Georgia inside linebacker Marcus Dowtin has played his final game for the Bulldogs.
Dowtin, a junior from Upper Marlboro, Md., has been granted an unconditional release from his scholarship to transfer to another school, UGA said Tuesday without further comment.
Reports surfaced last week that Dowtin had faced a second-degree assault charge stemming from a Maryland bar fight last May. The case was resolved in December, but Georgia coach Mark Richt did not learn of the incident until last week. (See this AJC story for more details on the case.)
Dowtin, who appeared in 11 games and started two this past season, didn’t play in the Liberty Bowl on Dec. 31 because of what was described a coach’s decision unrelated to the Maryland matter. He was fourth on the Georgia team in tackles for the season with 57.

Every time a kid screws up, whether CMR is aware or not, it is always CMR’s fault.
The last 6, or 7 incidents, he has done exactly what is right. In fact, he has been over-the-top, with discipline.
Fran being upset over Mett is a joke. You get a case for something like that……….it’s time to roll out.
He made it sound like LSU was better than us for accepting a kid with a rap like that.
Beat a coach up for losing, or beat a coach up for letting the program get out of control, but when a coach lets a problematic kid go, cuz he’s a cancer, don’t rake him over the coals cuz the program is out of control. CMR is reeling the program back in right now (or McGarity is).

Dowtin was the best LB on the team . After last years performance he was the one I thought that could make a difference in 2010. He didn’t get much PT until very late in year but was 4th on team in tackles. If he was a cancer then good riddance. Robinson’s path to the ball was usually the long route. Hopefully he improves next year. Go Dawgs! Is Francis really that bad?

Good for Coach Richt getting him to transfer.Although he was good, you have to have players who want to be there and do things the right way. You play with who you got!! Looks like Richt is trying to right the ship. To all of you Dawg fans who are talking bad about UGA, you are only hurting the recruiting process. BTW, you can transfer with Dowtin!

I’m a devout Dawg fan, be real, kicking him off the team? really let it go and start fresh I understand the trust factor and he didn’t (Dowtin) tell his coaches, but man if you do it for one then do it everyone, you kick a recruit off the team but didn’t kick Lemay off so what’s the reasoning

Dowtin was not the best LB on the team and we will see that next year when Jarvis is knockin’ people silly.
Our LB’s will be better next year than this, due to recruiting some absolute studs at OLB and getting Jarvis and Richard Samuel back. There is a chance that Mr. Robinson will just be a good special teams player next year.
Lets see how it plays out…..but look at the measurables of the OLB’s we have inked in the last 2 hauls…..dang!

UGA is one of the best coaching jobs in the countrry – no need to win. All you got to do is have Rivals rank your recruiting class high, and then sit back and let the fans run their mouths.

After living in Atlanta, GA for over 10 years I got the chance to move to Auburn this summer and took it. I never read UGA blogs before because I liked my UGA friends and the excitement around SEC football. The AU/UGA weekend was always the best SEC weekend. Man, you people (me included tonight) that sit behind a keyboard and still talk about the Auburn game really need to get over it. UGA is in trouble, and Auburn will be next year, but we’re not gonna sit behind a computer and blame the best offensive and defensive player and coach of the year your loss. You lost because CMR has no heart. Didn’t it seem during you bowl game that he was asleep? No emotion, no fire, no energy, no TEAM! That’s what we did this year. Probably won’t happen again, but it was a fun, great year. By the way, you can smash each player behind your keyboard if you want, but I welcome you to come on down and see Cam, Zach, Nick and the boys come tutor kids at our school each week. I welcome you to come to campus and see the volunteer work these “stars” do. I welcome you to the barber shop that Gene let my son sit on his lap to get a haircut. Yeah, these guys are trash… Was a UGA guy, but now we are home in Auburn! By the way, I went to Kansas on a scholarship – I was the only “black sheep” that did not attend AU in my family.

Either there are people on this blog trying to start something or there is just a lot of idiots on here these guys that attend our program are grown men and are responsible for their own actions. I hate people on here that try and put the ownership on CMR. He is not a babysitter, yes he is the head football coach and the overall team is his responsibility, but he can’t be with these guys every minute of the day. When they’re in the recruitment process the only time Richt sees them is either at their parents house, official visits, or at their highschool there is no way Richt can tell what this person will do years down the road. You people act like you have done background checks on the individuals on the team and they all have prior criminal history. Not trying to make excusses for these guys but they are young and have a lot of growing up to do, and you guys on here are quick to label someone thugs. Some people on here might be surprised if they found out what their own kids are really doing when they are not around them. You can’t hold Richt responsible for the actions of eighty or so grown men when they are own their free time. You can only judge Richt by how he handles the situation and if he gets rid of the player than obviously he’s not condoning this type of behavior. When I was off in college I meet so many prep type kids who were doing things you prabably could’nt convince their parents they did even if you had pictures does that make them thugs. You can only teach someone so much than it’s up to them to make the right decision. Holding CMR responsible for grown men’s actions is simply not right.

