Healthy Sturdivant is ‘dreaming’ about spring practice

ATHENS — This is the first January in three years that Trinton Sturdivant is not rehabbing from knee surgery.  Come March, he’ll participate in spring practice for the first time in three years.

“I’m actually really excited about it,” the UGA offensive tackle said Tuesday. “I’ve been dreaming about it sometimes.”

Season-ending knee injuries in 2008 and 2009 resulted in surgeries and long, arduous stretches of rehabilitation, but Sturdivant made it through the 2010 season healthy and looks forward to 2011, his senior season.

He said he considered “pretty seriously” the possibility of entering the NFL draft but “came to the conclusion it’d be best for me to stay here” for several reasons.

“I graduate in December with a degree in finance and management,” he said. “And my goal coming in to Georgia was to win, and I don’t want to leave on a losing note. . . . Another reason it’s a good idea I stayed [is] to make the GMs in the NFL feel more comfortable about drafting someone with two ACL [surgeries].”

Sturdivant said he was “disappointed at first” about offensive line coach Stacy Searels‘ decision last week to leave for the same job (and higher pay) at Texas, “but I talked to him and it was a good business move for him. I’m confident coach [Mark] Richt is going to hire a really good offensive line coach.”

Richt eased the offensive linemen’s concerns after Searels’ departure, Sturdivant said.  Richt “talked to us about how the calls weren’t going to change, the blocking style wasn’t going to change too much -– only, like, small techniques. So hopefully it won’t be too much of a transition.”

Sturdivant started all 13 games at left tackle as a freshman in 2007, then missed the entire 2008 season after blowing out his left knee in preseason camp. He made it back by the start of the 2009 season, only to reinjure the same knee in the first game, starting again the surgery-rehab cycle. He started seven games during the 2010 season, his workload increasing as the season progressed.

After all that he has been through,  Sturdivant clearly is happy to be healthy, happy to be here. . . .

“Even though we had not such a great season . . . I love being at Georgia,” he said.

Now this is the kind of athelete that all of college football could use, not just Georgia. Somehow we have to get back to recruiting these young folks in football out of high school and let them know, that it is a gift to be able to go to a major university/college, and not their right just because the good lord gave them a special skill. This young man, no matter what his future employment outlook holds, will be a gigantic success, mostly because he has his priorities straight. I will bet you that he will fill the void of senior leadership on the DAWGS, and be a good example of a young leader. Lord knows, with a lot of the high school kids we have coming in, his talent and skills will be well used. Part of playing at the next level from high school, involves maturity as well as the physical skills. I admire a lot of these young folks skills, we have coming in, but frankly, some of their immaturity kills me, and their supposed sense of entitlement. No matter the age, they have to grow up rather quickly or the “Dream Team”, will be just that; A dream. I realize they are still young, and I know what I am about to say, will open me up to a lot of cheap shots, but, when I was their age, I was getting drafted, and prepared to go to Viet Nam, and I grew up rather quickly, LOL. It took me years to get my degree, and I sure would have loved to get a free education. I did get the GI Bill, but believe me, it did not and would not have paid for an education to a fine university like Georgia.

I think as a whole team they have failed to hit the weights the way other programs have. This is not really what I think the problem is but I think a lot of our fans feel this way. I’ve got news for you woebegong. If that draft advisory board had told Sturdivant he was a likely 1st, 2nd, or maybe even 3rd round selection he would have been a goner. All this sentimental crap about honoring commitments and getting a degree is just that, CRAP. These schools know damn good and well that the guys they recruit are eligible for the NFL draft after 3 years. The only people that act all shocked and surprised about it are ill informed fans. A scholarship is only good for a year. Had Sturdivant left early he would have honored his commitment to UGA. To say otherwise is simply not true and has no basis.

Thanks.

What???

January 26th, 2011
9:35 am

Just because guys can lift a lot of weight doesn’t mean they are in the best shape to compete in the 4th quarter of hard fought games. Do you really need a safety to lift like that? No. You want him to basically be able to sprint for hours at a time. I think the S&C philosophy has not been very advanced and this is a good example.

