Read all about it: UCF 10, UGA 6

A roundup of the AJC’s coverage of Georgia’s loss to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl:

My game story on another sobering loss in a lost season:

MEMPHIS — Georgia’s football season ended as it began. Badly. Very badly.

The Bulldogs, who started the season by losing four of their first five games, lost their finale here Friday, falling to Central Florida 10-6 in the Liberty Bowl.

The loss — to a Conference USA team that had never before won a bowl game — dropped Georgia’s record to 6-7, giving the Bulldogs their first losing season in 14 years and punctuating a dismal year on and off the field for the UGA program.

“It’s embarrassing to be part of a losing season. It absolutely is,” said kicker Blair Walsh, whose two field goals accounted for all the points the Bulldogs could muster against Central Florida.

Jeff Schultz’s column, which asks if Georgia’s coach can fix his broken program:

MEMPHIS – Mark Richt says he is disappointed. He says he has to make changes. He says the Georgia football program is not where it needs to be, and when a once-respectable SEC program ends its season by failing to score a touchdown against a team from Conference USA, nobody is going to dispute that.

Here’s the only matter up for debate: Does anybody believe Mark Richt can still get it done?

My notebook, including items on Aaron Murray’s gloves, Richt’s decision to settle for a field goal on 4th-and-1 from the UCF 3-yard line and this:

Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green, widely expected to enter the 2011 NFL draft, wasn’t ready to declare his intentions after the Liberty Bowl.

“Not right now because I’m not clear-minded,” he said. “I’m just going to give it a couple of days, let it pass through, and go from there.”

And a photo gallery from the game, including this shot of the post-game handshake between Richt and UCF coach (and former Georgia Tech coach) George O’Leary:

During an NCAA investigation, it was revealed that the Georgia Tech football program used ineligible players while O’Leary was head coach.

Georgia Tech was placed on probation and lost scholarships because of the violations.

UGA has been outcoached all year. Does anybody really think that’s going to improve? McGarity obviously doesn’t “get it” if he doesn’t fire Richt after that pathetic performance on Friday. It was embarrassing and humiliating. Our fans and especially our players deserve better.

Uga has had numerous 5 star recruits that haven’t lived up to their potential as a dog. Many have then went on to the NFL. It’s the coaching staffs fault for not developing the players? Or is it the players are more productive once they get their millons?

You’ve got to be the dumbest mofo Ive ever heard. First of all the thing about UGA fans not being able to read is funny because UGA is a top ranked university in academics. Also most UGA fans are wealthy successful business people, and a few rednecks just like any other SEC team. You cant even put together a correctly written sentence. Second this was a horrible season in UGA football, agreed, but Georgia is a top notch athletic program that will get back on track, even if it starts with firing CMR. Im thinking this much stupidity can only come from a Florida fan so see you next year in Jax.

This game was a disgrace for GA football. We were unprepared and outplayed. We made coaching mistakes that are simply not made on an SEC team. There needs an example to be made in our coaching ranks and better discipline for our players. Where is Erk Russell when you desperately need him … oh, right. 3 – 18 vs. FLORIDA??? OH HELL NO – FIX IT COACH RICHT! If you have a job in 2011 it will be a minor miracle. STOP GIVING US AN “ALMOST” TEAM.

UGA needs to call up Gary Patterson from TCU with a blank check and bring his entire staff with him. They are everything UGA is not…prepared, well coached, very disciplined and do not make mistakes. Think of what Gary Patterson could do with UGAs talent…they would absolutely steamroll everyone in their way.

They need to get some extra work in the weight room.
They got outmuscled consistently throughout the season.
Too much talent for a 6/7 finish. Saban or Miles would
have gone at least 10/3 with all that talent.

Alright! I just saw that the Bulldogs crushed their opponents in their bowl game by a score of 52-14. That will teach those other conferences that the SEC don’t play around. Woo hoo! I knew Mark Richt was not going to let us all down entirely this year. Way to go, Bulldogs!

What?!?!?! Oh, you mean it was those other SEC Bulldogs from Mississippi that actually won the bowl game? You mean that it was our Bulldogs from Georgia that lost to a Florida directional-type school by scoring only 6 lousy points? Thanks again, Coach Richt. Glory, glory indeed.

What I noticed is Murray played like he was believing all his press releases about being a “great QB.” Problem was he didn’t throw much of anything that would help get to pay dirt, except that one pass. Either Bobo was skirred to death that the offense might screw up royally, or Murray was too timid to see beyond the LOS. Either way, it spelled doom for the Dawgs. And what is this going for FG with 2 yards left to pay dirt?? That sure showed a lot of confidence in your offense now didn’t it?? I don’t have any good feeling that CMR can turn this around. He hasn’t shown the ability to do so during his tenure. And, frankly, I’m getting durn tired of having to scoop gator “stuff” every year after the game in JAX.

UCF is a respectab;e opponent but hope they don’t get the big head
over beating a bottom feeder in SEC. lots of others have done it too.

AC

January 2nd, 2011

After seeing the offense this season I believe strongly that we need a new offensive coordinator. If that doesn’t happen then a new head coach will probably be in order after next year. As for UCF and Conference USA, they had a good season and are lot better than many of you realize. For example, East Carolina 2 or 3 years ago beat both the Big East and ACC champions the year they won the CUSA championship. Also, don’t forget Houston beat OSU when they were ranked #7 last year. So, be warned many of these non-BCS programs are getting better and more consistent. Don’t forget that many of you believe yourselves that Boise State will beat UGA next year. They also belong to a non-BCS conference. Just a thought, if the Georgia players didn’t take UCF seriously going in to the game, it may explain some of the lack of effort. YOU NEVER TAKE ANY TEAM LIGHTLY & I fear that that too may have happened to us this year, but that to is a coaching issue.
