Cordy Glenn returns, but will have new coach and maybe new position

ATHENS – When offensive lineman Cordy Glenn decided last week to remain at UGA for his senior season, rather than enter the NFL draft, he didn’t know he’d soon be getting a new coach.

But that will be the case, with the departure this week of offensive line coach Stacy Searels for the same position at Texas.

“I’ve spoken with Coach,” Glenn said today. “He just told me he loved me, and he wished us the best. It was a business decision; he had to do what was best for him and his family. I respect him. It’s a business at the end of the day.”

Glenn said he has no inkling who might be hired to replace Searels, but “I’m positive Coach Richt will bring somebody great in for us. I just want to play football. I really don’t care who the coach is. I just want to play.”

Speaking of playing: Glenn, who started all 13 games at left guard this past season, said he expects to play “a little tackle” next season.   How much? “See how the season goes,” he said.

Glenn said he decided to return for his senior season for several reasons: “improving my draft status, getting closer to my degree and just helping this football team out.”

——-

Cornerback Brandon Boykin, who also decided last week to forgo the NFL draft and return for his senior season, said today that last season’s 6-7 record was “a disappointing season that nobody really was proud of” and that he didn’t want “to go out on that note.”

He said he’s encouraged by changes in the strength and conditioning program, and convinced the 2011 season will be much better.

“I think we’ve hit the ground running with this off-season program that you’ve heard a lot about, and everybody has high hopes,” Boykin said. “… Everybody really does feel we have a great chance to compete and win the SEC this year.

“Coming off [this past] season, nothing is going to be laid back at this point,” he added.  “We’re not happy with where we ended, and everybody has that type of mindset that we want to get back on top. They definitely implemented that in the strength and conditioning program.”

Another reason Boykin decided to return for his senior season: He said he’s on track to graduate in December, meaning he can leave for the NFL next year with his degree in hand.

We need more staff changes to get better… Having Searels leave is a great thing for us, but now we have to get rid of Garner & Grantham; demote Bobo to QB coach or assistant offensive coordinator and bring someone else in to call plays… Then I can be excited.

Quite worrying about the coaching staff. It is taking care of itself….

dawg149- I totally agree! Everybody blamed Martinez, & now certain people are blaming Grantham & eberyobdy else. He worked under Saban befoe, & he said he was one of hte best assistants he’s had work for him. It was his first yr. implementing a 3-4. AL. struggled in saban’s first yr. implementing it as well. I’m really starting to think that UGA has just lacked the play makers on defence here lately, bc it can’t be everybodies fault. I just hope we can keep un the good recruiting so far, & I’m sure if Grantham gets the players the defense will be better.

If anyone can, take a look at the dawgs 1st game last year – Grantham had the defense fired up all game long and really showed his passion and the defense really responded. Now take a look at the next weeks game with SC and see the difference. If Grantham had been wearing a muzzle I would not have been surprised because the lack of fire by the defense & Grantham was fully evident for all to see. The defense was much softer. It’s pretty clear Richt sat him down and let him know his high energy behavior was too much for the low key Richt.

It seems I heard about everyone having to compete for their job at every practice for the last year or two. Now, it being said like it some new idea. As CR has demostrated loyalty to coaches and players
over the years, that where the mind set needs to change. It’s a hard cold fact, but CR will reward his senior players with playing time, indifferent to their production. Many of our players would have been riding the bench if they had played for Urban at Florida.

Tim. This dream team’s offensive line recruits are lacking big time. Who’s evaluating these kids? After his appearance in the U/A game Dabell dropped an incredible 150 spots completely out of the Rivals 250. Why aren’t in-state kids like Chance Warmack, Roke Watkins, Ed Christian and Jujuan James, and Xzavier Ward given the opportunity to play for their dream school?

@ Ward, Grantham doesn’t need to go anywhere. The defense was much improved this year with probably slightly less talent. I have no doubt that UGA will finish with a top 20 D this upcoming year and Grantham will be one of the major reasons why. Ward, you know not of what you speak. That being said, gotta get big John Jenkins this weekend, sew up Crowell, and if the Turene rumor is true, things are really rolling. Go Dawgs!!!

Does anyone ever notice that AJC writers comment on their blog only to the simplest questions or the easiest answers while some that ask legitimate great questions go unanswered constantly. Sure seems like they are doing just the bare minimum of their job. Here is a prime example. Preston asks: Where is Turene committed to? Tim responds: USC (west) and he is visiting UGA

WOW THANKS TIM GREAT INFO! Given you are a paid uga analyst for the AJC, id expect some better insider knowledge, blog management and question answering skills.

UGA used to win on running the ball and playing defense. We haven’t done much of either for a while now. For UGA to win, we’ve got to win time of possession and stop opposing teams on 3rd down. Pretty simple.

While it’s important to note that strength and conditioning has an apparent new-found focus, that should have been obvious. It’s football — key success elements, among others, are strength and conditioning. Championship teams, appropriately led, don’t lose focus, any year.
