Read all about it: UCF 10, UGA 6

A roundup of the AJC’s coverage of Georgia’s loss to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl:

My game story on another sobering loss in a lost season:

MEMPHIS — Georgia’s football season ended as it began. Badly. Very badly.

The Bulldogs, who started the season by losing four of their first five games, lost their finale here Friday, falling to Central Florida 10-6 in the Liberty Bowl.

The loss — to a Conference USA team that had never before won a bowl game — dropped Georgia’s record to 6-7, giving the Bulldogs their first losing season in 14 years and punctuating a dismal year on and off the field for the UGA program.

“It’s embarrassing to be part of a losing season. It absolutely is,” said kicker Blair Walsh, whose two field goals accounted for all the points the Bulldogs could muster against Central Florida.

Jeff Schultz’s column, which asks if Georgia’s coach can fix his broken program:

MEMPHIS – Mark Richt says he is disappointed. He says he has to make changes. He says the Georgia football program is not where it needs to be, and when a once-respectable SEC program ends its season by failing to score a touchdown against a team from Conference USA, nobody is going to dispute that.

Here’s the only matter up for debate: Does anybody believe Mark Richt can still get it done?

My notebook, including items on Aaron Murray’s gloves, Richt’s decision to settle for a field goal on 4th-and-1 from the UCF 3-yard line and this:

Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green, widely expected to enter the 2011 NFL draft, wasn’t ready to declare his intentions after the Liberty Bowl.

“Not right now because I’m not clear-minded,” he said. “I’m just going to give it a couple of days, let it pass through, and go from there.”

And a photo gallery from the game, including this shot of the post-game handshake between Richt and UCF coach (and former Georgia Tech coach) George O’Leary:

Why don’t you do something productive with your life- like helping people that are less fortunate than you, or widows, or coach little kids, or something that would change your outlook on life. But no, you are content to rip a coach and his 19 and 20 year old kids who don’t PRODUCE according to your expectations. How very sad you are.

I note that writers here continue to refer to college atletes as “kids.” Usually in the context of excusing very bad behavior. Maybe they should be looked at as young ADULTS,and EXPECT ADULT BEHAVIOR instead of excusing the bad. Many people their age are dying for our country, working hard and supporting families, leading responsible lives, etc. I am tired of seeing these spoiled-brat athletes treated like gods! Get real, people! Football is not EVERYTHING! In fact,at best,it’s just an entertainment vehicle.

The tone was set early in this game, after driving the ball down UCFs throat for nearly 96 yards, a 4th and 6 inches and Coach Richt calls the field goal team in…after driving 96 yards and having a record of 6-6, you go for a field goal. Come on, you have got to be kidding me. I have gotten calls all year from both my son and daughter, who because of their dad, are also avid Bulldog fans, asking me how can he (Coach Richt) do this or that or how can he call a time out now. Coach Richt has never learned the art of time management, not from day one. I say he has been really good for the UGA program, for about 6 years, but it is time for us to move on and start a new era at UGA. It’s time coach, time to move on and time for UGA to move in a different direction, it’s time…

I don’t know what all the fuss is about. We won in Shreavport last year and this year we still ended the year in a great bowl game. What more can you ask for? Plus my hair and tan look great. Plus this is a team you can be proud of, errr, never mind.

As a UCF Alum, I am very happy at the win. I was in Memphis and heard nothing positive from UGA fans…from the time I arrived at the hotel, I was told things like, “UCF doesn’t deserve to be here,” “Georgia is a SEC powerhouse, UCF can’t compete,” “Georgia deserves a better bowl than playing UCF, ” etc. Bottom line, UGA lost. Justify it anyway you want, make excuses all you want. UCF defense handled a team that averaged 30 + points a game…In the end it was a “W” for UCF…deal with it!

UGA reminds of the final days of Tubberville at Auburn. Great guy but for whatever reason, the magic was gone and it was time for a change. Richt will have to clean house with his staff to keep his job. If he doesn’t want to make the difficult decisions, someone will make them for him. Ask Tubby.

This loss officailly puts CMR and Bobo on the hot seat. I hope that Richt turns it around next year because I like the guy. That offense is too unimaginative. Sounds like from Richt that there will be no personell changes but a tweaking of systems.

5 years ago, Van Goerder left. UGA defense has been horrible ever since. 5 years ago Richt stopped being OC and gave it to Bobo. Offense has been terribly inconsistent against average talent, horribly inconsistent against good talent. If Grantham gets the upfront talent he needs the D can rebound in one year. If someone like Freidgen comes to be OC the O can rebound in one year. Barring that type of change Richt won`t be here after next year.

Only an ignorant moron believes UGA is any worse with player discipline than any other D-1 school. Some hide it better but people close to sports at this level would tell you they all have relatively the same problem. Today`s coaching is expected to be part baby-sitter, part camp counselor. Can`t be done without a miracle…ask Urban. The problem is what society produces as hs players. Notice I did not say what families produce. Families were destroyed years ago be liberal thinking and government intrusion so now we have what society produces. Enjoy.

More of the same recruiting of mindless thugs, and more of the same results of poor decisions (by both the non-student athletes and coaches who recruit them).

Richt seems to recruit players who rather break rules as a game rather than win football games. How many suspensions last year? And you miss your 5th advisor meeting and get suspended. Apparently he didn’t want to go to Memphis. Finish the drill? This team couldn’t muster enough enthuisasm to beat the local JV teams. No pride- no tradition- just losers. And we start 2011 with most of these players. No way Richt can make winners of them and save his job. He was a great coach, but got complacent and lost his ability to win.

The only thing worse than the 2010 season is knowing that Richt gets to coach Georgia in 2011. I’ll go out on a limb and say that this year will bring player arrests, no SEC championship, a loss to Florida, porous defense, questionable play calls on offense, and a mediocre bowl. What’s the definition of insanity?

Hit A Single – And you are right, our talent level is overrated. Based on the schools that go after the same players that UGA signs, I believe they must have the talent coming out of high school but they are not being developed. To me, that is not a player problem, but a coaching problem. From the strength and conditioning staff, to the position coaches, to the head coach.
