‘Wrong number’ rings up recruiting violation for Richt

ATHENS –  Mark Richt returned a missed telephone call, thinking the number belonged to the mother of an East Hall High School football player Georgia is recruiting.

Instead, the number belonged to a younger football player at North Hall High School.

So what, you ask?

So the mistake constituted an NCAA secondary violation that resulted in Richt being banned from calling recruits for a week last September.

This glimpse into the minutiae — some would say silliness — of the NCAA rulebook was revealed in 40 pages of documents released Tuesday by UGA in response to an open-records request from the AJC.

The documents show that Georgia reported 14 secondary violations of NCAA rules in eight sports in the last six months of 2010.  (Secondary violations are defined as inadvertent rule-breaking that does not result in a significant competitive advantage. ) Richt’s phone call was typical of Georgia’s self-reported minor violations.

Here’s how it occurred, according to a Sept. 3 letter from UGA athletic director Greg McGarity to SEC commissioner Mike Slive:

… On Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010 . . .  Coach Richt was on a call with a another prospective student-athlete (PSA) when he missed a call from a senior PSA’s mother (Mr. Sterling Bailey from East Hall High School in Georgia). The mother’s cell phone had a 678 area code. While he was checking the voicemail left by Ms. Bailey, Coach Richt missed another call from a 678 area code. After he listened to Ms. Bailey’s message, Coach Richt hit the send button for what he thought was Ms. Bailey. When a male’s voice answered the phone, Coach Richt was surprised and asked if it was Sterling, thinking he was calling Ms. Bailey and [her son] answered; however, the person answering the phone told him he had the wrong number. When Coach asked who it was, the individual said it was C.J. Curry (a junior PSA from North Hall High School in Georgia). Once Coach Richt realized who it was, he ended the call and self-reported the violation to the Compliance Office.

The NCAA determined that a violation, indeed, occurred because Richt’s call to Curry was placed prior to Sept. 1 of Curry’s senior year of high school, “which is contrary to the provisions of Bylaws 13.1.3.1 and 13.1.3.1.2.” The SEC and NCAA accepted Georgia’s proposed penalties: Richt was not allowed to call any recruits for a period of one week, and Georgia was banned from sending any general correspondence to Curry for 30 days and staff members will be banned from contacting him for the first 30 days after he otherwise could be contacted.

Both Bailey and Curry have verbally committed to Georgia, Bailey for the 2011 signing class and Curry for 2012.

Other secondary violations revealed in the documents released Tuesday include:

  • Assistant football coach Warren Belin sent a text message from his cell phone to a recruit when he intended to send an e-mail. (E-mails are permitted; texts are not.)
  • Assistant track and field coach Don Babbitt wrote on the Facebook wall of a recruit, seeking contact information. Babbitt said he thought he was using the e-mail feature rather than posting to the wall.
  • Head swimming coach Jack Bauerle and assistant swimming coach Jerry Champer made two separate phone calls to the same recruit on the same night after she called about her scholarship paperwork.
  • A volleyball staff member sent recruiting materials by priority mail, rather than regular mail.
  • A member of the equestrian team appeared in a congratulatory ad in a national equestrian magazine.

NCAA enforcement is like the cop that stops a business man in a hurry for speeding because that is easy enforcement. yet, the same cop can’t catch the thieves and drug dealers because it is hard work and requires effort. These violations are easy enforcement and makes the NCAA appear ro be enforcing the rules, yet let a dad shop out his sons services to the highest bidder and that is overlooked because enforcement is hard and costly and the NCAA is afraid it might upset one of the Conference heads or bowl committees.

The Barney Fife’s of the NCAA strike again. Great job guys. You really have your thumb on the pulse of the problems in NCAA football. Forget pay-for-play, pimping parents, and schools contracted to firms that represent legalized gambling, police those incorrectly dialed recruiting phone calls!

Maybe they should wait and restrict Richt during the first 5 games of the 2011 season. Oh, that only applies if you are Ohio State, sorry.

Absolutely stupid on Georgia’s part for kneecapping itself again.

1983 UGA Grad….all good points. The NCAA should make a movie and call it Police Academy XV. Start out with a cop writing a UGA student a ticket for illegal parking while the burglar alarm in the jewelry store next to him is screaming. Guys dressed in Auburn clothes come running out in masks, with bags of jewels, but the cop keeps writing the ticket.

