McGarity: ‘We are working as hard as we can to turn this ship around’

Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity wants to see “improvement in all areas” from the football program this year. And he’d like the public to see more displays of coach Mark Richt’s passion for his job.

Those were among McGarity’s comments in a conference call that was held Thursday to answer reporters’ questions about the state of the Georgia football program, which last week lost to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl to finish with its first losing record (6-7) in 14 years.

McGarity previously had answered the biggest question, saying Richt would return as coach. Here are highlights of what McGarity had to say Thursday:

Q: What did you think of Richt’s end-of-season news conference on Wednesday?

A: I think he started to show the passion he has for the job. Mark is not the type who is going to get out of his skin, so to speak, as far as the way he handles himself. But I know in conversations we have had all through the season and especially in the last two or three days, his passion has really come through. . . . I think that’s something Mark needs to do more of –- show his passion and express it in ways that perhaps he hasn’t done before. I encourage him to do that. And I thought he addressed a number of issues and basically stated what he wanted to do moving forward.

Q: What are your expectations for the football team next fall?

A: Improvement. Improvement in all areas. We want to see improvement in discipline; we want to see improvement in leadership; we want a passionate team. We want every member of our staff, regardless of what sport it is, to be passionate about being here. We want individuals that are invested in our program, that want to do everything it takes to get us to the next level.. . . We are stressing two focal points as an association in 2011. One of those is to have a sense of urgency in everything we do. And [the other is to] have a very high level of accountability [with] every employee we have. . . .

Q: Would you ever establish an ultimatum – a certain number of wins – that Richt or any coach would need to reach [to keep his or her job]?

A: No, across the board. In our first meeting we had with all of our coaches [after McGarity's hire as AD] back in September, that was one point that was made very clear. All our coaches know what is expected of them; they are expected to compete for championships, to be in the hunt. So I’m not here to put a figure on number of wins and everything. We just want to see improvement. We want to see a program that is headed in the right direction, all our programs. That’s the goal. That’s what we’re doing. And if we see shortcomings in certain areas that are outside the lines, then that’s our responsibility to do everything we can to take care of those and address them so that our coaches can focus on coaching, recruiting and watching the student-athletes graduate.

Q: Richt mentioned you had helped relieve him of some administrative duties. . . .

A: Every person has strengths and weaknesses, and I thought one of Mark’s weaknesses was that he was trying to do so much himself. He was the point person on so many issues, whether they be academics, discipline, things of that nature, to where it was so time-consuming . . . [and] almost impossible to focus really on the X’s and O’s of the game in every phase of the game. So as you analyze things, you look, you listen, sometimes you wonder, ‘Why is our head coach the point person there?’ …

Q: Was there a tipping point during the season when you decided in your mind you were not going to make a coaching change?

A: Yeah, I think the Monday after the Colorado game was probably the most telling day. I think that’s when things really started to jell, so to speak, as far as [Richt and McGarity] getting to know each other better to where we did not feel maybe afraid to just be brutally honest with each other. . . . Basically from that point forward, everybody was really upset and we wanted to change things and Mark was very proactive there. And as we continued to improve, I think the stats will show that leading up to the UCF game we were scoring close to 40 points a game for seven games in a row. Things were on the upswing. I mean, we had a tough, tough loss to Florida, and we had a difficult loss to Auburn. There is no question the effort was there. I know people don’t like to hear about ‘we were close,’ but we were not out of those games until the end of the game. And we just basically couldn’t close those close games. . . . And then we go against a UCF team that I think unfortunately people don’t give enough credit. Coach [George] O’Leary has done a phenomenal job down there. . . They played a great game, maybe their best game of the year, and we did not. And at the end of the day you’re going to lose games like that. But I think the tipping point was maybe how we responded after being 1-4.

Q: What is your reading on the pulse of Bulldog Nation? And what has been your response to people you’ve heard from this week, particularly those calling for change right now?

A: It’s interesting. I don’t want to say it’s been 50-50, but it’s probably been pretty close to that as far as people supportive.  You’ve got a certain faction of fans out there that aren’t just disappointed; if they don’t have change, they’re going to drop out of the program. I understand the frustration. I think everyone here is frustrated. But everybody in this building and anybody who is on our staff, they’re working hard to turn this thing around. And I know we can do it. . . . I wish I could turn a light switch on and change it overnight, but people are going to have to make decisions on, ‘Do they want to hang in there with us, or do they choose to do otherwise?’ The way I look at it is that people who support our program, it’s really supporting our [whole] program. I know they’re frustrated with football right now, but what is so important is that their contributions go into funding every sport that we sponsor. So in essence if we have some that are pulling out of the program … they’re basically pulling out of making a contribution that helps us in every facet of our operation. But I do understand the frustration, and the only thing we can do is to say we are working as hard as we can to turn this ship around. And after we get it going, then I think you’ll see a lot different reaction.

