The deadline for underclassmen to enter the NFL draft is Saturday, which means the clock is ticking for Georgia outside linebacker Justin Houston’s decision.
Of the Georgia juniors who said they would seriously consider the draft, Houston is the only one who hasn’t publicly declared his intentions.
Wide receiver A.J. Green announced he is forgoing his final season at UGA to enter the draft, in which he is widely expected to be a top-five pick. But cornerback Brandon Boykin and offensive linemen Cordy Glenn and Trinton Sturdivant decided to bypass the draft and return for their senior seasons.
Houston, who led the SEC in sacks this past season, is ranked as the draft’s No. 25 prospect by Scout.com.
It would be a surprise if Houston passes up the draft, although Georgia coach Mark Richt has made the point that Houston — like the other Georgia juniors aside from Green — could improve his draft stock (and thus his eventual NFL payday) by returning for his senior season.
Ten SEC underclassmen had declared for the draft through Thursday night, according to a list posted on the conference’s official website: Marcell Dareus, DL, Alabama; Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama; Julio Jones, WR, Alabama; Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas; Cam Newton, QB, Auburn; Will Hill, DB, Florida; A.J. Green, WR, Georgia; Randall Cobb, WR, Kentucky; Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU; and Tori Gurley, WR, South Carolina. UPDATE: Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley added his name to the list today.

Does anyone remember when Georgia had less talent but were superior in conditioning and heart? They would hang around until the 4th quarter then win! Strength and conditioning is the biggest problem I saw this year. They kicked Auburns butt for 1 and a half quarters then just ran out of gas. It happened over and over this year!

I personally think that Houston is the most overrated player in the SEC. HAve you ever watched him persue from the back side? Ever a tackle made because of speed and agressiveness. Never! Only tackles made basically fall in his lap..As for sacks, could double is numbers if had any sence of urgency. He pesues back side as if every play is a reverse.

One of the things that NCAA needs to address (should they ever get around to actually enforcing their rules) is oversigning. Just read on Stewart Mandel’s QnA that the teams that signed the most players over the last four years was…Alabama and Auburn. Huh. How about that. Georgia refuses to do that, which I applaud, but the playing field is not level. Not that the NCAA gives a rip. No money is on the line here, so maybe they’ll actually care about kids that get deceived by “adults”.

Agreed Leedawg. That really started to decline in a big way after 07. 07 was the end of the 04 class and I think those boys had the mentally to go into the weight room without someone pushing them to take it to another level. It seems from the reports we have received the boys since then have not kept up and it shows. I have met Van Hal a couple of times and he is a nice man but maybe these boys need a kick in the romp to get it going. Hopefully, that will take place now.

I with people on must keep the in-state talent in GA. Kudos to Bama, they have come in and taken some real good talent. Winning solves it all! Trying to figure out what next season team will do is like throwing a dart blind folded. No one knows! It’s the 1st time in CMR’s tenure that I have absolutely no confidence in a UGA team going into the following season. I don’t care how many 4-5 star recruits we get next month. Only 2 at the most will be able to make an impact. If UGA does not win 10 games or more, yes that includes beating UF, Boise and SC, CMR is history!
I hope he does it because it’s a mess trying to change HC’s, but nothing is there that gives me confidence in UGA being in the SEC CG….. Please prove me wrong!

I think we would have the best defense in the conference that LB core would also be tremendous with Samuel and jones and the secondary with boykin coming back sanders cummings on the other side had and outstanding first year Olgetree will be much better although I worry a little bit about Rambo but I think there will be some competition for that spot next year from some of these outstanding freshmen coming in so he will feel more pressure to perform, also he will have had more time in the system to better understand his duties. Just have to say yes because in a close game it’s nice to know that a good punter can stick inside the 10 yard line. Also, 2 seconds left in a game if we need a 51 yarder you want someone to be able to stick in there.

UGA fans need to temper their expectations for 2011. The defense is so thin because of poor recruiting and we are about to lose Houston. We don’t have much experience and we are counting on a couple of guys who are often injured at LB. Richard Samuel could not even practice the last few weeks because of constant swelling in his knee. I could see as many as 4 or 5 true freshman starting on defense this year if we have a couple of injuries. Please UGA fans… some of you are starting to get delusional about next fall already. Calm down, 2011 is a rebuilding year.

