Cordy Glenn returns, but will have new coach and maybe new position

ATHENS – When offensive lineman Cordy Glenn decided last week to remain at UGA for his senior season, rather than enter the NFL draft, he didn’t know he’d soon be getting a new coach.

But that will be the case, with the departure this week of offensive line coach Stacy Searels for the same position at Texas.

“I’ve spoken with Coach,” Glenn said today. “He just told me he loved me, and he wished us the best. It was a business decision; he had to do what was best for him and his family. I respect him. It’s a business at the end of the day.”

Glenn said he has no inkling who might be hired to replace Searels, but “I’m positive Coach Richt will bring somebody great in for us. I just want to play football. I really don’t care who the coach is. I just want to play.”

Speaking of playing: Glenn, who started all 13 games at left guard this past season, said he expects to play “a little tackle” next season.   How much? “See how the season goes,” he said.

Glenn said he decided to return for his senior season for several reasons: “improving my draft status, getting closer to my degree and just helping this football team out.”

——-

Cornerback Brandon Boykin, who also decided last week to forgo the NFL draft and return for his senior season, said today that last season’s 6-7 record was “a disappointing season that nobody really was proud of” and that he didn’t want “to go out on that note.”

He said he’s encouraged by changes in the strength and conditioning program, and convinced the 2011 season will be much better.

“I think we’ve hit the ground running with this off-season program that you’ve heard a lot about, and everybody has high hopes,” Boykin said. “… Everybody really does feel we have a great chance to compete and win the SEC this year.

“Coming off [this past] season, nothing is going to be laid back at this point,” he added.  “We’re not happy with where we ended, and everybody has that type of mindset that we want to get back on top. They definitely implemented that in the strength and conditioning program.”

Another reason Boykin decided to return for his senior season: He said he’s on track to graduate in December, meaning he can leave for the NFL next year with his degree in hand.

And what’s up with all the bama fans on here? Nothing to talk about on the Tide blog? Understand the facts, bama fans, your Saban does not love bama, he failed in the NFL like Spurrier and a $4 mil. paycheck paved the way to Tuscaloosa. He will turn on you soon and bye, bye! Dawgs fans, the top two linebackers weren’t on the field last year during the games. Richard Samual and Jarvis Jones were KILLING it on the practice squad! They both REDSHIRTED last year and will have instant impact this fall. Bean Anderson and the big guy from Mississippi (if we can get him to come to UGA) will be a massively different D. This fall should be way more fun! I want Richt to stay. If we can’t do it this year with the recruits…it will be a long 3-5 years for UGA.

We did bank on it or took a with-drawal and banked that our 4 million investment would surpass your investment in “Tan Man”. Guess what 36-5 last 3 years with a championship. All expense paid trips to lets see Pasadena, New Orleans and Orlando. How did those trips to Shrevport and Memphis work out for your “Bank on It”. @Ward: Grantham needs more than one year to get his system going and get the right personnel. He had to take the players available last year without a trut NG. He needs at least one or two more years to get it in place.

@German Shephard Dog: Hugh Nall is happy in his job where he is and I would be surprised to see him leave it. Coaching is unstable and, frankly, an OL position at UGA doesn’t pay enough to abandon his current career. Look at the way Auburn treated him. Those were his guys blocking for Cam Newton this year and look at the credit he gets.

Bow wow… is there anyone in the state of Georgia that does not have an opinion on the UGA coordinators? My opinion is that college football is big buisness and those that have the responsibility for creating and maintaining revenue know a lot more about all that is going on than I and most folks. I know what I see on TV/Sanford field and read on the AJC which is probably the extent of 99% of those that comment.

Really stupid for people to start suggesting UGA could win a NC next year. REALLY stupid. Let’s see if we can beat Tennessee and Florida in the same season for the first time since 1988. Let’s see if we can beat Boise State led by a Heisman candidate at QB (they will be just as good people). Let’s see if we can beat a very much better South Carolina program and not allow a second straight loss to them. Then I may believe Richt has it turned around. But for now, I don’t expect much to change. Anything less than a 3-1 or 4-0 start will doom Mr. Richt.

@ Mike:

Yeah, hate to say it. Auburn’s going to be weak next year. You know the difference between their 8-4 season 2 years ago and their perfect season last year? Cam Newton and Nick Fairley (who both came in for last season and are now leaving). ALSO, need I remind you that Auburn is losing their top wide receiver AND 4 of their 5 offensive linemen..umm..good luck replacing all those losses (not to mention Auburn will STILL have their anemic secondary in place).

