Boykin, Glenn pass on NFL draft, will return for senior seasons

Cornerback Brandon Boykin and offensive guard Cordy Glenn, Georgia juniors who had been considering entering the NFL draft,  decided to remain with the Bulldogs for their senior seasons.

The official word came Wednesday night in an announcement from UGA, which said there was “not yet” word on whether junior outside linebacker Justin Houston will enter the draft.

The return of Boykin and Glenn is welcomed news for the Bulldogs, though. The two players have a combined 58 games of starting experience over the past three seasons.

“This is exciting news for Georgia and for Brandon and Cordy,” coach Mark Richt said in a statement. “I think they have both made wise decisions for the right reasons and will be important senior leaders for us this coming year. We’re recruiting 24/7 right now, but these two are a big part of our ‘recruiting class.’”

Boykin and Glenn were among the Georgia players who last month asked the NFL underclassmen advisory board for a projection of their draft stock.

Boykin, from Fayetteville, has played in 39 games, starting 24, in his three seasons at Georgia. He ranks No. 1 in school history in career kickoff return yards with 1,813, including an SEC-record three 100-yard kickoff returns.

Glenn, from Riverdale, has started 34 games for Georgia, including 32 in a row. He is the second Georgia offensive linemen to elect to stay in school after considering the 2011 draft; tackle Trinton Sturdivant last week announced his decision to return for his senior season.

In statements released by UGA, Boykin and Glenn cited their reasons for returning.

“After meeting with my family and coaches, I was able to put a lot of things into perspective,” Boykin said. “First of all, I want to be part of getting Georgia back into the championship hunt. Coming back will also give me a chance to get my degree before entering the draft, and another year of experience will only make me a better player as well.”

Said Glenn: “I want to come back for several reasons, including helping our team get back on track to where we want to be. Coming back will also give me a chance to improve my draft stock and get closer to my degree, which is important to me and my family.”

The NFL’s deadline for eligible underclassmen to enter the draft is Saturday. Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green, a projected top-five pick, earlier announced that he will forgo his senior season to enter the draft.

Glenn and Sturdivant could easily be replaced. Seniority should not be a determining factor of who plays. Unfortunately Richt, doesn’t feel that way. There are a lot of very good players riding the bench while some lesser talented and underachieving ones play every week. You must play the best player you have for each position on every play. That has never happened under Richt. That is why we can not reach that next level.

Although I am a GT fan, I commend these UGA guys for making a wise decision. I believe UGA will have an improved record in 2011. Coach Richt has been good for UGA. I do not understand why so many UGA fans want him fired. Maybe its because their expectations are too high.

Houston should go if he is a $ pick(1st or 2nd round). Below that, stay in school. Never, ever, give up a chance to pick up the” big check”. You will regret it!

The good news is all the coaching staff is back. The bad news is they coached us to a 6-7 record last year. Name your team.

That is great new! Houston is a first rounder guys. I would love to see him come back, but I can’t blame him, if he turns pro. Now let us sign some top-flight players. Who really want to play, for the Bulldogs..

Honestly, they are not ready for a locked out NFL…staying in school gives them the opportunity to get a education they can fall back on which is much more important then playing a game.

I dont no any tougher 2 star school than boise st. without a dought the best coached team in the nation along side of TCU, another texas team that only recruits re-jects from texas yet that team wins wins wins

its not about how many stars, look who came in on our “O” line last year as a 2 star and ended up starting, he was the last player ga signed on signing day after da trick signed with tennersa!!! its about heart and desire yaaaw!!!!

recruiting is not a science but if you recruit spoiled brats your recruiting a BIG FAT HEAD-ACH—–why do you think saban runs off most of his non-conforments—he just dumps them and signs another.

PS—dawgs win with right attitude–hard work—and the larry munson affect—”OO” lady luck—god bless munson–just not the same without him!!!!hob nail boot up harold’s as—- as he fixes my over easy, smothered, covered yaaaaaaw, hahahahahah

The fact that either one of these guys thought they might be ready for the NFL is proof that our players are coddled and getting smoke blown up their butts by this coaching staff. Let’s keep it real. Glenn wouldn’t have ever seen the field if he played at Auburn. Boykin would be riding the pine at Alabama. These are not elite SEC players and they think they are ready for the NFL? Who could be feeding this notion other than the coaches?

dawgfan, you think these two players who were highly recruited would not sniff the field at Auburn or Alabama? Better yet you insisted that the players are being pushed to leaving early for the NFL by the coaching staff. I can tell you this no coach wants players to leave early. Where do you get your logic?

@dawgfan, although i susppect you are not…how absurd to think our coaching staff would be telling these players that they should declare for the NFL…are you kidding me?…the players ask the NFL advisory board where they were projected…not the coaches…and actually Glenn was rated pretty high, just for your info…whether they would start for the teams you mentioned really isn’t relevant…the fact is they felt that others who are probably better at evaluating these players than anyone on this blog might give them some insight on where they would go and what round…personally i didn’t think either one of them should leave, but that is my opinion and i don’t sit on any NFL advisory board…go dawgs

I didn’t say our coaches are encouraging anyone to go to the NFL. I said that these guys obviously thought they were better than they actually are if they were considering the NFL. That is a coaching problem. We are 14-11 over the past two seasons dude. I fail to see how this is so controversial.

Whether they would start for the teams I mentioned is irrelevant?!?!? Are you effing kidding me bro? Last I checked, we have to beat teams like Auburn and Alabama to win championships. If we want to do that we need better players than they have. Right now that is obviously not the case. Irrelevant? Good grief.

Before you question my allegiances, you need to look in the mirror pal. 14-11 in two seasons and you’re sitting here acting like I slapped your mom because I questioned this coaching staff and its players. You and those like you are doing this program no good with your excuses, rationalizations, and apologies.

Thanks.

dawgfan,

Considering Auburn’s secondary got burned repeatedly by Aaron murray, I’d say it is a pretty good chance that Boykin could have helped them. Glenn wouldn’t have started but he would have been in the rotations.

To say otherwise just makes you look stupid.

We are all upset over the last 2 years but making blanket statements you know nothing about just adds fuel to the fire making you look like an idiot.

Just relax and take a couple of breaths before getting out the venom.

All you people who are trashing Boykin need to realize he’s one of the best cornerbacks in the Nation. He is top 3 kick returner in the nation, and he is a leader on the Defense. Yal need to recognize Boykin was an easy 2nd or 3rd round pick. Especially for teams like the falcons or the chiefs who could use a dynamic player like Boykin.

Thanks for coming back boys! Can’t wait to watch another season of yal.(I’m just not looking forward to the Offense with Mike Bobo)

Oh good lord. That’s why I didn’t say anything about Boykin at Auburn DawginLex. Can you read? Details dude. Details. And I’m the stupid one?

I said Boykin wouldn’t see the field much at ALABAMA. Come to think of it, he wouldn’t see the field much at LSU either. Go ahead and disagree if you like, but don’t tell me this is irrelevant or that I’m not a true UGA fan because I think these things. You are not a true UGA fan if you think the kind of play we’ve been seeing the past 2 years is championship level or in anyway acceptable. Go ahead and run to the defense of these players and then watch us lose to another Conference USA team in a bowl game again next year. Whatever works for you.

**********************************************************************

Didn’t I say i wasn’t happy with the last 2 years? I see where you said Bama related to Boykin but you were making a statement that these two players would not be playing at other schools yet the NFL has them listed as being draftable.

So which is it? They are draftable according to the NFL scouts or they can’t play at other SEC schools according to you?
