Georgia-Tennessee preview: Can Dogs repeat last year’s big win in Athens?

Previewing Georgia vs. Tennessee basketball:

The basics

  • When: 7 p.m. Tuesday
  • Where: Stegeman Coliseum, Athens
  • TV: ESPNU

Records

  • Georgia: 13-3 (2-1 SEC)
  • Tennessee: 11-6 (1-2 SEC)

Three storylines

  • 1. Home sweet home. The Bulldogs, who finally made it back to Athens on Saturday night after last week’s snow and ice kept them on the road for five days, open a three-game homestand. Following Tuesday’s game against Tennessee, Georgia plays Mississippi State on Saturday and Florida on Jan. 25.
  • 2. An encore vs. the Vols? On Tennessee’s last visit to Stegeman Coliseum, the Bulldogs made a statement with perhaps their biggest victory under coach Mark Fox. They soundly defeated the Vols — ranked No. 8 in the nation at the time — 78-63 on Jan. 23, 2010, before a sellout crowd to end a 10-game Georgia losing streak vs. Tennessee. The Vols won last season’s  rematch in Knoxville on Feb. 17.
  • 3. No Pearl on the trip. The Vols will be without head coach Bruce Pearl, who didn’t accompany the team on its trip to Athens Monday night. Serving an eight-game SEC suspension for violating NCAA recruiting rules and misleading investigators, Pearl is allowed to travel with the team but is not permitted to be on the bench during games or participate in other game-day activities. He chose not to travel to Athens because the Vols did not have a walk-through practice there Monday due to a Georgia gymnastics meet. Associate head coach Tony Jones is filling in for Pearl.

News and notes

  • Unranked again: A week after cracking the Associated Press Top 25 poll for the first time in almost eight years, Georgia fell out of the rankings Monday as a result of last Wednesday’s loss at Vanderbilt. The Dogs are second among “others receiving votes” this week.
  • One win from last season’s total: Georgia’s next victory will be its 14th of the season, matching last year’s win total; the Bulldogs finished 14-17 last season.
  • Turnaround at the line: Gerald Robinson made only 52 percent of his free throws in Georgia’s pre-SEC games but has made 94 percent (17 of 18) in three SEC games. As a team, Georgia made 26 of 27 free throws Saturday at Ole Miss.

Last outings

  • Tennessee: The Vols overcame a 17-point deficit to beat Vanderbilt 67-64 in Knoxville on Saturday, with Scotty Hopson scoring 14 of his team-high 16 points in the second half. The win broke a two-game losing streak by Tennessee, which opened SEC play with a thee-point loss at Arkansas and an overtime loss to Florida.
  • Georgia: The Bulldogs shot 67 percent in the first half and went on to rout Ole Miss 98-76 on the road Saturday. The game represented Georgia’s highest-scoring output in SEC play since 1995.

The numbers game

  • 550: Approximate miles traveled by bus by Georgia’s team last week (from Athens to Nashville to Oxford, Miss.)
  • 38: Georgia RPI rank
  • 24: Tennessee’s RPI rank

History book

  • Series record: Tennessee leads 90-52 overall, but Georgia leads 34-32 in Athens.

UGA probably takes this one. Although Tennessee is probably the most bipolar team in the country so almost anything could happen. Without Pearl though, my money would be on UGA.

The Dawgs are vulnerable, but they play hard and have looked better in SEC play. Against Kentucky, I finally saw UGA start moving the ball around and executing the way they did last year. The difference is that there are more people actually able to score some baskets this year.

You'll need a lot of cops!

Wow!!! UT stole 2 points and won game…and I’m not talking about the last basket…that one was good…but the earlier one wasn’t…hate to see UGA lose, but it’s hard to win when refs give points to the other team…of course, maybe Ware can jump for the rebound next time, instead of letting someone go over his back….oh wait….I thought that was a foul….ref fail…

UGA got hosed by the refs as usual—they can’t even get a call at home which is a joke.

Seriously? what happened to home court advantage? That was the biggest piece of bull I’ve ever seen. Georgia just got ripped. How do you not review a shot clock call like that with the game on the line? That clearly changed the game, and is unacceptable.

Georgia got SCREWED tonight. Terrible calls in the last 90 seconds. Missed shot-clock violation, and a complete joke N0-CALL on an over-the-back. BS.

Some say over the back. I say two guys fighting for a rebound with a Dawg trying to knock Williams off the ball. The only thing the refs were checking at the end was the shot clock and had it expired and the shot nullified, Williams may have gone to the line. Worst case would have been OT. Give the refs credit. They let them play…Good game. Nobody gets all the calls. We didn’t, you didn’t. We win, you lo…

What happened to that blowout Dawgrun? You forget Tennessee has already beaten the best this season- before beating themselves lately. Looks like the VOLS are back on track and ready to compete for the SEC Championship. Will be interesting to see what happens over the next few weeks.

WOW! The Dawgs are just 52 and 91 all-time versus a football school (Tennessee) and they have a losing record against them in football too! Maybe if Tennessee had a gymnastics team you could claim a winning record against them in something?

Tough loss. I do think that Williams was over the back, but Barnes could have done a better job of putting his rear end on him and pushing him off the block.

I really like CMF. He seems to be the real deal. What do you guys think…if he can build this program into a consistent SEC contender does he leave like Tubby? GO DAWGS!!!

LOL

January 18th, 2011
11:36 pm

By the way Racine Dawg, UGA had every opportunity to win the game. The Pups were in the bonus with at least eight minutes to go in both halves and Tennessee wasn’t at all. The calls were even, and you lost to a football school for the 91st time. No ref is going to make that call at the end of the game (unless the Tennessee football team was there).

Bout time...

January 18th, 2011
11:41 pm

UGA was in the bonus the whole game in both halves. Tennessee wasn’t getting many calls and they would have gotten hosed had the refs decided another game against them. The refs let them play but the fouls were in UGA’s favor. Total fouls UT 18, UGA 13. The refs for the most part let them play. But UGA had more foul shots.

That was a long drive home from a game that can only be described as gutwrenching. Officials never make calls in the last second unless it is flagrant; lesson learned by our guys. We had our chances, but came up short. Saturday and next Tuesday are now must wins to stay relevant in the SEC talk. I do think Fox is the guy who can coach them up for it.
Go Dawgs!

Turn out the Lights, the party is over my friends. UGA basketball is guaranteed to have a losing season by the end of the year. The dive is taking place as I type this blog. UGA will not go to the Big Dance, while the Jackets have begun their journey to the throne. Jackets will be a final 16 team this year.

Dawg : The offensive board that Goins snatched near midcourt to give Tennessee the final possession told 1/2 the story of ball-hungry..! The Williams snatch at the end of regulation told the other 1/2.

Georgia got some strange calls from the officials tonight. Not saying it cost them the game but in a close game like this you never know. I’m not saying they were bad but just a little strange, that’s all. Better luck next time. Foul trouble cost Leslie some playing time and the way Georgia could use its rotation.

Mark Richt era in which over the 10-Year Mark Richt era, Mark Richt himself claims to have The Georgia Bulldogs Football Team # 4 in the entire nation in Winning Percentage :

.723 Winning Percentage 83 SEC Games : Florida 2001-2010
.702 Winning Percentage 84 SEC Games : LSU 2001-2010
.683 Winning Percentage 82 SEC Games : Auburn 2001-2010
.663 Winning Percentage 83 SEC Games : Mark Richt 2001-2010

Maybe Mark Richt meant to be claiming that we are # 4 in our own conference in his entire 10 years here ?