And Bama can replenish (which I’m afraid of as a Dawg fan) but they are also losing Mark Ingrham, Greg McElroy, Julio Jones, and some seniors on both offense and defense. It will be hard to replace each of those key components so I must say that UGA has a fair chance of winning it all. LSU will be our biggest competition in the West but UGA doesn’t play LSU or Bama next year. Florida has the new coaches and the players who were perfect for Meyer’s system but not what Muschamp is bringing to Gainesville, Auburn will be down and UGA only plays @ Tennessee, Vandy, Ole Miss, and GA Tech next year. Boise State will practically be a home game (in the GA Dome) and FL is always neutral. I think UGA can make a run based on these facts…

kgb, you hit the perverbial “nail on the head” thing with Grantham and Richt. He did it to Van Gorder too. Told them they were being too “over the top” so to speak. By the time BVG left the program, his defenses were on the way down! But going back to what you said. Grantham was not the same after the first game. Know why? Cause some players momma heared her son getting cussed out over a stupid mistake made on the field. I’ve said this for a while now too people I know. but if CMR ain’t careful he has already hired his replacement. That would be CTG in my honest opinion. The guy has way more credentials than Richt does. Don’t be surprised if all our departed LB’s aren’t drafted by an NFL team.

I also have to respond to people saying UGA is gonna win this and that and has a chance hear and there. We, yes and including myself in the past, have talk about how all these possibilities can occure if this or that happens. I just can’t anymore. I just don’t believe Mark Richt knows how to be dedicated enough to consistantly beat the other coaches in the conference. I mean I hate to say that, but the facts are there. You know I may be wrong. He may not be smart enough. It is after all a huge chess match that must be won or lost in the manner of one hour not counting time outs and intermission. If CMR could get back the magic he once had of coarse everything would change. But one can oviously tell he is just not that into it. Making boys into men and productive citizens is a great banner to hold up. but I question motivation. See, if he can’t motivate himself to be the “best darn football coach in the USA” how is he going to motivate others?????????

here comes “tide roll” again with his racist overtones about how UGA is racist becasue the entire offensive line isn’t black. May I point out, Johnson drafted by the Falcons from Bama is very white. you meantion Zach DeBell falling in the ranking because he is white…and all the other kids you mentioned you say “do not have a chance to play for their dream team” they are all black. Truth is, Zach DeBell was offered on potential. He is 6ft 7 265…too light to play right now…but, great feet and physical stength. He projects to 6ft 7 315 after a red-shirt year and the weight room. As for those other players, most of them, if not all of them, hold UGA offers…Jujwan was one of UGA’s top priorities last season and chose to go to TN. UGA will put what is perceived as the best players on the field. If those perceptions are wrong, those coaches will be fired and replaced. That being the case, they are not going to let color (either way) cost them a job. Your theory would suggest there are no elite white offensive linemen. Ever hear of Joe Thomas, Jake Long, or the greatest player in the history of the University of Alabama according to the top 100 players all time in the NFL per NFL.com…John Hannah..check them all…they are melanin deprived.

Boweevil look at the depth chart and the guys that where recruited last year and this . The team has a couple of Lb’s on the charts But lets talk about the Holyfield fight dude got killed in two round. He got beat up a little bit and then said I DON’T WANT NO MOE. The fix had to be in. Holychump is a bum. Where is the champion I remember from the 90’s. Is it that bad that he take a two round beating to get a check. As a matter of fact he never took a beating. Rodney Garner is an excellent coach. Take a look at some of the D lineman he has developed, who now play on Sundays. I for one do not want to get rid, of him.
The Dogs will be allright, now that we have an Athletics Director, who isn’t preoccupied, with a life of wild times.
McGarity has taken Richt and the boys to the wood shed and now they are back focused and ready to go.
Evidence #1 look at the coahes intensity out on the recruiting trail, this year as compared, to the last few seasons.
Also I bet Richt will be much more involved in the Offensive game planning and play calling this year.
Richt now knows his gluteus maximus is on the line.

Tom:

As someone who is close to the Glenn family, I can tell you his comments exactly reflect the character of this young man – loyal and supportive and positive.

I will also tell you that he was near inconsolable regarding the loss of his position coach last week. IF he had known his position coach was going to leave, I am certain he would have declared for the NFL.

On another note – who do you think is the better UGA Head Coach – Richt or Fox?