Nothing is new between U of F and UGA
January 14th, 2011
11:41 am
I know, I sound old …………because maybe I am but ……………but ……….. back in the late 60s and well into the early to mid 80s under Dooley, UGA usually held their own vs the Florida teams full of Heisman players like Steve Spurrier and Harmon Wages and Larry Smith and too many others to name like Tony Green, Wes Chandler and Willie Wilder and Earl Carr and the JAX boys, all named Gaffney. UGA defeated them in 88? when they were ranked # 1 and they did not score ……….10-0 it was.
Why did UGA usually prevail? UGA was usually under manned and under schemed because we simply ran the ball and played D. Basically, with that “cerebral” scheme, UGA usually won or it was close. UGA had the mental edge aways and the slower UGA teams played with heart. Thes two ingredients are missing and have been because of the last three coaches.
Today and for the last 20+ years UGA is still under manned BUT NOW the mental edge belongs to Florida. This year and about 5 others in the last 10 years are prime examples.
Until UGA brings a tough minded, hard nosed man in, it will not change. Richt has had 10 years and beyond maybe 4 or 5 good to really good years, he has done nothing, especially with Florida.
As a UGA man ( grad 71 & 73 ) with a memory of HOW and WHY it can happen, I refuse to attend any more home games.
Hire the right guy with UGA’s state of Georgia bred talent and bolster it over two very solid recruiting years and the tide will turn. Murray could enjoy two great years vs Florida IF the right man appears. He as three more years ………. he and his Batman golves.
Folks ………….. it is ONLY football. See TCU and AU and Boise and MSU and we can collectively realize that it would be so easy to right this ship. Richt’s contract is simply too expensive to UGA to dump him and his staff. Period. We are STUCK. This is the lone reason as to why UGA still has Richt moving around paer clips on his desk. His phone never rings now ……………. he takes walks at lunch …………….alone now. He knows that it is over and on to Honduras for his Missionary work. He feels good at this moment ONLY because his pals all have jobs ………….. until late next fall.
Go Dogs.

Being projected as the 25th pick is very good. Get insurance, come back and try to be a 10 pick. Obviously more money but longer benefit of the doubt too. Remember Kedric Gholston from Ohio State? Number 6 pick with the Jets. Has made no impact whatsover but Jets have given him too much money to give up just yet. Same for our Jamal Anderson. If not a top 10 pick, Falcons would have cut him 2 years ago.
Part of my Dawgs problem has been coaching. Bigger problem is overrated talent/recruiting on D line and O line and running back. Richt’s demeanor did not seem to be a problem from 2001-2008 nor his faith. How many of our linemen would start for other teams in the top 25? What about our backs? If Saban coached this years team they may win 8. Talent just not there. Boykin and Branden Smith are fast but can they cover. Talent just not there like it used to be.

Think about it…would you stay and play another at UGA the way the program has been the last couple of years, or be a high second round pick in the NFL. (if thats where he’s projected, I dont know). You can always get a degree later in life when youve got enough money put away. The only reason someone would stay and forgo the obvious money: Need one more year to develop into higher pick. Risky, ask Bradford, but where you are drafted does affect earnings long term.. Or: You love the program, teamates, fans, the whole scene of being a college football player on campus. I dont know. The minimum in the league is almost half a million..hmmm…theres the possible lockout…nah, take the money and run.

Yeah, just like Aurburn just got their butts kicked by losing Cam and Fairley..not to mention 4 out of your 5 starters on the O-Line. Enjoy that NC before the NCAA takes it away in a few years! I like how your school has become the flagship of what will become the new norm in college football-getting one and dones from JUCO schools, achieving/buying a championship, and undermining the whole point to playing for a college team and collegiate athletics as a whole.
BTW-Houston will stay. If he’s truly projected as a first rounder, I’m sure he would have declared at or around the same time as AJ. He can only get better in the second year of the 3-4 under Grantham (I mean, he was only noticed as being a difference maker because of the implementation of this system this past year) and he can get a lot bigger in his last season under Tereshinski. Make the right decision for you though Houston and good luck!

Kinda going overboard with the rightous indignation and cocern for the true meaning of college athletics, arent you? With like..zero proof..and besides Cam’s loser of a dad…not even an allegation. Nice try, it certainly sounds heartfealt, and absolutely certain, but your emotions arent based on any facts that I can see.

