Texas hires Searels as offensive line coach

(UPDATE:) Texas has completed its deal with Stacy Searels and plans an announcement later Thursday afternoon of his hire as offensive line coach.

8:45 p.m. Wednesday:

Georgia offensive line coach Stacy Searels traveled Wednesday afternoon to Austin, Texas, where a website covering University of Texas athletics, Orangebloods.com, reported Wednesday night that he accepted an offer to become the Longhorns’ offensive line coach.

Texas has not yet announced a hire.

Texas head coach Mack Brown has been seeking an offensive line coach since the December retirement of Mac McWhorter. Auburn O-line coach Jeff Grimes last week turned down the position.

Searels and his wife, Patricia, left Athens-Ben Epps Airport on a private plane to Austin shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday.  They were picked up in Austin by Brown’s wife, Sally, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

Neither Searels nor Georgia officials have commented on the matter.

Searels, a native of Trion, Ga., has been the Bulldogs’ offensive line coach since 2007. He previously was offensive line coach at LSU, Cincinnati and Appalachian State.

Georgia’s offensive line was expected to be a pillar of the 2010 team but drew much criticism as the Bulldogs struggled to run the ball effectively. Georgia finished 10th in the SEC in rushing.

In another development Wednesday regarding Georgia’s O-line: Backup lineman Tanner Strickland won’t be back with the Bulldogs this year, having decided to skip his final season of eligibility.  He plans to complete his degree in speech communications and move on with life after football.

His Georgia career was slowed by shoulder problems. He was redshirted in 2007, played in 13 games in 2008, missed the 2009 season after shoulder surgery and played in 13 games in 2010, starting three.

Good! I’m glad. He is also our running game cordinator as well and our running game has not featured a great running game. Our last good running year was with Moreno. Moreno was a good back however our running backs have had no where to run almost all the time. Our line appears to be very capable but we do not feature and strong cutbacks nor any inside Zone blocking schemes to help expose a strong running game!

Our pass blocking was very very weak as well! The O-line is very slow getting out of their stances and not very quick with their skills as far as containing the inside rush. More fundamentals and also a wide spread.

Realistically, he probably sees this as his last year anyway considering that Richt probably won’t be there next year if we don’t do well. This is a strategic move for him.

Well, let’s see. We hired Kirby Smart, a career defensive player and coach, to coach running backs a few years ago, Tony Ball, a receiver and receiver coach at Va Tech, to coach running backs before Kirby. Then after Kirby, we hired Brian McClendon, a receiver at Ga to coach running backs, so I imagine if Searles leaves to go to Texas, and I wouldn’t blame him, we’ll hire maybe Billy Bennett or perhaps David Greene to coach the line. Maybe TJ Gartrell, or perhaps even Jonas Hayes. Maybe Bobby Cox would like the job. Any of these would not surprise me. Coach Richt is apparently not an expert on football, anyway, based on his post season comments, so any of the above hires would not surprise me.

Wish he would have left 2 years ago. This is another of the many terrible hires by Richt. Richt want be able to hire a good O.L. coach to replace SS. Richt has proven over and over again that he is the worst head coach in the SEC when it comes to hiring and firing assistant coaches. This clown has promoted coaches from within the program that should have never been offered jobs, and he has let below average assts. stay on staff when it was obvious to everyone else that these guys couldn’t do there jobs. Garner, SS, Bobo, Ball, and McClendon should have been shown the door 2 years ago. It’s not that Richt is so loyal, the fact is he is lazy, and he doesn’t want to go through the process of evaluating and interviewing quality coaches. It’s so much easier to not make a decision at all, or to simply promote someone already on the staff. How has Bobo, and the loser Martinez worked out. Wish someone would have come after RIcht, so the new A.D. wouldn’t have to make decision next year. He has proven that he can’t make a decision either. Why is it that UGA is the only program in the SEC that has coaches and an A.D. that are afraid to make decisions? The hits just keep on coming for this pathetic athetic program

He is leaving UGA because he had enough. He is going to take a lateral move, or perhaps a demotion as coordinating the run game may not be in the picture at UT. Over the past two years when pressed for explanations on the state of the program from friends & family members, he was very careful with his words..but it was clear he did not respect the passive environment Richt had created. He also wanted to take the role of total development of his players to even working them out himself. Van Halanger shot that down. (VH also killed player requests to get private trainers)

It amazes me the comments on here. If you can see if on TV or from the stands, the coaches will see it on tape. Evaluating staff and upgrading where necessary is not always easy, but I bet Richt has more experience doing it than the posters on this blog.

I am more concerned about the timing and its impact on the ability to find a quality replacement, and a little concerned about recruiting. The Dawgs need some quality linemen and signing day is just a couple of weeks away. I hope this doesn’t cause any recruits to change their minds.

