A roundup of the AJC’s coverage of Georgia’s loss to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl:
My game story on another sobering loss in a lost season:
MEMPHIS — Georgia’s football season ended as it began. Badly. Very badly.
The Bulldogs, who started the season by losing four of their first five games, lost their finale here Friday, falling to Central Florida 10-6 in the Liberty Bowl.
The loss — to a Conference USA team that had never before won a bowl game — dropped Georgia’s record to 6-7, giving the Bulldogs their first losing season in 14 years and punctuating a dismal year on and off the field for the UGA program.
“It’s embarrassing to be part of a losing season. It absolutely is,” said kicker Blair Walsh, whose two field goals accounted for all the points the Bulldogs could muster against Central Florida.
Jeff Schultz’s column, which asks if Georgia’s coach can fix his broken program:
MEMPHIS – Mark Richt says he is disappointed. He says he has to make changes. He says the Georgia football program is not where it needs to be, and when a once-respectable SEC program ends its season by failing to score a touchdown against a team from Conference USA, nobody is going to dispute that.
Here’s the only matter up for debate: Does anybody believe Mark Richt can still get it done?
My notebook, including items on Aaron Murray’s gloves, Richt’s decision to settle for a field goal on 4th-and-1 from the UCF 3-yard line and this:
Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green, widely expected to enter the 2011 NFL draft, wasn’t ready to declare his intentions after the Liberty Bowl.
“Not right now because I’m not clear-minded,” he said. “I’m just going to give it a couple of days, let it pass through, and go from there.”
And a photo gallery from the game, including this shot of the post-game handshake between Richt and UCF coach (and former Georgia Tech coach) George O’Leary:

UCF beat
South Dakota 4-7
Buffalo 2-10
UAB 4-8

East Carolina 6-6
Houston 5-7
Tulane 4-8
Memphis 1-11
So Methodist 7-6
LOST
Southern Miss 8-4
Kansas St 7-5
North Carolina St 8-4
They beat 8 teams with losing records, 1 team with a .500 record and 1 team with a winning record.
They lost to 3 teams with winning records.
Well they are better that the Mighty UGA of the SEC because the dawgs didn’t beat a single team with a winning record.
LOOK at UCF played and please tell they should have been on the same field with the TALENT UGA has.

Stinger2 I guess NCSU of the ACC is better than UGA too. So far all the SEC teams that have played the ACC teams have lost and by dawg Logic since NCSU beat CFU who beat UGA then NCSU and the ACC own the SEC. Well Syracuse beat KSU so Syracuse the the real Conference USA Champs too right? That is what the dawgs said when they beat Tech and Tech was the ACC Champs.

First, UGAG didn’t belong in a bowl game. If Kentucky had done their job, UGAG would have been sitting at home.
Second, the outcome and the tenor of the game bears out the first point.
Third, it was a tough game to watch as the outcome seemed to be more of a “roll of the dice” than about technique (another Tech reference) and talent. Good outcome though.
Fourth, I’m looking forward to the absolute rape which will occur in Boise State’s FIRST game next year. UGAG will be 0-1 and in my book, that is where I hope they will always be.

That staff is overpaid a clueless…..This Central Florida team won 1 game with teams with winning records. I don’t think anyone understands how getting manhandled by this team should be causing meetings this weekend. At the least, McGarity ought to have Richt Fire Bobo and hire Ralph frigen (sp) now as OC. Searles needs to go also. The line play was HORRIBLE. Anyteam team can get 5-7 yards up the middle on us ANYTIME. We are pretty bad.

Oh yeah, and it hurt to have 3 players sitting out for academic reasons. Bulldog fans whined about Caleb King not showing up for court and he had to sit out. Now he didn’t show up for what, 3 “academic appointments” and had to sit out. Other players couldn’t even muster 6 academic credits so they had to sit out. Blame the coach all you want but these players are a bunch of spoiled brats who take no responsibility for themselves. Mark Richt would probably love to go to a school where the players actually took their education seriously.

Maybe UGA should hire a babysitter for each player to make sure he goes to class and does his homework so he can earn more than 6 hours, goes to court if required, doesn’t drink too much, doesn’t sell his jersey, doesn’t get into a fight, and generally grows up. That would be money well spent.

To run it’s offense Florida hired a guy named “Wise”, Uga is run by a “Bobo”! I love Richt, but his ship may have sailed. It’s the unfortunate nature of fans today and what most of them complain about in college sports that really drives the game…MONEY! “Blame the coach all you want but these players are a bunch of spoiled brats who take no responsibility for themselves.”
cg I tend to agree with you with the exception of not blaming the coach. The coach must be blamed. He is in charge. He recruits the “spoiled brats”. He allows the “spoiled brats” to remain in the starting lineup or on the team.
And now the coach is bringing in another “spoiled brat” to play QB.
We all know there are a lot of quality students on the UGA football team. We all know that there are “spoiled brats” on the UGA football team.
What was the number of arrests in 2010, twenty one? Is that correct?
How many are still on the team? All but one? Is that correct? (Someone correct my numbers if I am wrong.)
But correct numbers aside, the point is off the field problems apparently result in no lessons learned. Sitting a guy for a game who does not give a damn accomplishes little.
Richt is still one of the best minds in football. He did not suddenly get dumb. But I think he did lose the edge that UGA has had since Dooley’s first year. Richt is more in the role of Bobby Bowden’s “let it go, it will get better”. He needs more of Dooley’s “Bloody Tuesday” practice sessions.
And UGA has let what’s important get away. UGA is 3 – 18 against Florida. Florida is a conference game. Three wins against eighteen losses is inexcusable against a conference opponent. When you are in a conference all that matters is the conference games. The GT, Colorado and next years Boise game game do not matter. The conference games matter. Beating GT and Colorado will not get you in the Dome for the SEC championship game. Running the table against the conference opponents will get you in that game.
My two cents.