Sometimes it is possible for players to hurt themselves by staying in school. Years ago, Ken Swilling at Tech was widely considered a top 10 pick after his junior year. He stayed and had a terrible senior year. Wasn’t even drafted.

i totally disagree UGA insider. Joe T’s S&C program is going to make a huge difference. they have delayed the mat drills until after the G-Day game to “get an extra week in the weight room”. Thomas Brwon, who still holds all the GA weight room records, is now on the staff along with Tony Gilbert and Kendrell Bell.
This whole change in work ethic is going to pay huge dividends this fall and in years to come. The talent is there. Get them stronger and in better shape and they will be better on the field.
I’d rather play redshirt freshman like Mike Thornton and Stripling and Morant then to play seniors who won’t work.

No Wally, I said you were the flagship of what is going to happen in college athletics now by going out to grab JUCO players to rely on for a National Championship before they bolt a year later (if you read it properly). We could use a few JUCO players ourselves? I believe we’re only going after John Jenkins..who Auburn is also. Yeah, it’s perfectly within the NCAA’s rules to do so, but it will be a sad day when college football becomes what college basketball has. Here’s an example, we’ll use Cam Newton as an example by the way:
Go to one school (Florida). Obtain a stolen laptop/cheat your way through school. Decide to transfer to a JUCO school where said player excels. Go to another large school, do your one year service and excel yet again causing NFL draft stock to go way up. Leave school without any regard for obtaining a degree, any true passion for said school, a laundry list of offenses and POTENTIAL infractions on your resume. (It’s also known as cutting and running)..
I mean, Zach Mettenberger sexually assaulted a chick down in South GA, yet I’m sure he’ll do great at LSU next year after serving his JUCO “suspension” from major collegiate athletics. I like how college football has now started to use JUCO schools as a means to obtain players with shady histories and use them to their advantage.
And yes, I do consider the point to playing for a college team as a means to obtaining a degree rather than becoming a big time player-ask Andrew Luck, he seems to have enough common sense to grasp that point. And if you don’t think a free education in higher education is worth anything, ask the millions of Americans who either (a) can’t go to college, (b) have no means of obtaining a college degree after high school, or (c) are up to their eye balls in debt from the college degree they obtained. Free education for playing a game? Sounds good to me.
By the way cheeseball, I’m a college student with no children-try again..

There will never be another Hershal Walker. For that matter, there won’t be another Bo Jackson either. There are many pretenders, but they don’t work out. That combination of size & speed is tough to match. I have seen a lot of High School backs in person(George Rogers, Jamal Lewis, & many more). Best I ever saw in High School was Monte Williams of Commerce. Well, he just didn’t care, so he had no career. He could dom a sub 4.3 40 on a good day. What a waste of talent. I guess a lot of these players don’t care judging by arrerst records of many Schools.

Why are people trashing Caleb King in a thread about Justin Houston? Maybe the guy hasn’t quite been the difference-maker we all hoped but he’s the best RB we’ve got (yes, better than Ealey because he’s got better vision and lateral movement, he’s a better blocker, and he doesn’t fumble as much). Caleb may not be the nation’s best RB, but he could start for at least half the teams in the SEC and he’s been a warrior for us. The guy has been injured several times since his lofty HS ranking. In addition to all the leg injuries, anyone remember that he broke his jaw in the LSU game last year? I’d love to see UGA land a big-time RB in this next recruiting class but no need to bash Caleb. I for one am glad he’s a Dawg!

Green leaving was a no brainer. Houston should stay because he is a bubble player that could fall into the early part of the second round. He would be much better served to get a big year under his belt and turn himself into a top 15 pick. The money difference between an early second round and a top 15 pick is huge. He will never make back that lost money. His body will hold up for the same number of pro football seasons and he should get paid the most for each of those years as possible.

When all is said and done Auburn will be on probation. The boosters ar dirty and NCAA-SEC ,FBI know it. They will not get the death penalty though. I dont think any team will be given that again. It ruined SMU football program. They have never recovered from it. Any recruit going there is wasting his time. You will be transfering in two years begging someone to pick you up. Ask SMU if it was worth it. The scandel is already public. the case is being made, charges will be filed and heads will roll.

