A roundup of the AJC’s coverage of Georgia’s loss to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl:
My game story on another sobering loss in a lost season:
MEMPHIS — Georgia’s football season ended as it began. Badly. Very badly.
The Bulldogs, who started the season by losing four of their first five games, lost their finale here Friday, falling to Central Florida 10-6 in the Liberty Bowl.
The loss — to a Conference USA team that had never before won a bowl game — dropped Georgia’s record to 6-7, giving the Bulldogs their first losing season in 14 years and punctuating a dismal year on and off the field for the UGA program.
“It’s embarrassing to be part of a losing season. It absolutely is,” said kicker Blair Walsh, whose two field goals accounted for all the points the Bulldogs could muster against Central Florida.
Jeff Schultz’s column, which asks if Georgia’s coach can fix his broken program:
MEMPHIS – Mark Richt says he is disappointed. He says he has to make changes. He says the Georgia football program is not where it needs to be, and when a once-respectable SEC program ends its season by failing to score a touchdown against a team from Conference USA, nobody is going to dispute that.
Here’s the only matter up for debate: Does anybody believe Mark Richt can still get it done?
My notebook, including items on Aaron Murray’s gloves, Richt’s decision to settle for a field goal on 4th-and-1 from the UCF 3-yard line and this:
Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green, widely expected to enter the 2011 NFL draft, wasn’t ready to declare his intentions after the Liberty Bowl.
“Not right now because I’m not clear-minded,” he said. “I’m just going to give it a couple of days, let it pass through, and go from there.”
And a photo gallery from the game, including this shot of the post-game handshake between Richt and UCF coach (and former Georgia Tech coach) George O’Leary:

did anybody watched Bama playing today? the difference between Bama and Georgia is huge, I lost faith in our program. there is no way Georgia can look like Bama today. we have the athletes but lack the fire, the physicality and the urge. this is a reflection of the head coach and the coaching staff. they are soft and lost their mind. Georgia should fire Richt today and hire Smart or Patterson. I lost my Georgia and I feel sad about it! please help me find my Georgia!!

No I have seen individual players make plays when there was nothing there. It had nothing to do with playcalling. Thomas couldn’t break a tackle if his life depended on it.

I have been longtime Mark Richt supporter, but after watching the decline in the last 3 years and the debacle tonight, I could care less if they fire him tonight and could care less what some college or high school kids think. Whether they will decide to come to Georgia OR NOT DOES NOT DEPEND ON RICHT BEING THERE Many coaching changes have good recruiting classes Richt lost DA-RICHT LAST YEAR TO A COACHING CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am tired!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Needybear

No running back would look good behind this pathetic bunch of offensive linemen. Football is blocking & tackling. This team cannot block & does very little tackling.

“I get it.” From the AD. That’s what they said last year and have said all year long. The problem is systemic, in other words, a breakdown throughout the whole system. These players, particularly the defense, were not properly prepared to compete throughout the whole year. Apart from the bowl game the defense could not stop anyone. And perhaps the reason they could in the bowl game is that many of the offenses, including obviously Georgia’s, were adversely affected by the layoff. It is not about Mark Richt as a person or his faith, it is about Mark Richt and his ability as a head coach. The past two years he has gone backwards in giant steps. I hate to see another year of mediocrity and the same excuses and then another 3-4 years of rebuilding. I can understand why a lot of people are dubious that positive change is going to be forthcoming with the status quo. Like our opponents have labeled us adequately, we no longer can claim that we are Dogs or DAWGS, we have been playing like “pups” for too long.

UGA needs better linemen on both sides of the ball period. Watching some real bowl games today it’s easy to see why UGA got their butt kicked at the line of scrimmage this year. Got to get more physical O linemen that drive guys into the ground or all the way to the sideline. They have no mean, nasty beasts on either line.

I agree BD that the line play on both sides was pretty much deplorable all season long. The offensive line was most disappointing. The defense, well, from the previous year you could understand that this year was not going to be much better. It used to be that games were won in the trenches. I don’t think that it has changed that much really. Evidently our talent along both sides of the line were overrated or undercoached or a little of both. One other glaring deficiency is the loss of mental toughness, first along the sidelines, and obviously translated onto the field. This is a program in total disarray. Yes, Vicky.

No coach anywhere is going to leave a top AC/DC job or another HC job to come to GA. UGA now is on the same level as Vandy and Mississippi. You Mark Richt loving idiots may not like that but it is the truth.

UGA should follow Alabama’s lead and spend $150,000 per football player. That way we could win football games and be in 3rd poorest state in the nation.

First, Alabama is not the 3rd poorest state in the nation.
Second, while i agree a very very high percentage of Alabama fans probably never stepped foot on campus Sunday-Friday afternoon, I think there is a higher percentage of UGA fans you could say the same thing about.

University of Florida officers responded to the claim of a stolen laptop on Oct. 21, 2008. On Friday, a voluntary search of Cam Newton’s dormitory revealed a laptop that matched the serial number of the victim’s laptop on Cam Newton’s desk.
According to report, Cam Newton asked for privacy while speaking with his attorney, Huntley Johnson. When police returned, the laptop was no longer on his desk. The computer was later located behind a garbage dumpster at the Springs Complex, a dorm where many Florida athletes live.
