Read all about it: UCF 10, UGA 6

A roundup of the AJC’s coverage of Georgia’s loss to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl:

My game story on another sobering loss in a lost season:

MEMPHIS — Georgia’s football season ended as it began. Badly. Very badly.

The Bulldogs, who started the season by losing four of their first five games, lost their finale here Friday, falling to Central Florida 10-6 in the Liberty Bowl.

The loss — to a Conference USA team that had never before won a bowl game — dropped Georgia’s record to 6-7, giving the Bulldogs their first losing season in 14 years and punctuating a dismal year on and off the field for the UGA program.

“It’s embarrassing to be part of a losing season. It absolutely is,” said kicker Blair Walsh, whose two field goals accounted for all the points the Bulldogs could muster against Central Florida.

Jeff Schultz’s column, which asks if Georgia’s coach can fix his broken program:

MEMPHIS – Mark Richt says he is disappointed. He says he has to make changes. He says the Georgia football program is not where it needs to be, and when a once-respectable SEC program ends its season by failing to score a touchdown against a team from Conference USA, nobody is going to dispute that.

Here’s the only matter up for debate: Does anybody believe Mark Richt can still get it done?

My notebook, including items on Aaron Murray’s gloves, Richt’s decision to settle for a field goal on 4th-and-1 from the UCF 3-yard line and this:

Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green, widely expected to enter the 2011 NFL draft, wasn’t ready to declare his intentions after the Liberty Bowl.

“Not right now because I’m not clear-minded,” he said. “I’m just going to give it a couple of days, let it pass through, and go from there.”

And a photo gallery from the game, including this shot of the post-game handshake between Richt and UCF coach (and former Georgia Tech coach) George O’Leary:

still@the bar: Your above post indicate you need to get in a cab and go home. I am a GT fan but I believe the Bulldogs have nothing to be ashamed about because they lost to UCF. This is a good team regardless of conference affiliation. They are also a ranked team.

STUPID MOE RON!!!! Stinger2 their record
UCF beat
South Dakota 4-7
Buffalo 2-10
UAB 4-8
Marshal 5-7
Rice 4-8
East Carolina 6-6
Houston 5-7
Tulane 4-8
Memphis 1-11
So Methodist 7-6
LOST
Southern Miss 8-4
Kansas St 7-5
North Carolina St 8-4
They beat 8 teams with losing records, 1 team with a .500 record and 1 team with a winning record.
They lost to 3 teams with winning records.
Well they are better that the Mighty UGA of the SEC because the dawgs didn’t beat a single team with a winning record.
LOOK at UCF played and please tell they should have been on the same field with the TALENT UGA has.
HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA
Stinger2 you are too STUPID to be a TECH GRAD. go play W.O.W or MOM upside down. Leave football to people that actually understand the game.

Stinger2 I guess NCSU of the ACC is better than UGA too. So far all the SEC teams that have played the ACC teams have lost and by dawg Logic since NCSU beat CFU who beat UGA then NCSU and the ACC own the SEC. Well Syracuse beat KSU so Syracuse the the real Conference USA Champs too right? That is what the dawgs said when they beat Tech and Tech was the ACC Champs.

It’s obvious the leadership at UGA could care less about winning any championships …. After all the athletic association has a surplus of $63,000,000….. believe me if the surplus starts dropping … Heads will role…. !!!! It is and will always be about the MONEY… Don’t be surprised when they jack up the ticket prices…. Next they will go up on the Hartman fund contributions …

First, UGAG didn’t belong in a bowl game. If Kentucky had done their job, UGAG would have been sitting at home.

Second, the outcome and the tenor of the game bears out the first point.

Third, it was a tough game to watch as the outcome seemed to be more of a “roll of the dice” than about technique (another Tech reference) and talent. Good outcome though.

Fourth, I’m looking forward to the absolute rape which will occur in Boise State’s FIRST game next year. UGAG will be 0-1 and in my book, that is where I hope they will always be.

We didn’t want to finish with a loss. We didn’t want to finish with a losing record. … There are reasons why we ended up the way we did. We’ve got to make change. We’ve got to make sure it doesn’t happen again in the future.”

Would be great if CMR would tell us the reasons and the plan for improvement ….. But there is to much hubris at UGA for all of that!!!! How dare you ? Me …. Most of you have never played a down of football…. We haven’t forgotten those comments for last yr…

Stinger2- As a UGA fan, I apreciate your sentiment and you are right that UCF is a respectable opponent. They won, UGA lost, ood for them.

What is driving me nuts is the way UGA is losing…no discipline, little passion, little creativity. These are not the Dawgs of Dooley and Russell, or even Goff. Something has to change.

Don’t be too depressed, Dawg fans. Your school is still the Number 1 party school in the country! With all your other losses you blamed the big, mean opponents who actually tackled hard. Or you blamed the refs. I guess you were just a losing team all along. AJ Green was overhyped. He could do nothing last night.