@Bernie Matt:
I am sorry but I have to disagree with you. There are many players on scholarship that you don’t see the contribution on the field but there are many other ways in which they help the program ie. scout team, work out, depth, etc
So to say that a guy does not deserve to be on scholarship just because he is not on the field, it is just absurd. Not everyone is going to get on the field. You can only play 11 on offense and 11 on defense. Let’s just say you have a 2 deep, that will be 44 players on the field. So for all 85 players to get playing time, You have to go 4 deep. I just don’t think that you will be substituting somebody who is 4th on the depth chart and putting that person to play instead of AJ Green. I could see a second string to give him a breather, but that is about it.
These players you are calling out and wanting out are there sweating and giving it all they have to hopefully get a chance to play. Now, if they were not working hard, then that is another subject and I do not think that CMR will put up with that. If he started to get rid of players who are working hard but just not getting to the field, then he would be no different than Saban and all the others. As a player, I don’t know if I would want to go play for guy like that. What if I get injured and can no longer play to my full potential but I’m still working hard to get back on the field. What then? Cut me and get somebody else in my place? Do you really think that is what a player deserves? Maybe they need to evaluate better before offering a schooly, but once offered, the player should be allowed to finish his career as long as he is giving it all he is got to the program even if that means not getting on the field.

Damon Evans, should get a lot of the blame when it comes to the strength and conditioning issues. It has been professed that Van Halanger and Coach Richt have wanted a nutrionist, personal trainers and a dedicated meal program, however Damon Evans would not pony up the money to get these people on staff. Van Halanger was going to step down anyway after last year. The issue is Evans had a stangle hold on the finances. Coach Richt wanted a indoor facility, Evans gets him a smaller one compared to others. The money was there but Evans wouldn’t do it. McGarity see’s what is needed when it comes to the facilites and the strength and conditioning programs.

he may make a liar out of me but Justin Houston is not close to being ready for NFL – good offensive tackles this year totally neutralized him because he rushes the same way every play – he just uses speed rush and often tackles could just run him right by the quarterback – never once saw him use a spin or other technique to get off a block – certainly a good athlete but he needs to work on technique – we need some more players like David Pollack and the kid from Calhoun that wanted to play for UGA but wound up at UCF playing defensive end – relentless – maybe not 4 star or 5 star but football players with heart

Being a true sports fan for life I wish the primadonna players would think of something besides “ME” all the time. “I think I’ll keep the spotlight on me till the very last second!” is so typical of players today. Come on and just do it, Houston! Go to the NFL and let your teammates and coaches (and fan base) know where your loyalty is. This sucks…

The NC game with AU and O

Apparently the Tv viewership ratings were down by over 10%. That is because most of Scam’s immediate family were at the game and did not view it on TV.
For 2011 and beyond, I worry about Victoryland dog track going out of business, be cause when Scam signs his NFL deal, all of the track’s patrons ( family members of Scam ) will be living wherever he lives; thusly guaranteeing that facility of going away.
AU will be hard pressed to win 8 in 2011. That otherwise fine school will forever be tainted by the Scam Newton ordeal of corruption and payola.
In the end, the grads wherever they go, will be faced with that rep. or they will hear the snickers and such. SMU was over 25+ years ago but folks still recall that scandal.

I have a college grad for a son. He is now 25. He was small but he was slow and therefore studied while in college. He “came out” three years ago as a BBA with honors, and is in corporate finance with a high tech N. Fulton firm and does well with $100,000+ deal, counting bonus, salary and insurance, stock, etc. He is a bean counter.
Now, had he been of JH’s stature and played big boy ball, I would have urged him to take the NFL money in order to secure his future. . He would have invested most of it and lived like a monk. He would have purchased a nice ride ( his 2 are paid for now ) and a modest new pad. He would not have 35 family members $$ draining him either.
For fans to bad mouth Houston is unfair. That has to be jealousy driven.
Good luck young man. YOU HAVE to do what is right for you and maybe your mom.