After Miss ST game his home was for sale, he put it on the market b/c he knew he was part of the problem. I’m very excited about this, I was wishing richt would pull the trigger, but honestly I can’t blame him for not doing it. After letting go the entire defensive staff last year, it would look bad to future employees to have more firings the next year. Searels was a very big name when UGA got him, he was supposed to be the best oline coach out there. He seems to do a very good job with freshman and sophomores, but for some reason he doesn’t seem that good at continuing the progression into juniors and seniors.

As for the person saying van halanger wouldn’t let searels work out the oline and that the players weren’t allowed to get personal trainers, for those of you who have never been around college football that doesn’t happen anywhere. I don’t know everything about van halanger, but strength and conditioning is a science, these coaches have degrees and certificates in strength and conditioning. There is a big picture of what the coaches want the team to improve on and which way to go. When a kid is recruited to a school they give the kid a workout to do over the spring and summer, they don’t want the kid just lifting whatever they feel is best.

When UGA wins 9 games or more the next 3 years and Richt is still coach, all of the fair-weather UGA fans and supporters will regret the harm and negativity they brought to the program. The rest of you Tech and Bama fans pretending to be Dawgs can take a flying leap…When UGA wins the east this year, I hope support and apologies are given. UGA would have won the east last year if not for mistakes at the worst times by players, inexperience and early suspensions, not coaches… 4 turnovers by QB against Florida, fumble on go ahead TD against S.Carolina, Easily could have lost just 1 or 2. Like falcons were more like a 11-5 or 10-6 team that had some things go there way and were not really a 13-3 team except for big breaks or. things went the other way for the dogs and there are years like that especially with inexperience at QB. Crow goes down slow and nasty….Richt is not going anywhere soon so better get behind him during the tough times becasue all coaches go through them. Who is the last UGA coach to win the SEC before Richt who did more than once and in the hunt more than half his years for the NC? Dooley in what 1982 with Herschel? If not for Herschel to go with the defenses it would have been 1968 since a SEC title And all these idiots want to run the best coach the school probably had ever has had out of town? Please go root for another school…you are too stupid to represent UGA and our state. Good Riddance. Our O-line has been more our downfall than anything since he took over. The guy is over rated and we can do better. How many missed assignments cost us games LY. The fumble at the end of the CU game was because of a whiffed block where the D lineman was on King as he took the hand off. We win against Ark. if we block on the last possession. We were 15 yards from fg range and took 2 sacks on blown blocking assignments. I can go on with these all day. I wanted him gone and now I get my wish!

I am a Dawg fan. CSS is a good coach, IMO. But the program is in disarray. We have lots of problems. If we do not address them, worst is yet to come. I am talking Vandy, Ole Miss bad. We will be looking up at everybody in the conference if serious steps are not taken! CSS has been in good programs and sees the writing on the wall. CMR has painted his self in a corner with the kind of recruits he has signed. CRG only recruits a certain kind of player and character makes no difference to him.

CMR needs to make a stand and take over the program he heads or he is going to lose his job. He is a good person and I believe he is a good football coach. But he is employing people who don’t really care whether he is the coach or not. They are seeking a ” cultural change” in Athens. He needs to take back the program.

I guess CSS has had enough.

The facts are that they made mistakes on the field because of bad coaching. They were inexperienced on the field because of poor succession planning. They were suspended because of insufficient oversight and mentoring.
Quit with the excuses and admit that our once great leader has lost his abilitity to coach and run a program that isn’t an embarrassment.

In truth, I’m hopeful Searles does well wherever he goes, and I hope CMR is able to find a great replacement. The end of season comments by CMR were embarrassing to me, inasmuch as I would hope that a highly paid, or lowly paid, college football coach would already be an ‘expert on college football’. I truly hope that he is able to turn the program around, but I’m afraid the ‘dream team’ he is trying to recruit is too little too late. By the time these guys start to contribute, and they will contribute mightily if we can sign ‘em all, it’ll be 2012 or later, and CMR may well be gone.

As far as you guys gals that are negative on CMR need to understand that UGA’s chances are better with him in charge. He did not have the support needed with Mr. Evans at the helm. We will be taking a risky chance if we let him go because we could end up with either a prospect that has never been a head coach or having to take our third option. Either direction could be very costly. Recruits like tenure and security. We need to start acting like true Dawgs and support this program more. i think Searels saw the writing on the wall. For whatever reason, either he didn’t have good recruiting judgment or skills, or he couldn’t coach them up, but I think he knew he would be fired after 1 more year unless the running game REALLY turned around. The running game has been just ok for far too many years since Searels has been here. With the top ranked RB’s and OL’s Richt and Garner have recruited for Searels to work with, it’s amazing how bad they have been in the run.