Howl&Woof

January 26th, 2011

TerpDawg, our strength and conditioning program may not have been the problem but the bench pressing numbers you quoted are not really relevant. As Claude Humphrey, All Pro defensive end, once said: “seldom in the course of a football game do I get the opportunity to bench press somebody.” This was his response when asked why he was so good when he could only bench about 250lbs! I personally believe football is more about explosiveness than brute strength. Strength matters, but only when it results in quick explosiveness.
One thing I would like to see is replacing mat drills with something more relevant to specific positions. Mat drills are absolutely HELL for the big linemen. I doubt in this era that we get much benefit from making guys puke in trash cans months before fall practice begins. I also doubt that mat drills are a big selling point when recruiting “big uglies”!

I too am a little worried by Richt’s comments about nothing is really going to change on the offensive line. What? The line needs some kind of a major overhaul in S&C, technique, scheme, etc. We were terrible last year with a veteran group. I truly want Richt to succeed but I’m starting to think he just doesn’t get it. McGarity is not going to put up with failure in the football program so Richt needs to make some serious changes. But I wonder if he will.

JB, I think the answer to your question is EDGE. At programs like BAMA and UF they demand their players work hard and compete. Players at those schools are worried about their security and standing with the football program. Saban even gets rid of underperformers if neccesary. This EDGE comes from the top and Richt just doesn’t create that type of environment. In fact it seems Richt has some kind of seniority policy and reward for upperclassmen. How hard are you going to bust your rear if you don’t have to fight tooth and nail for your position? Richt must change and let every player know that they better step up because the best players are going to start and the slackers are going to ride the pine.

I think I have every right to have my a$$ on my shoulders after a 6-7 season. You can go ahead and stick your a$$ up your backside and pretend that things are all honkey dorey. I choose to live in reality. After two knee surgeries and an underwhelming 2010 season, Sturdivant is no more ready for the freaking NFL than I am. The fact that he was “exploring his options” means that he wants to leave UGA. Why else would he “explore his options?” Its not a good sign. Its just not. You can spin it all you want, but its not a good sign.

You know what’s also not a good sign? A losing season. But I always find myself defending perfectly reasonable comments on here about the state of the program. Some of you are turning in to Tech fans.

We suck – Richt is accountable.

UCF game did me in.

Remeber beating Clemson, 2002, in Athens. 4th and long 1 – inside our 50. we make the 1st down – we win. If Clemson holds – they get the ball and a chance to win.

Well, a young/hungry Mark Richt sent a message to his team and UGA fans- we are here to win – UGA went for it – got the 1st down.

IN 2010 – UGA drives 90 yards – 4th and 12″ at the UCF 3.
IF UGA goes for it – they get a first dwon – and probably a touchdown.
If UCF holds – they have real crappy field position
Well. our CEO and mature Mark Richt sends a messgae to his team and UGA fans about trying to get 6″ against UCF -and we kick a field goal in a pointless bowl. A victory for UCF – and they go on and win the game.

WE suck – Richt is the HC – need new leadership.

Do you blame the kid for at least exploring the possibilities in the NFL considering the state it is in. Yes I am sure he can and will improve his stock by staying this year. That does not by any means cheapen his commitment to UGA and he will get his degree in December. Not in basket weaving either. He studied hard and let’s not forget, his leg problems he has had to fight through just to get to play again. He has a good head on his shoulders, represents UGA proudly and is an example for others to follow. I am surely not niave enough to believe that 95% of college football players don’t have NFL stars in their eyes, but give credit, where credit is due. This young man is what college players should strive to be.

For a young man to leave school and go to the NFL is not and should not be such an issue. I really think that when folks scream that so and so kid moved on from the U of SO and SO that they are jealous. It is a CAREER move. Career move it is. Here is one example:

I went to and graduated from UGA in 71. I pal of mine there left school to go work for a resturant fabricator co in Marietta. He never finished his degree. Sad?? Bad move??? He DID LEAVE UGA.

He is about to retire from a national rest. chain that he is SVP of and heads up their construction and he is a MULTI millionaire. See?? We did not hate him for that 1970 career move. He was then in 1970 making some nice $$$ and always has. He TOOK that opportunity that required him to leave college. Duh.

