Boykin, Glenn pass on NFL draft, will return for senior seasons

Cornerback Brandon Boykin and offensive guard Cordy Glenn, Georgia juniors who had been considering entering the NFL draft,  decided to remain with the Bulldogs for their senior seasons.

The official word came Wednesday night in an announcement from UGA, which said there was “not yet” word on whether junior outside linebacker Justin Houston will enter the draft.

The return of Boykin and Glenn is welcomed news for the Bulldogs, though. The two players have a combined 58 games of starting experience over the past three seasons.

“This is exciting news for Georgia and for Brandon and Cordy,” coach Mark Richt said in a statement. “I think they have both made wise decisions for the right reasons and will be important senior leaders for us this coming year. We’re recruiting 24/7 right now, but these two are a big part of our ‘recruiting class.’”

Boykin and Glenn were among the Georgia players who last month asked the NFL underclassmen advisory board for a projection of their draft stock.

Boykin, from Fayetteville, has played in 39 games, starting 24, in his three seasons at Georgia. He ranks No. 1 in school history in career kickoff return yards with 1,813, including an SEC-record three 100-yard kickoff returns.

Glenn, from Riverdale, has started 34 games for Georgia, including 32 in a row. He is the second Georgia offensive linemen to elect to stay in school after considering the 2011 draft; tackle Trinton Sturdivant last week announced his decision to return for his senior season.

In statements released by UGA, Boykin and Glenn cited their reasons for returning.

“After meeting with my family and coaches, I was able to put a lot of things into perspective,” Boykin said. “First of all, I want to be part of getting Georgia back into the championship hunt. Coming back will also give me a chance to get my degree before entering the draft, and another year of experience will only make me a better player as well.”

Said Glenn: “I want to come back for several reasons, including helping our team get back on track to where we want to be. Coming back will also give me a chance to improve my draft stock and get closer to my degree, which is important to me and my family.”

The NFL’s deadline for eligible underclassmen to enter the draft is Saturday. Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green, a projected top-five pick, earlier announced that he will forgo his senior season to enter the draft.

Glenn was not awful. He has been the most solid of all of them except maybe Jones. At the very least you can point to some occations when he was having a pretty good game, which gives hope that he might again. Which isn’t saying much, but it’s always better to have the depth than not, even if its just to have somebody to beat out. It also gives them more options. Gates can go ahead and move to RT. Frees up Strickland who can sub as a few different spots.. Probably keeps them from having to start Harmon , although it’s about time he forced that himself. He might be getting close? Looking forward to seeing Benedict and Burnette get in the game somewhere.

Jones Solid? Jones is DIRTY just like the AU’s Fairley. Ben Jones tried to end a MSU players career last year with a from behind Chop block 20 yards down the field.
Ben Jones is a POS but he is your POS, but Fairley is just a POS because he is not Your POS.

Good to get some good news. Here is some more: the staff is (privately) cautiously optimistic that recruiting will hold; Greg McGarity agreed with Richt, Bobo and Grantham and will increase the strength and conditioning staff from 3 to about 12; and both the administration and big money donors understand improvement is needed but are solidly behind Richt.

I can promise you: The flaming, whining and complaining you read on here absolutely does NOT reflect the attitude of those that matter in Athens. If you want him fired, you can give it a rest for a while. He is in good standing with those that count and he wants to be here.

Read between the lines. My draft assessment came back and I would not get drafted or would be a 6th to 7th round pick. Therefore, I am returning for my senior season. The big boys in the NFL are the real judges of talent.

OK it was not a CHOP BLOCK. Ben Jones wsent at the Miss St players knee from behind. Stright Shoulder to the side of the players knee trying to cripple him. It is more of a crackback block.

still@,

I have always assumed your name was in reference to UGA being a party school or the drinking related arrests of our players. I guess I was wrong. Call me paranoid or defensive if you’d like, but when there are so many of you Techie trolls on here wanting to knock UGA football down for off field issues, it’s easy to assume.

And you think Ben Jones is a POS for chop blocks?? Isn’t Paul Johnson the dean at Chop Block U???

Anyway, nothing will take away the fact that UGA beat you 42-34 a month and a half ago, which was one of the nine victories against you in the last ten years.

Boykin’s profile on the UGA site is not available, but Glenn is majoring in Education. Great just wahr we need. A person of color working in a government job. The stae of GA sucks in education and UGA turns out the majority of the public school teachers. what does that say?

Now quit being a typical Techie and trying to compare the dirtiness of our programs and accept the fact that head to head matchups are the best way to decide who is better than who.

Sandman,

I don’t think Jenkins has completely said UGA is in the lead, but I think it’s well assumed we are. Jenkins has admitted the UGA coaches have recruited him the hardest, and he wants to be somewhere where he can be a difference maker.

Awaiting a Mark Bradley article slamming these guys. I think that they made good decisions, both can make great strides, not only in their college games (hopefully, our secondary can get it together all around), and thier draft status. I don’t know about Houston, I think he will go pro, but wouldn’t be surprised it he stays. He is in that gray area of the draft, a prototypical “tweener”. He could really be a beast if he came back. Mr. SEC

January 12th, 2011
11:34 pm

I’m not a “know it all”, but I posted several weeks ago when Boykin and Glenn were playing around with entering the NFL early that they were not ready. I stated that all 3 (Sturdivant included), would find out just what the NFL thought of them. They did and they found out! Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they are back; maybe now they will get their asses in gear and get another year of experience and contribute to the team and not do it in a half assed way. Then, maybe they will get great information back to where their stock is with the NFL. Or maybe, they took my advice and read the article Fred Gibson had about leaving early a couple of weeks agoin the AJC. Fred admitted it was the worse thing he ever did; it is sad that it took Fred sedveral years to find out that he was not NFL material; even worse, it took Fred about 9 years to get his college education. But I do commened him on coming back to UGA after leaving his tour of teams in the NFL to achieve his degree! Now that’s a Damn Good Dawg! If you are part of the worse O-line in the country for the last 2 years, how in the hell do you think you are going to make it in the NFL. And Boykin, he can run faster than a deer, but he can’t play a lick of defense. I hope somebody at UGA will start giving out good, hard, and truthfull advice to players who want to leave early. Agents just want their money; they will tell you anything to get you to do business with them. I hope this will serve as a good example to players who follow!

Go Dawgs!

notice I gloat the score of the Tech/UGA game only when trying to prove a point to the Tech Teolls who are so bitter that they come to the UGA blog to talk smack.
