McGarity: ‘We are working as hard as we can to turn this ship around’

Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity wants to see “improvement in all areas” from the football program this year. And he’d like the public to see more displays of coach Mark Richt’s passion for his job.

Those were among McGarity’s comments in a conference call that was held Thursday to answer reporters’ questions about the state of the Georgia football program, which last week lost to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl to finish with its first losing record (6-7) in 14 years.

McGarity previously had answered the biggest question, saying Richt would return as coach. Here are highlights of what McGarity had to say Thursday:

Q: What did you think of Richt’s end-of-season news conference on Wednesday?

A: I think he started to show the passion he has for the job. Mark is not the type who is going to get out of his skin, so to speak, as far as the way he handles himself. But I know in conversations we have had all through the season and especially in the last two or three days, his passion has really come through. . . . I think that’s something Mark needs to do more of –- show his passion and express it in ways that perhaps he hasn’t done before. I encourage him to do that. And I thought he addressed a number of issues and basically stated what he wanted to do moving forward.

Q: What are your expectations for the football team next fall?

A: Improvement. Improvement in all areas. We want to see improvement in discipline; we want to see improvement in leadership; we want a passionate team. We want every member of our staff, regardless of what sport it is, to be passionate about being here. We want individuals that are invested in our program, that want to do everything it takes to get us to the next level.. . . We are stressing two focal points as an association in 2011. One of those is to have a sense of urgency in everything we do. And [the other is to] have a very high level of accountability [with] every employee we have. . . .

Q: Would you ever establish an ultimatum – a certain number of wins – that Richt or any coach would need to reach [to keep his or her job]?

A: No, across the board. In our first meeting we had with all of our coaches [after McGarity's hire as AD] back in September, that was one point that was made very clear. All our coaches know what is expected of them; they are expected to compete for championships, to be in the hunt. So I’m not here to put a figure on number of wins and everything. We just want to see improvement. We want to see a program that is headed in the right direction, all our programs. That’s the goal. That’s what we’re doing. And if we see shortcomings in certain areas that are outside the lines, then that’s our responsibility to do everything we can to take care of those and address them so that our coaches can focus on coaching, recruiting and watching the student-athletes graduate.

Q: Richt mentioned you had helped relieve him of some administrative duties. . . .

A: Every person has strengths and weaknesses, and I thought one of Mark’s weaknesses was that he was trying to do so much himself. He was the point person on so many issues, whether they be academics, discipline, things of that nature, to where it was so time-consuming . . . [and] almost impossible to focus really on the X’s and O’s of the game in every phase of the game. So as you analyze things, you look, you listen, sometimes you wonder, ‘Why is our head coach the point person there?’ …

Q: Was there a tipping point during the season when you decided in your mind you were not going to make a coaching change?

A: Yeah, I think the Monday after the Colorado game was probably the most telling day. I think that’s when things really started to jell, so to speak, as far as [Richt and McGarity] getting to know each other better to where we did not feel maybe afraid to just be brutally honest with each other. . . . Basically from that point forward, everybody was really upset and we wanted to change things and Mark was very proactive there. And as we continued to improve, I think the stats will show that leading up to the UCF game we were scoring close to 40 points a game for seven games in a row. Things were on the upswing. I mean, we had a tough, tough loss to Florida, and we had a difficult loss to Auburn. There is no question the effort was there. I know people don’t like to hear about ‘we were close,’ but we were not out of those games until the end of the game. And we just basically couldn’t close those close games. . . . And then we go against a UCF team that I think unfortunately people don’t give enough credit. Coach [George] O’Leary has done a phenomenal job down there. . . They played a great game, maybe their best game of the year, and we did not. And at the end of the day you’re going to lose games like that. But I think the tipping point was maybe how we responded after being 1-4.

Q: What is your reading on the pulse of Bulldog Nation? And what has been your response to people you’ve heard from this week, particularly those calling for change right now?