I just spit coffee everywhere! Thanks i needed that.

Good… Maybe we will get someone that will put them in the weight room and get um strong. I thinking maybe a Drill Sargent. Our line was too soft this year and needs to be a focus of the entire staff. It starts up front in the trenches on both sides of the ball. We need to replace Ball also with someone that understands running the ball.

I don’t think Searels was the problem. Remember how well he did with our line a few years ago when we had a bunch of new starting offensive linemen. We all praised him for doing such a good job. I thought he was very aggressive as a line coach. The problem seems to be that he wants to play power football but Bobo wants to play finesse football. I also think the strength coach was a problem too. How can you criticize him when he did so well every where else? Richt will be fired next year. I think our AD is giving him one year to get things fixed. And then Richt will be out. You don’t think our AD is not looking around and making a list — I bet he already has a short list of candidates.

The UGA program started down hill when Vangorder left and Martinez was stuck in there. You win with D. Grantham’s scheme did improve in some areas but it will be 3 seasons before he has his own players in there and the learning curve over with. Getting a good O line coach might be tough when the guy interviewing you might be gone after next season.

Searels is merely a symptom of a much larger problem at UGA. An O line that was consistently dominated, a porous defense up front and DB’s that routinely gave up the big play, a pathetic running game, and an anemic offense in general that was hampered by poor and inconsistent play calling. Bottom line…poor coaching all the way around cause we have the athletes. Not firing Richt immediately after the season ended was a huge mistake that has hampered recruiting and will hamper hiring a OL coach because of the uncertainties surrounding the future.

Searels may not be such a hot offensive line coach, but he ain’t stupid. He knows to get out while the “getting” is good; cause’ he knows Richt ain’t going to be around after next season and therefore he won’t have a job. Smart move on his part.

Seems the former O-coord. of Panthers – Jeff Davidson – needs a job. I know the Panthers stunk this year but Davidson developed a line with a zone-blocking scheme that allowed Carolina to have 2 1000 yd rushers just a few seasons ago. “Sometimes there is just not enough rocks”. 8.5 mill is a lot of money to get a guy gone and UGA doesn’t have that much money. The AD should have at least asked Mark to take a 10-15 year payout in order to help the program. Good luck Dogs. I understand how you feel because we had Mike Shula. Both Mark and Mike tried to recruit from their office instead of pounding the pavement and that might have worked if all the other coaches would agree to that scheme. The Nick Saban rule was passed because the lazy coaches like Mark,Fulmer,Tubberville all hate the travel required to recruit. Richt is not tuff enough to compete in the sleazy world of recruiting and Garner has too much Auburn in him to succeed. Apparently Searels know’s that if CMR stay’s then Bobo will too and he apparently isn’t very impressed with 2010 and 2011 recruits on the offensive line. Also, he probably is a little frustrated with CMR, raiding the defense and putting them on the offense and taking the offense guy’s and moving them to the the defense. If must be hard to play high school for 4 years on the defensive line and then get moved to the offensive line because the offensive line has no depth or vice versa. I have never liked all the moving around that CMR does and I’M sure the position coaches and recruit’s are not too happy with it either.

Searls just got removed from the list of coaches that are on the “fired” list! CMR’s name is probably on that list also after the 2011 season. UGA “ain’t gonna” win 10 games, not even with the dream team; if he ever gets them! He is already talking redshirts and grayshirts; it will take at least 2 years to get these kis game ready; so UGA NATION, don’t get to excited about a dream team making immediate impacts on the progam, granted a few will, but most want! What if we see an improvement? For the most part, the UGA NATION is calling for a quick fix, ain’t gonna happen. A “quick” fix in Athens is going to take a couple of years. There are 2 options the “NATION” can take, get on the bus and support the changes, or fuss about CMR and calling for his head! Call for Bobo’s head and many of your problems are solved, not CMR’s head!

Every fan is fair weathered. When their team is up they are positive, when the team is down they are negative. Their is a difference in losing a hard fought game and losing the way UGA has over the past 3-4 years. Do you think BAma fans are ready to fire Saban after blowing that lead against Auburn?!?!? No. However, fast forward 5-6 years down the road of not winning the West or even competing for the West and continuing to lose the big games and they will be ready to run his A$$ out of town too.

There’s too many coaches out there to be content with being an average team. They are in a “what have you done for me lately” profession and Richt hasn’t done squat lately except lose the big games and lose games he shouldn’t. Hell even if they win they do it in the ugliest possible fashion. Ugly wins are accepted when you are a champion.

