Georgia distributed plaques to its senior football players at its annual awards gala last month with 7-6 inscribed as the team’s record, even though the Bulldogs were 6-6 at the time.
Central Florida heard about that and naturally took umbrage, considering it a sign that Georgia was taking the Knights lightly and presuming a Liberty Bowl victory.
Not so, according to Georgia, which says it routinely includes a bowl victory in the record on the senior plaques and then makes a revision in the event of a loss.
“Did not have anything to do with taking UCF lightly,” Georgia associate athletic director Claude Felton said in an e-mail today. “Every year we present the senior plaques at our football Gala, which is always held before the bowl game. One line on the plate is the season record, and we always list it with a win in the upcoming bowl game.
“If we lose the game, we replace the plate. We’ve done that 14 straight years and only had to replace the plate three times.”
Central Florida, of course, beat Georgia 10-6 in the Liberty Bowl — Georgia’s first loss in its past five bowl appearances and third in its past 14, dating to 1997. So Georgia’s 23 seniors will be getting new plates bearing the 2010 team’s accurate record: 6-7.
Estimated cost of the revision is $200.

The fact is that Georgia’s players took their opponent lightly and didn’t play hard.
The plate is symbolic of that and therefore takes on greater significance than it otherwise might have.

Arrogance, plain and simple and the reason this program receives no respect. The abundance of arrogance and stupidity is the reason this program is in the sh##tter. Keep up the great work!

All you crybabies deserves the two idiots Schultz and Bradley. Did anyone stop to look and see what Auburn’s conference record was last year? 3-5 in SEC play. This year they are playing for the national championship. I just hope all you whiners remember all this stupidity flowing through your keyboards next season when UGA is kicking butt and taking names.

I hope one of CMR’s changes will be to never give any AJC reporter any news. I would bann them from pressconfrences and practices. One of the biggest problems with recruiting is the negative press that our home state paper continues to spew and twist for blog hits. I would really welcome a new way of handling AJC press.

As a GT fan I am surprised that this made front page headlines on the AJC online edition if the explaination given by the Atheletic Department is true. However, the practice of assuming a bowl win does seem highly presumtious (sp) especially after a 6-6 season.

Michigan has the guts to fire who they need to fire, unfortunately, UGA has no clue how to run a championship program. UGA has Dooley’s head so far up their boosters a#$ they cannot see daylight.
This entire season has been a total slap in the face starting with a losing records, loss to UCF, then Muschamp and other UGA staffers going to your worst nightmare….Florida. Nothing better than watching a former UGA player thump on his former team….Yeal Baby!!!

Defensive coordinators make or break head coaches, but apparently UGA did not give enough value to Van Gorder who is now enjoying his success with the Falcons.
Everyone in Athens is in love with Dooley and CMR, thus there will never be any change until this house is cleaned and sanitized.

This is exactly what is wrong with Richt, this man has absolutely no control over his program even something as simple as Seniors plaques. After you get guys to give you 4 yrs out of their lives, the coach should always make sure anything involving seniors is taken care of. I know everyone loves his christian attitude, but even at church they they manage to get awards & plaques correct at their functions!

As a man of faith, I must say this, growing up in a family that revolved around our faith it is clear that order must maintained in one’s home. It is very clear that Mark Richt is considered the head of this program, but this man is not providing the leadership & guidance that trickles down from top to bottom in a family. If UGA’s football program was an actual family it would be totally dysfunctional.

BEWARE – If anyone tries to sell an AJ Green plaque on E-Bay it will be a forgery. The plaques were given to the UGA SRs.
Claude Felton claims that putting the record with a bowl win and changing later as necessary is the standard practice at UGA. I can’t remember anything like this after the loss to WV but that was quite a while ago and before the “blogosphere” really took off.