Q: How would you characterize your discussions with Richt in the past few days? Have you learned anything about him you didn’t know beforehand?

A: Even though you know the right things are happening, even though you know he is working extremely hard to turn this thing around, I think everybody wants to hear, ‘Hey, I am passionate about this work; I am doing everything I can to turn this thing around.’ Bottom line is, I think the conversations we have had have been very reassuring that he has the ability [to] maybe go back to the way he might have been doing some things earlier in his career. He admitted he is really looking forward to studying the game. When you’re so concerned and so ingrained in all these other things that are outside the system, something has to lag behind; something basically has to be moved to the corner of the desk. I think what we’re seeing now is that we’re kind of clearing the deck so Mark can get back to doing the thing he really enjoys doing, and that’s doing what he talked about [Wednesday] as far as studying the game and getting back into all phases of the game. I think that’s the healthy part about it. I know he’s passionate about it. We’ve just got to get to where we are expressing that more frequently.

Snoop Dawg doesn’t like McCavity’s ignoring and smoothing over our incompetent coaches one bit. and he bristles when he implies that about 50% of the fans are to blame, but he is right. The 50% of the milktoast fans who don’t care about the dismal state of the team and have some sort of charismatic paralysis under the spell of da Preacha Man are really to blame for the mess we are in.
But…
Look at it from another view. McGarrity really can’t tell the public what his real strategy is. He has probably concluded that it wouldn’t be smart to change Richt out prior to signing day. Maybe they have an eye on a certain coach that they are in contact with already. Maybe the plan is to go into next year and when Richt and Co lay eggs all over the stadium, perhaps when they embarass the Bulldog Nation again in Jacksonville, then they will pull the lanyard and already have a new coach and staff lined up.
I know that hope is not a method, but surely McCavity is not as stupid as he sounds nor does he think that the Bulldog Nation as a whole will accept the crap that is his storyline today.

In the meantime, any Bulldog who love UGA and its football Tradition is obligated to keep the high heat on McCavity, Adams, the Board of Regents, and the Guvnah that we expect nothing less than the best proven head coach in the country, regardless of cost, and that we expect it NOW. Being in the hunt in perpetuity without championships is not a goal I sign up for or will accept. I
If McCavity has to cover for Richt like this and tell us all that behind closed doors little Mark really does show a little passion and has agreed to study the game of football harder while daddy does all his chores for him, then it is obious that the Three Million Dollar Man is incpabable of performing at the level required.
How many of you make $3M per year? Do you think you could make top salary in your occupational field with substandard performance year after year, taking credit for others’ work? Then why do all these zombies who support Richt to the 9s see nothing wrong with this. This is public money, for god’s sake. It might come from contributions, I’m not sure, but it is public money.
It is not the fault of alumni who refuse to contribute to an administration which does not insist on the standards we expect for our football team. Those other UGA sports teams that also live off those conributions need to blame McCavity and Adams instead of the thousands of hard working alumni who have to make their money by working hard and SUCCESSFULLY, unlike Richt.
In summary, this is revolution_
OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!

This interview is nothing more than a courtesy BS doublespeak session to have it appear McGarity is “on top of things” and has the “pulse” of the Dawg nation, and he is going to “put the screws” to Richt and his program.

Well, he has seen fit to “free up” Richt to actually do some coaching now, so I guess everyone should expect a national championship next year.

That is a bunch of hogwash.

If Mac wants to waffle on the decision for another year, so be it.

Won’t matter, He will still have the accountability to have to fire Richt next year, because one thing is for sure – a tiger can’t change his stripes.

Nuff said.

“…we are working as hard as we can to turn this ship around.” The problem with turning ships around is directly related to size & weight of ship, speed of ship, course of ship, & location of ship. Our ship has a lot overpriced cargo moving fast in shoal waters. The over-rated, ill-recruited player cargo & possible coach cargo is causing the ship to list 70 degrees starboard. Got to get the ship balanced…Going fast in trouble waters too near the shore to avoid a crash.