Although he had some decent moments, Dowtin was another out of state linebacker (see Charles White, Akeem Hebron) who did nothing at UGA….Garner really missed on a lot of guys going out of state when he could have just stayed at home….it sounds like Dowtin had a lot of attitude problems as well, and Richt has learned that you cannot be tolerant about discipline….Richt should be commended on this one.

Regarding Stanford. As long as the big $$$ alums support the program they will be at the top. it takes a bad coach to screw up that situation. Look at their recruiting-nationwide, as not a lot of their starters come out of California. Plus what they have to offer players and grads in the long run. Hope they get Belotti to continue with the good teams. Now back to the Richt hating. Heard via Mojo Nixon that Richt is the evil anti-Elvis.

CMR will alway’s give a player a second and sometimes a third chance but the one thing he will not tolerate , and I agree , is for one of his players to be dishonest or to lie to him. You get no chances for that. You can teach a kid better ethics, integrity, and morals but if you are dishonest and are a lier at 18 years old it’s hard to change that behavior.

I hope that CMR know’s something the rest of us don’t and that the real reason Dowtin is leaving is because UGA needs his scholarship with so many recruit’s that will be signing up in the next few weeks.

Auburn should have had someone talk to the Arizona Cardinals about what type cleat to wear on that horrible field.
The PAC-10 had exactly 2 Top 25 ranked teams. Stanford got to play an ACC team oh great. An ACC team who by the way lost to Boise State and lost to James Madison. Stanford beat no one. Oregon therefore beat no one. Auburn has 7 wins over Top 25 final AP Poll teams. Oregon 1 Stanford 1.
Mark Richt is 2-11 vs Top 25 teams final AP Poll 2008, 2009 and 2010. Michigan State 2008 and Georgia tek 2009, with none this season at 0-5. 1-3 for 2008, 1-3 for 2009 and 0-5 for 2010 is 2-11.
Former players saying Mark Richt is not getting the job done :
HERSCHEL WALKER : recruiting in-state, losses, no discipline
FRAN TARKENTON : losses last 3 years, arrests / suspensions, Mark Richt not spending time on football, preacher’s son saying Mark Richt is really a missionary, signing recruits who go on to not play for Mark Richt going on forever, and Mark Richt lies (spins) cop-outs.
Another example of what Fran Tarkenton is talking about – MARCUS DOWTIN Mark Richt recruit from Fort Union Military Academy in Maryland.

In response to Einstein Georgia Fan-”North Georgia Dawg Fan”
If UT “swept it under the rug” then how does the entire free world know about it, and half the football team served suspensions, two players were kicked off the team, and the others were forced to do Community hours? Hmmm? Hmmm?
Richt=Fulmer. Both are/were great coaches who are experiencing the same fan base frustration that will ultimately cost Richt his job in a 24/7 SEC media monster driven world.

CMR did the right thing. The UGA fans who constantly put him down will someday realize their mistake. Not one blogger who says he should be fired has a solution therefore, each critic is a part of the problem at UGA. Either support your coach and program or find another one.

I can see where cmr didnt know due to out of state incident. Now your complaining about 4 and 5 star players being gone. When you were stating you wanted players that wanted to be here giving it there all for Ga. TCU and Stanford dont have the big number of star players like other programs due. Give cmr a chance to do what he and ad AD are working on.

If the event went down the way it was reported then Dowtin had to go. They said the video showed that he grabbed a girls arm. Another guy told him to let go of her arm. Dowtin punched him. The day of the Teflon athlete has to end in Athens. Players actions have to have consequences that stick to them. As I see it, Richt has been paying the price in the court of public opinion for what these boneheads have been doing.

So if the player has character issues, whose job is it too know this before the playa is recruited? THE COACH and his BooBoo’s!
All MR wants to do is run a Boys town. He care nothing about football, as per his closing presser, “Now I can focus more on football.” What a joke!
What the Frack was he focusing on? Mission work to help wayward youths and thugs come to UGA to play a little football and get religion. Thugs and bone heads is what he recruits. The level of players and their character has dropped severely since all of Donnan’s boys left.
UGA is now the biggest joke in football and you bonehead CEO supports are dragging us all down with you!

MR – Cleaning up the program? His biggest recruit for this year is a kid who was suspended for his entire senior H.S. season for some type of sex violation/crime… the only reasons the kid isn’t in jail is his Daddy is a preacher, He’s a 5 star recruit and he was underage when this went down. Great character recruit!
And all the boneheads, if you read the blogs can’t wait for the sex deviant to come and save UGA. Speaks volumes about the boneheads and their hero, the Tanned CEO of UGA.
What a load of Bull Dung!
And those of us who want the CEO removed from his lofty perch have offered many solutions to the issue of replacing Mr. “Now I can focus more on football”.