The headline the next day reads: “Local Cops Cracking Down on Illegal Parking.” Everyone hails the NCAA for their fine work!

CMR called someone he shouldn’t have by accident – UGA self-reported it to the NCAA – UGA recommended the penalties and the NCAA and SEC accepted. This kind of thing happens at most schools.

How could the NCAA overlook this response and honestly believe Newton knew nothing about his dad shopping him around, electing to walk away from $180,000 at Mississippi State, and signing to play at Auburn instead? Because it paid more…..in Cam’s own words.

The NCAA is more concerned about mailings that go out by Priority Mail, rather than First Class? What a crock of kaka. There is little wonder the NCAA has little sympathy or respect.

Medical Hardships

January 19th, 2011
8:55 am

should be thoroughly reviewed by the NCAA. It is unfair to a veteran player when he is bumped from the team to make room for a prized prospect, seeks a transfer to another school and have the team doc for that school declare a play is fit to play at say, Georgia State, while the team doc at say, Alabama, declare he is not fit to play to open the scholarship for the prized prospect.

These instances should be carefully investigated, and where warranted, become NCAA violations. After all, the supposedly injured player and unfit to play for U of A again, is the one being severely harmed by the desires of the head coach.

Why sign 25 recruits when there are only 10 openings for the upcoming season, and then have to trim the roster to 85 by August of each year?

I suppose the motivation for over-signing prospects is to keep them from signing and playing for a competitor. In the meantime, the player effectively cut from the team by being offered a medical hardship, is egregiously harmed and has no remedy except to lose a year of eligibility by transferring to another Division 1 school.

A school should be limited to signing the number of prospects for which they have openings on the roster.

This should be tightly monitored by the NCAA, with appropriate penalties for cutting players who are declared fit to play by an independent medical staff.

Does any rule violation go uncontested by Georgia or are all of them “silly”. It is this attitude not only by the program but by the press towards the NCAA when it pertains to Georgia that positions Georgia for the trouble they get into. Maybe being isolated in the “party school” of the nation causes immaturity in the thinking not only of the players but of the coaching staff as well. I think the NCAA gives the benefit of the doubt to some schools on these things, but Georgia is in the principals office far too many times. I think that violation for excessive celebration against Florida years ago now, was the product of the trash talking personality this team was and still is. If you win like the Jets have at it, the world is against you and you are better than the world. Georgia does not have that benefit of running a winning program either on or off the field.

You clowns are hilarious… you think Mark Richt is the only person who self-reports these things? All coaches are more than willing to self-report these things because it advertises that they respect the rules and are gentlemen… I commend him for reporting them, but if you think other coaches around the league don’t also report these self-incriminating things just because you didn’t see it in this article, you are lost.

Chill out folks – Tim got what he needed today… a headline (though a non issue) that generated some blog hits.

The rules are a joke but the NCAA is not out there trying to dig up missed dialed phone calls. UGA self reported these violations!!! And they should, given that these crazy rules exist! There is no real punishment here that puts UGA at a disadvantage in recruiting these kids. If the rules have to exist I think it is in the coaches best interest to report these minor violations knowing there is no real consequence. Better than having the NCAA stumble on the info and find out it had not been reported. Penelty would be more severe.

The biggest disgrace here is that ..

1- These nit pic rules exist
2- Someone had to take the time to write the NCAA report and meet to discuss self impposed punishment. What a waste of time.
3- Tim takes the time to request open records and write a story with a somewhat misleading headline. Its a slow time in NCAA football right now but geesee… find some real material and dont bash the home team with negative misleading headlines. The AJC hurts the UGA program more than any other school in the confrence with their constant negative coverage.

Got an idea Tim, Bradley, Shultz…. Focus some press time and investigation on violations at other schools and print them in your paper….Might actually help out home team with image and recruits for a change. Try it!!