AS I told my wife in the closing two minutes of the game, “This team’s character will show,” and it certainly did — as I expected. These games were lost back in the summer of 2010 when players showed they had more important things to do than get their mind set on a football season. Other schools’ players were working harder than were the Georgia Bulldogs and it showed on the field. I may be pushing 60 years of age, but some things about the game have never changed and the commitment level to become a team is one of those things. This team had no character — at least no good character. It falls to the coaches and the trickle down to senior leadership. One of your readers has asked the question of Mark Richt’s statements which went something like this: “there are reasons for why we finished as we did, and we’re going to correct them.” “What were the reasons and how are you going to correct them?” Those answers I’d like to know.

We had a Georgia player over on Christmas Eve, and upperclassman. I asked him about Central Florida. He said that they had watched film and that they were not very good. He said we would destroy them. After he left, I told my wife that we would lose. I think Coach Richt has lost the ability to put the fire in the belly of these kids to win. If I am correct, we didn’t even use our allotment of 15 practices. Apparently, we didn’t need to. We saw nothing new on offense last night at all, after a month of preparation. Coach didn’t even have a plan to deal with the extra 35 minutes before kickoff, though we have started slow and lost games because of it all year. (According to what he told Chuck Dowdle). I just think that he has lost the desire to put all his energy into it.
I don’t blame him. College football coaching demands every minute. It takes away from your family and having a regular life. That is the reason you get $3 million a year. But I do blame him if he won’t do the job and still takes the $3 million.
Central Florida called it their Super Bowl. Our kids thought we would win easily because we were in the SEC, despite our 6-6 record. Who outcoached who?

The problem is UGA does not KNOW how to win. Look at Bama and UF, two programs that only settle for the best. Until UGA can start thinking in this mode its just going to be same old, same old. Richt is BURNED OUT, he is more concerned about his assistant coaches ( Martinez & Bobo) than putting winning first. I have heard about how unfair it is to coach at places like Valdosta, Buford, Camden County because they only care about winning, but is that not what you play for and winning it all should be the ultimate goal.

What do you folks expect? You have been slobbering all over da Preacha Man Markt Wrecked ever since he pulled into town on the Marlboro Horse. Great logo, that Richt! Oh, doesn’t he represent UGA well?!? Well, he was a faker, a total imposter from day one. You were so in love with the football CEO that you didn’t mind paying him and his Water Girrrl about $30 million over the past ten years when all the perks are calculated in. What did you get? He looked good while he ran Donnan’s gas tank dry. Hired on all his incompetent buddies. Look in the mirror. When intelligent and caring alumni wanted him replaced, all everyone heard about was a bunch of drivel about what a nice man he is, a Christian man! Now Richt and the Water Girrrrl have so much money they couldn’t care less. They have a full time accountant just looking over their estate for them. It will take years to rebuild the UGA football program, and in this day and age it remains to be seen if the idioitic UGA administration has the brains or desire to do this.
Let’s say Richt fires Bobo, Searles, maybe Garner tomorrow. What quality coach in his right mind would sign on to a coaching staff with Richt in the Captain’s chair? Answer: Nobody, except second rate types looking for a way to meet a mortgage. Word has been out for some time in the coaching community about Richt. Actually, he was known to be what he was before we ever hired him. Why else do you think he spent 15 years on the FSU staff. Tallahassee is not that fun of a place to live, folks.
The big bucks will dry up fast now that the balance on Richt has shifted. We will go one of two ways: We will either hire some flash in the pan assistant with UGA football mafia ties like Smart, or we will have the best in the business hire the best PROVEN HEAD COACH in the country come to Athens from a wheelbarrow full of UGA money and give him a blank check with which to hire a staff. If we take route number one, be prepared to watch a continuation of the status quo. If a miracle happens and we see option number two, then we will win a NC within three years and the revenues generated from success will dwarf the salaries we paid for some real quality coaches who know how to recruit and train and plan for a gaime and motivate and discipline players.
Folks, you are in charge. What are you going to do?

I’ve been a UGA season ticket holder for 35 years and have seen a lot of good and bad games, players and coaches….Last nights game reminds me of Donnan’s homecoming loss to Vanderbilt…the team quit on the coach….because the coach didn’t believe in the team….Proof? On 4th and 1 after a 95+- yard drive in the 1st quarter against a team UGA should manhandle, Richt threw in the towel and kicked a field goal……That set the tone for the game………which was the whole season wrapped in one game……….bad blocking, bad tackling, bad play calling, bad coaching…After all that, 6 points for UGA was about right…The talent is there, they just are not well coached…..and lastly, anyone who thinks Todd Grantham will EVER put a real defense on the field of Sanford Stadium is either a lunatic or a crack head or Coach Mark Richt.

You people are so simple minded you have only one solution — fire the coach. If these players get to this level and aren’t self motiviated then they don’t deserve to play on this level. I”m sure they weren’t recruited with the idea that they would have to be followed 24/7 to be sure they are meeting their off-field obligations, and that they would have a fire lit under them to play their best in a bowl game…or any game. These posts don’t say much for your UGA education, if you even got one.

I think he needs to step down. We need a fresh start with someone that has some emotion. He looks depressed on the sidelines. UF got our coach and imagine what he will do with all of that talent.