A: It’s interesting. I don’t want to say it’s been 50-50, but it’s probably been pretty close to that as far as people supportive.  You’ve got a certain faction of fans out there that aren’t just disappointed; if they don’t have change, they’re going to drop out of the program. I understand the frustration. I think everyone here is frustrated. But everybody in this building and anybody who is on our staff, they’re working hard to turn this thing around. And I know we can do it. . . . I wish I could turn a light switch on and change it overnight, but people are going to have to make decisions on, ‘Do they want to hang in there with us, or do they choose to do otherwise?’ The way I look at it is that people who support our program, it’s really supporting our [whole] program. I know they’re frustrated with football right now, but what is so important is that their contributions go into funding every sport that we sponsor. So in essence if we have some that are pulling out of the program … they’re basically pulling out of making a contribution that helps us in every facet of our operation. But I do understand the frustration, and the only thing we can do is to say we are working as hard as we can to turn this ship around. And after we get it going, then I think you’ll see a lot different reaction.

Q: How would you characterize your discussions with Richt in the past few days? Have you learned anything about him you didn’t know beforehand?

A: Even though you know the right things are happening, even though you know he is working extremely hard to turn this thing around, I think everybody wants to hear, ‘Hey, I am passionate about this work; I am doing everything I can to turn this thing around.’ Bottom line is, I think the conversations we have had have been very reassuring that he has the ability [to] maybe go back to the way he might have been doing some things earlier in his career. He admitted he is really looking forward to studying the game. When you’re so concerned and so ingrained in all these other things that are outside the system, something has to lag behind; something basically has to be moved to the corner of the desk. I think what we’re seeing now is that we’re kind of clearing the deck so Mark can get back to doing the thing he really enjoys doing, and that’s doing what he talked about [Wednesday] as far as studying the game and getting back into all phases of the game. I think that’s the healthy part about it. I know he’s passionate about it. We’ve just got to get to where we are expressing that more frequently.

What concerns me is we were getting top 10 recruit classes and can’t finish in top 25. Underachieve. Don’t practice with pads, trouble makers, etc., no coaching up. I’d rather have all ex NFL coaches on the staff and sell it like it is the best learning experience for the NFL. All the 5 star players would want to come learn from the ex NFL coaches since that’s their goal “to get to the NFL”. The only one I see coaching up on this staff is TG right now. CMR should be promoted to do all the public speaking functions for the football team and oversee coaching staff. I like CMR as a person.

Miami of Ohio is in a bowl game and they have already fired their coach. UGA is draging their feet.

It is all Staffords fault. Fatt Matt should have stayed for his Sr. year. Fatt Matt probably would still have been #1 because Bradford went #1 and only played like 4 or 5 games his Sr. year. UGA would have been Killer last year and RICHT would not have been on the hot seat after this year if the COX season never happened.

The problem with picking a replacemnet coach is not many coaches with UGA ties want to come to UGA. UGA will have to do just like they did with richt. Find an up and comer that knows the SEC, but again NO COACH wants to come to UGA.
UGA is a career ender. Vince is the only resent UGA coach that got a job after UGA. He was the AD and was forced out. NO PROVEN COACH wants to come to UGA.

I give I got one coach Derek Dooley and that’s because of the ties with Daddy Dooley. @Jack you are sooo right about your comments. Adams does not care about winning, he’s only interested in who he can impress and move on. He’s too politically connected. He has single-handedly ruined the game day experience @ UGA with his rules and regs on tailgating. He has locked down every building so that the fans cannot enter them to use facilities.

@Still@ the bar – you must be. Spelling lesson, it is recent not resent. Also, what job did Dooley get after UGA? He was the head coach and AD at the same time. He stepped down as coach but retained the AD job.

All programs go through adversity…Alabama, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Southern Cal, Texas, Florida, Miami and we could go on…Tennessee is a prime example…who would have ever thought 3 coaches in 3 years??? Give Coach Richt an opportunity with this one year guarantee and support the Dawgs! If I’m a recruit reading this stuff I’m more concerned about the crazy hate coming from the fanbase than anything else that relates to UGA.

Gatormeat,

Florida was a Championship caliber team this year? Granted you beat Georgia but face it,
FLORIDA was NOT close to championship caliber. Carolina drilled you at Home. Losses to FSU and KSU and just about anybody with an SU in their name. 8-5 does not say Championship.

And Florida Character…lets see. Stolen laptops, stealing dead peoples credit cards, DUIs and Speeding tickets, stalking charges…..oh yeah true character players there.
The only thing Crowell will be certain of at Florida is getting handed the required pair of Jhorts.