My point?? College offers all kinds of opportunities beydond just an education …………. whether it be in the NFL or maybe in business or some other field.

Do not begrudgfe these kids when that money opportunity calls. No way should we begrudge any of them. WE would do the same thing.

11:06 am

I do think that Richt’s overall policy is to love and coddle the kids. He is just that way in his self perceived role as counselor and mentor. He likes to SERVE the Lord that way. It is the way that it is. This is one reason that he connects with their mamas. I do not mean to sound disrespectful of any entity here.

Now that is fine ………IF some one or some group of coaches are the Hammer. Most any football system or Army or business organization has to have ………….. the Hammer. I am somewhat concerned that when a Hammer arrives ( TG in 2010 ) that CMR immediately reigns that in. The curse language on the practice field, the loud outbursts by one coach or other, the in your face yelling, he does not tolerate.

If this scenario is close to accuracy …………….. then a divided house will fall. THIS AREA is a major part of the lack of cohesion on the UGA squad. Jimmy Carter called it in his day “love and restraint” toward Iran and it did not work then, nor will it work now.

Go Dogs. Year 2011 is about to get cranking with sigining day and the die will be cast going forward. The new O line coach will be telling.

McGarity's input

January 26th, 2011
11:14 am

McGarity will have to be 100% involved in the hiring interview process of any O line candidate for UGA. Why? That person will absolutely be concerned about the future. In other words, he will ask “what about next year, if we do not achieve say 9 or 10 big wins”, including Florida?

It is for this reason that McGarity will have to sit alone with the O line candidate and assure him that if in the event of a HC transition, he will vouch for him, barring a complete O line breakdown and urge the new HC to keep him on board for a year more.

This is tricky. I wonder who besides someone very, very close already to UGA would jump in and take this O line position? Dicey it is. For this reason, I see a UGa man as the likely O line candidate …………… Matt Stinchcomb or Hugh Nall or maybe McWorter who has been my choise since he left Texas. His family has done so much fo UGA and he was an AA O line player himself.

McWorter is highly qualified more than anyone in football and he and Richt would absolutely mesh, philisophically. His resume is superb.

Where are these young men in their progressions. I know that the JAX kid blew his knee out in HS two or so years ago. Has he rehabbed? Will he play? He was considered ( pre injury ) the # 4 O lineman in the USA. Tops in Florida he was.

Will these men contribute? Also, we got the LaGrange O line kid Burdette, two years back. Where is he in his progression? He supposedly was very bright ( class valedictorian ) and a fabulous O line prospect.

Anyone know about these kids?? Now, if they are as good as advertised, UGA ought to be knee deep in O line talent, along with the incoming kids and journeymen linemen .

Go Dogs.

Richt “talked to us about how the calls weren’t going to change, the blocking style wasn’t going to change too much -– only, like, small techniques. So hopefully it won’t be too much of a transition.”

Please tell me the small techniques will teach the lineman how to pass and run block!!

I agree with One Thing Could Change In Athens. Why do our coaches act like the players won an Olympic gold medal when they make a good play? Has anyone ever noticed this? A d-back makes an INT and he is showered with hugs and pats on the head like he’s in freaking pee wee league. I mean I get excited too but good grief, its his job to make that interception. Championship calibre programs expect things like that to happen. If an Alabama player makes an INT Saban might clap a time or two and give him a pat on the back, but that’s it. He’s already moved on to the next play after about two seconds. I mean geez. Act like you’ve been there before.

I would like to say thank you for Trinton deciding to come back for his senior season no matter the reason. I noticed as the season progressed he started looking like the Freshman All-American again. Now as to the inconsistency on the offensive line a lot of that has to do with all the changing of personnel as we have seen the last three plus years so these guys could not develop into a cohesive group knowing what the guy next to them was going to do in certain situations. Some of the people on here seem to have no clue as to what it takes to play on the offensive line. It doesn’t take much for a play to be blown up by missed assignments, the one thing I have noticed a lot is the on line adjustments just seemed to be missing and that comes from familiarity with the other 4 to 5 guys on the line in specific situations. I also noticed we were playing guys out of their natural positions which also added to the inconsistency. Hopefully with a new O-line coach that will change, maybe Richt will hire Johnson back from West Virginia.