If Fla hires Weiss to run the pro style offense and recruit drop back passers and elite WR’s like he did at Notre Dame, Fla may continue to dominate SEC East for years. We all know the Defense will be good with Muschamp throwing his nose in their regardless who the D coordinator is. Florida is also close to hiring former Miami WR’s/Recruiting coordinator Aubrey Hill. Fla appears to be building a new machine that excellent recruiters. Not a FLA fan here, but UGA beter make changes because everyone else is, at least the teams that need to that is

Change must come on the offense side!!!! I am tired of seeing the same plays week in and week out. NO MORE SCREEN PASSESS!!!!!!!!!!! Bobo can not make in game adjustments. 6 points and no touchdowns against a CUSA team. WOW…. As a long time season ticket holder (since the late 50’s) I am at a loss for what is going on in Athens. No more tailgating (thanks Adams) losing games= noon kickoffs thus no fun in Athens – just ask the local businesses how they did on football Saturdays. This is an absolute train wreck and with the hartman fund due in 6 weeks it will be very interesting to see the results. If you all remember before the 2008 season and theh #1 ranking (which was a joke in retrospect) it cost $10k just for the priviledge of purchasing tickets. The 2010 entry point was just over $2k. What do you think the entry point will be this year?? I bet $0… When I started getting season tickets they couldn’t sell out the games – I bet that happens again this year and if so it is bye bye Richt. Adams can go as well. McGarrity good luck with this train wreck. With next years schedule anything less than 10-2 is unacceptable. To me 8-5 is no improvement because there is no reason to be 6-7. PATHETIC and players you are to blame as well.. how does it feel to be 8-5 and 6-7. I am on the fence for getting tickets next year as it has become a pain in the a$$ to go to the games and watch us lose and be home by 6 on Saturday. I would rather watch the games on TV. No, the AJC isn’t a pot stirring piece of tabloid garbage at all. Naaaah.
LMAO.
That said, enough is enough. Richt should be fired immediately. It was a nice run and we should all wish him the best, but he can no longer get it done in the SEC. He should take over an ACC program where the competion isn’t as stiff and the expectations aren’t so high. I’m dead serious. I think he would be a good fit in the ACC. He would do well.

First we throw Bobo under the bus because the Dawgs can’t get in the end zone against SC. Then we throw Grantham under the bus because the Dawgs score 30+ points for the last seven games of the season but give up embarrassing play after embarrassing play on D, resulting in sickening losses to Florida and Auburn. Now we’re saying Grantham did a good job last night but we’re throwing Bobo under the bus again for not being able to find the end zone against a team from a lower-tier conference.
I think this sums it all up, fellow frustrated Dawg fans- Georgia stands at 6-7 right now because the team couldn’t muster a complete game on both sides of the ball all season against a team that mattered. There is no consistency or leadership on this team and it all starts at the top. I want Richt to be the guy to bring Georgia back, I really do, but if he doesn’t have it in him anymore (or if he’s not interested in doing so), then we really need a head coaching change as soon as possible.
2011 starts today and there needs to be some serious work done on the recruiting trail. This coaching staff needs to do all it takes to bring in young men with character and drive, both on the field and off of it. They should be honored to don the red and black. They should take playing between the hedges of Saturday with an enormous sense of pride. No more self-absorbed kids who don’t care about their teammates and just look at Georgia as little more than a stepping stone to the NFL.
I’m happy just to close the book on this lousy embarrassment of a season. Here’s to 2011! Go Dawgs!

Seems like the boys at North Avenue have decided to change their name to Georgia and North Florida Institute of Technology since dawgs can’t handle anything with Florida in its name. Oh yeah, that gastrointestinal mess with Bruce (now ain’t that a cute name for a bowsie wowsie little dawg), anyway he drank some Florida Indian River orange juice with his kibbles which is what put him down, and that A.J. character – just before the game his mama told him he weren’t really a green, he was an orange. Really messed his head up. And Murray’s gloves – he’s allergic to grapefruit and he thought that was what the UCF defense had for breakfast. There are no more excuses. McGarity is just putting off the inevitable. Mark Richt cannot bring in the right mix of players to win. He DID win with a mixture of Donnan recruits and players Van Gorder helped identify and develop. He COULD NOT find a D-Coordinator last year. No one wanted the job because they knew Richt would be gone in two years. 2011 will be his last year after UGA loses 4 or 5 games next year. You have to be delusional to think they have the players to turn this mess around. They are losing too much talent and have nothing left to launch them into the 2011 season. Another 2-2 start on the way will finally convince the fools that this man’s strategy was left behind with the “old school” Bobby Bowden regime. It isn’t working and it won’t work next season either. Don’t fool yourself into believing Mark Richt has some sort of clue how to “change things.” He doesn’t or he already would have. Did you see a Georgia team improve this season? Nope unless you are either a liar or a delusional fool.

Since both GT and UGA are licking their wounds from dismal seasons, we can at least turn our attention to some bowl games that matter and to the Falcons tomorrow. Wow, first time in 14 years that neither team had a winning record…unbelievable. How quickly one can fall from grace. The only difference between Tech and Georgia is the talent level. Tech at least over achieves on occasion with the talent that it gets (3 stars mostly) whereas Georgia consistently (year in and year out) has a top 10 if not top 5 recruiting class. That would be maddening to me if I were a Georgia fan. As a former Jacket fan, I can still relish in UGA’s woes, along with every other non-UGA fan does, because you UGA fans are the most obnoxious fans in the nation. You are obnoxious when you win and obnoxious when you lose, so everyone else is enjoying this moment.