Richt would be owed so much money in a buyout that his record (and the money) dictates that he gets one last opportunity to turn things around. McGarity is UGA through and through (so was Damon Evans, of course) and he will give it everything he has to get UGA football where it needs to be. He’s also absolutely right about people threatening to pull their money from the athletics program. If you’re a UGA alum and care about UGA athletics, football ain’t the only sport in town. That’s not to say you shouldn’t make your voice heard, but I’d think twice about defunding the damn program. Let’s make things better, not worse.

The more I hear Mr. McGarity speak the more impressed I ahve become with the man. I think that ussually if you look hard enough there is a silver lining to most situations. The embarassment to the program with our previous AD had to exist in order for the program to move forwar…which it has-in Mr. McGarity. I am not saying we will win the SEC in football next year. However, I do feel much more comfortable with our leadership. Great hire President Adams as great things are in the wings at UGA.

iI told you guys that evans was iqnorant.in 2007 we played lsu away ,fla in jax(away) kentucky away , and auburn away, all in a row. 4 road games in a row with no open date,so we could fly across the country to play arizona state to improve our brand. we are not fubu or a ge washing machine. we play 8 games in the state of ga this year because our new ad has a brain larger than a butter bean.He is cleaning up damon evans’ mess. Road games at oregon and louisville gone.Evans was as qualified then as obama is now to run that program .That is he was not at all qualified or maybe he failed logistics or geography class.yes we can hope and change .

Earlier someone asked who will we get to replace CMR if he can’t turn things around. My answer is the best coach money will buy . I think everybody see’s how successful Saban has been and I think UGA will match the 6 million that Alabama is paying Saban and be more than glad to pay a top head coach 6 million to get him to come to UGA. That’s why recruit’s should not worry about CMR maybe getting replaced. Either CMR will be here after next year with an extension or UGA will have a six million coach. Either way they can’t lose.

The best thing that happened to UGA in 2010 was the hiring of Greg McGarity.

As many others I have seen the football program decline for 4 years (interestingly coinciding with the hire of D Evans…wouldn’t have been a politically correct statement). Willing to give CMR 2011 to turn it around until this bowl game which was the most pathetic and uninspired game I have seen Georgia play in years. After that game I didn’t care if we blew up the whole program and started over. Still not convinced he can recapture the lightning.

I am convinced AD GM has his finger on the pulse and that he will make the right decision at the right time. At least allow him to go through a full year before placing any of this blame on him. While our program was declining here, he was winning championships at UF. He is an Athens and Georgia boy….let’s allow him the time to make us and himself proud of that fact. He is the real deal and he will get it done.

This is the “DREAM TEAM.” Working hard is not good enough. We are not getting the job done in any area of the football program, especially SUSPENSIONS / ARRESTS. What about Christian LeMay, for example ? 9-4 for 2011 will make us # 32 in the nation at 9-4. 9-4 in 2010 is # 32. 9-4 in 2009 is # 32. Surely, we are more than # 32, Greg McGarity.

The issue I see is that Georgia is the equivalent of a badly run business losing market share. Fans see it, the media sees it, the recruits see it. We must put a better product on the field, now. Intangibles like “we’re working harder” or “we’re letting our coach refocus on the game” does not translate into a turn around of the trend.

McGarity needs to study the first few months of Joel Eaves tenure as UGA Athletic Director. He needs to read where the brand new AD tapped a coach who was mostly unknown to all but Eaves; a coach with leadership skills and the ability to surround himself with good assistants. 2 years later Georgia was a respected program and 25 years later we had a legendary program.

Tangible, bold change will get a recruit’s attention. The downward trend is not reverseable without bold change.

Sorry Stinger 2…I just can’t subscribe to your school of thought. But that’s what makes us all different.

Those 50% quoted as not being supportive of the Dawgs aren’t disloyal fans, and shouldn’t go away to support another team of their choice. We are true fans who just don’t blindly support the lunacy going on in Athens. True fans want what’s best for the organization, and the lack of substantive change is certainly not best for UGA. To say we are not loyal is cowardice and the easy way out.

Face it- we have a substandard coaching staff, starting from Mark Richt on down. Substandard recruiting gets UGA players who can’t or won’t do what it takes to deliver excellence- that goes for academic, disciplinary, and athletic performance. This isn’t rocket science. These boys need to simply go to class, do their homework, pass tests, ask for academic help if they’re having difficulty, being in the dorm/apartment by curfew, don’t get drunk, drive foolishly, don’t abuse women, and show up on Saturdays and play your heart out. Like it or not, let’s face it- they are all employees of UGA. If I performed that poorly at my job, I would be fired, plain and simple.