I love a good rumor. This came to me this morning. Who knows. With all that is going on in college football anything is possible:
In a surprise move that will no doubt catch the world of college football by surprise, sources have revealed that the Southeast Conference is preparing for a major expansion. These sources have indicated that the SEC will make a bold move to expand by adding no less than four teams to the lineup of what is unquestionably America’s best football conference. Moreover the very nature of the teams to be added will leave many observers in a cloud of shock and awe. Indications are that the grand old conference will seek to modernize its membership by adding four urban institutions to compliment its lineup of primarily traditional state supported members. Early indications are that the four schools under consideration are the University of Miami, the University of Louisville and the University of Houston. There still seems to be some ongoing consideration of whether to add the University of Memphis or the University of Central Florida.
Adding the University of Miami is a no-brainer and will bring to the conference one of the most storied programs in college football. Long known for its prowess in football, Miami, “the U” as it is often referred to, has a rich tradition in college baseball and has made vast improvements in its basketball program over the past decade while a member of first the Big East and now the ACC.
By the same token, the University of Louisville has a long and storied history as one of America’s premier basketball programs. The school has been traditionally strong in baseball and its football teams have been respectable over the period of the past two decades. No doubt with the exposure and the resources available from the SEC Louisville fans and supporters can anticipate continued development from its football program. The sometimes bitter rivalry between the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky will take on even greater significance as the schools compete in conference play.
The University of Houston is a bit of an enigma. The school, perhaps more than any other of the candidates, has a long and rich tradition in both men’s football and men’s basketball. Its football team can boast both a Heisman Trophy winner as well as a Lombardi Award winner, placing the program in the elite of a dozen schools with similar accomplishments. The school’s basketball program has a history of success dating back into the early sixties when it was a member of the old Missouri Valley Conference, before setting out to compete as an independent during much of the sixties and early seventies, when the school joined the Southwest Conference. In 1968 the now historical basketball match up between UH and UCLA in the Astrodome changed the face of college basketball in America. During the 80’s the basketball program became known as Phi Slamma Jamma, Texas’ Tallest Fraternity, and was a dominant force in the world of college basketball. UH thrived in the SWC winning championships in football and basketball. Moreover its track and field team became a national powerhouse, led by athletes such as Carl Lewis, Olympic champion and arguably the greatest athlete of the 80’s.
However, the Fates were not kind to the University of Houston. Four members of the Southwest Conference left the conference to merge with the Big 8, forming the modern Big 12 athletic conference. UH fans were shocked and dismayed at what most considered an outright betrayal. The school was a founding member of Conference USA but fan support for the school fell precipitously as former supporters abandoned the program, disillusioned and disgusted at the turn of events. UH languished in C-USA for a decade before a savior arrived on the scene in the person of former UH athlete Art Briles. Coach Briles brought the football program back to respectability and began the slow process of rebuilding fan support. When he moved to Baylor Briles was replaced by Kevin Sumlin who has continued the process of leading the program back to respectability.
In basketball former University of Texas coach Tom Penders similarly began the process of leading the team back to respectability and to its once accustomed position as a perennial NCAA playoff team. That baton has now been handed off to former Texas Tech coach and Eddie Sutton protégé James Dickey. Overall UH shows every evidence that it has moved on from the sordid experience of being abandoned by the schools of the Big 12 and has charted a course back to mainstream respectability. UH athletic programs are today once more nationally relevant and respectable. Moving to the SEC with its vast resources and media exposure will no doubt allow the school to continue to move to regain its once proud position as a perennial Top 25 program in both football and basketball.
But this is a win-win scenario. The SEC will similarly benefit from having a stronger presence in the state of Texas. Traditionally SEC schools have recruited well in the Lone Star State. Look for that trend to grow stronger. For its part Houston (the city) is the number 10 media market in the country, adding to the already vast exposure the SEC enjoys. Moreover it is reported that a stipulation for SEC membership will be that all conference games will be played in Houston’s Reliant stadium, located less than 5 miles from the UH campus and further adding to the prestige of SEC competition. It will be interesting to watch now as the schools of the Big 12 go head to head and toe to toe competing with the SEC for both athletes and for media coverage. There can be little doubt that this pending announcement from SEC headquarters will lead to many sleepless nights among the coaches and fans of the Big 12.
The decision over the admission of the final candidate appears to be a heated conversation with supporters of both programs pulling out all available resources to make their bid for membership. Both schools are also considered to be candidates for membership in the Big East, so all is not lost for the school not invited to join the SEC. Indeed it could be argued that joining the Big East might be a blessing in disguise since the programs of the Big East are not as competitive as those in the SEC, giving the new member a greater chance of rising to the top of the conference and perhaps to a BCS bowl game.
This is a major decision that will rock the world of college football and probably trigger another round of mergers and realignments among leagues and teams. It is interesting that the SEC decided that it would no longer be merely a spectator in this continuing evolution of NCAA football. Indeed with this move the SEC will once again assert its role as the leader among NCAA programs as well as among the BCS conferences. Stay tuned.