I have been one of Richt’s biggest defenders, but now I have to admit that I was wrong.
CMR has lost control of the program both on and off the field.
The team was unprepared and it was apparent that they did not want to be in Memphis and they played like it. Perhaps CMR did lose the team when he went for 3 points when we had driven 97 yards and he didn’t have confidence they could make one more.
Something is very wrong in Athens. CMR needs to stop trying to be the players’ super cool friend and start being a football coach.
If the players were more scared of him than getting caught or hit on the field they would behave off the field and perform on it.
I’m a UGA grad and don’t want UGA to become a football factory that neglects integrity and academics like Auburn and such, but they need tp behave off the field and play like they care on the field and that takes coaching leadership.
I remember when Donnan lost the team to Quincey Carter and his boyz in the hood. It’s not like that now, but we need a coach that sets a more determined and focused tone. I have come to believe that Richt is not capable of that.
Perhaps Richt would step down to be the Dogs’ offensive coordinator and Grantham can be promoted to Head Coach as he seems to have a pair.

NC State would’ve been a win if UCF had started Godfrey instead of Calabrese. The fourth quarter push during that game supports that.
Mistakes were made against Kansas, but if the game had gone another 5 minutes, UCF would’ve come back. The only reason Kansas even came back was because we slacked at the end.
Southern Miss was a blindside, pure and simple; proof that no team should look beyond what’s in front of them. At that point we were worrying about C-USA West and a bowl bid, and didn’t prep in time.
Basically, every failure UCF has made this year is because of stupid mistakes, mistakes we clearly learned from.
Imagine how we’ll do next year, with a matured Godfrey leading, and without any of those stupid mistakes plaguing our team.
I mean, we just beat an SEC team despite those mistakes, didn’t we?

No team that recruits and plays illiterate thugs like Green, Ealey, King, and Rambo can claim any moral high ground. Most schools would not even consider going after gang members like them.
It’s sickening. I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?
As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.
Will it never end? Apparently not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.

Sure we played a very uncharacteristic game for us but we kept on fighting. I’d say we fought “Ford tough.” I guess the problem was that we didn’t play on Saturday. The tone was set early in this game, after driving the ball down UCFs throat for nearly 96 yards, a 4th and 6 inches and Coach Richt calls the field goal team in…after driving 96 yards and having a record of 6-6, you go for a field goal. Come on, you have got to be kidding me. I have gotten calls all year from both my son and daughter, who because of their dad, are also avid Bulldog fans, asking me how can he (Coach Richt) do this or that or how can he call a time out now. Coach Richt has never learned the art of time management, not from day one. I say he has been really good for the UGA program, for about 6 years, but it is time for us to move on and start a new era at UGA. It’s time coach, time to move on and time for UGA to move in a different direction, it’s time…

Justify it anyway you want, make excuses all you want. UCF defense handled a team that averaged 30 + points a game…In the end it was a “W” for UCF…deal with it!

5 years ago, Van Goerder left. UGA defense has been horrible ever since. 5 years ago Richt stopped being OC and gave it to Bobo. Offense has been terribly inconsistent against average talent, horribly inconsistent against good talent. If Grantham gets the upfront talent he needs the D can rebound in one year. If someone like Freidgen comes to be OC the O can rebound in one year. Barring that type of change Richt won`t be here after next year.
Only an ignorant moron believes UGA is any worse with player discipline than any other D-1 school. Some hide it better but people close to sports at this level would tell you they all have relatively the same problem. Today`s coaching is expected to be part baby-sitter, part camp counselor. Can`t be done without a miracle…ask Urban. The problem is what society produces as hs players. Notice I did not say what families produce. Families were destroyed years ago be liberal thinking and government intrusion so now we have what society produces. Enjoy.

Richt seems to recruit players who rather break rules as a game rather than win football games. How many suspensions last year? And you miss your 5th advisor meeting and get suspended. Apparently he didn’t want to go to Memphis. Finish the drill? This team couldn’t muster enough enthuisasm to beat the local JV teams. No pride- no tradition- just losers. And we start 2011 with most of these players. No way Richt can make winners of them and save his job. He was a great coach, but got complacent and lost his ability to win.

Based on the schools that go after the same players that UGA signs, I believe they must have the talent coming out of high school but they are not being developed. “I get it.” From the AD. That’s what they said last year and have said all year long. The problem is systemic, in other words, a breakdown throughout the whole system. These players, particularly the defense, were not properly prepared to compete throughout the whole year. Apart from the bowl game the defense could not stop anyone. And perhaps the reason they could in the bowl game is that many of the offenses, including obviously Georgia’s, were adversely affected by the layoff. It is not about Mark Richt as a person or his faith, it is about Mark Richt and his ability as a head coach. The past two years he has gone backwards in giant steps. I hate to see another year of mediocrity and the same excuses and then another 3-4 years of rebuilding. I can understand why a lot of people are dubious that positive change is going to be forthcoming with the status quo. Like our opponents have labeled us adequately, we no longer can claim that we are Dogs or DAWGS, we have been playing like “pups” for too long.

UGA needs better linemen on both sides of the ball period. Watching some real bowl games today it’s easy to see why UGA got their butt kicked at the line of scrimmage this year. I agree BD that the line play on both sides was pretty much deplorable all season long. The offensive line was most disappointing. The defense, well, from the previous year you could understand that this year was not going to be much better. It used to be that games were won in the trenches. I don’t think that it has changed that much really. Evidently our talent along both sides of the line were overrated or undercoached or a little of both. One other glaring deficiency is the loss of mental toughness, first along the sidelines, and obviously translated onto the field. This is a program in total disarray. Yes, Vicky.

University of Florida officers responded to the claim of a stolen laptop on Oct. 21, 2008. On Friday, a voluntary search of Cam Newton’s dormitory revealed a laptop that matched the serial number of the victim’s laptop on Cam Newton’s desk.
According to report, Cam Newton asked for privacy while speaking with his attorney, Huntley Johnson. When police returned, the laptop was no longer on his desk. The computer was later located behind a garbage dumpster at the Springs Complex, a dorm where many Florida athletes live.

