it gets everybody fired. I think a player says he is going to Georgia and he gets a star for that automatically. Then he is a bust, happens year after year up there. Instead of blowing the trumpets on this class I would be having a wait and see, but the horse is out of the barn now. What is the definition of stupid? When you expect different results using the same formular over and over. One thing about Ralph Friedgen is he may be fat but he ain’t stupid, which doesn’t seem to work well at Georgia.

If Georgia really wants to compete with Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, Auburn, LSU and the rest of the SEC, UGA needs to have a reason for athletes to go to come. Right now with Ritch, Bobo and the gang it is about as exciting as watching paint dry or watching soccer. Let’s call it like it is… UGA is a subpar program that has not done anything since the early 80’s. UGA needs to make a bold statement to athletes that when you come we will compete with anyone in the country. Leach brought a last tier team in the Big 12 into prominence. Just think of the possubilities in the SEC with the talent that is in Georgia and the Southeast.

My football buds and I said Freidgen would go to Maryland and underachive and although he did win an ACC champ, I would say he did…….just not enough good players. UGA WOULD BE VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE RALPH FREIDGEN AND ALL HE HAS TO OFFER AS A GREAT OC!

Buckeye, when you guys start winning bowl games on a regular basis then your comments may be relevant here. You have thew best criminals money can buy and the NCAA did not punish you for their transgressions. Arkansas did not play 60 minutes so count you blessings and mail the NCAA your payoff. My advise to you is keep a low profile and start watching for your Daddy, Meechigan is back and will be spanking you annually if get my play on words. Go play in the snow or watch your overrated basketball team lose in March to a SEC team as usual.

If not, Hugh Nall woudl be great choice great, loyal DAWG – tough as Nails, hard working player in HS and college. He would instill a level of toughness and work ethic we have been missing on the OL. This is a guy at the office, in his cubicle bored killing time on his Friday trying to get a rise out of all the back and forth.
Look guy, beieve what you want but if what you said where true then you would not have Conferences like the PAC 10, Big 12, Big 10, Big East, ACC all killing themselves to gain some market share that the SEC has.
SEC drives the bus in College football and if you are not a fan of the SEC then you are a hater. It is as simple as that, and its ok. I have plenty of schools I cannot stand, but I don’t visit the websites and act like a troll on them. So if you wanna act like a troll knock yourself out, but don’t spurt out opinions as facts.

@Do You Guys:
Yeah, everyone outside of the South worships the NFL..which is about to be locked out (that’s alright though, because you’ll still have your COLLEGE football to watch, right). Tell me, are you a fan of the Cleveland Browns or the Cincinnati Bengals? Neither has been relevant in MANY years.
And I sh*t you not, the NFL and “Fantasy Football” has become nothing more than jokes. I’ve actually watched games with people where they were more concerned about what was happening to their teams in Fantasy Football versus what was actually occurring in the real game! That’s the definition of pathetic..that or having 50 year old grown men standing in sub zero temperatures with their shirts off and painted from head to toe in their team’s colors.
Again, if your precious NFL is locked out next year, we in the SEC will be happy to kick OSU’s a$$ again next year (if y’all even get to a bowl-might be hard with those 4 starters-including your QB-riding the bench for the first 5 games).
Idiot.

DawginLex – Relax. People get on these vents for one of three reasons. 1) they are a fan of the team and want to have intelligent conversations with other fans. 2) they are fans of a rival team and want to talk a little sheet. or 3) they troll blogs and pick fights with other people because they have nothing better to do. It is very easy to hide behind a keyboard and protect your identity in order to talk smack and get someone infurriated. Most of these people got beat up in high school and have never really been good at any sport. Sure, they can get on here and say that they were all state and that they would have played in the league if it wasn’t for that nasty knee injury, but, you and I know better. Don’t fall for it. We also play in a Conf that produces National champions every year—The big O would have a hard time surviving the cut if they had a schedule that played UF, Alabama, Auburn, and LSU—then you would get a break and only have to play Arkansas, SC, and Miss ST. I do not see him coming to UGA as the O.C., but it sure would be nice if they could somehow hire him as say, “Offensive Consultant” or something like that. His purpose would be, to help Bobo learn how to put together maybe, a better game plan, and how to adjust the offense during the game to take advantage of the situations that arise. I believe Bobo could turn into a good OC with a little more training and supervision. Coach Freiden would be a great teacher and mentor. I know that CMR, will probably have more input into the offense this year, but it sure wouldn’t hurt to have the experience that Coach Freiden could bring to the table.

