Dogs are ranked for first time in eight years

For the first time in almost eight years, Georgia’s men’s basketball team is nationally ranked.

The Bulldogs are No. 24 in this week’s Associated Press poll -– the first time they have been in the Top 25 since the final poll of the 2002-03 season.

Saturday’s 77-70 victory over No. 10 Kentucky vaulted the Dogs (12-2, 1-0 SEC) into the poll. The win was Georgia’s ninth in a row, the program’s longest winning streak since the 1982-83 season.

Georgia, however, did not crack this week’s ESPN/USA Today coaches’ poll. The Bulldogs are fourth among teams “also receiving votes” there.

The AJC’s UGA basketball coverage from the past few days:

Game story: The win over Kentucky.

Mark Bradley column: In beating the regal Big Blue, UGA proves it’s big-time too.

Jeff Schultz column: Mark Fox succeeding in changing basketball culture at Georgia.

Next: Weather could ’severely’ impact Dogs’ travel to Vanderbilt.

Ranking will go up from here. Fox knows what he has doing and has enough horses to be a team that no one wants to play

Should be higher since we beat a Top ten team and only have 2 loses. Also a team we beat (CU) manhandled a ranked Mizzou.

The Vandy game will be more of a barometer of where the Dawgs are. They have not had success on the road. If this team can win 4 conference road games, then look out.

Congrats to UGA on their poll ranking – not that it means much in b’ball compared to football.
More importantly, UGA’s RPI jumped up to #48 after the win over UK. As they play more conference games they have an opportunity to improve their RPI further.

Don’t know if I was more pleased with how we played Saturday or the fact that Stegman was sold out. This is what the program needs to allow Mark Fox to convince ‘his version of a Georgia Dream Team’ that they can make a name for themselves with Georgia’s basketball program. Keep it up guys, we may turn into a B-ball school yet.

This team reminds me of the team led by Terry Fair
that was coached by Durham. They do not give up
and are not easily intimidated. Felton was a nice guy
but did not get the results. CMR…..you should feel
some pressure as we know what happened to your
peer.

Fox is the best basketball coach ever at UGA. I hope we can keep him for years to come.
If so, this year will not be an isolated season but a the start of a nice trend of Georgia playing some great basketball.

Now if the football team could watch and learn.

UGA only plays one more game this season against a ranked team and most of the teams they play have terrible RPI’s. One would think they have a pretty easy road to the NCAA tournament. Interestingly enough, Joe Lunardi still has them missing the tournament and not in the first four out. I’m not sure if I agree with Joe on this one.

One year ago, I was hoping that in year 2010-11, UGA could end up by SEC Tourney time being around 22 wins. Next step would be to win say …. two SEC Tourney games and end up with 24 wins overall. THAT would be huge for UGA come March Madness selection time. No one thought that was possible beyond the true believers from UGA.

This Vandy game is bigger now than the KY game, as we are on the road in inclement weather and Vandy is always a fine to excellent club. If we defeat them, then we can realistically shoot for that 22, 23 over all mark by SEC tourney time.

This year is about setting future expectations by the alumni, players, the coaches and the future UGA players. This year is the year to attract local talent and then develop it and keep it up. THEY are watching UGA with more than casual interest, I can assure you.

UGA needs to come up with the $$$ to keep Coach Fox in the hunt. HE is the UGA future. He is the real deal.

PS …………….has GT played UGA yet? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHHA

Go Dogs.

Let’s see, Fox leaves Nevada and the football team is now ranked and viable with their basketball program getting worse. Now at UGA, the opposite is true. Should Richt blame Fox? Any conspiracy theorists out there?

Fox has been saying now that this is his Destination job! With the great BBall talent in the state and moderate expectations year in and year out…Why wouldn’t you stay?!
