Liberty Bowl preview: Can Dogs avoid first losing season in 14 years?

Please join the conversation on Jeff Schultz’s live blog during the game.
Previewing Georgia vs. Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl (3:30 p.m. Friday on ESPN):
3 storylines
- 1. Winning season or losing season? Georgia enters the game with a 6-6 record. A victory would keep give the Bulldogs their 14th consecutive winning season, albeit barely. A loss would give the Bulldogs their first losing season since a 5-6 record in 1996, Jim Donnan’s first season as coach.
- 2. A program-building game? Central Florida has made substantial strides in seven seasons under coach George O’Leary, winning two Conference USA championships and becoming nationally ranked for the first time (No. 24 in the latest coaches’ poll). A nationally televised bowl win over an SEC opponent would be a significant next step in the growth of the UCF program.
- 3. Battle of the freshman quarterbacks. UCF’s Jeff Godfrey and UGA’s Aaron Murray are the nation’s top two freshmen quarterbacks in pass efficiency rating. Godfrey, a true freshman, ranks No. 8 overall with a 165.28 rating and Murray, a redshirt freshman, No. 9 with a 162.72 rating. The 5-foot-11, 182-pound Godfrey is a dual-threat quarterback who has passed for 2,042 yards and 13 touchdowns and run for 546 yards and 10 touchdowns. Godfrey has completed 68 percent of his passes, Murray 62 percent of his.
A Georgia win would …
- Extend the Bulldogs’ bowl winning streak to five games.
- Give the Dogs a 6-2 finish to this season after a 1-4 start.
- Be the Dogs’ first victory this season over a ranked opponent.
A Central Florida win would …
- Be UCF’s first-ever victory in a bowl game after losses to Nevada in the 2005 Hawaii Bowl, Mississippi State in the 2007 Liberty Bowl and Rutgers in the 2009 St. Petersburg Bowl.
- Set a school record for victories in a season by the Knights, who are 10-3 entering the bowl.
- Be the Knights’ ninth win in 10 games since a 2-2 start this season.
Keep an eye on …
- For Georgia: Murray could break records held by Matthew Stafford, D.J. Shockley and Mike Bobo. Two touchdown passes would break Stafford’s UGA single-season record of 25, set in 2008. One touchdown pass or run would surpass Shockley for most total TDs accounted for in a UGA season, Murray already having matched Shockley’s 28 (24 passing, four running) in 2005. And Murray could clinch the UGA single-season record for pass-efficiency rating, bettering Bobo’s mark of 155.8 in 1997.
- For Central Florida: Bruce Miller was an all-county and all-region player at Woodstock High School, but he had no major-college scholarship offers until UCF discovered him. He has grown into the star of the UCF defense. The senior defensive end is the NCAA leader among active players in career sacks with 34. Two sacks on Friday would tie Miller with former Georgia star David Pollack for third place on the NCAA career sack list (since 2000, when the NCAA began keeping the stat).
The numbers game
- 26-16-3: Georgia’s all-time record in bowl games. (The Bulldogs rank fourth nationally in bowl victories and are tied for fifth in bowl appearances.)
- 1-1: Georgia’s record in the Liberty Bowl, losing to Jim Donnan-quarterbacked N.C. State 14-7 in 1967 and beating Arkansas 20-17 in 1987 on freshman John Kasay’s 39-yard field goal on the game’s final play.
UGA-UCF history
- Previous meeting: Georgia escaped with a 24-23 victory at Sanford Stadium on Sept. 25, 1999, in the only previous football game between UGA and UCF. The Knights missed an extra point after scoring a touchdown with 5:21 to play but threatened to win the game on their final possession by driving to the Georgia 20-yard line. Two penalties and a sack pushed the Knights out of field-goal range, and a Jamie Henderson interception ended the game.
The line
- Georgia is a 6 ½-point favorite.

Georgia might want to take this game very seriously. I watched UCF beat SMU for their confernce title game and they are a pretty good team. Their qb is very athletic and passes the ball very acurately.
IF UGA loses this game, then opens the season next year with a Boise State lost we can all kiss CMR goodbye.

UGA will win this game based on several factors, but most of all they have better athletes overall.
Murray will set the record(s) and AJ will shine in his last game wearing the red and black.

Richt might win a Bowl game, but his schedule in 2011 is brutal.
Richt has to face so many teams with a better record like Boise, Aub, Ark, Florida, SC, Miss St. 6 teams better than him.
Then he faces 3 equal coaches: Georgia Tech, Tennessee & Kentucky.
Tough 9 games, expect Richt to end his career in 2011, the Liberty will be his last bowl game as a Georgia coach, hopefully, he loses, and McGarity fires him so 2011 isn’t wasted.