What I noticed is Murray played like he was believing all his press releases about being a “great QB.” Problem was he didn’t throw much of anything that would help get to pay dirt, except that one pass. Either Bobo was skirred to death that the offense might screw up royally, or Murray was too timid to see beyond the LOS. Either way, it spelled doom for the Dawgs. And what is this going for FG with 2 yards left to pay dirt?? That sure showed a lot of confidence in your offense now didn’t it?? I don’t have any good feeling that CMR can turn this around. He hasn’t shown the ability to do so during his tenure. And, frankly, I’m getting durn tired of having to scoop gator “stuff” every year after the game in JAX.

After seeing the offense this season I believe strongly that we need a new offensive coordinator. If that doesn’t happen then a new head coach will probably be in order after next year. As for UCF and Conference USA, they had a good season and are lot better than many of you realize. For example, East Carolina 2 or 3 years ago beat both the Big East and ACC champions the year they won the CUSA championship. Also, don’t forget Houston beat OSU when they were ranked #7 last year. So, be warned many of these non-BCS programs are getting better and more consistent. Don’t forget that many of you believe yourselves that Boise State will beat UGA next year. They also belong to a non-BCS conference. Just a thought, if the Georgia players didn’t take UCF seriously going in to the game, it may explain some of the lack of effort. YOU NEVER TAKE ANY TEAM LIGHTLY & I fear that that too may have happened to us this year, but that to is a coaching issue.

Two irrelevant football teams in this state. One just got there and the jury is still out the other has been there for a while. Tech will make changes, it is its nature, Georgia looks like it really is not going to make any changes. Georgia would be the most served by making changes they have the talent on campus to make a dramatic turnaround, Tech does not have the talent. Prediction, Tech will be the most improved next year and there is no way on paper you will be able to see what they will do to get there, but I am betting they will get there. The same way you couldn’t see Mississippi State coming or Auburn or South Carolina. If Georgia doesn’t make some swiping changes they could be worse next year. The panic I saw in their eyes during the UCF game in the last 2 minutes spoke a thousand words. Tech may have lost to Georgia in the last few minutes but they also played their best football in the fourth quarter. No panic, letting the Georgia back score showed what I am talking about. This same staff won’t panic in the off season, at Georgia they will be totally freaked out by kick off against Boise State.

First of all, it is really an insult to all of those brave folks who have fought and died defending our country to compare their sacrifice to a sports game.
Secondly, I too would like to see someone else besides Mark Richt as coach of UGA, but to question his honor for not resigning when he has done nothing dishonorable to violate the statutes of his contract is extremely judgmental. I have a very hard time believing that you would do what you are trashing his character for not doing.
To say Mark Richt is a bad coach is one thing, but to call him a dishonorable person because he is not winning enough football games to your liking, is something else entirely. And I seriously doubt, were you in his position, that you would resign.

IF and that is a big IF, UGA could get Patterson from TCU, it would have a profound effect on recruiting. Thugs, and others who have no self control, need not apply to UGA. Did you notice the professionalism of all the players on the TCU team. No self glorification and crude behavior from its players whether scoring or struggling, the behavior was the same. Under control. What a refreshing sight for a change from a college team. My HS son also commented that if given the chance he would like to play for a team that conducted themselves so well on the field.

Why would anyone other than a TECHster visit a GT blog?
UGA has its own problems and in case you have not noticed, it is overwhelmingly acknowledged by UGA fans. The problems with the UGA football team are solvable. That is not the case with GT. I don’t care one whit about GT or what they do or don’t do.
Alabama, MS State, SC, Auburn, Florida fans all have the well earned right to look down their noses at UGA this year. Fact: Florida has absolutely owned UGA for years. UGA’s recent record against the others is more than respectable.
I’ve seen this cycle a few times. The good new is UGA has probably bottomed out. Richt is on notice. He gets it done starting immediately or he is gone. As to the dimwits that ask who would want to coach UGA? By asking the question you prove you are too stupid to understand the answer, which is obvious. Hint: who would want to coach MS State, and why?

The problem` is there is a lack of discipline year in and year out same story. Richt continues to show no interest in any desire to make hard changes unless forced. Both offensively and defensively there seem a lack of commitment from coaches and players. Either get with the program or get ride of this bunch who seem to think if you schedule 2-AA schools and win you are a success. The Georgia fans deserve better!!!

Charles – you are right! It all starts with discipline. I would take the G’s off their helmets and they would earn them back. Kind of like when Coach Landers made the girls turn their practice uniforms inside out where the G wouldn’t show. They didn’t deserve to wear the G. This football team other than a couple (Kris Durham) sure don’t deserve to wear them.