Tim:

Out of the office yesterday so am late getting this to you:

Two unrelated sources in the UGA Athletic Department have told me the obvious – wins and losses are important to Richt’s future but the bottom line will always be money and money is what is worrying athletic administrators at UGA.

This year’s performance is anticipated to cost UGA significantly in donor funds and season ticket renewals. Coupled with an indifferent home schedule next year that will not attract single game ticket buyers and will leave thousands of sold tickets unused, the bottom line financially is going to troubling.

Don’t think so? Interest in the program is already declining. For example, sold tickets to the Liberty Bowl declined by 11,511 from last year’s matchup. OF ALL THE BOWLS GAMES, only the Gator Bowl (15,804) saw more of a decline this year when compared to last year’s ticket sales.

So, what does this mean? Seven, eight or maybe even nine wins next year will not stop the financial bleeding caused by program’s decline. With the AD’s philosophical switch to scheduling easy wins with no name teams that will sell hundreds, not thousands, of tickets to these team’s fan base – a glut of single game tickets will be available and unused. Combine this will the alarming indifference of the student body and, because of the more difficulty students have in selling their tickets because of the “ticketless” way students get into games – look for embarassingly large gaps of empty seats in Sanford Stadium beginning next year. This is bad for the athletic department and has the Athens business community incensed.

All the things the AD mentioned would normally be in the PC to announce why you fired the coach instead of retaining. When you have to tell the Coach to act like you’re interested in your job then the battle has already been lost. The AD should have said..”look folks ..we don’t have the damn money to buyout this chump so it is what it is”..

I too am frustrated as many of you are above. Here is my belief. McGarity has learned from one of the best AD’s in the country (Jeremy Foley) having spent 17 years @ UF. I think he has taken this time to access the areas of weakness and build a plan to correct them..i.e. removing some responsibilities from Richt. The ONE big concern I have is to access and build a plan will not correct HEART which I feel we have lacked. We need an attitude of instilling fear in opponents not one like Vandy where each week a team feels thay have a resonable chance of beating you on the field.
I’m in for ONE year to see if he’s right. What say you?

Your response is as milk toast and blaise as Richt’s. How you can take his admittance that he hasn’t been coaching and attempt to spin it into a positive is beyond me. I encourage you to look at the “body of work” and please do it objectively. Every year Richt remains coach is 3 years the program will lag behind the rest of the SEC. Interesting that you are hooking your wagon to Richt’s

CMR can still coach. I have been as big a critic about this football team as anybody. I think that the short comings still point to the fact that CMR needs to get a little tougher on his staff, his players and even himself. Show a little emotion and fire out there coach. Our on the field problems can be directly related to our off field problems as they clearly show, that we are not willing to get a bunch tougher. Do you think Caleb would still be playing for Saban now? I am sorry but a lesser recruit might be a lot better fit on the team, if he is more mature, better disciplined and responsible. King did not just turn into a problem overnight. CMR, saw the writing on the wall but let the problem build up, with his maybe too soft approach to disciplining kids. Players need to know it is an honor to be playing football or any sport at this level.
I do think he needs to get involved in the game planning more this year and hopefully, the AD has freed up his time a little more so he can do that. Maybe Bobo will be a fine OC someday, but now, he is a little over matched for the job. I for sure am no coach, but I could tell you 75% of the plays that were going to be called in a given situation in a lot of the games this year.
As for these kids needing to go to another school based on the record of the schools recruiting them; I say go right ahead if that is all you are looking for. Pride in your state, in yourself and the chance to turn things around do not enter into most of these kids minds. These kids leave high school all thinking they are going to be in the NFL after a couple of years of wasted college time to sharpen their skills. Good luck on that kids, but you might think about getting a little education if possible, because chances are you will need it.
If we are going to demand off field behavior that is above reproach, then, half of these kids we recruit will have to be held to a higher standard than they were held to prior to getting to UGA. Let’s be honest here, a lot of these kids may not have gotten the proper guidance up to this point in their lives, so if we are going to give them a chance at a good start in life, they need to know, right from the start, what is expected of them. It is and should always be an honor to wear the red and black and if they can not keep thier noses clean and have questionable pasts, we might be better off without them.
As for the defense; Yes I think we have the right coach in there. He might get a little over juiced on the sidelines every once in a while, but I much prefer that to standing there, frowning a little bit and then turning your back on the field. The officials aren’t the only ones needing to know about your displeasure. Maybe you do take care of some of these problem behind closed doors, but I am sure the fans would like to see you light a little fire under some of these players butts when they make stupid mistakes because their head is not in the game, or they haven’t learned how to play controlled enough. If they don’t learn that on the football team, they will not learn that in life either in most cases. The coaches are the mentors, the enforcers and the teachers. For some of these students, it may be the first time they have even expected to behave like young men, and responsible citizens. If they do not want to do that, they do not deserve to have the opportunity at such a fine school.