Here is the truth. There is no way UGA shouldn’t win this game by 28. Throw it to AJ a lot. The end.
UCF doesn’t have anyone who can stop him. Keep it simple, don’t start getting all conservative when we get a lead. It SHOULD NOT be that complicated.

Joe, what are you smoking?
1. UGA has a very favorable schedule.
2. “Equal” coaches in GT, UK and UT? Are you serious right now? When those “equal” coaches win 2 conference championships and 2 BCS bowls, get back to me.
3. Of the 6 teams “better” than Richt that you named, not one should be better next year, and Auburn is the only team of those 6 truly better than UGA this year.
4. Lay off the drugs. Please.

The Aaron Murray “lost year” of 2010, 6-6, can you guys believe this? Unreal. I didn’t think ANYONE could be worse than Joe Cox’s 7-5 season. Thank goodness it’s almost over. 3 or 4 more interceptions and we can end this experiment.

Look for UCF to gash UGA’s undersized 3 man d line with the run. Don’t know why UGA went to the 3-4 after losing 3 dl’s to the NFL. 3 undersized DL going up against 5-6 blockers, do the math.

Everyone knows that the only game that really matters to the UGA faithful is the one with GT and we continue to plaster them every year. I will enjoy knowing that GT and CPJ are well aware that the bloom is off the rose and that the record lately is 7-9 over two years and two bowls. This proves that GT is a downtrending program and the KING of the Triple Option just got shown how you do it, by mighty AF.
bwwwwwwwwwwAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA
PS FOX news caster Harris Faulkner two nights ago mentioned in her 6PM FOX broadcast that the AF mascot falcon got lost for awhile but that “it did not stop AF from BEATING GT”, she said. AAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA
This is a successful year because GT was smoked again in their bowl and we put them in their place….. AGAIN!!

1. How many coaches would take UCF’s quarterback over Murray? Out of 120 D-1 teams, you could probably get less than 5 coaches to do that.
2. How many coaches would take their college quarterback over Murray for 2011? My guess, is the number could be counted on one hand, two at the most.
3. To those anti-Dog fans who posted the declining records of the last few years, have you ever heard of bottoming out. UGA did that this year, will be headed back up this season.
4. Dream Team looks like a reality. Finally will put the UGA talent on a more even level with Florida, Bama, and LSU. Those schools have outmanned the Dogs the last few years with the game-changing 5 star recruits. Georgia has been doing battle with 3 and 4 star athletes with a smaller number of 5 stars than the SEC schools at the top. Look for that disparity to begin to end in February.

Heck you could take just about any SEC team, ranked or not, and beat Oregon, Boise St, TCU, and the list goes on. Look at Ohio State if you have any questions about the overated teams of the other conferences. The rebuilding that would have to take place if Richt was fired would be catastrophic. Those of you who are fickled fans please go find another team to support. Get on the Auburn band wagon like everyone else.

I like Mark Richt. I support him. I do think he is crazy as hell to not go out and hire a true OC. But I am sick and tired of reading posts that imply that criticism of Richt makes one a little less of a Dawg fan, than folks who kiss his ass!
He ain’t Saban. Or Myer. Or even Miles.
He can’t beat UF, unless he has 3 of the top 30 picks in the NFL draft on his offense (’07 – and not counting freshman AJ Green).
We can’t even be assured of beating Vandy, KY, and others that used to be sure fire wins for UGA. Lately, the only new “1sts”, that Richt’s teams have accomplished generally are bad ones:
1st UGA team to lose to Miss State in what, 20+ years?
1st UGA team to lose a homecoming game to KY, ever?
1st UGA team to lose 4 in a row since, the Goff era?
1st UGA coach to lose to three different coaches? (soon to be 4!)
1st UGA coach to not beat a winning team in a season?
Richt goes 6-6 and states, “no staff changes.”
He is the SEC coach with the longest tenure, yet he hasn’t even sniffed a SEC East title in 5 years.
He got beat by a pathetic Colorado team who then lost 7 straight games, and whose coach got fired before the season was over.
He and his staff made almost $1 Million per win in 2010. Good job, boys.
And, by the way, I am as big a UGA fan as there is anywhere.

And he needs to allow Grantham and Coach T to do whatever it takes to show the spoiled brats Georgia has recruited that they have to work to stay and play.