These type articles actually do hurt recruiting. UGA is locked in a real battle with Auburn for some of the elite recruits in this state. Everybody knows that Auburn should be in trouble for the Newton, McGregor, Lowder crap. So what does the AJC do to help the Auburn recruiters out? Put out a silly story about some secondary viloations that don’t amount to a hill of beans. But the Auburn recruiters get what they need to go running to these kids and parents and say, “See UGA has recruiting violations, too!” Mission accomplished. UGA and Richt get embarrassed, UGA doesn’t get recruits they need to turn the program around, Richt gets fired. Maybe when the vendetta against Richt has been settled the AJC writers will stop biting the hand that feeds them.

January 19th, 2011

“I have read in more than one publication about Newton’s reply that he chose Auburn because it paid more. How could the NCAA overlook this response and honestly believe Newton knew nothing about his dad shopping him around, electing to walk away from $180,000 at Mississippi State, and signing to play at Auburn instead? Because it paid more…..in Cam’s own words.”

No, you haven’t read that. What you read was a tale by a writer that claimed to have a single, anonymous source that heard that. When the investigators showed up the alleged source denied ever saying anything like that. You got duped by some low class writer trying to increase hits on his website.

These “secondary violations”, every school has them, every school reports them. 10 to 15 a year is about normal and most major newspapers report them for schools in their state..

Selective journalism ...

January 19th, 2011
10:16 am

Tim, why don’t you report on secondary violations by Auburn, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Florida, Tennessee, L.S.U., Florida State, Miami, Clemson and other schools? What about oversigning, especially at Alabama. How about playing stupid about father’s shopping their kids for a couple of hundred grand? Instead, you make Coach Richt looking like a big-time violater when I suspect he’s the most honest head cooach in the S.E.C. Others probably would not have reported their violations as he did? Equalize the playing field here, please.

We might as well start using the recruiting philosophy of some of our opponents;

1.) Free tattoos for each recruit and a phone number to call to have your picture taken so you can sell the photo. $$
2.) Have your father/aunt/uncle/mother shop you around for $180,000 to the highest bidder and get them in trouble. Then sign with UGA.
3.) Sell all of your stuff related to football to agents, fans etc. We will make you sit out against Coastal Carolina, Vandy and New Mexico State but you can play in all the other games.
4.) Get verbal commitments from 50 players and kick off the team those that are currently there who aren’t worth a crap.

That should get us right in the BCS title picture.

Thank you Tim.

It is important for these self-righteous Georgia fans to see just how dirty their program is.

You can add this to the long list of recruiting violations, personal fouls, unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, late hits, use of ineligible players (AJ Green’s amateur status was a joke), head coaches starting fights, goon plays, chop blocks, choke signs, player arrests, suspensions, and athletic director arrests and you clearly have a Lack Of Institutional Control.

It is time for the SEC and NCAA to step in and punish them severely – scholarship reductions, forfeiture of games, loss of recruiting access, loss of post season participation, and removal of TV exposure and revenue-sharing privileges.

It is time to save the integrity of the game.

NCAA has no merritt in my opinion. I truely believe, the colleges need to just dump the ncaa and form a new governing body that watches over the collegiate sports that means buisness! Whether the conducting the buisness means not allowing the star player to participate in a bowl game, or selling a jersey, or daddy shoping kid around to the highest bidder, or actually getting on a plane flying to a party with strippers,(you only are suspended 2 games for that! The NCAA Rules Committees are a joke. Everybody should be treated the same, but they are not. They do not much to do, so they have to show their power every now and then! ALL schools violate rules every year in every sport, they (NCAA) need to get on the same page.
Here is a good example of having nothing to do. Recently the NCAA Softball program released a “Legal Bat” chart to be used in the 2011 season, it must be in the dugouts of both teams; the document is 33 1/2 pages long! Why not just just ask the coaches if their players are properly equipped, then if a bat is in question, go to a document of “ILLEGAL BATS”! Put the burden on the coaches to prove that the bat is legal. I grant you, different teams will get treated differently than others when it comes to this rule.
Again, the NCAA is a joke; maybe there needs to be an independant clearing house for all sports and do away with the NCAA’s B___ S___!

This is probably one of the “worst” articles I have ever red. Mr. Tucker-please find something more interesting to discuss.

Maybe some of these recruits will major in Sports Journalism.
One reason CMR can’t get any love from the AJC is he won’t give them an interview or what they want to hear. Therefore all the negativity.
A couple of seasons ago M. Bradley couldn’t even get an interview with Coach Willie Martinez.
When’s the last time you heard any of UGA’s coaches commenting in the AJC? Don’t happen very often.
Can you blame them???

