Georgia distributed plaques to its senior football players at its annual awards gala last month with 7-6 inscribed as the team’s record, even though the Bulldogs were 6-6 at the time.
Central Florida heard about that and naturally took umbrage, considering it a sign that Georgia was taking the Knights lightly and presuming a Liberty Bowl victory.
Not so, according to Georgia, which says it routinely includes a bowl victory in the record on the senior plaques and then makes a revision in the event of a loss.
“Did not have anything to do with taking UCF lightly,” Georgia associate athletic director Claude Felton said in an e-mail today. “Every year we present the senior plaques at our football Gala, which is always held before the bowl game. One line on the plate is the season record, and we always list it with a win in the upcoming bowl game.
“If we lose the game, we replace the plate. We’ve done that 14 straight years and only had to replace the plate three times.”
Central Florida, of course, beat Georgia 10-6 in the Liberty Bowl — Georgia’s first loss in its past five bowl appearances and third in its past 14, dating to 1997. So Georgia’s 23 seniors will be getting new plates bearing the 2010 team’s accurate record: 6-7.
Estimated cost of the revision is $200.

Maybe the 7 of the 7 and 6 was for the average of 7 chop blocks per game and the 6 was for 6 personal fouls per game that the Thugs averaged.

Has the Georgia Athletic Department already engraved the number of arrests on the Fulmer Cup trophy, or have they left a spot to be filled in later?

The reason UGA can distribute plaques to players and then spend the money to change the plate is because they ARE NOT USING THEIR MONEY to pay for it. What we have is a bunch of fat cats living off tax payers (us) money.
If they had to use “their” money, common sense would prevail.

Yes, this is for the most part a “non-story”.
However, it’s sad to see the state of UGA Football, once a national powerhouse, now awarding plaques for a losing season.
When did our “Football Factory” become junior league girl’s soccer where they don’t keep score and “everybody is a winner”?
As a ‘81 UGA grad and privied to go during the height of Bulldog football, this is just pathetic.

Boys, you sure have disrespected my program. You may not think much of us but we are the best program in the state of Florida. Keep on thinking your opponents are not much and you will have more Liberty Bowls. Remember these numbers: 18 of 21 and 10 – 6. ‘Nuff said.

That’s a shame. First this program needs to have more wins than arrest. Get some discipline on this team. Get players that wanna REALLY play for UGA, players that have the fundamentals on tackeling, blocking, motivated and have heart. Bo Bo has had his chance time for him to go. Grantham, willing to give him time to get players to run his scheme. Head coach MR, win 10 or more games, beat Fl and win a BCS bowl game to save his job. The current state of this football program is a disgrace to Georgia.

The University of Georgia football opperations should be ashamed of themselves and Mark Richt needs to look at himself in the mirror and say whooooa nellly! Am I out of my mind? I truely believe this shows how unattached he is to all that is going on around him. By damnit if he doesn’t start getting his crap together, how does anyone think the football team will?????????????

Oh, and by the way. All this talk of firing this assistant or that assistant coach is a bunch of whoodo, you folks obviously don’t know crap about coaching or leadership. It ALL starts from the top. It is totally Mark Richts job to see to it that his coaches are coaching. I think CMR is trying to do too much on field coaching himself. It does not seem to me that he knows how to coach his coaches. I think he can coach players just fine. But he has got to realize that he needs to be coaching his coaches and they better transfer to the players his message or they will be gone. That ain’t gonna happen because the consiquences for screwing up are not severe enough.

I’m a UCF grad and fan living in Atlanta, and this is the first I’m hearing of this so I for one am glad the AJC reported it. It is certainly compelling to our team, the ever-underdogs, to hear that our opponent assumes a bowl win before they even play. I don’t understand why this is “policy” in the first place…. other than whoever orders the plaques is indeed assuming a bowl win. It is poor sportsmanship on the school’s part, not the players. At any rate, I’m glad UCF was able to show everyone that C-USA is able to compete with everyone else.

Funny how some pick on the Ohio State guy with “SEC wins” in bowl games against Ohio St. Leave the SEC out of this! God knows if UGA had played Ohio St 10 times in bowl games over the last 10 years, UGA would be hard pressed to have .500 record. Year after year Georgia fans ride the coattails and accomplishments of the national caliber teams in the SEC to make themselves feel better. Stop living vicariously through AL, AU, UF and LSU and do something about your 3rd tier football program.

Every day you goober Tech fans come on here and feel the need to berate UGA fans? Why? Because you have mommy issues? By the way, UGA has fallen on hard times, but in the last decade they haven’t done all that shabby, and did finish in the top 5 more than once. Jerk.