Lemay and his questionable character? I’m sorry, but we already have a QB and backup…third string ain’t helping with 6-6. Our recruiting will be the downfall of Richt. I think he has the talent to coach, but he can’t get a lot of talent to come to Athens to work with. Before any of you start off on oh he got x-number of first round picks, there are a lot of schools who generate a lot of first round picks that don’t win titles (OSU comes to mind) or finish with losing records when they lose top level players (Texas this year). It happens elsewhere, but we don’t aren’t at the recruiting level of those schools, so more extended downtimes are expected.

Odd that 7-6 is “albeit barely” a winning season, but apparently 6-7 would not be “albeit barely” a losing season.
When somebody speaks about having a winning season, is it not inferred that it was barely? Isn’t that the point of saying…. a winning season. Nobody refers to 10-3 as a winning season even if that is also the case. “albeit barely” was making an albeit redundant point.
UGA recruiting in 2008 and 09 and the FIX
December 30th, 2010
6:20 pm
UGA last year and the prior year before last, did not produce solid recruiting. 2009 was in particular very bad. We signed about 17 kids and they are just fair. That class was ranked in the top 20s. The prior year included Marlon Brown and one or two others, like Brandon Smith and Ealey that inflated the ranking for 08. These last two in particualr have really not done a thing for UGA yet, beyond Brandon’s SC TD scamper in 09. His fumbles have hurt us more than he has helped us. See KY in 09. Ealey also hurt us with his 09 AND his 2010 fumbles that have driectly led to about 5 UGA losses. He did however, play well in the GT game in 09, he did quite well . He has badly hurt UGA with his off the field antics too.
In the frosh class from two years back, the only kid that has delivered so far is Aaron Murray, who will be a red shirt soph in 2011. He is it in that class of 2008. The rest were apparenlty vastly over rated.
So, in conclusion, UGA and Richt have not delivered solid recruiting in about 4 or 5 years.
That fact is why we were awful in 09 and again in 2010 and why we may be awful in 2011. UGA has not gone after BIG BOYS for BOTH lines of scrimmage and we are seeing the direct result of that reality. We cannot run nor can we stop the run. THIS is why UGA is so awful. Fix this and UGA will be fine.
I see a track meet vs UCF or is it FIA or is it USF?? UGA 32-29 UCF

Aside from your obvious lack of knowledge about college football and the nature of polls….wouldn’t that also not be true of the last 2 coaches of preseason #1 SEC teams?

Anyone think that UGA would go grab the Fridge? He supposedly IS an offensive minded coach and with a year or two recruiting, he might be just what we need.
Bobo? Oh, he can coach QBs ……………. or he can leave UGA because …………….no one else ………………no one else has even bothered to contact him, nor has his name even been in the rumor mill, he is so bad. THAT says it all.
Ralph Friegden would be an immediate Offensive side up grade for UGA.

It is a strange year for college football coaches
December 30th, 2010
6:40 pm
If McGarity sees a lethargic UGA squad and we lose the Liberty, would he pull the plug on CMR right in the middle of recruiting? One year lost due to a sudden firing does not make a university. See Auburn. TT got canned and then Coach AL Capone came in, had his one break in year in 09 and then, went out and a had a fabulous class and look at them now. It happens all over college football folks. See Maryland.
MR being dumped after a Liberty Bowl loss? McGarity I think, has seen all that he wants to see and now might make us ready to reenergize all spring and summer for Boise State with a decision. UGA loses and it could SUDDENLY be very, very ugly for the bulk of UGA’s coaching staff.
Frankly, while viewing the last WSB TV show with Chuck Dowdle and CMR, Richt’s eyes I thought were very telling. He looked exhausted and like a big case of BURN OUT. He looked like he had just had THE TALK with AD McGarity to me. He could not make eye contact with Dowdle. If I am wrong ………………….then I am wrong.
Just a thought.

I can’t even begin to understand how pathetic and empty a persons life has to be when he repeatedly posts on a rival teams message board just to spread delusional lies.
I wonder if it takes a lifetime of failure and being lauged at by everyone around them for these guys to sink to that point or are they just sociopaths? I can understand rivalry but most of the sad sacks don’t have a team they support. I guess its easier and safer for them to just bash the teams happier people who have friends and loved ones like to support. I have been told many of the haters posting here are secretly fans of a certain trade school located in a really bad part of atlanta but I’m not sure if that is true.
Anyway since my own life is a happy one full of people who care for me and that I love I truly hope you miserable pitiable guys manage to make it through this holiday season. UCF is in the top 30 defensive teams in the country by playing who? The QB is talented and will make some plays. The only way UGA loses this game is by turning the ball over 4 times. Keep B Smith on the defensive side of the ball and don’t let him near a punt return or kick off return. UGA needs to pass first then mix in some draws and screen plays to off set the rush. We don’t have a dominate running back so we are a pass first then run team. Unless UCF runs the triple option or wing t formation I don’t see them racking up a lot of yardage. UGA 35 UCF 17.

