Texas hires Searels as offensive line coach

(UPDATE:) Texas has completed its deal with Stacy Searels and plans an announcement later Thursday afternoon of his hire as offensive line coach.

8:45 p.m. Wednesday:

Georgia offensive line coach Stacy Searels traveled Wednesday afternoon to Austin, Texas, where a website covering University of Texas athletics, Orangebloods.com, reported Wednesday night that he accepted an offer to become the Longhorns’ offensive line coach.

Texas has not yet announced a hire.

Texas head coach Mack Brown has been seeking an offensive line coach since the December retirement of Mac McWhorter. Auburn O-line coach Jeff Grimes last week turned down the position.

Searels and his wife, Patricia, left Athens-Ben Epps Airport on a private plane to Austin shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday.  They were picked up in Austin by Brown’s wife, Sally, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

Neither Searels nor Georgia officials have commented on the matter.

Searels, a native of Trion, Ga., has been the Bulldogs’ offensive line coach since 2007. He previously was offensive line coach at LSU, Cincinnati and Appalachian State.

Georgia’s offensive line was expected to be a pillar of the 2010 team but drew much criticism as the Bulldogs struggled to run the ball effectively. Georgia finished 10th in the SEC in rushing.

In another development Wednesday regarding Georgia’s O-line: Backup lineman Tanner Strickland won’t be back with the Bulldogs this year, having decided to skip his final season of eligibility.  He plans to complete his degree in speech communications and move on with life after football.

His Georgia career was slowed by shoulder problems. He was redshirted in 2007, played in 13 games in 2008, missed the 2009 season after shoulder surgery and played in 13 games in 2010, starting three.

Don’t tell us old dawg fans what to say, we have been around 50 plus years, graduated from UGA, spend our money on UGA events, support the Alumni. Association, school of business, law school and put our money where our mouth is.
We are embarrassed by our program and this staff.

The only question I have about this is….why does Mack Brown want him? The last two years we have had talented linemen but an underachieving line. Thats coaching.

I think CSS knew HIS performance was not very good and knew that he was no longer looked at favorably by CMR, Mr. McGarity, the alums/boosters & fanbase and is getting out before he is asked to get out. This is something that I wished for so I am extremely happy if he does get the job at Texas.

Also, Mr. McGarity (not Damon Evans) will be involved in evaluating the replacement along with CMR and that bodes well. I trust those two to make the right choice.

You people saying this a good thing….

In response–I don’t see the positive virtues of the only coach on staff who is desired by other programs leaving…perhaps you do? Educate us?

Why do you bother to blow sunshine? What is the relationship between a critique of an evolving situation and being a fan of a school? Foolish Irrationality. Did you actually graduate from College? UGA? Still and adolescent in high school?

Read the events…draw a conclusion. Straw man arguments don’t make a point.

Don’t hold your breath about Grantham being there next year either. He’s well thought of in the NFL, and he might be holding his announcement until after signing day.

How do you know that CMR isnt behind this. It would be just like him to find Searels a job before he had to fire him. He knows there is a problem in the OL and might be trying to improve it. He may already have someone in mind that he wants to bring in. Nobody knows what is actually going on just what is written in these blogs. CMR is no fool regaurdless of what a few people might think.

Yes, I’m a Tech fan. I know, you hate me, I shouldn’t be here…etc. Serious question though……Remember back to the end of our game when UGA failed to take a knee to run the clock out. They scored a touchdown and inadvertantly gave Tech new like. If Tech had somehow managed to tie and then win that game in over-time, do you think Richt would have survived?

Coach Hewitt,
Who is Sunshine and what are you accusing us of?
He did a poor job of coaching our o-line and that’s the bottom line. I don’t care if he’s “desired by other programs” or not. He didn’t do the job and now I hope we give the job to someone else. Wrap your pointy head around that.

Tech Fan,
Tech has a damn good team and should have won that game. It was a close game but UGA should have beaten FL, SC, Colorado and CF easily and had AU on the ropes but just could not close the door. All of these close game UGA lost.UGA did not get beaten by these teams they just gave the game away, stupid fumbles, Int. or whatever. How is fumbling the ball in the endzone to lose the game the head coaches fault? GA played AU a better game than alabama. Should they fire Saban, UGA just couldnt get a break to save our lives until we played Tech. If not for the God of luck we would have lost that game.

Some of you clowns continue to show your ignorance..I guarantee Bobo would be out of work less than a month before he landed elsewhere..Spurrier has tried to hire him before as have other folks..You guys sound like the Panthers fans who wanted John Fox’s head..He was out of work 3-4 days…Most of you folks laughed out loud when Muschamp was hired as Auburn’s DC..You’re still doing it with Kirby..I don’t know why you refuse to acknowledge that a former Ga. player can coach..Seems other big time programs have recognized that years ago.

Yup. McGarrity likes Richt. Richt convinced him that UGA troubles are due to lack of time for him to study football and convinced him we’d land a train load of top recruits….both of which are total BS.

This can’t be spun in Georgia’s favor. Even if we all thought Searles under performed as a coach, along with his OL’s, the fact is he is leaving of his own accord. This moves tells a clear story… Stacy Searles thinks the S.S. Richt is sinking and he wants to jump in the life boat now, rather than next year.

I want Georgia to be successful. Mark Richt is our head coach and I want him to be successful. I think it’s important for Georgia fans to rally behind Richt and show him that we support his abilities to turn this program around.

In my opinion, McGarity would have fired Richt already had he been on the job for more than a year. No way does he want to be known for firing the head coach after such a short time to evaluate.
It’s all crumbling down. I wouldn’t be surprised if we do see more coaches leave soon. They better get while the gettin’s good.
Next year will likely be a wash, barring some miracle.
