Healthy Sturdivant is ‘dreaming’ about spring practice

ATHENS — This is the first January in three years that Trinton Sturdivant is not rehabbing from knee surgery.  Come March, he’ll participate in spring practice for the first time in three years.

“I’m actually really excited about it,” the UGA offensive tackle said Tuesday. “I’ve been dreaming about it sometimes.”

Season-ending knee injuries in 2008 and 2009 resulted in surgeries and long, arduous stretches of rehabilitation, but Sturdivant made it through the 2010 season healthy and looks forward to 2011, his senior season.

He said he considered “pretty seriously” the possibility of entering the NFL draft but “came to the conclusion it’d be best for me to stay here” for several reasons.

“I graduate in December with a degree in finance and management,” he said. “And my goal coming in to Georgia was to win, and I don’t want to leave on a losing note. . . . Another reason it’s a good idea I stayed [is] to make the GMs in the NFL feel more comfortable about drafting someone with two ACL [surgeries].”

Sturdivant said he was “disappointed at first” about offensive line coach Stacy Searels‘ decision last week to leave for the same job (and higher pay) at Texas, “but I talked to him and it was a good business move for him. I’m confident coach [Mark] Richt is going to hire a really good offensive line coach.”

Richt eased the offensive linemen’s concerns after Searels’ departure, Sturdivant said.  Richt “talked to us about how the calls weren’t going to change, the blocking style wasn’t going to change too much -– only, like, small techniques. So hopefully it won’t be too much of a transition.”

Sturdivant started all 13 games at left tackle as a freshman in 2007, then missed the entire 2008 season after blowing out his left knee in preseason camp. He made it back by the start of the 2009 season, only to reinjure the same knee in the first game, starting again the surgery-rehab cycle. He started seven games during the 2010 season, his workload increasing as the season progressed.

After all that he has been through,  Sturdivant clearly is happy to be healthy, happy to be here. . . .

“Even though we had not such a great season . . . I love being at Georgia,” he said.

January 26th, 2011
3:37 pm

During the Alabama bowl game, ESPN stated that the top 4 all time bowl WINNING teams are 1.)Alabama, 2.)The REAL SC and 3.)PN State and 4.) UGA and we had just LOST to SW by NE by South Central Florida at Pensacola.

Now, Richt has contributed to that 26 win total. Bama at # 1 has 37 wins. PN State just ahead of UGA with 27, had just lost to Florida. HAd UGA won vs UCF, we would be tied with PN State at # 3 all time bowl winner. Not bad company folks. Watch the UGA haters get on to this record. My my.

Richt won the Cap One vs Michigan State, the Sugar Bowl vs FSU ( free shoes u ) and vs VaTech ( sad lil ACC ) in the Chic Fil A and Texas A&M in the mighty Weedeater ( tech’s permanent destination ) and Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. Richt has at least 5 or 6 wins in bowl games.

My point is that he can win with the right combination of assistant coaches and if these men and the new O line guy can redirect them ……………. UGA should be fine. UGA can win 9 or 10 if they work hard. They MUST defeat Florida however, for me to have any confidence in the new direction. Period. Richt knows this. They ALL know this.

Otherwise, UGA will make the HC change or not and our overall bowl record will be one of the top rated. That is called TRADITION. This is why UGA is recruiting well in Georgia.

Go Dogs.

They really ruin every blog. No more for me. Thanks for the memories!

OK, everybody, let’s not go gaga about everything we’re going to do “next year.” There’s no credibility in that–it’s dreaming. Let’s look at actions and deeds.

Preacha Man’s gotta go!
The “Tan Man”, the “Marlboro Man”, the PhD Candidate for Football Theory needs to get out of town with da Water Girrrrl asap…

That would be better than recruiting ten Dream Teams…

Win with Richt you are about as delusional as Charlie Manson. Richt won his early years because he had Donnan’s players and he had not become a CEO like his daddy at FSU yet. The rest of the SEC laughs there a$$ off at Jawja fans. You either are predicting NC’s or SEC C’s or whining about the Refs cheating you.

You’ve been on here complaining about o-line play for 3 years now.
Maybe CMR will give you a call for advice, you seem to know what’s best for TS and the DAWGS.
Your bashing of CSS every week was getting old, his O-line ranked 2nd in fewest sacks allowed in the SEC. Not bad for an O-line blocking for a freshman QB.
Sturdivant covered Matt Stafford’s blindside in 07 as a freshman and never allowed a sack!! Look it up!!!!
Sturdivant worked his butt off to come back after 2 ACL surgeries, and to come back and get his degree tells what kind of work ethic he has.

AltahamaDawg
your post at 7:08 pretty much sums up your work ethic!! Late for the school bus!!!

If Richt wins games in which the tailback gains 100 yds, then why don’t we see if we can get a tailback to gain 100 yds? Mike Bobo does not see the need in establishing a power running game. If you make the same decisions that did not work, you will get the same result. RUN THE DAMN BALL!

DJ was the first to sign, but he was already being recruited by UGA before Richt was hired. Richt had very little to do with the first class that signed after he was hired. As you can see in recruiting, many kids have already decided way before the football season is over. During a head coaching change some kids may back out but not all. 80% know what school they wish to attend no matter the coach.

I think the bigger story of spring practise will be on the other side of the ball. We basically had an entire defensive unit going into the spring as redshirt freshman. Not only will they ge going into this spring not just learning what to do and can just go full speed, but they now have real game experience to relate the instruction to. There has to be a much bigger impact from instruction when its not “you are going to see this”, and “remember in X game when this……. here on film when that”.

We need some different bodies and playmakers to be top notch, but even with the guys on roster right now, they are going to go into the season much better prepared. We’re talking a defense that only needed to give up 3-7 points less to have done thier part last year. Could probably be reduced to (in a couple of the losses), give up about 2 less long third downs.

The line hasn’t been quite the same w/o him in there. Thought he did quite well this year considering that he had to get the thought of injuring the knee again out of his head.

He should have a tremendous Senior Season. This kid is a leader. Valedictorian of his Senior Class in High School 4.0 in high school and graduating with a degree in finance and management.

Damon Evans is now gone; but he did a terrific job of making sure that Georgia was first about getting an education. For those who may try and trash this, please do not make me hit you with the facts of where Georgia stands in the conference and nationally. You could even make the argument that this is part of the reason that the football program is down. If so – so be it; then you go through that adjustment phase and move forward.

Very solid recruiting class coming in – avoid some injuries and suprise some folks next year. Always better to come from under the radar – look at Auburn.

DJ Shockley was Mark Richt’s 1st recruit. He closed the deal.

Shockley stayed 4 years and sat the bench behind David Greene and then won an SEc title his senior year.

He was and always will be a DGD in my book. He got injured the week before the Florida game or we would have lit Meyer’s rear end that day. He was about 80% against Auburn the next week.

That team could have played for the BCS title without the injuries and Richt recruited every last one of them.

Hopefully we can sign Crowell and have a decent running back lining up behind him that actually can
gain some yardage. Also, Sturdivant will be able to protect Murray’s blindside and Richt’s backside (aleast for 1 more year).