Bobo turn into a good OC with a little training and supervision…….??????? What kind of statement is that? Either your a student of the game or not. Either you work with your strengths or you try to fit a round peg into a a square hole. Bobo has not a clue to study other successful coaching and incorporate it into his own game plan. Bobo’s play book last year was either to studder step the fullback up into the hole that the running back was going (dead give away to the play) or play action pass from under center and wait for a long route to develope. Defenses were running down hill as they say on GA last year. Murray was getting killed. I remember the call in show for Ark a caller asked when did Murray’s chin get busted…..Richt laughed and said he got hit so many times he couldn’t remember….WHAT?????…….you idot’s….then a caller asked why do you run only play action from under center and not mix it up with shot gun formation…….Richt said that play action worked the best for them….WHAT??????……I screamed the whole game run more quik slant, drag a receiver across the middle about 5 yards ( just like Ark did all day and it killed us), and for god sakes run a freakin 3 or 4 receiver set and run a draw play ( they did start this against Col with success) or pitch the ball in a miss direction of the play. Bobo and Richt should have worn out the hash with Orson Charles…hardly saw that…..all those good receivers and backs aren’t bad, but when your play book consists of virtually the same stinkin Sh@t…come on. Kiffen turned Crompton into a decent quarterback with a 5, 10, 15, 20 yard slant package….and you know what..they moved the ball….against stiff defenses. YOU GOT TO UNLOAD IT WHEN THE D IS ON TOP OF YOU. Create some breathing room and keep those blitzes from coming on every single play (D runing down hill on us) Dink and dunk to open up down field! That’s how the pros do it. GRANTHEM WILL BE FINE NEXT YEAR, THE QUESTION IS WILL OUR OFFENSE CONTINUE TO BE A LIMP D%^K!

I am just wondering how you get to be a good OC, without training and supervision is all. We can rehash all we want about last year, but it seems to me that Bobo still needs some training but I also believe that experience is a great teacher as well, so hopefully he will be better this year. If the offense doesn’t show good improvement this year, then I say, we get a new OC. Lack of supervision and training falls on the HC so, I believe we will see that improvement as I believe that CMR, can get the job done. I hope the changes the AD and HC have made to that side of the house will show improvement and get the ship going in the right direction. I hope that whomever gets the OL position can do a good job also. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DAWGSSSSSSSS

THE REST OF THE SEC IS LAUGHING IT’S ASS OFF AT THIS HIRE. GEORGIA DOESN’T HAVE THE COACHING TO EVEN COMPETE WITH THE AUBURN’S, LSU’S AND ALABAMA’S. KIRBY SMART ( GEORGIA’S OWN) REJECTED GEORGIA LAST YEAR.
LOTS OF DREAMING AND NOTHING EVER BECOMES OF IT!

The buck stops with the OC. Stacey Searles is one of the best in the business, but when your play calling is so predictable, that negates a lot of positives. One will not win on brute strength alone. Everybody is strong. You have to play with creativity and keep a D on there heels. Bobo’s play calling hasn’t changed in……how many years? Bottom line is that he is really not that good…..GA paying him a lot of money to be mediocre……most learn from mistakes..he just hasn’t. Poor play calling and turn overs has sunk GA’s O and that is a glaring reality. Putting points up against inferior foes and padding a pts average is not very impressive.

my choice for a fat former head coach as OL coack would be the great pumpkin Phil Fulmer. Evan as HC he still worked with the OL.

Phil Fullmer was only formidable when he had David Cutcliff running the O! He was the straw that stirred the drink at UT. When he left they were a dumpster fire. When he returned they were winners again.

Man how things have turned around on this blog. Apparently CMR pays no attention to the negatives on this or any other blog.

Ya’ll stupid idiots on here, get off BoBo’s arse.
He is bringing the best recruiting class in history
to Georgia and you are too stupid to realize it.
Why do you think the South Georgia group,
Valdosta, Colquitt and Thomasville decided to
come to Georgia, Richt and BoBo have a plan.

Shankit….Bobo has had talent and has yet to figure out what to do with it. Richt is obviously sticking with Bobo, so they are going to revamp the playbook or both be gone next year.

C’mon big baby. We got a whole lotta big brotha’s that can dwarf you, but sit right next to ya.
You would help our offense, in one, or two ways, depending on how long you stay.

We need Dave Johnson as our O-Line coach. he coached our Tight Ends for several years and put those guys in the NFL. He has been the O-Line coach at WVU the past couple of years but still loves UGA.

How bout Friedgen as an OC not a OL Coach? Youre joking right? How bout putting Booboo at the OL and a real Coordinator Friedgen as OC. Now i could see that happening.
FRIEDGEN i wouldnt take that offer unless it was as an OC. Thats embarrasing ! Hes better than that. See here they go again not knowing where to utilize their talent. Havent you guy’s learned anything yet?

Better hire 2 OL coaches, Richt. If Bobo doesn’t work out, then you could use The Fridge at OC.

Dave Johnson would be the best choice. He coached at UGA during CM’s best seven years and is was loved by players. His WVU team beat Fridgen’s team by about 31-15. Dave’s 0_line blew them out.