Savannah, I agree. I do not believe you can change the central temperament of the HC. He is who he is. A great person of integrity beyond a shadow of doubt and I believe that is extremely important. But, if someone loses “heart”…wow. A lot of good people who just aren’t qualified to be HC, AD, etc. Again, it’s a stressful thing to try to do a job you may not be qualified for. A typical case of reaching your level of incompetency.

bah bah bah bah, you have an athletic director still feeling his way around the store. You have a president that really doesn’t like football or fraternities, or anything non academic. The brutal truth is very much what Fran talks about on the sports talk show this morning. You have the jelly fish, the transplant and the baseball man trying to talk about subjects they do not have an acumen to talk about and Fran, who just about predicted all this, saying Richt has got to go. This may be the only man in Georgia that understands what is going on and has the guts to say it. Maybe we don’t pay these intellectually challenged radio people enough money or Georgia has them in their pocket, but while Georgia burns they fiddle along with the rest of the press, though the light is starting to turn on there. Tenn. will be pass Georgia next year and watch even Mississippi pick up the pace. If you want to see emotion in Richt stop paying him, the man is literally too fat and happy. Seriously let the check get lost in the mail or bounce and then you will see a man with his hair on fire. Or tell him every time a kid goes to jail after six months of you not knowing about it or drives with a expired drivers license your pay is docked, that weeks pay. Son,the state of Georgia would be a safer place to live in over night.

If Richt REALLY wants to get some passion and heart out of his team he should do the following.

On the first day of spring practice, take a copy of the depth chart and burn it in front of the team.

Then announce ALL positions are open and no one is getting a job based on tenure. If you’re a 5th year senior and a true freshman out plays you then you’ll find yourself on the bench period.

I bet you would see some players living up to potential, and some young stars emerge.

The fact remains that UGA had one of the most experienced – if not THE
MOST EXPERIENCED -Offensive Lines in the US this year, but run blocking and pass blocking were atrocious. UGA’s OL was defintely not up to par with what UGA used to have on a regular basis. I put blame for this squarely on the OL Line Coach. We could not “RAM THE BALL DOWN THE FIELD” on anyone this year.

Insofar as recruiting goes, I know Rodney Garner is the Recruiting Coordinator and I constantly read posts from fans wanting him gone. But does anyone really belive he gives a scholarship to a single kid without Mark Richt’s blessings? The entire coaching staff discusses prospects and who to offer. CMR is in charge of recruiting, Garner just gets paid for it and has a title.

CMR must require scholarships be given to “better” people, kids who do not get into trouble as often as UGA players do. And someone – hopefully he has that person in place now – must monitor the players’ activities on a regular basis. Then when one crosses the line – like I think the kid from Parkview (Caleb King) has – then kick him off the team like Florida did to Auburn’s $200,000 QB.

I say keep Mike Bobo another year to run the Offense, but immediately hire a new OL Coach (maybe after Feb 2nd). And when Alabama, Southern Cal, OK,Ohio State, and Florida offers someone, UGA should offer the same kid.

We are postponing the inevitable. McGarity will fire Richt (Fieldgoal Jesus) when his contract is up.
This is simply saving $ on his buy-out. Richt has too many flaws as a head coach to keep.
1-No special teams emphasis 2-1992 offense scheme 3-No disipline 3-Strenght and conditioning is weak 4- Poor blocking scheme (we can’t go for 4th and a foot) 5-Richt has no confidence in any part of the team play.
I wish Richt would do the right thing and resign. That would be a “real” show of character and passion.

irondawg

How was the blocking atroscious? What was wrong with their technique? What should they have done different? Too much weight on their hand? Was it a tech problem or scheme? How would you get the OL to be able to “ram it down the field”? Coaches just love to play the worst person. Sometimes you just cant make chicken salad of Chicken crap. By the way, Myer didn’t kick the qb off the team. Academic decision by the school. Richt does have the final voice on recruiting but he does listen to his coaches. Please give me examples of x and o Richt should have done different, please be specific. I love the burn the depth chart! I wish it was that easy
