A roundup of the AJC’s coverage of Georgia’s loss to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl:
My game story on another sobering loss in a lost season:
MEMPHIS — Georgia’s football season ended as it began. Badly. Very badly.
The Bulldogs, who started the season by losing four of their first five games, lost their finale here Friday, falling to Central Florida 10-6 in the Liberty Bowl.
The loss — to a Conference USA team that had never before won a bowl game — dropped Georgia’s record to 6-7, giving the Bulldogs their first losing season in 14 years and punctuating a dismal year on and off the field for the UGA program.
“It’s embarrassing to be part of a losing season. It absolutely is,” said kicker Blair Walsh, whose two field goals accounted for all the points the Bulldogs could muster against Central Florida.
Jeff Schultz’s column, which asks if Georgia’s coach can fix his broken program:
MEMPHIS – Mark Richt says he is disappointed. He says he has to make changes. He says the Georgia football program is not where it needs to be, and when a once-respectable SEC program ends its season by failing to score a touchdown against a team from Conference USA, nobody is going to dispute that.
Here’s the only matter up for debate: Does anybody believe Mark Richt can still get it done?
My notebook, including items on Aaron Murray’s gloves, Richt’s decision to settle for a field goal on 4th-and-1 from the UCF 3-yard line and this:
Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green, widely expected to enter the 2011 NFL draft, wasn’t ready to declare his intentions after the Liberty Bowl.
“Not right now because I’m not clear-minded,” he said. “I’m just going to give it a couple of days, let it pass through, and go from there.”
And a photo gallery from the game, including this shot of the post-game handshake between Richt and UCF coach (and former Georgia Tech coach) George O’Leary:

I hope after embarassing the Dawg nation that CMR is out recruitig quality players and not thugs like caleb who must be too stupid to conform to the rules. Blair Walsh is my hero for sticking around instead of grabbing the money. I’ll bet tha AJ won’t show that kind of character.

I grew up in NC. You have nailed part of the problem; the players have no real fear of Richt. He gets “played” by the players. Similar to your example of NC State and Valvano, the same thing happened to Carolina when Dean Smith starting recruiting and coddling the thugs.

Anyone else hear that several of our players, so disgruntled and unsatisfied with our S&C program, took it upon themselves to drive to ATL to lift with a trainer in the mornings before class at some point during the summer or season? Evidently, when UGA coaches heard this they immediately prohibited them from this action. Might explain the S&C mystery and why we looked so weak and out hustled by UCF. At least some guys were trying to make themselves better!

you techie fans, notice, I did not say tech grads, do make yourself appear to be staff infection”scab” type personalities. The real GT grads. present themselves and their viewpoints with dignity and it is appreciated by UGA alum and fans. Agree to disagree types… The single mom raised “scabs” before mentioned are totally classless teenagers at best. Recognize yourself yet..

Did anyone see that Tank kid from TCU yesterday in the Rose Bowl? TCU has under 10,000 students at their school and they are in the BCS bowl of BCS bowls. That kid had so much emotion and passion on every snap. We need some kids like him in Athens. Tank reminds me of David Pollack.

go ahead and continue living life thru 18-22 year old young men who play college football. something tells me some folks on here cried a whole lot when they were kids and didn’t get their way.
i’ll say this about CMR though, if he continues to play Murray at QB, he’ll be digging his own grave. we’ll see what he does there.

I don’t get it. I’m a regular on this blog, and come Monday morning when Barnhart and Schultz throw out fresh meat with a new blog, there will some who will blog on here that it’s not that bad, Richt is a good coach. He just needs time…………Let me tell you folks something….Pick any team in the top 25…Any….And if they would of had the three years we had and looked like we did in that Bowl Friday, the coach would be gone. Ask Maryland (alum and ACC coach of the year,8 wins, gone)Maryland for pete’s sake. Miami. Gone. Fired by a liberal Clinton Cabinet member, an African American to boot. What are we waiting for. Who’s looking forward to next year with this staff back.

Typical loser, waiting for a pervert and sexual deviant who hasn’t played football in a year, who was suspended for his senior season in high school, who is a typical MR recruit, and who is loved by loser fans like you to come in and save MR’s arse! Fans like you make me want to puke!

I guess beating Yech is all it takes… Typical excuse making mediocre fans!
Answer – ZERO! After Friday he deserves nothing! He should quit as he has already quit on UGA and the fans. Only thing is, losers can’t see he has quit. Its always one more year. I say NO more!!!!!!!

Do all you devot Mark Richt fans want more of this??? You have continued to say “one more year”, what a joke!!!! Open your eyes and look at the last 3 years of deterioration. The program is totally out of control and it will only get worse if we don’t make a change. How can CMR say next year we will have a “dream team”, he must be totally out of touch with reality….
Save our program with a new head coach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Richt’s gotta go. UGA will lose A.J.,Kris,and many others and will be a worse team offensively than this year. To lose to a recent 4 year member of Division 1 football like UCF is unacceptable. Richt’s gotta go. This was like losing to Valdosta State.

A.J. green was a non-impact player in this game. How does a # 1 draft pick receiver disappear in a bowl game ? He’s good enough for an NFL qb to throw to but not Aaron Murray ? The worst call was to kick the field goal from the 2 yard line. Poor coaching. No offense against a sorry team from a sorry conference ? Awful.

well, not for us, but he’ll be LSU’s QB next year… gotta a serious question for ya. would you care to make a small wager on next year? i know Tim wouldn’t like people gambling on his site, but, i would be willing to put 10, 12, 15K on next year. i’m saying we win 9 or 10 games next year. whaddya say? and, would that make you happy, or is 9 or 10 wins not good enough for ya?

one last thing before i go eat my supper. if Richt takes the credit for the recruits that are considered ‘thugs’, then he gets credit for the hundreds that aren’t, right? i could make a list, but it would be very long. he even gets credit for kicking some of those ‘thugs’ off of the team, like Mettenberger. and Demetre, shame on him, drinking while he’s at college….what was he thinking?

if i were the ad of uga, i would ask cmr, what he can do in the next year that will make things better, and why has he not already started.
can he get better players? can he get better coaches? can he coach better himself? can he get his asst coaches to coach better? can he change the sch? just what can he do to make things better. i for one would like to know. i don’t thank there is anything he can do, i think if there was he would have already done them.