No one on here knows crap about what 2011 holds. It is all like your backside with opinions, everybody has one and some stink worse than others.

I do know this.

2010 was a horrid crap fest from the get go.

AJ not playing got this team looking over their shoulder from the beginning wondering when he was going to come back, who was going to make a play.

You can call it homerism if you want to but this team was not that far away.

17-6 SC key fumbles near the goal line and key dropped pass
31-24 Arkansas game was tied with 2 minutes to go. Allowed a sack and had to punt back to Mallett. Late TD
24-12 MSU Game was close throughout. More fumbles and a horrible penalty on the long TD cost us points
34-31 Florida(OT) speaks for itself
49-31 Auburn-Only game that could be classified as a blowout. Turned on the opening kickoff of the 2nd half.
10-6 UCF-Microcosm of the entire season. Crapfest where the D kept us in it.

Now, I see a team that easily could have won 10 or 11 games.

Reality is, they didn’t.

Now the heat is turned up on Richt.

If the new S&C program doesn’t pay off, someone else will be coaching the Dream Team in 2012.

I think the approach from now to kickoff will determine their season. They really have to bring the pain in the weight room this summer. Signing Jenkins and Drew would REALLY be keys to helping this defense cause pressure. These kids should love the fact that UGA really has no depth at their positions, which would mean almost unlimited playing time at a school that has a proven track record of putting players in the NFL. Something is telling me UGA might fix this problem because Richt knows he is on the hot seat.

Richt has provided ample evidence particularly the last three years that:
1. Richt can’t beat Florida under any set of circumstances or conditions. UGA’s coach should be expected to win 50 percent of games with Florida, not two out of ten.
2. Richt can’t beat the SEC’s best coaches. Heck, he now can barely beat Vanderbilt and Kentucky, and Miss. State now has a coach who will get in line to kick Richt’s sorry coaching A$$.
3. Richt’s often mentioned winning percentage is heavy with La-Laf, Idaho State teams. And while on that topic, Petersen is grateful to UGA for giving Boise a soft start to open up with(except this one isn’t gonna help Richt’s phony winning percentage).

That said, he may, or even probably, will improve things from their present state, they really couldn’t get worse. But will he be successful? I don’t think so….Especially in one year, so basically we’re looking at him “rebuilding” the program from scratch at this point. Best case scenario would be 2 to 3 years, can we afford to take that risk? I guess we can, after all it’s only a game, but there is an awful lot of people that spend an awful lot of money on the game. It hasn’t been a very enjoyable expendature the last 3 years….

You see with Richt that’s what you get, you never really have an idea of how they will perform. I could also see that IF we could somehow win the first two we could gain some powerful momentum, take off and really roll. By the time we get to UT, UF, there’s some confidence, we win those two, man up to AU, we’re undefeated. DawginLex was 100% correct

January 26th, 2011

You are 100% correct in your review of the 2010 UGA season. You left out the Colorado game where Caleb FUMBLED and that blew a last few seconds shot at a FG in that mile high stadium; although our kicker Walsh, did shank one earlier. He likely coulda/woulda/shoulda made that kick.

SC game was a tough, physical game and SC wanted it ……… you could see it. We did blow our shots though, with over thrown and underthrown passes just beyond or behind the receiver and then our man WashedOut Ealey’s 3 yd line routine fumble.

Orson Charles shoulda/coulda caught one on the SC 8? yd line but it was slightly behind him. Bad pass and bad attempt at the catch by two lifelong buds. That relationship is not paying off for UGA. Murray more than “forces” the ball to him over and over and did so in the Liberty with three guys covering Orson. Why? Where was AJ????

Yes, with some luck UGA should have won 3, maybe 4 more and yes, that includes Florida. In the Florida game, Aaron Murray just choked like he did in the Liberty Bowl. In both of these games he looked exactly like he did in the 2010 G Day game. Uptight and stiff and nervous beyond imagination and unable to see over the line. In the Liberty with those Batman gloves ………. I sort of washed my hands of him. We shall see with Lemay coming in and how well Hutson Mason develops. I am very concerned that Murray is a choke artist.