I base my statement that Bobo is the worst and unqualified offensive coordinator on the fact that we lost 7 games this last year and the offensive was the main problem. Because we had great world class receivers we were able to score a lot of points that took about 2 minutes off the clock with each score. When that happens you turn into another BIG-12 team where you have to out score your opponent. That’s not SEC football . In the SEC you have to establish the running game and run 5 to 7 minutes off the clock while scoring . By the fourth quarter the other teams defense is so tired they can’t keep up with the scoring and we win.
The defense got a lot more of the blame this year than they deserved because Bobo couldn’t control the TIME OF POSSESSION which in my opinion is the most important statistic for the offensive coordinator.

If CMR will direct him a little bit more, I think people will stop complaining there. However, getting a new o-line coach is key, because we’ve had an overhyped o-line two years in a row now, that really didn’t open up that much. With AJ gone now, we need to have a dynamic offense and having an o-line that can cut holes is really crucial. Just hope we get someone worthy of UGA.

In my opinion a great defensive and offensive coordinator should make at least half of what the head coach makes and be signed to at least a three year contract . That would keep a lot of coordinators from leaving and also make them more accountable .
Ask yourself is Bobo worth 1.5 Million? Make Bobo the head recruiter and the quarterback coach and pay him 300K ,he’s deserves that but not offensive coordinator.

In all honesty, does anyone think this might have an impact on where Isaiah Crowell will decide to commit? This is especially important considering the fact that should Searels accept the Shorthorn job, there is insufficient time to find a new OL coach before National Signing Day. I don’t think a running back recruit would like to sign with an institution, no matter how glorious and wonderful my Georgia is, that has a vacant OL coaching position, as well as an O-line that hasn’t really aided the running game.

Definitely don’t need a swap of offensive coaches…that would be like swapping your current girlfriend for your ex-girlfriend. Nothing new…opponents would know what formations you like to run and what can score a TD!!

Read a few of the comments. Two touch on some items…’who cares’ and ‘coach hewitt’. Many would agree that CMR is too loyal to staff and that to his detriment. Bobo should have been released with McClendon at the end of 2008. I was high on Searels based on LSU tenure. There could be some issue about Van Halinger and the O line condition. This is where Coach T was. Van Halinger was there when Searels came on board. So what changed from the Sugar Bowl win to the disaster at the Liberty Bowl. Let’s go back to the OSU game in Stillwater. Was there anything in that game that was similar to the game in Memphis. How do you move the ball on your opening possession with authority and a score and then you disappear the other 3 quarters. Then explain the constant shift in players along the line the past two years. Then explain how the “running cordinator” for 2 seasons virtually had no running game. And how your QB in 2010 was being mauled all the time. You see I do not buy that crap that a Nick Farley is a all pro NFL guy from junior to senior year. You take Auburn out in 09 but in 10 you do nothing.
There are a lot of factors here, but two issues come out in the end. Virtually no running game and absolutley no consistency. In consistent play is not S&C, that is coaching.
I like Searels, but I do not think he wanted to be in Athens, just close to mom. But if you are CMR you had to see this coming. If I’m CMR I make the O change now. Why change one coach. I’m a strong believer that the O-line is where it is at in college football. Most people think that the D wins championships…not me…it is the O line. And now is the time for Richt to make a solid hire. Money talks, they listen, they will come…even with a few hours left in recruiting. Good position coaches can make most personnel tops…look at Mullen at MSU.

BREAKING NEWS: Mark Richt has promoted the water girl to coach the offensive line. “I believe she gives our fine young men the best opportunity to compete at a high level. And people loved her on the ‘Ask The Water Girl’ portion of the TV show.”

Does Wally Butts have a grandson that coaches? Maybe Ray Goof could return….oh yeah, what about Bill Lewis, he did wonders at Tech…..then there is still old man Dooley who is already in Athens. He also has Barbara for OC and DC. Just a thought.

Good for Searles, I’m sure he was really feeling bad being part of the disgraceful program that is georgia. Between all the arrests, dui’s, panties, a lame duck head coach, and a program going nowhere he had to feel he was wasting his life in athens. It really is the cesspool of the SEC there, no one wants to be there which is why no recruits will commit. athens, ga.- the toilet of the south

Zach Debell comments on being disappointed due to CSS taking the Texas job is understandable. CSS has stated he did what he felt was best for him and his family. When you lose your position coach and someone you feel comfortable with it is logical to feel like Zach does and I am sure the other OL feel similar. But when you commit it should be more than a position coach or for that matter a HC that you are committing. It is the opportunity to get a great education on a wonderful setting and a team program concept. CMR will make a good hire and I feel certain things will work out for everyone for the best. I watched the film on DeBell and think this guy is way under rated and will be a star on the roster. Extremely athletic guy who feel in love with UGA and the Dawgs and we feel the same about him. Go Dawgs!
