Dogs are ranked for first time in eight years

For the first time in almost eight years, Georgia’s men’s basketball team is nationally ranked.

The Bulldogs are No. 24 in this week’s Associated Press poll -– the first time they have been in the Top 25 since the final poll of the 2002-03 season.

Saturday’s 77-70 victory over No. 10 Kentucky vaulted the Dogs (12-2, 1-0 SEC) into the poll. The win was Georgia’s ninth in a row, the program’s longest winning streak since the 1982-83 season.

Georgia, however, did not crack this week’s ESPN/USA Today coaches’ poll. The Bulldogs are fourth among teams “also receiving votes” there.

The AJC’s UGA basketball coverage from the past few days:

Game story: The win over Kentucky.

Mark Bradley column: In beating the regal Big Blue, UGA proves it’s big-time too.

Jeff Schultz column: Mark Fox succeeding in changing basketball culture at Georgia.

Next: Weather could ’severely’ impact Dogs’ travel to Vanderbilt.

Congrats to UGA on their poll ranking – not that it means much in b’ball compared to football.
More importantly, UGA’s RPI jumped up to #48 after the win over UK. As they play more conference games they have an opportunity to improve their RPI further.

Don’t know if I was more pleased with how we played Saturday or the fact that Stegman was sold out. This is what the program needs to allow Mark Fox to convince ‘his version of a Georgia Dream Team’ that they can make a name for themselves with Georgia’s basketball program. Keep it up guys, we may turn into a B-ball school yet.

One year ago, I was hoping that in year 2010-11, UGA could end up by SEC Tourney time being around 22 wins. Next step would be to win say …. two SEC Tourney games and end up with 24 wins overall. THAT would be huge for UGA come March Madness selection time. No one thought that was possible beyond the true believers from UGA.

This Vandy game is bigger now than the KY game, as we are on the road in inclement weather and Vandy is always a fine to excellent club. If we defeat them, then we can realistically shoot for that 22, 23 over all mark by SEC tourney time.

This year is about setting future expectations by the alumni, players, the coaches and the future UGA players. This year is the year to attract local talent and then develop it and keep it up. THEY are watching UGA with more than casual interest, I can assure you.

UGA needs to come up with the $$$ to keep Coach Fox in the hunt. HE is the UGA future. He is the real deal.

I did do my research. I said that “most” of the teams they play have terrible RPI’s. Have you looked at the RPI’s of South Carolina, Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Arkansas, or Miss St? None are in the top 100. Auburn can’t even break the top 300. There are a couple of good SEC teams and a lot of really bad ones to go along with them. If UGA wins half of the games against the good teams then they should easily make the tournament.

If Georgia beats Vandy I would expect Lunardi to have them around a 5th or 6th seed when he updates it later this week.

This team was completely calm, composed and focused against Kentucky. Never got rattled once the entire game! That is a sign of great coaching. Georgia will find a couple more big time recruits to commit knowing that they can come in next year and compete for the vacanicies created when Travis and Trey leave after this season.

Great start for the Dawgs!! We finally have a point a guard to go with our post players. If we could get some consistent shooting behind the arc we could compete for the SEC east. Travis Leslie is not a pro and as much as I like him there’s no way at this point he’s getting drafted. You wont find a shooting guard in the NBA at 6′4 unless you are just flat lights out. i.e JJ Reddick or Steph Curry and Leslie is far from that. He’s shooting 18% from 3pt land (3-16). I was around during the Harrick days and when you had Rashad Wright running the point with Ezra and Jarvis Hayes on the wings we could be down 10 and 2 minutes later be up 2. I don’t think this team has that fire power but they do have the post presence that most teams don’t. Its going to be interesting watching them develop this year. Great win vs Kentucky but the narrow wins vs Mercer and a bad E. Kentucky worry me. Vandy on the road is one of the toughest wins to get in the league. I don’t know the numbers but I only remember us beating them maybe once ot twice in the past 10 years. GO DAWGS!

This is why I sent my footbal donation to the basketball team this year. I believe in Coach Fox and I want to keep him.

Mark Fox…now, there is a coach. I am very proud of him and his team’s effort.

GO DAWGS!

Tee, I agree with most of what you said about Leslie. i think that he can play off -guard in the League, but only if he significantly improves his ball-handling skills so that he can consistently create his own drive/shots. He could use some international experience, perhaps, this summer and then come back and have a monster senior year. I am afraid that if he comes out, he will be drafted and then go on to become a marginal pro at best.

Great that georgia is now a basketball and gymnastics school. Hahahaha. Somebody needed to take the pressure off of your powerful 6-7 looozer football team.

Hahahahahhahahahahahah. Glad your fall started with the 45-42 game!

Hey dogs, might as well become a bball school because your fball stinks. Yes AU, AL, TN, LSU and FL have all won championships in the last 20 years and your team has been mired in mediocrity. Losers…..

Hairy Reid: Your mom turned on to watch Fox and UGA the other day during the Kentucky game. Fox is the best and hottest HC around right now. UGA is blessed to have him. I hope they lock him up with a contract!

Congrats on your win vs. my Wildcats. UGA played great and deserved the W. Good Luck to you the rest of the year. Fox is a heck of a coach and I had a great time at the game on Saturday…despite the L.

Why does UGA always have an excuse, calling Vandy’s Memorial Gym the quirkest floor in the SEC. The Bulldogs got beat hands down. Vandy Will win in Athens this year also. What will your excuse be then?

Vandy’s gym is quirky. Vandy deserved to win…you didn’t have long to enjoy it, did you,Vandy Man? The Dawgs are back on track with a thumping yesterday in Oxford. It’s amazing how many are so anxious to attack UGA. Glory, Glory!

I’m sure many of you watched that timeout with 2 seconds left in the game when UGA lost to Vandy?

That could very well be the turning point for this team. Like the announcers said…Fox had there attention…and whatever he said…struck home.

Then we see a 20 point Dawg blowout at Ole Miss and that is nothing to sneeze at. At times during that game….it was almost like I was watching Duke! Complete domination.

I get the feeling the Dawgs are about to go on a serious run!

Great win over Ole Miss, at their house!

Now, I had to come into this week-old blog to ask…
The announcers yesterday mention Bruce Pearl and he’s “ready for it to end…” or something to that effect. I just spent 30 mins searching here at ajc.com and could find nothing on the Bruce Pearl/Vols situation. Seems Pearl is suspended for 8 SEC games and the Tenn program is under serious investigation. But, I couldn’t find anything in the AJC archives.

It’s just “basketball”….why would the AJC have said anything about it? Yes, the SEC suspended Pearl for the first eight SEC games this year. He won’t be in Athens (at least at Stegeman) on Tuesday. He had numerous rules violations–the one coming to mind for me at the moment was having recruits to his home.