Agree that Murray has shown nothing yet, except that maybe he can’t get it done. Also agree it would help if he could see over the line of scrimmage. Count’em next year, the number of passes batted down at line of scrimmage. Note here, recent as well as past trends with successful college and pro Qb’s, six-four, 240, able to see over the line, and maybe if needed, shoulder their wey to a short-yardage first down. Typical Richt, learn nothing about successful trends. UGA had one such Qb, now LSU has him. So let’s lose with the midget instead. Typical Richt, no discipline, many of his “great recruits” are bad characters who never play much or at all.

Mark (another one)

January 26th, 2011

I hear all the complaints and watched a few game tapes, and I really believe the only issues on offense were the occasional blown block and a complete lack of a consistant power running game. Defense is another matter as our core got ripped. Our middle linebackers and nose need to step up. We consistently lost on run defense and were weak in run offense. That said, it believe one of two better players on each side of the ball could make the differnece. Esp. Nose and running back.

TS is a stud. Freshman All American and finally back healthy. If I were him, I would have checked the NFL. Think about it. He has suffered two major injuries in back to back years. He knows that any day on the field may be his last. This is true for all players but he has suffered the injuries and had the worries. I am just happy his decision was/is to return.

During the Alabama bowl game, ESPN stated that the top 4 all time bowl WINNING teams are 1.)Alabama, 2.)The REAL SC and 3.)PN State and 4.) UGA and we had just LOST to SW by NE by South Central Florida at Pensacola.

Now, Richt has contributed to that 26 win total. Bama at # 1 has 37 wins. PN State just ahead of UGA with 27, had just lost to Florida. HAd UGA won vs UCF, we would be tied with PN State at # 3 all time bowl winner. Not bad company folks. Watch the UGA haters get on to this record. My my.

Richt won the Cap One vs Michigan State, the Sugar Bowl vs FSU ( free shoes u ) and vs VaTech ( sad lil ACC ) in the Chic Fil A and Texas A&M in the mighty Weedeater ( tech’s permanent destination ) and Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. Richt has at least 5 or 6 wins in bowl games.

My point is that he can win with the right combination of assistant coaches and if these men and the new O line guy can redirect them ……………. UGA should be fine. UGA can win 9 or 10 if they work hard. They MUST defeat Florida however, for me to have any confidence in the new direction. Period. Richt knows this. They ALL know this.

Otherwise, UGA will make the HC change or not and our overall bowl record will be one of the top rated. That is called TRADITION. This is why UGA is recruiting well in Georgia.

hey great your coming back, but sadly don’t look for improvement over last season T.S., georgia just not the program that everyone thinks it is, we just always going to be looking at flordia, alabama auburn and all the other sec schools better than us. i’m not a new uga fan i’ve been one for almost 35 years so i’ve seen alot, dawgs just always seem to come up short, i’ve just accpected and moved on. good luck next season.

What if Richt wins 9 regular season games, including florida?

wins the Capital One Bowl 10-3 record 5-3 SEC

Loses to SC, MSU and UT

Do you really think McGarrity will run him?

I don’t.

You know the schedule is pretty easy.
Richt has won 96 games in 10 years.

It is not out of the realm of possibility.

Can you answer my question instead of bashing away?

Guess not. The statistical probability of him winning 9 are actually better than your prediction of another crappy season.

Win with Richt you are about as delusional as Charlie Manson. Richt won his early years because he had Donnan’s players and he had not become a CEO like his daddy at FSU yet. The rest of the SEC laughs there a$$ off at Jawja fans. You either are predicting NC’s or SEC C’s or whining about the Refs cheating you.

You’ve been on here complaining about o-line play for 3 years now.
Maybe CMR will give you a call for advice, you seem to know what’s best for TS and the DAWGS.
Your bashing of CSS every week was getting old, his O-line ranked 2nd in fewest sacks allowed in the SEC. Not bad for an O-line blocking for a freshman QB.
Sturdivant covered Matt Stafford’s blindside in 07 as a freshman and never allowed a sack!! Look it up!!!!
Sturdivant worked his butt off to come back after 2 ACL surgeries, and to come back and get his degree tells what kind of work ethic he has.

