Georgia distributed plaques to its senior football players at its annual awards gala last month with 7-6 inscribed as the team’s record, even though the Bulldogs were 6-6 at the time.
Central Florida heard about that and naturally took umbrage, considering it a sign that Georgia was taking the Knights lightly and presuming a Liberty Bowl victory.
Not so, according to Georgia, which says it routinely includes a bowl victory in the record on the senior plaques and then makes a revision in the event of a loss.
“Did not have anything to do with taking UCF lightly,” Georgia associate athletic director Claude Felton said in an e-mail today. “Every year we present the senior plaques at our football Gala, which is always held before the bowl game. One line on the plate is the season record, and we always list it with a win in the upcoming bowl game.
“If we lose the game, we replace the plate. We’ve done that 14 straight years and only had to replace the plate three times.”
Central Florida, of course, beat Georgia 10-6 in the Liberty Bowl — Georgia’s first loss in its past five bowl appearances and third in its past 14, dating to 1997. So Georgia’s 23 seniors will be getting new plates bearing the 2010 team’s accurate record: 6-7.
Estimated cost of the revision is $200.

Thank you CMR and staff and a tip of the hat to the 2010 Fulmer Cup Award winners.

They are ok with that, as long as they still rule the state. The state with two 6-7 teams. Why am I reminded of “King Nothing” by Metallica.

There was no interest in this game from the ‘get go’. Georgia should have politely stepped back from the bowl process acknowleging that a .500 team was not a UGA level team and did not warrant a bowl game.
Realize that one of the reason that the bowl was taken was for the additional opportuntiy to practice and evaluate players coming back, etc. In this case, the QB coming in from N.C. was able to start practicing; but the honorable thing to do would have been to decline.
UGA was disinterested and the play calling unimaginative. Bowls should be fun and creative; especially when they mean absolutely ‘nothing’. Get kids on the field that haven’t seen the field. Try different looks, trick plays – make it creative. And tell everyone up front your going to do it – win/lose or draw. Bobby Bowden built an entire program from scratch with this philosophy.

A psychiatrist could have a lot of fun with these UGA fans. What a lack of self esteem! (and deservedly so.) Their only answer to the many.many things wrong with their university is to bad-mouth GT athletics, which obviously has the fan-base/financial deck stacked against it. I guess they don’t have a clue that constantly putting someone else down does nothing to elevate themselves. And I doubt they will even have an inkling what I’m pointing out.

What’s the big deal? We always talk about our record as Losses and Wins. So, the plaques are correct: 7 Losses, 6 Wins.
With that settled, does anyone have any dirt on Jimbo Fisher? I need a gig after this one ends next year and it might as well be FSU.

Totally agree with our comment on this page. Quite frankly it took too long for anyone to critcize this program, and another part of your program is that CMR cannot fire Mike Bobo, because of his close ties with the Dooley’s.

Look, the bottom line is I wish UGA could win 10 national titles and give this state some decent respect, but quality football programs begin with the AD, and your previous AD’s were too busy either growing their gardens or drunk and chasing hookers. Clean house, top down, and Michael Adams has nothing to do with the football program that sucks.

Sounds like a bunch of immature kids. When my son played little league ball the coach and some parents voted to give them tropheys. Even though they had only won 1 game. I thought it set a bad example. But they gave em out anyway. And UGA fans laughed at Tech for giving rings because they had beaten Ga. for the 1st time in 10 years. Who’s laughing NOW?

There’s much more involved as to Georgia’s “respect” than a game played by a bunch of illiterate criminals. Come on,folks ,look at the big picture here! But if you don’t have any knowledge of science, philosophy, literature, history, economics, etc. I suppose you’re stuck with getting your jollies from a game played by juvenile delinquents. And you’ll probably refer to the players as “heroes,” a true insult to real heroes who daily risk their lives for us!

Tech and UGA fans- 6 wins 7 losses each. That sucks, pure and simple. Both sides need to disappear until it gets better. I sure miss old BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. You shouldn’t get a plaque at all for a 6-7 season. No, wait, isn’t that what they do in Little League Baseball and Pee Wee Football for the kids? That way, no one feels bad becauseuse, as long as everyone has fun, it doesn’t matter whether you win or lose. Doesn’t look like much changes when you get to be a big boy and play for UGA.

What a joke we have become. For anyone in the UGA AD to allow this to happen in a joke. Give them the darn plaques AFTER they have finished the season. MAYBE it will serve as a motivating factor since we could ever FINISH A DRILL anymore. Richt has become a complete pushover.

I graduated in physics from the University of California at Berkeley 1961. We did not receive the diplomas at the graduation ceremony because too many students flunked out the last semester.
Since these diplomas had to be printed on special paper with special print, the preparation cost for them was high. They did not want to waste money destroying diplomas which were not used and also did not want to give out diplomas to anyone who had not earned them. They won few football games because, unlike UGA, none of the professors in the various departments would lower standards for football players.
What is needed at UGA, is for the legislature to force this professional football entertainment business off the campus forever. What do they want to be on campus for anyway? They could begin by charging them rent of about $ 1 million per month for use of state owned facilities on campus. This might get their attention. Double the rent every year until they get out. Is there some shortage of football entertainment or something? Why it shouldn’t even be called sports anyway. Look at how they paid Idaho to travel across the country to lose to them.
Isn’t there something illegal or at least very wrong with all this nonsense? What does football entertainment have to do with “higher education” anyway? There are thousands of other human activities more significant and important than football entertainment.

Wow. That’s more than a little arrogant on UGA’s part to ASSUME they’re going to win the bowl just because they’ve only lost 3 times (now 4) in the past 14 years. Why not wait until AFTER the bowl game to present the senior plaques and get it right the first time? It’s not that hard, and I’m sure you can work something out with those seniors who graduate in December. It also saves the money of the reprinting/re-engraving when they have to replace it, and what are they supposed to do with the old, incorrect ones? It’s wasteful..

The Athletic department at Georgia also gave embroidered red panties with 7 and 6 on them at the banquet. The team wore them during the game and after they lost they took them off and put them on backwards so that the 6 and 7 record could be worn with pride.