In terms of getting the most out of the talent on hand, I would have to say Mark Fox is the far better coach. Coach Fox’s talent level on the court represent, at best, the mid-level talent in the SEC whereas Coach Richt year in and year out recruits the top tier talent of SEC football players.

Coach Fox and his staff appear to have the ability to recruit good players and make them better. Coach Richt and his staff appear to have the ability to recruit great players. Period.

I just had to chime in to the dawg blawg to get my laugh for the day. Seems I’ve read several dawg posters on here saying the dawgs have a legit chance of winning it all this year. Are you guys smoking a newly invented supercrack or something? You really think this pathetic 6-7 team that lost to UCF in a bowl game and loses AJ Green can win it all? Good grief.

Then some of you kool-aid drinkers compare yourselves with Bama which has a real legit chance of winning it all this year. Bama is ranked no 2 to no. 4 preseason 2011 depending on which poll you look at. The reason? Bama returns 9 starters on D, returns 4 of 5 O-lineman, and its recruiting classes the last 3 years were no. 1 in both 08 and 09 and no. 4 class last year. The tide will certainly end this year most likely as the top class yet again for the 3rd time in 4 years.

What’s that about Ingram leaving? Its okay. Got Trent “the beast” Richardson coming back. Mich state can also tell you a thing or 2 about our 3rd tailback Eddie Lacy. Julio Jones gone? So what. We got every other receiver back and have been stockpiling them for years. New QB? So what. AJ McCarron is the real deal. Taller, more talented than Greg McElroy, superb in backup duty and limited play, the man is going to rock the SEC. BTW your midget aint even in the same league as this qb.

You guys will be back to back 6-7 and Richt will be fired. Deal with it LOSERS!

What is his position?

January 23rd, 2011
10:46 am

Would someone splain what position Mr. Kent Tureen plays?

UGA can always go 9-3 or 10-2 or better, and occasionally 8-4, if UGA signs EVERY year, solid, beefy and smart O linemen and D linemen. We don’t do that and then we become desperate due to normal attrition and flunk outs.

We have over looked this strategy for years and that is why late in games, we are getting abused. My wife knows nada about college football or pee wee football for that matter, and she recoginzed this to be true of UGA line play. Fix that and UGA can win again. Folks, this is not neuro surgery.

GO Dogs.

What has Bama done lately?

January 23rd, 2011
10:51 am

Alabama had one wodnerful year in 09. NC and congrats. Year before that, they were blown out and abused by Idaho State or Utah in the Sugar Bowl. They were stomped.

Bama was nothing in 2010. They had the team of teams in August BUT ………….BUT Saban could not deliver. It is over for Alabama for another 20-25 years. AU owns them now in recruiting. Saban will not hang around to see Alabama be dominated by AU. His ego will not allow that.

If Saban does not win the NC in 2011 ……………..he will take another gig. He is a wanderlust kind of guy. Period.

These things run in cycles. Alabama is on the way down. See 2010 and that proves it.

Folks, HOPE IS NOT A METHOD!

Great to hear seniors like Cordy Glenn and Brandon Boykin want to finish out at the Red and Black. It isn’t business, it’s love. If Searles was doing a 9-5 job for business, good riddance.

Unfortunately, no amount of player enthusiasm will make up for the total lack of passion or leadership that Mark Richt displays. My wife, who isn’t a football fan, remarked that he acted as if he had no interest or passion for coaching while she watched him on the sidelines during a game last season. He just doesn’t have it in him, and no amount of studying football will cure him. In addition, Mike Bobo is definitely in over his head. He just doesn’t get it and probably never will. At best, he should be returned to QB coach and probably just dismissed.
If you want to win championships, you need “the eye of the tiger”, not the lamb. If you want another SEC championship, we need a coaching staff of lions. Currently, we have the lambs.
Winning will not return to UGA until we have a winner at the head coach position.
Adams and McGarrity are burning daylight every day that they put off the inevitable.

Red Dog 77, I just read your blog. I’m sorry, but you are not thinking soundly. It does not take ten years for a new coaching staff to turn a program around. Look at any of the SEC teams that whoop up on us now to see. No matter how long it takes to turn it around, it can’t get any worse than what it is: a losing season and losing a bowl game to Central Floriday! Come on! Every day that we delay the hard decision to cut Richt’s tether is another day that a new coach will need to turn it around. Hope is not going to change a thing. Try to look at it objectively. Any objective analysis points to the fact that Richt has to go.