AltahamaDawg
your post at 7:08 pretty much sums up your work ethic!! Late for the school bus!!!

If Richt wins games in which the tailback gains 100 yds, then why don’t we see if we can get a tailback to gain 100 yds? Mike Bobo does not see the need in establishing a power running game. If you make the same decisions that did not work, you will get the same result. RUN THE DAMN BALL!

DJ was the first to sign, but he was already being recruited by UGA before Richt was hired. Richt had very little to do with the first class that signed after he was hired. As you can see in recruiting, many kids have already decided way before the football season is over. During a head coaching change some kids may back out but not all. 80% know what school they wish to attend no matter the coach.

I think the bigger story of spring practise will be on the other side of the ball. We basically had an entire defensive unit going into the spring as redshirt freshman. Not only will they ge going into this spring not just learning what to do and can just go full speed, but they now have real game experience to relate the instruction to. There has to be a much bigger impact from instruction when its not “you are going to see this”, and “remember in X game when this……. here on film when that”.

We need some different bodies and playmakers to be top notch, but even with the guys on roster right now, they are going to go into the season much better prepared. We’re talking a defense that only needed to give up 3-7 points less to have done thier part last year. Could probably be reduced to (in a couple of the losses), give up about 2 less long third downs.

The line hasn’t been quite the same w/o him in there. Thought he did quite well this year considering that he had to get the thought of injuring the knee again out of his head.

He should have a tremendous Senior Season. This kid is a leader. Valedictorian of his Senior Class in High School 4.0 in high school and graduating with a degree in finance and management.

Damon Evans is now gone; but he did a terrific job of making sure that Georgia was first about getting an education. For those who may try and trash this, please do not make me hit you with the facts of where Georgia stands in the conference and nationally. You could even make the argument that this is part of the reason that the football program is down. If so – so be it; then you go through that adjustment phase and move forward.

Very solid recruiting class coming in – avoid some injuries and suprise some folks next year. Always better to come from under the radar – look at Auburn.

DJ Shockley was Mark Richt’s 1st recruit. He closed the deal.

Shockley stayed 4 years and sat the bench behind David Greene and then won an SEc title his senior year.

He was and always will be a DGD in my book. He got injured the week before the Florida game or we would have lit Meyer’s rear end that day. He was about 80% against Auburn the next week.

That team could have played for the BCS title without the injuries and Richt recruited every last one of them.

Yeah all stafford did was win 31 games in 3 years in college, sign the richest pro contract in history, get himself set up in Detroit to be a hero next year and get more trim than you ever dreamed of.

He is a real loser alright.

Hopefully we can sign Crowell and have a decent running back lining up behind him that actually can
gain some yardage. Also, Sturdivant will be able to protect Murray’s blindside and Richt’s backside (aleast for 1 more year).

You know…all of you who have such negative things to say about Trinton are just wasting your breath & your time because he, nor any other player on the team, pay any attention to CRAP and that’s exactly what I was reading.

I know him personally and he’s not only an amazing football player and leader but a great person all together. All of you who are giving him less than constructive criticism right now are the same people who were singing his praises in this freshman season when he was the #1 LT in the nation and UGA went 11-2. You are the same jealous people who were rooting for him in the 07 sugar bowl against Hawaii. The same people posting get-well-soon comments in 08 & 09

But now you wanna bash him because it’s taking him time to get back to where he was? HA. Please explain to me how any of that makes sense. I would like to see any of you go through what he’s been through and still have a passion for the game. Still put your mind, body, soul and FUTURE on the line in practice and every saturday. This man has been to hell and back for something he loves and I’m sure that’s more than most of you can say.

He is a great offensive lineman, maybe not quite back to his 2007 self but it takes time. Just wait…soon he’ll be back protecting our QB like never before and you’ll all be cheering for him yet again.

And to answer the question about why he was considering the draft….you get seriously injured twice in college and see if you don’t wanna take your chances elsewhere too….