richt will be signing his new contract after next year when the dogs win the east and in the hunt for a national title and all you tech fans can sream fire richt for at least another 7 years..haha
UGA will crush UCF and Boise ST simply because of the talent level in the SEC is so much better. the young dawgs will be jr an srs next year with some very talented red shirt sophs as well to pretty much beat any team they face next year.
by the way joe the bulldogs were 8-5 last year and 10-3 the year before and 11-2 the year before that. next year will be the beginning of a few more sec titles and possible national titles in the next 3 years.
UGA future is looking really bright. with the one of the top 7 coaches in all of college football secured and another top 10-5 recruiting class coming in. im a liking what im a seeing ; )

News flash – Murray was The University of Florida’s MVP for this years FL/GA game. As far as surpassing any Stafford or Shockley records, those guys were winners, Murray – big disapointment. The only thing Murray will be remembered for is leading UGA to the their worst season in modern history.
News Flash for Orange10

10:04 am
Murray played very well and he is on track to be one of the best qbs to ever play at Georgia. He did outstanding considering he had NO rushing attack in his offense plus the defense was terrible.
Its not Murrays fault that Georgia has the crappiest defense $750,000 can buy.
It’s not Murrays fault that Washout fumbled the ball on two game winning drives that more than likely would have led to UGA wins.
It’s not Murrays fault that the Georgia defense got toasted by Ryan Mallet on that passing play to choke in the Arkansas game.
It’s not Murrays fault that idiot Bobo called a HORRIBLE set of plays in overtime of the Georgia/Florida game.
It’s not Murrays fault that he passed for THREE touchdowns in the FIRST QUARTER against #1 Auburn ON THE ROAD but his defense let them come back.
This season’s failures have nothing to do with quarterback play. Look at Murrays stats, the kid is breaking school records as a freshman. Murray didn’t have a running game, or defense this year and if you don’t have neither of those ANY qb will struggle in the SEC.

Dooley seems like a young coach with a future but I didn’t particularly notice him demonstratively showing any more “fire” than any other of the coaches on the sidelines this bowl season. Less than some, more than others. Not sure what your gauge is. Safe to assume any young coach in his first years on a new job is going to bring some energy, but that would be true of anybody TN would have hired. I did notice his kids jumped up and showboated after an awful lot of plays. I don’t think they scored a single time without a very blatant display (beyond what was a penalty in other games). That’s not freshman mistakes. It seemed pretty condoned by his staff. May we assume that you are a fan of that?

Joey, I honestly have never one time in here heard anybody every say that criticising he coach made you “less of a fan”, not by anyone serious anyway. I have though heard countless times heard folks proactively defending themselves against such a claim. As if they felt like they needed to. Any reason for that? Commentors who choose not to simply repeat the hyper-negative boring and lazy banter in here get called name WAY more often that those that do, trust me. Don’t even try to put up that straw man.
There are however plenty of occasion when folks try to debate comments that seem unfair or overly simplistic to them, if not downright inaccurate. That’s all just opinion either way of course.

And to answer your question about why anybody would have reason to expect 9-10 wins next year: Simple……..just basic math.
If Uga wins today, which I expect they will, they will have finished up winning 6/8 of thier last games. I would think any reasonable person would accept that if you were looking at some indication of what a team is going to do next season, the way they finished the previous season would be a pretty good place to start. So simple math, .75 is 9.75 victories. And I would say the past 8 games is a pretty fair representation of the 2011 schedule.
Add to that that UGA as literally 7 points away from winning 3 more games (10 games) this year, while none of the wins were close, so the percentages just simply work in thier favor.
Add to that the damage to the record was during the very first games of new defense under a completely new defensive staff that had never worked together, and a QB making his first appearances in a college game, why would you NOT expect the record to be better next year?

Question # 1 – Will the Dawgs be ready to play hard, or will they be like some of our posters on here and think it’s only UCF? If the former, we win; if the latter we lose.
Question # 2 – Will our defense play aggressively, or will we sit back and watch a freshman QB pick us apart?
Question # 3 – Will we play all four quarters, or will we wilt at the end?
Question 3 4 – Which team really wants this game the most?
While this game should be a lock for the Dawgs based on the talent levels, these questions cause real concern.

