Boykin, Glenn pass on NFL draft, will return for senior seasons

Cornerback Brandon Boykin and offensive guard Cordy Glenn, Georgia juniors who had been considering entering the NFL draft,  decided to remain with the Bulldogs for their senior seasons.

The official word came Wednesday night in an announcement from UGA, which said there was “not yet” word on whether junior outside linebacker Justin Houston will enter the draft.

The return of Boykin and Glenn is welcomed news for the Bulldogs, though. The two players have a combined 58 games of starting experience over the past three seasons.

“This is exciting news for Georgia and for Brandon and Cordy,” coach Mark Richt said in a statement. “I think they have both made wise decisions for the right reasons and will be important senior leaders for us this coming year. We’re recruiting 24/7 right now, but these two are a big part of our ‘recruiting class.’”

Boykin and Glenn were among the Georgia players who last month asked the NFL underclassmen advisory board for a projection of their draft stock.

Boykin, from Fayetteville, has played in 39 games, starting 24, in his three seasons at Georgia. He ranks No. 1 in school history in career kickoff return yards with 1,813, including an SEC-record three 100-yard kickoff returns.

Glenn, from Riverdale, has started 34 games for Georgia, including 32 in a row. He is the second Georgia offensive linemen to elect to stay in school after considering the 2011 draft; tackle Trinton Sturdivant last week announced his decision to return for his senior season.

In statements released by UGA, Boykin and Glenn cited their reasons for returning.

“After meeting with my family and coaches, I was able to put a lot of things into perspective,” Boykin said. “First of all, I want to be part of getting Georgia back into the championship hunt. Coming back will also give me a chance to get my degree before entering the draft, and another year of experience will only make me a better player as well.”

Said Glenn: “I want to come back for several reasons, including helping our team get back on track to where we want to be. Coming back will also give me a chance to improve my draft stock and get closer to my degree, which is important to me and my family.”

The NFL’s deadline for eligible underclassmen to enter the draft is Saturday. Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green, a projected top-five pick, earlier announced that he will forgo his senior season to enter the draft.

Dawgfan i agree with you surrounding the issue of standard of play. Over the past two years UGA has played with poor class, poor fundamentals, and overall it seems the players are starting to rule the coaching staff. All of these offseason arrests are just signs of a weak coaching staff.

I totally agree. Before Bobo play calling, we won SEC championship. Since he has been coordinator we have slowly gone down hill.

When do GT and UGA play basketball? When I was a GT, we played them twice.

Anyway, call me when we play hoops. We Techers ARE a basketball loving crowd because GT IS a basketball school in the ACC. We are elite. ACC elite. SEC??Clowns.

Call me when Tech playes UGA in hoops. We are known far and wide as a basketball school. No way UGA could beat us once much less two years in a row with some unheard of basketball coach. NO way.

Arghhhhhhhhh …………………$#%#@&&%% Whadayah mean that we lost to UGA again???

Let’s take a poll:

Gary Crowton is most likely out at LSU as OC.

If Les Miles offered the job to Mike bobo and he left and it cost us Rome, Crowell and Mitchell, would you be happy?

Yes or No

Everyone says it was worse when Richt was calling the plays, but when was the last time we won the SEC I think it was when Richt was calling the plays.

I’m at a loss of why Richt continues to complement Bobo when he is clearly a large issue it just doesn’t make sense. and i believe it comes from a lack of willingness to take responsibility and he wants to have someone to blame if things go wrong again this year.

Good news!! Now if some of the players will stop breaking the law and go to class we might have a chance to greatly improve this year!

Pepper Rodgers,
Uga already beat Tech in basketball this year. Uga was ranked until we lost last night. Yall on the other hand have not been ranked all year. The ACC is not dominant anymore in basketball or football. Even the SEC has more teams ranked than the ACC. Many of your fellow GT fans do not pay attention anymore to your program and hate coach Paul Hewitt. Therefore, you have no clue what you are talking about. So, you should probaby leave our blog that is not even speaking about basketball. Thank you

If Houston leaves he will be sorely missed on an underachieving defense that needs his talent. But from what I have heard red shirt inside linebackers Jarvis Jones and Richard Samuel were head hunters on the practice squad and we will also have Christian Robinson, Reuben Faloughi and Cornelius Washington back.

I agree with BadDog, Houston will will definitely be missed if he leaves. Personally, I think it would be in his best interest to stay and I am not saying this from a biased standpoint. I believe he truly would benefit from another year at school and a degree. Also, our defense will definitely step it up next year getting Samuels and Jones and the others. Plus, it is just our second year in a new defense so hopefully we will be more comfortable with the scheme.

The position I am more worried about over the linebacker core is the cornerbacks. Safety is pretty set with Rambo and that now sophmore whose name i can not remeber right now. Cornerbacks we have boykin but I really don’t see anyone who can counter him. Boykin is our only good cornerback. Smith is a great Athlete with some good ball skills, but he’s not a great cornerback. I do not see anyone else with some good cornerback skill.

@die hard dawg If Houston goes in the 1st round it would serve him and UGA well for him to go pro. Coaches point to these high draft picks in the program as recruiting tools to lure these 4 and 5 star recruits in.

Sanders Commings, Jordan Love and Branden Smith are going to be very good corners. They have the height and speed but just need to learn the system better. Also, this crop of freshmen coming in as Athletes and cornerbacks are going to be very good – I hope!

I’m not sure about Love. But Smith and commings are good. They are just not great. If you look at defenses with success such as Alabama, those guys are shut down corners and rarely allow major plays.

Dawginlex, please provide a quote where I said these guys weren’t “draftable.” I could give two holy craps if they are “draftable.” I said they are not SEC elite. I said they are not championship caliber players. I said that they would not start at SEC elite teams. Oh big whoop they are “draftable.” Half the damn SEC is “draftable.” I could care less. They are not even ready for big time SEC football. Cordy Glenn and the rest of the O-line are complete NO SHOWS against elite SEC defenses, particularly in the running game. Brandon Boykin gave up big play after big play in his career in the secondary. But they are “draftable” so everythign is alright.

Wow.

Other than losing AJ Green and possibly Justin Houston I don’t really see any seniors that are going to be sorely missed other than Durham, Chapas, Gamble, Dent and maybe Dobbs and Boling.

The O-line has been pretty bad over the last couple of years, but a lot of that comes from a lack of S&C. Hopefully, the right people are now in place to get that straightened out. If the S&C improves, then that alone will make the entire team a hell of alot better – bet on it.

M. Robinson? HAHAHHHAHAHAHA
All Athelets that are on scholarship should have to “pee in the cup” so to speak every week. I am sure Robinson just started to smoke dope. I am sure no other UGA player is smoking the wacky toebacky either.
I am not just picking on UGA. I mean all player/students on scholarship at any/all schools should take adrug test every week. I am pretty sure MV7 was smoking dope in high school and at VT too. Want to bet Cam smokes. Ealey and King do and you all know in your hearts they pass the blont.

Who said they wanted to GRADUATE? They have eligibility left that don’t mean they will graduate. That happens at every school. In college 5 years play 4 years and still not get a degree. It is called Degree shopping. Yes, they take the hours nessessary to Progress towards a degree but never enough in one field of study to get even close to getting a degree.

Boykin, Glenn, and Houston would not have been very high picks, so they have little to lose by staying. None of the three have more than marginal chances of playing more than 1-2 years in the NFL, and only then on scout teams.