As a transplant, with no SEC heritage, I’ve been watching the conference football teams since I moved to ATL 16 years ago. I’m a Tarheel, who understands that the ACC plays basketball, and the SEC plays football. I’ve read so much about the Georgia players gettting in trouble, etc, and feel sorry for Richt. I think every school with appx 90 football players on scholarship is going to have issues from time to time. However, I think you can minimize the issues by bringing in the right kinds of kids to start with. If you have the resources that Georgia has, and can offer a kid a great education and the chance to get the kind of national exposure that will allow you to play at the next level if you have the goods, you should never have to take kids with borderline ethics and morals. You only take those kinds of players when you become desperate to win, and the pressure from alumni and students becomes too great. Years ago, one of my favorite ACC basketball coaches, Jim Valvano, took a chance on a kid that had a consistent history of being in trouble. After this kid got in trouble his freshman year, the reports started coming out about his character, and past troubles. He never should have been recruited in the first place. His SAT’s were reported to be below 500. The NC State team under Jimmy V was never the same, and it had everything to do with bringing in kids to win right away, just to appease alumni and fans. Desperate people do desperate things. Right now, Georgia should be winning most recruiting battles in Georgia and to a certain extent, South Carolina. Florida is in turmoil, as is Tenn. South Carolina is as good as it will ever be, and Clemson is far from being that dominant ACC team. There is no excuse for Georgia missing on the best players in Georgia, South Carolina, and the Southeast. The turnaround starts with bringing in better players, and then coaching with the intelligence of LSU & Alabama. (sorry Auburn – win big a few more years & you can get in that cagtegory) I’m sure a few Georgia coaches with be fired as sacrificial lambs, but the real focus needs to be on better players, with better character, and a coach who is in control. Richt needs a zero tolerance policy. One screw up and you are gone. I know college kids are going to be college kids and make the occasional dumb mistake, but he needs to instill some real fear into his players. As an outsider, I don’t get a sense of discipline or game planning when I watch the Dawgs. It seemed to be in place when Richt got the team initially, but I don’t see it anymore. He can get it back, but he has to be willing to make some tough decisions, and quite frankly, cut whatever is cancerous on his team out, no matter how unpopular or unpleasant it might be. I’d say give him one more year to make drastic improvement, or the AD needs to make changes. Richt needs to lock down every high profile recruit with good morals that he can, and he needs to put some fear in his players. The good players will repsond. Good kids always play better when head cases are removed from the team. Good luck Coach Richt – you can do it. Chart the right path, communicate it to your AD and head of the alumni association, and then stay the course. Make 2011 a great year. You seem to be a realy solid family man and person. Guys with your character need to influence and lead young men. You are at a great univeristy with great resources. Be a hard ass in 2011, and your team will take on that character.

You come on here lecturing us about our football program like you are some authority on college football. Your “on the rise” defending ACC Chump program with its genius coach couldn’t beat the worst UGA team in 14 effing years. No matter how much we suck, YOU SUCK WORSE. Your football program is a big stinking pile of dog crap. We have no respect for it whatsoever. Can you give me one single reason why we should? I have been following Atlanta local sports my entire lifetime and you idiots never change. We have owned you for as long as anyone can remember, but everytime UGA fails at something you run your mouths like you have room to talk. Florida beats us and you run your mouths. We lose an SECCG and you run your mouths. We lose to Central Florida and you run your mouths. See a pattern here Techies? Richt’s teams are and have been for at least five seasons: soft, weak, undisciplined on and off the field, predictable, unprepared, uncoached or uncoachable, and unaccountable. This is all head coaching. I’ve been calling for major changes for 3 years now and have gotten some, but not enough. He must win at least his side of the SEC, and not get blown out in the championship game next year. That is the bare minimum acceptable standard of performance. I don’t care about a horrid, woeful Tech team. I don’t even really care about Boise State. I want to see dramatic progress in the SEC. Period.

UGA Needs to Empower the Fan Base!
It just occured to me why we are in such a miserable hole. It’s because the UGA administration has fixed it where the market does not have an opportunity to work. Normally, if a lousy coach lost consistently or showed a multi-year downward trend, the fans would not buy tickets or merchandise. Then the management would be compelled to make changes. Well, at UGA this doesn’t happen. In order for alumni to get their season tickets, they have to go through the Hartmann Fund shakedown. If they don’t, they lose the privilege of buying tickets the next year. While this might sound like a good way to keep the revenues flowing to improve UGA football, in reality it only serves to let wimpy administrators maintain the status quo. You see, there is no penalty for Adams or McCavity for leaving a lose like Richt in place indefinitely if the revenues don’t fall. The forces of the market that ensure that teams do everything to win are shut down at UGA Athletics. I’m surprised the economists at the Terry School of Business don’t raise a stink on this. But then those professors would be on shaky ground, wouldn’t they? Adams is a little bit like the old Soviet Union boss man. He runs the show as a tyrant. He has so much power he can squelch all dissent and public discourse. The problem with that is that just like the Soviet Union, UGA football suffers from such insulation from the market forces.
UGA alumni pay for UGA football. It’s time to throw off the shackles and demand change to this sleazy Hartmann Fund system.
I urge alumni to do what Nancy Reagan did: JUST SAY NO. At least until we get a PROVEN HEAD COACH AND WORLD CLASS COACHING STAFF.

Here’s an angle to ponder…
We all talk about hiring the Boise State coach, the TCU coach, Van Gorder. In other words, QUALITY PROVEN COACHES. However, how in the world would such a coach, who can pick from several respectable programs or simply remain where he is, going to want to coach at UGA under the strings of such a sleazy slimeball as Michael Adams. Adams has his slimy fingerprints on everything, and Richt is just the type of yes man he wants. McCavity is another little puppy dog that will do whatever Adams says. Qualty world class coaches will not put up with incompetent meddling from above. Unfortunately, it looks bleak. In reality, the best we can hope for is another Jawja Bubba junior coordinator like Kirby Smart. This would be disastrous but is likely anyway. Kirby is not proven, he’s just a flash in the pan. His resume is weaker than Richt’s was. But since he’s a dues paying UGA football mafia man, he or someone like him will be hired. The mafia boys are tight, incompetent, but understand that they work for the president, Michael Sleazebag Adams.
So, Bulldog Nation, we are screwed.