People who dog out Aaron Murray are idiots. The offense scored 30 or more points 6 times vs. Div. I opponents, including Florida and Auburn. When you can score 30 points or more, you are doing what you need to do to as an offense win games. It not Murray’s fault that the defense can’t keep opponents out of the freakin endzone or force a 3 and out! There is nothing but 3 star nobodies on that side of the fall. Its not Murray’s fault that Mark Richt and Co. have not built a team around him to be more successful.Aaron Murray AS A FRESHMAN is the engine that makes this offense go! Am not even angry. Totally numb. Georgia Tech at least tried in bowl defeat. My Dawgs mailed this one in against an obviously inferior team! Knew Mark Wretch set groundwork for failure when he chose FG over first down on fourth and millimeters play. Over! Game, set and match. It was obvious Dawg HC had no intention of spoiling UCF season. Congratulations Wretch. You succeeded! Only UGA season in toilet with losing mark! So very unhappy MR is returning. May even bail on Dawg football! I am that unhappy. Truly sad state of affairs after being tried and true Dawg fan for over half a century. Will never be MR fan again! This was beneath contempt. Like Falcons losing to Pee Wee squad. It was that damn disgraceful! STENDEK

Dear Mr. McGarity,
Time to pull the trigger. CMR is finally ready to do mission work, which is his calling. Offer SOS a four-year contract and get a stud coach-in-waiting as a coordinator. It’s too late to get Muschamp and that is a shame. But there are several young coaches out there who could learn under SOS and move into the job when he’s ready to retire. And he could keep GA players home. It’s past time.

Can you believe that guys like Justin Houston, Trinton Sturdivant, Brandon Boykin, Cordy Glenn and others are actually thinking about entering the draft??? Are you kidding me!!! These clowns are on a 6-7 team and they think they have to the stuff to play in the NFL. Put down the pipe fellas and get in the real world. Houston is the most overrated defensive player since Brandon Miller and ‘Mudcat’ Elmore.
Forget what Mel Kiper tells you… I’m telling you to get your arse in the weight room, study a ton of film and pretend to be a SEC caliber football player first! What a bunch of pansies!!!

I was willing to give Richt the benefit and allow him to cash in his credits, but after todays performance I’m now convinced Mark Richt can not turn this ship around. We don’t have the talent on this team going into 2011 to expect cataclysmic shift in the program. As fans we are deluding ourselves if we think Bacarri Rambo is suddenly going to learn how to tackle in 2011. We are deluding ourselves if we think this defensive line is going to become a major force next year. We are deluding ourselves if we think we’re not going to have more off field screw-ups under this current staff. We deluding ourselves if we think the offensive play calling is going to become less predictable.
This season was an utter failure… not since Ray Goff have I seen a team this poorly coached.

stendek ,
why is UCF an inferior team? I guess all the teams that beat Ga this year were inferior? The reality is the past couple of years are beginning to show your true colors. A not really very relevant program in the SEC. All Georgia is right now is a potential upset team. Next year Tennessee will be Much better, Florida should be about the same as this year (better than Uga) and South Carolina will compete. Once again putting the classless dogs 3rd in the East.

Dawgtiltheend…are you proud that you are 9-1 against Tech? You should bve 10-0 and event that wouldn’t be a great accomplishment.
I’m not knocking Tech, I’m simply saying that a state run school with the ability to recruit like you do, you should NEVER lost to Tech. That’s what is wrong with your underachieving school…you set your bar too low.

I’m so steamed , I can barely contain myself . Excuses can be made by the coaching staff at UGA , but truth be told , they’re all gonna be lame just like the 2010 dawgs . No more sugar coating , no more glosing over the facts , Mark Richt has taken our once proud and reveled program to the toilet and covered us with a brown stained piece of toilet paper . I am not proud , CMR , if he has any sense of decency or honor should return a substantial portion of his salary due to nonperformance ( shame there is’nt that clause in his contract ) I don’t know the answer to our dilema , but the solution certainly does’nt seem to ly with Coach Mark Richt

Something that is soo sad is that Mark Richt is like a lost child wandering in the woods calling for his mama ,not having a clue what the hell to do to reverse the misfortunes of UGA Foottball It’s a pathetic situation and the man isto be pitied.

Can Dogs avoid first losing season in 14 years?
I reckon not, seeing as how this was the very last game of the year and it was their seventh loss of the season. Imagine how downcast that Tech must feel, losing to a team that lost to Central Florida. Alas, the shame of it all! Football is so very important! Someone check and see if the sky is falling. I would stay and grieve longer but I need to get some sleep.