The lack of effort and commitment by so many of them (staff and players alike) over the past several years speaks volumes about the leadership. Richt & Co. must go, and any players who have also not earned the right to be there should also be kicked to the curb. I understand the dilemma of McGarity in his first year not wanting to fire Richt. However, that’s exactly what these big boys are paid big money to do- make hard choices and deliver the best product they are being paid obscene amounts of money to do.

The sad state of football at UGA is sickening. And as a 35 year fan and dual degree holder, I AM a loyal fan. And I want better for my Alma Mater. But I know in my heart that we won’t get it with the current regime. Sadly, we will be having this same debate in November. They are laughing all the way to the bank- thug players and incompetent coaches.

Vegas will open a line soon on Richt making it past 2011. Every sports writer, show etc in the country has talked about the trouble in Athens. I’m telling myself that their plan to attract a top rated experienced proven head coach is that unlike Michigan, who fired Rodriguez after 3 years, we don’t knee jerk in Athens, And that you won’t get fired here after 2 years. I don’t know what they think about Dooley after one year in Knoxville, but getting that team to a bowl, almost beating LSU at LSU ( should of) with what he had to work with was very impressive. If they give him a chance, I think he’ll do great. He”’ probably get it restored and get fired year four and someone will walk in and win and take all the glory. Anyway, there will be a new man in Athens in 2012. I base that on we just don’t have the horses in place to win 8,9 ,10 games, especially with this coaching.

[...] know if Greg McGarity has all the answers on the football front, but I can appreciate that at least he appears to be sensitive to the concerns of the fan [...]

“We are working as hard as we can to turn this ship around.” says it all. We’re headed South when we should be steaming full ahead due North.

You can’t get any more off course than 180 degrees.

What in the wide world of sports can CMR do with one more time at bat besides foul things up even more than he already has?

I guess UGA can pack the schedule with as many patsies as the SEC allows and hope they can beat ‘em.

Answer man.

Every time I turn on Sports Center it’s all Auburn. I don’t see anything about UGA or UAT of UF or any of the other “elite” teams in the SEC. It’s all Auburn all the time. Cam this, Cam that. Gene Chizik, Gus Malzahn, Ted Roof, Auburn, Auburn, Auburn. It’s Mike Dyer, Onterrio McCalebb, even Bo Jackson on TV all talking about Auburn. Rece Davis, Herbie, Mayday and the whole ESPN crowd are all talking about Auburn. I’ve seen Cam make spectacular play after spectacular play over and over again…and It’s Great To Be An Auburn Tiger! I am LOVIN’ this. War Eagle!!!

McGarity was a great hire. So was Richt. If Michael Adams continues to stay out of all this, we’ll be OK.

That is the key to get Adams to stay out of it. Swampdawg I agree…my tickets will certainly improve.

If they were really dedicated to getting the ship turned around, Richt would be gone.

Someone made comment that CMR is staying until Feb to help recruiting–I think it is hurting and Where would he go…

swampdawg……….That’s wishful thinking…. no way to hire a “good” new HC in February or keep a already hired one secret.

I continue to be baffled by the staunch support for CMR.

To state to obvious, this ain’t the NFL. The worst teams don’t get to pick the top incoming talent. Quite the contrary in college football; the best teams reload with blue-chip prospects and the second tier programs (like UGA) vie for the second tier talent.

A mediocre program stays mediocre until it demonstrates to the blue chip kids (and the top coaching candidates) that it’s got a clue.

You CMR advocates, I ask you. How does keeping Richt one more year demonstrate that UGA gets it?

McGarity….Richt isn’t the biggest yoke around your neck. That belongs the Michael Adams, and he is bought and paid for by Donald Leebern. So whatever you do be careful, yet creative, while dealing with these 2.

Answer man, I will thank you for mentioning us in your lead off about UGA being an elite SEC team. I wish I could accept the compliment…..

Improvement is my eyes is winning more games and being a factor in the SEC title picture. CMR is 2-8 against Florida and has had a huge number of players being on the wrong side of the law. I think that maybe that CMR gets one more season to right the ship.
