A.J. Green delivered the long-expected news Sunday: He will forgo his senior season at Georgia and enter the NFL draft.
For months, if not years, the star wide receiver had been expected to leave UGA after his junior season for the riches of pro football. And while he didn’t veer from the predicted course, he insisted that finalizing the decision came harder than many thought it would.
“Throughout the last couple of weeks, it was pretty hectic, just making a sound decision for my family and [me],” Green said from his home in Summerville, S.C.
He said he told Georgia coach Mark Richt of his intention on Friday but added that he wasn’t certain of the decision until Saturday.
Green is generally projected as a top-five NFL pick, with some draft analysts suggesting that Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck’s decision last week to stay in school could put Green in contention to be the No. 1 overall selection.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for me,” Green said. “This is a longtime dream since I was a little boy. I feel like my skills are up to par to make this jump. I feel like I proved myself in one of the best conferences in college football from day one.”
A three-year starter at Georgia, Green ranks third in school history in receptions (166) and receiving yards (2,619) and second in touchdown catches (23). His numbers would be larger if not for injuries that sidelined him for three-plus games in 2009 and an NCAA suspension that cost him the first four games of the 2010 season.
Green was suspended for selling his Independence Bowl jersey for $1,000 to a person the NCAA considered a sports agent.
Now, Green is in position to make tens of millions of dollars from his first NFL contract.
Even so, he said, “it was one of the toughest decisions I’ve made, just leaving the brotherhood I have made at Georgia. . . . I’m going to really miss the guys and the coaches.”
The 6-foot-4, 212-pound Green captivated Georgia fans with his leaping ability and knack for making improbable catches. But the Bulldogs had generally disappointing seasons during his three years, posting records of 10-3, 8-5 and 6-7, respectively, and he expressed regret that the team did not win an SEC championship during his time in Athens.
“It hurts. That’s what I came there for,” he said. “But things happen for a reason. I’ll keep working, and I’ll be a Bulldog for life.”
The Carolina Panthers have the No. 1 pick in the draft, and Green acknowledged it’d be nice to play so close to home. Charlotte is about 200 miles from Summerville.
“I’m pretty sure a bunch of my family and friends could make that trip easily,” he said.
But he isn’t assuming anything. “You never know with that draft,” he said. “It’s going to be a fun process. I’m going to work [to be drafted] as high as I can.”
Richt wished Green well, saying in a statement: “A.J. has made an immeasurable impact on our team over the past three seasons. . . . I’ve enjoyed the blessing of working with him and getting to know his family, and we wish him all the success in professional football. Once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog.”
Georgia awaits word from several other juniors who are weighing whether to enter the draft: outside linebacker Justin Houston, cornerback Brandon Boykin and offensive guard Cordy Glenn. Offensive tackle Trinton Sturdivant said Friday that he will stay in school for his senior season.

Not shocked but it still sucks, thought maybe since he missed the first half of the season he would come back. Can’t be too mad cause he’s got a chance to go #1, can’t pass that up. Still Georgia really needed him next year to rebuild.

What’s the career expectancy of a WR in the NFL? If you can get paid, go get your money. You can always come back and finish up school. If you’ve only got 8 years, why only get paid for 7?
It sure would be nice to see Crowell and Drew become the next two stars at UGA. It’s still possible to get eight of twelve on the AJC’s fab fifty list.

frank lane what have you been watching? it didn’t take an intelligent sports fan to look at aj green’s HIGH SCHOOL highlights to see that he’s a once-in-a-generation (if not once in several generations) talent. he did stuff in high school that nfl veterans only dream of doing. go to youtube and search aj green and watch some of his summerville video. and then remove your idiotic post. sure, he may not have a great nfl career. anybody can get hurt or get put in the wrong system. look at herschel walker post-dallas. nobody ever used him properly, but he STILL had 18,000+ nfl total yards. but if aj doesn’t become a great pro, it won’t be because of lack of freakish talent.

Nice decision AJ….loved you in the Red & Black but when it’s time to make a career move, then you have to do what’s best for you. I remember a Yellow Jacket back in the early 90’s by the name of Ken Swilling. He stayed a year too long and missed his “cash” boat. Same thing with James Forrest, now that I think about it. Perfect examples of why it’s not always the best choice to stay a year longer.
Good luck!

I am very proud of A.J. He is an excellent young man and a great football player. I truly believe he will be the best WR in the NFL in 3 years. He is the total package. I wish the Falcons could draft him, but he will be long gone by the time they make their selection. I would love for the Panthers to select him with the 1st pick. The young man is from South Carolina and that team needs a lot of talent. A.J. is the best receiver I have ever seen. He makes catches that are incredible. A great talent. Once a Dawg always a dawg. Best wishes A.J.