My New Years resolution – I will NOT go to or watch another UGA so long as Richt is the head coach.

I suggest everyone do the same cause its the only way to force change around UGA.

If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.

I’m really gonna watch for news this weekend out of Athens…………….NOT………The ride should be over. That staff is overpaid a clueless…..This Central Florida team won 1 game with teams with winning records. I don’t think anyone understands how getting manhandled by this team should be causing meetings this weekend. At the least, McGarity ought to have Richt Fire Bobo and hire Ralph frigen (sp) now as OC. Searles needs to go also. The line play was HORRIBLE. Anyteam team can get 5-7 yards up the middle on us ANYTIME. We are pretty bad.

Oh yeah, and it hurt to have 3 players sitting out for academic reasons. Bulldog fans whined about Caleb King not showing up for court and he had to sit out. Now he didn’t show up for what, 3 “academic appointments” and had to sit out. Other players couldn’t even muster 6 academic credits so they had to sit out. Blame the coach all you want but these players are a bunch of spoiled brats who take no responsibility for themselves. Mark Richt would probably love to go to a school where the players actually took their education seriously.

Maybe UGA should hire a babysitter for each player to make sure he goes to class and does his homework so he can earn more than 6 hours, goes to court if required, doesn’t drink too much, doesn’t sell his jersey, doesn’t get into a fight, and generally grows up. That would be money well spent.

Well Well Well… It’s 8:18, I’m hungover, at work and I guess i’m still in shock.. Can’t say enough about our guys.. They played to their potential.. Murray looked a little off… AJ was dreaming of the Pros.. and Richter was planning his next mission trip. Hats off to Durham, you are a great wide receiver and will be missed more than that guy that used to wear the #8. Defense, did they make the trip or were they taking care of UGA.. Pathetic end to a pretty sorry season.. At least it’s over. Richt, will you please be the man that Mr. Meyer was and quit? We neither need or want you anymore. We can lose without funding your life.. You are not a very good Ford spokesman but you are better at that than coaching football.. Of course he’s disappointed, he lost his bowl game bonus. Disgraceful.. 14 years without a losing season and this is what you gave us for new year’s. Thanks. Also, not that anybody will read this or even care but Mr. Richt will you please quit throwing our players under the bus and take some responsibility.. Great man or not, you suck!

To run it’s offense Florida hired a guy named “Wise”, Uga is run by a “Bobo”! I love Richt, but his ship may have sailed. It’s the unfortunate nature of fans today and what most of them complain about in college sports that really drives the game…MONEY! Look back at the careers of all of the long-time great coaches and you’ll see that they had “down times”. Richt could turn it around but he’s only got one more year to do it.

If Richt doesn’t move Bobo & Searles out this week then he needs to go. Either we can’t evaluate talent or can’t coach them up. The offensive line has not run blocked in years (except @ Tech last year); our play calling & play design is too predictable & too sand lot. Get well soon Uga VIII.

“Blame the coach all you want but these players are a bunch of spoiled brats who take no responsibility for themselves.”

cg I tend to agree with you with the exception of not blaming the coach. The coach must be blamed. He is in charge. He recruits the “spoiled brats”. He allows the “spoiled brats” to remain in the starting lineup or on the team.

And now the coach is bringing in another “spoiled brat” to play QB.

We all know there are a lot of quality students on the UGA football team. We all know that there are “spoiled brats” on the UGA football team.

What was the number of arrests in 2010, twenty one? Is that correct?
How many are still on the team? All but one? Is that correct? (Someone correct my numbers if I am wrong.)

But correct numbers aside, the point is off the field problems apparently result in no lessons learned. Sitting a guy for a game who does not give a damn accomplishes little.

Richt is still one of the best minds in football. He did not suddenly get dumb. But I think he did lose the edge that UGA has had since Dooley’s first year. Richt is more in the role of Bobby Bowden’s “let it go, it will get better”. He needs more of Dooley’s “Bloody Tuesday” practice sessions.

And UGA has let what’s important get away. UGA is 3 – 18 against Florida. Florida is a conference game. Three wins against eighteen losses is inexcusable against a conference opponent. When you are in a conference all that matters is the conference games. The GT, Colorado and next years Boise game game do not matter. The conference games matter. Beating GT and Colorado will not get you in the Dome for the SEC championship game. Running the table against the conference opponents will get you in that game.

My two cents.

Don’t blame Richt for the players who don’t know how to get to class and stay out of jail. Not his job to babysit 24/7. I am still amazed at the weekly update on what kids have been arrested or have academic issues at UGA.

While FL is making new hires that will change the dynamics of the conference, we are going to do what? With other teams showing that they have a pulse and showing that they are willing to make the changes necessary to compete, what will we do?

I will be very surprised if we are able to keep any of our commits for 2011. Why would they want to come to UGA and be coached down?