Newton didn’t get anything. If you think he did, all you have to do is find the money. Teams of experienced investigators didn’t find any, but you’re smarter than they are, right? So show me the money. If you can’t you are nothing but a jealous fan of a rival team that knows nothing.

…and Cam did not know anything about his dad shopping him around? Bobby Lowder probably did not know it, either? The NCAA is in it for the money, too. The BCS would have have been a flop it the NCAA had not reinstated. It was a smart move for Auburn to suspend Newton to clean their hands and force the NCAA to reinstate him for the big money maker.

The BCS is all about money to the NCAA. A smart move by Auburn.

“Tell us again what Cam Newton did not do?”

Ok, he did not lose to UGA,. He did not ,lose to bammer. He did not lose the SEC or national championship games. In fact, he did not lose any game at all that he played for Auburn.

What hwe did do He and his entirwe family passed investigations from both the SEC and NCAA offices with flying colors. No extra benefits at all.

“Mike P.…and Cam did not know anything about his dad shopping him around?”

You should do a better job of keeping current. It turns out his dad didn’t “shop him around.” Mississippi State ex player and general sleeze agent Kenny Rogers approached Cecil Newton about $200k for Cam to sign with MSU and Cecil listened, however briefly. That was in a Starkeville hotel lobby on November 27, 2009.
Of course, 20k of that money was going to Rogers for all his hard work. The problem was, Rogers, who was running from $11,000 in bad checks at the time couldn’t raise $20, let alone thousands.

There was no mention of money at Oklahoma, Auburn or Tennessee, three other places where Cam took recruiting visits so the “shopping around” didn’t happen.

No money changed hands and Auburn didn’t offer any. At no time in this entire saga has anyone involved, from Rogers to the president of the NCAA, ever even alleged that Auburn did anything wrong. There is not now and there has not been an investigation of Auburn. If there’s a problem, it’s Mississippi State’s problem.

You DulDawgs need to worry about Richt’s “Dream Team” sinking below the waves and get over the 49-31 beatdown.

You dumb dogs should be ashamed that even when you cheat the true SEC powers are getting all the good recruits. Just another example of how weak and foolish you are. A complete joke

The biggest bunch of S#%T I’ve heard of
since a dirt poor student lost his scholarhip at Tech when
he received a winter coat donated to keep his butt warm in winter and it was charged against him as a not reported donation that added to his income.
That was all he received.
Just a minimal delay maybe 1-2 days if at all, in recontacting THESE student athletes would be appropriate, all served concurrently. With UUGA’s self reportin

And the two dumbest: the wrong number, and a text message instead of another type of communication; well… they’re IDIOTS. I hope it erupts into a National Firestorm that shakes the NCAA’s booty.
The next time the NCAA committee gets a wrong number, they ought to be kicked out the door–into the cold cruel world of actuality–for a few days.
Amnd IF they return they should have their cell and office phones disconnected for a month.

It’s a good’un. Stranger than fiction. NObody but the NCAA committe could come up with this crock of _ _ i t. Dogs, put your law school alums to work on this one. TECH supports UGA. YES.
When the NCCA administrators/committe is finished,
they will not be worth asking a job at minimum wage to shovel cow manure out of the AG school barns.

Are you f””’ing kidding me? Why don’t the NCAA just hire private investigators to go undercover and really find the truth in colleges with athletes and alumni if they really want to clean this sh”t up. Otherwise this is a bunch of bullsh**t.

You think Hershel received any improper benefits in 1980-1982? Probably not.

And really who gives a sh*t if they did? I thought you went to college to earn a living when you get out. If you can earn it before you have a skill set others in college don’t have and that is not a reason to penalize in my opinion.

I agree that this artile is useless! Give us more details on UGA recruiting (accomplishments), and stop trying to discredit our program! It truly appears that CMR has received the message and has definitely turned up the intensity in the recruiting arena. I am very proud of his accomplishments this year, and most importantly, he accomplished all of this, while conducting himself at the highest level of integrity. Prediction: CMR and his Staff will finish with a top five “Dream Team” class, and will have addressed their most pressing needs (RB, DL, WR, and DB). Go Dawgs!!!!