If there is anyone out there that is actually shocked by this, you need to know that this is the new world in college football. It is 3-and-done and – coming soon to a college near you – don’t be surprise to see redshirt sophomores making the jump.
This is why recruiting and reloading is so much more important today than it ever has been. Freshmen need to be ready to play right way.
P.S. Andrew Luck is an idiot.

I agree AJ should go pro now, as the $$ may not be there next year. But, I do agree with Frank Lane that AJ DID NOT live up to his full potential. True he make some dang good catches, that included some very acrobatic moves, and led the dawgs in all receiving categories, but we have had better If it matters, I say to AJ, take the money and run. That is about all that can be expected of most college athletes today. Oh, wait… some like Andrew Luck to care about the “team”. But, I guess he and all those that decide tro come back are clueless. In terms of the stupid and negative comments, it is sad to see GT fans change screen names just to write something stupid. Yes, UGA is struggling. Yes, A.J. Green is the greatest WR in UGA history. Yes, A.J. made some mistakes like all college kids. Yes, he made a great decision to become rich. Yes, he will earn more than a GT engineer. Yes, UGA had a tough season. YES, UGA defeated GT yet again. We defeated GT during one of worst seasons ever. What does that say about GT? NO, Reggie Ball nor Joe Hamilton majored in engineering. No, GT is not as good as they were with Gailey’s recruits. GT fans need to wake up. We beat you in football and basketball. Both of your programs are in trouble and all you can do is throw insults at UGA. That is sad.

For : In 2012 the NFL Agreement will probably have a cap for rookies.
It would be hard to get enough insurance to make up for a career-ending injury to a 1st-rounder.
Against : There may not BE a 2011 NFL season, and he might still be subject to the rookie-cap.
He better do well in the Combines, because his game against UCF wasn’t 1st-round-worthy.

Now go out and recruit players that want to play four years for GA. You have to make up your mind if you want to be a minor league team for the NFL or a championship team. I feel certain that our passing game this year suffered because of the emphasis on AJ. Therefore also it cost equal emphasis on the Running Game. If UGA does not get a pair of good running backs that can play and improve along with an OL that can run block first then pass block it will be a long time before UGA is on top again. You have to coach the team up to make the team be a good running and passing team….and also you cannot forget the defense and special teams.

I keep hearing about this AJ never played up to his potential crap. You are right he never did but than again nether did Stafford or Moreno. Why…… cause of poor coaching. Why should AJ come back and play for a team this bad with coaching this bad. AJ was a great player in a bad system. I mean Florida goes out and gets Charlie Wiess and the best we do is Mike Bobo. Give me a break i would not come back to this garbage either. If Georgia wanted AJ to stay they should have made a better effort to show him they want him. Why the hell would anyone want to come back to a Mike Bobo ran offense.

Now Green can sell his c_rappy Liberty Bowl and not get penalized for it. He can make money off his own name, instead of just the NCAA and UGA running the plantation system. It must be hard for Richt to tell these adult players of his not to make money or even sell their own property (jersies) that were given to them. I mean he’s only making $3 million or so. That wouldn’t make him or the NCAA hypocrites, now would it. No, they are the only ones who get to profit off the players names and jersies.

It’s a lot easier for your college team to be more imporant to you than a pro career when your dad’s a former pro athlete and an athletic director at a major D1 university. Finances have never been an Andrew Luck issue! I’ll betcha if Luck had the economic history of AJ Green he’d have opted for the draft on the 1st day possible. I still think that a scholarship given by a University to an athlete should be a binding contract and if the athlete wants to back out of it after 3 years they should have to repay the university for the missed 4th year. I also wonder what the athlete would say if the university came to them after 3 years and said, “well we have found a better athlete and we cannot continue your scholarship for the 4th year. Tough luck, but remember, it’s all about business, and nothing personal. Certainly you will be able to find another univesity to pick up your 4th year” As they say, what goes around comes around.

AJ is the most overrated WR in the history of the SEC. All he does is make acrobatic catches… Thats it. He wont block, he’s too skinny to be physical, and he doesnt have elite speed. He will be a major bust in the NFL. Julio Jones, Alshon Jeffrey, Greg Childs, and Darvin Adams are all better than AJ. Never lived up to his potential. He is all about himself and not the team. Good Riddance.