The 2010 Dawgs just sucked. Bottom line. Im a Georgia fan and came to grips with this about mid-season. Richt fired the defensive coordinator after last year and it was still their problem this year….AND the offense was unimpressive again. This is squarely on Mike Bobo for his play calling and Mark Richt for not taking care of it last year or at any point this year.
I wasn’t upset with them losing to UCF necessarily. I was upset with the 6 damn points they scored against them. 2 field goals. Someone has to take the fall for this.
In addition, and as a symptom of the problem, one of the news outlets interviewed one of the players after the game and this dude said that they were beaten by a very good team and that they had won the Conference USA title for a reason. I would rather someone say that we beat ourselves and there is no reason why that team should have been on the same field, much less won the damn game. They have a lot of crap to clean up after this one.

I am beginning to think Mark Richt is not a very smart man. He talks about changes that need to be made and righting the ship. I bet if anyone asked him to expand on this and what exactly he plans to change, he would look at you with an expressionless “10″ mile gaze and say nothing.
I firmly believe he has no plan to change the lack of chemistry, leadership, physical style of play, and discipline.

Best quote of the year from the above linked article – Let’s face it, not many of the naysayers thought UCF had what it took to beat Georgia – even if it was a mediocre version of the once-feared Dawgs. But perhaps it was an omen of good things to come when Georgia mascot – Uga VIII – didn’t show up for the game because of gastrointestinal issues. Or at least that was the official story. Considering what is going on at big-time BCS schools this year, I believe Uga VIII was probably suspended for selling his commemorative Liberty Bowl pooper scooper to a Georgia booster for $1,000.

No Dawg needs to be ashamed to be a Dawg. We have shown excellence through out our existence of a team. Vince Dooley era was an time of winning and expecting championships. He won with a great supporting cast. Richt no longer has a great supporting cast and that’s his problem. We need to be ashamed of his choices and our AD’s choices for a supporting cast. When Richt moves things around and get a cast to help him like he had in his early years as a Dawg head coach, he will be fine. We also need a new offense. The I-formation can’t win Championships without the having the best back in the country. Spread the field.

one last thing before i go eat my supper. if Richt takes the credit for the recruits that are considered ‘thugs’, then he gets credit for the hundreds that aren’t, right? i could make a list, but it would be very long. he even gets credit for kicking some of those ‘thugs’ off of the team, like Mettenberger. and Demetre, shame on him, drinking while he’s at college….what was he thinking?

if i were the ad of uga, i would ask cmr, what he can do in the next year that will make things better, and why has he not already started.
can he get better players? can he get better coaches? can he coach better himself? can he get his asst coaches to coach better? can he change the sch? just what can he do to make things better. i for one would like to know. i don’t thank there is anything he can do, i think if there was he would have already done them.

The bowl game was the worst coached UGA game I have ever seen. UGA was clearly playing not to lose instead of playing to win. CMR’s failure to go for a first down on fourth and a foot after driving the ball 90 yards on the opening series was unbelievable. It set the tone for the entire game and dispirited the entire team and fan base. The other question that needs answering is why did QB AM wear a glove on both hands in 65 degree temperature? He had by far his worse game of the season and he was the only bright spot on the team this year. It was clear that the team was not prepared to play the game. At a minimum, UGA should fire its offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Coach Richt needs to get some fire in his belly instead of trying to look pretty for his tv commercials. Derrick Dooley showed more spunk and determination with a bad Tennessee team than Richt did with a more talented bulldog team. If Richt does not have the guts to fire several of his coaches, he should be replaced.

With 18 starters returning next season will it be the same, can Joe T, build up our team that seems to weaken in the 4th quarter rather than excell. Do we have recruits coming in that will play right away to make a difference?
Coach MR is a fine person and a good coach but whatever it is that’s missing needs to be found and fixed.
To go scoreless for 4 quaters of football to a team who beat nobody. As we beat nobody.
We beat nobody in the top 25 this season and neither did UCF.
Can’t even remember a Goff team doing as badly.
We have tons of talent, but it reminds me of the season That Joe t the 3rd started over Matt Stafford. Same thing as playing seniors that are not as capable as the redshirts sitting on the bench now. Example last season {Evans}.
Whoever makes these decisions needs to do some soul searching and take some chances.
If we don’t have a play or playcaller who can produce a 80 yard drive to open a game and then not pick up 1 yard on 4th and 1 at the 3 yard line then we need to drop down to the ACC or Division 11/
Lots of playcallers out there that would love to be OC at UGA.
Went to the Falcons vs Saints on Monday night and Van Gorder gets his D fired up and we haven’t seen a D like that since he left Athens. We haven’t had a Decent offensive drive against a top 25 team since CMR stopped calling plays.
Why did BOBO sit up in the Box the 1st half against UCF? His coming to the sidelines in the 2nd didn’t change anything. Should tell you there that his prescence either place doesn’t make a difference. Love our coach but his Loyalty to his assistants has got to go.
Mcgarity says the work starts now, and if we don’t come up with a running back to make a difference our opener against Boise St will be a wash. Thats another letter for the mailbag.
With King and Ealey in trouble and fumbling all season does redshirting the Ken Malcome kid seem like a good idea.
His shirt should have come off after Ealey fumbled away the SC game.
Ealey missed the block that got Murray killed to end the Arkansas game which we had an excellent shot at winning with another 1st down at the ARK 45 yd line.
So many coaching mistakes this season you go back and look and we win several more games.
Mostly though is the lack of a productive running back, If we don’t come up with one in the off season then we can all sing the same Menphis Blues that we did on Friday in the Liberty Bowl.
Saw an advertisement in a local bank the week before christmas where CMR is giving an Inspirational speech at some church up in Blairsville, which is his time and his business, and i have nothing aqgainst his speaking and preaching, Thats his business.
But our team is lacking some inspiration in the fundamentsls of FOOTBALL. Like Tackling Blocking and Scoring.
As a coach does he see this?
After the Liberty Bowl he put alot of the blame on the radio show on Murray for holding on to the ball to long and taking sacks and throwing int’s.
When you don’t have a back who can run or pass block the D loads up on you. Not Murray’s fault.
Every play don’t have to start with a play fake. we are a very predictable team and until something changes we’ll stay the same.
Coach MR will be our coach next season and I’ll support h im and our team and i’l still sit in the same seat in section 120 that i’ve sat in for years but it gets harder watching knowing that we can and should be doing better.
Happ New Year To All.
C ya next year in the Dome against Boise St.