A very good impact player. Injuries and money grab prevented him from making a more significant contribution to the team. Hopefully we’ll see him play and do well on Sundays. I mean come on he played in a weak ass system under Mike Bobo and still shined. So what if he sold his jersey, Did you know the money that came from said jersey went to charity. Man what a thug, How dare he give money to charity. AJ Green was the best Georgia had and it is a shame to see a bunch of unintelligent morons bad mouth him for making a decision we would all have made ourselves. Why again come back to to play under Mike Bobos system. Lets face it Georgia is NOT going to win a championship SEC or National so WHY would he come back. AJ was decent impact, 5-3 with him, but that’s not the answer.
Georgia’s got to find the running game, stop trying to throw the ball for 300 yards a game. That’s NOT how you win the SEC.
Look at Auburn this year, Alabama last year, Florida 2 years back, all won it running the ball for bout 250 a game.
Hello Ealey, take this team on your back and let’s see how far we go.
P.S. Richt’s 40-3 when he gets a 100 yard rusher, and undefeated when Ealey gets 100 yards rushing.

I know everyone is happy for AJ and rightfully so, but he, Stafford, and Moreno were all three great players at Georgia that never brought a championship. they all left early and if they would have stayed their senior years Georgia would have competed for something special. Plain and simple, A J was going to go PRO from the day he left high school and he was going to go just as soon as he was allowed to by the rules. If the Bulldogs had been in the big dance and won it all, he would still have gone PRO. What kind of degree would he have received if he had stayed for his senior year? Luck on the other hand, appears to be a student first, player second and he will get a valuable degree to use. The money will still be there when he goes PRO, but he will have a sheepskin worth something as well. It is all about your objective in life. Luck is one of those fortunate to be both a scholar and a fine football player. The two players made the best choice for their own personal conditions and both are right.

You guys should petition GA. Tech to change their offensive system, and philosophy and come play in Atlanta where black folks will appreciate you and your skills. That would be a true dream team, and btw black folks won’t be calling you thugs and and other offensive names. If anything Green could have a beef with the Dogs offensive staff that he was not used as often, or as effectively as he should have been. Yet he never complained.
Overall, his career may not have been perfect, but obviously he is a special athlete and other than the bonehead jersey sale deal, he seems to be a good kid. And yes, let’s remember that he is still a kid in many ways.

Couldn’t agree more! Also I think people forget about PEP(Post-Eligibility Program) that works with student-athletes that leave school early to come back and finish their degrees.
There have been some pretty high-profile stars that have taken advantage of the program and completed their degree:
Shaq, Vince Carter, Champ Bailey, and Herschel Walker just to name a few.
BTW- I think with 30-40 million in the bank, AJ will be able to afford paying for his last year of school.
As far as Andrew Luck is concerned, he should ask Matt Leinhart how turning down being the number 1 pick to come back for his senior year worked out. Jake Locker will probably have a similar story as well.
Anyone who critcizes AJ for taking care of his family is a turd.

Telling a kid to wait for the NFL is dumb. He can always get that degree. With gimpy knees and a fabulous home on Lake Oconee, driving a fine Range Rover, Benz, BMW or a Ford F 150 red truck to and fro to Athens for a couple of years for that wrap on your degree at age of say 31???? Not a bad way to go with Mom and Dad sitting on YOUR DOCK at Oconee and having no worries. i dont blame him for going pro but i have mixed emotions. he could have been tossed of the team for what he knowingly had done and the team suffered for it. he was lucky they didnt. new defense and qb could have used his help. maybe another win or two. so i dont kiss his a@$ that much and so shouldnt anyone else. he is a dog for life but i have mixed emotions. i guess the best way to put it is…..good luck in the nfl , thanks for the awesome catches……..dont let the door hit you in the a@$!

@ Billy “redneck” Bob@11:29am…,I didn’t say UGA wanted to be white lilly, i said old dawg fans want them to be. The school itself realizes it would be at a disadvantage, but its old racist fans(such as yourself) don’t, and those are the ones that’s making all the noise, and . So if you’re going to come at me, get it right before you come! Instead of tagging blacks, you should be tagging your tea party friends. If i call old dawg fans racists, it’s because that’s what they’re showing everyone. And your name shows how much of a racist you are!

Is it really a shock? When he used the sale of a jersey as an excuse for taking cash from his agent you didnt see it then? Look for Uga to repeat the same 6-7 in 2011.

why come back to the 2011 team—they will be lucky to win 6 games and he might get hurt or suspended by the ncaa for some new made up rule! But, let cam play—that $180,000 “can’t be found!”

anyone who has anything bad to say about a.j. is simply upset that he will not come back. he doesnt owe us anything, WE didn’t get him to where he is, he did that himself.
to the people saying a.j. cost us our season, WAKE UP. how terrible is our team when ONE person determines if we are championship worthy or mediocre at best? and if you want someone to blame, blame BOBO, RICHT, AND MURRAY. the UF game easily wouldve been won had our “amazing” R.F. qb thrown the ball to a.j. more than 5 times. OR you could blame the S.C. game on ealy for fumbling on the 1, and the Colorado game on king for fumbling in the redzone. A.J. has hands down been the best receiver in UGA history. ahead of Hines, Brown, MoMass, edwards, and all the others.
good luck in the NFL, and i pray that ATL can somehow find a way to trade up into the top 5 and steal you.
thanks for the great memories and the even greater catches, now go get your well deserved payday!

talk sports not politics. your painting with a large brush talking about the ‘tea party’. someone has to work and make money so others can get theirs from the government. just ignore, many just try to stir the pot. say like tech fans who obviously dont have a blog. lets keep it nice. signed………. evil tea party conservative who knows its not the feds job to make do for me.

he didnt cost them the season, but hurt his team. could have gotten kicked off. they may have at least 1 or 2 more. if he gets kicked off he isnt a top ten pick. drafted well but not top ten. he hurt his team. if you dont think 1 player of a.j.’s caliber should make a difference, ask texas. sometimes it does.

I have been a life long bulldog fan. All I can say to Green is good bye, and good ridance. You took from Georgia, and gave little in return.
With Green finally gone lets get down to replacing him. Green really had one complete year out of 3 played, (injuries in year ‘09, suspension in ‘10). and never full reaching his potential. Yet how can this guy be considered a #1 pick in the nfl?? Go DAWGS

I am not sure why he left UGA early…He could not win a state title in High school Football and got whipped by Byrnes high School. He accomplished nothing in college football. If I were him I would want to win a big game, win a conference title,Win a national Championship,Be a Heisman candidate. What did he he actually do???? nothing He DID NOT PUT UP THE NUMBERS IN COLLEGE!!! Sold a shirt ..got suspended possibly blowing the season. Yep he threw his team under the bus. And yep ! what is the obvious choice. Get out of the SEC as fast as possible and get drafted by the worst team in The NFL. Best of luck in double coverage. Prediction:Will only last 1.5 seasons.
Wish I could say thanks for the memories

Thanks for being a “Dawg”. I know it may not have turned out exactly the way A.J. wanted here but there’s no denying the excitement he brought to the Georgia football program.
He will do well in the NFL . I’m sure the georgia fans will follow his career with excitement. Too bad the Falcons can’t work out some kind of trade and bring him to Atlanta. He would look great in “Red and Black”. That would be exciting to watch with the receiving corps that’s currently in place.
I will root for A.J. no matter where he goes to have a good career but I am a die-hard Atanta Falcon fan and must stay with my team when he plays against them.
Thanks again A.J…

You are so right in your statement that AJ does not owe us anything. He sure doesn’t. But he did owe UGA 4 years play for a 4 year scholarship. True? Sure is. But, like many others, I am glad he is gone. And this is not in spite, it is because he causes such a distraction to all the other players who work hard and want to win. Now AJ can get his ultimate goal of mega bucks in the NFL. All else I have to say is he better enjoy that and save as much as possible because he won’t last long at that level. As for a collegiate receiver I would take Kris Durham over AJ anyday. He gave his best and didn’t sell anything along the way. He wanted to win so bad that did you see him crying after the bowl loss. He CARED!!!

Players like Green have no desire to get a college degree . They stay eligible just long enough to go pro ( See “Cash Newton” ) .It is a joke they are paid that kind of money to chase a leather ball. Try walking a combat patrol in Iraq or running into a burning building to save a child.

The schools make millions of $$$$’s off these athletes’. The coaches makes millions of $$$’s, change schools whenever there is a better offer, suffers no penalties, and no one complains. Yet everyone is upset when the players take advantage of their economic opportunities. If AJ was your son, would you seriously advise him to return to school unless his family already was financially secure like Andrew Luck???? Best wishes AJ!!!

A.J. Green, you totally SUCK ! You’ll be forever remembered for ruining the 2010 UGA season, (just so you could pocket $1,000 from selling that oh so valuable Independence Bowl jersey) and not for the mega millions you’ll receive from the NFL! You sold out your teammates, your coaches and the Bull Dawg Nation and THAT is how you’ll be remembered forever! Eat dirt, A.J. I hope the NFL owners lock you out !

His frail body won’t last a whole season in the NFL. He should have stayed one more year to get bigger and stronger.

I know its $$$$$$$$$$……but after your faux pas that cost you and the Dawgs last season, would’ve been refreshing to see you in the ole red n black in 2011. While I wish you success in NFL, you owed UGA another season. The $$$$$ would’ve still been there.

no big deal—green took the year off anyway—he was a non-factor in the big games. Richt needs to find some big game players who follow rules, or this will be his last year.