They come to school an lose their minds and their mother’s hand holding. We need players with character as well as physical ability. We are going after the wrong guys.

A 6 – 7 LOSING season, looking pathetic in a 10 – 6 loss to UCF, didn’t beat a single team with a winning record, how can it get any worse than this? Just wait ’til next year? Hahaha, they’ll be worse!!!!!! At least they have Coastal Carolina, New Mexico State & Vanderbilt on the schedule! Including a win over Tech (who they own), they could win 4 or possibly 5 – which would be a great year!!!! Becoming irrelevant on the college football scene? All you UGA fans, just suck it up and admit that you lost to a more superior team. Our defense stuffed the run game, was in the backfield all night and kept your stud receiver to only 77 yards. UCF won the battle in the trenches. Next time, don’t think that just because you are in the SEC means you are a better team. We have a top 25 football team, a top 20 basketball team and our ice hockey club team shut out UGA a couple of months ago 11-0 here in GA. So like all bad dogs (yes that is how you spell the animal), you should just put your tail between your legs and whimper on home…

UGA#45 you are correct about great Florida athletes on the team. But there are quite a number of student athletes from Georgia on the UCF squad. Many of whom grew up idolizing UGA and wanting to play for them but were not recruited by Richt. So in addition to their athleticism and talent, they had drive and ambition to play hard for 60 minutes to beat the team that did not want them. One HUGE standout on the UCF squad was DE Bruce Miller; he is from Canton. However, he is a senior and that was his last college game; sorry to see him go. His level of play has always been great (C-USA Defensive Player of the Year for 2009 & 2010) but he really shined on Friday. He was complimented by other GA natives playing in positions on both sides of the ball. So make sure that it is known that UCF recruits where the talent is, including the State of Georgia.

Uga played terrible and Aaron Murray had a really bad game, but as I continued to watch him throw with the glove on and his throwing never settled in. Did no one on the coaching staff have the idea to tell him to take off the glove?
Also Why in the healk did Bobo call a counter play on a first and 25? you have AJ Green, the number one wide receiver in the nation, and you don’t utilize him to the full extent. What is your thinking? Why has Bobo been kept this whole time. Someone needs to get over the fact that he played for UGA and fire him. Football isn’t personal, it’s all about winning championships and with Bobo calling the play it will not happen.

I really believe that McGarity was going to pull Muschamp in – yet, just like on the field- UF is far, far ahead of UGA. What is so disappointing is that there is no excitement with the fans or the players on the field. It as if they come back out of the locker room at halftime – the players just watched “Ole Yeller” or were visiting a terminal cancer ward in a hospital. My Gosh – there HAS to be a change in the next few days and I really believe there will be. Am not sure whom UGA may be looking at – yet I hope it is someone. How many of you would like to have someone like a Mike Leach? I see so many comments that “Richt is a genius,,,,et, al..”"” Really,,,, Really? How many 3rd and 8’s have I seen over the last three or four years in which UGA lines up in the “I” formation and tries a play-action pass. What a waste of time both in the play calling and the countless blood-pressure moments slef absorbed over these last few years. In the 2008 season in which (Stafford, Moreno, and A.J.) were on the field at the same time and you eliminate the Central Michigan and Georgia Southern games – UGA averaged around three touchdowns a game. I say – let really do try to place genius on a UGA coach and reach out for a Mike Leach. Good Gracious,,,, what a mess this program has become.

If mark richt want 2 be a good coach he have 2 do these things.
1.First get rid of bobo, get a new coordinator.
2.Recruit hard on defense must have at least 18man rotation on defense and play your freshman and sophomore.
3.Defense is the key 2 mark richt success.
4.Strength and condition must be a must must get stronger and condition on defense.
5.You don’t have 2 have the top player’s all the time get football player who love the game so much that there dedication to the game is crazy.
6.OREGEN, STANFORD, TCU, AND OTHERS NEVER HAVE TOP RECRUIT HAVE FOOTBALL GUYS WHO LOVE THE GAME.

Yes. Defense. BUT offensive play calling just keeps putting the defense in a mess. Is it just me or is everyone glowing about a QB that brought us our first losing season in over a decade. He had a year to redshirt and the best receiver in the country. Also, I don’t think he can throw the ball over the middle – I don’t think he can see over the o-line.

BlazerDawg…My sentiments exactly. It’s not the losses driving me crazy but the way we are losing. No fire from the coach on the sideline=no fire from the players. There is absolutely no imagination in the offensive play calling. Is it just me or has anyone ever noticed if we pass on first down and it goes incomplete or for very few yards, we run on second down? We seem to be constantly putting ourselves in 3rd and long situations during critical drives.

And as for a new head coach, I definitely am tired of CMR and his no fire personality. Everyone keeps throwing Kirby Smart’s name out there. As for me, I want a proven head coach. Perhaps when Boise State comes calling next year, maybe we take a good close look at Gary Petersen and how he approaches the game and gets the most out of players with probably not near as much talent as we supposedly have. By the way, Rodney Garner needs to be shown the door as well.
