Notes from Memphis: Sturdivant, others face decisions on future

MEMPHIS – Three items to start the day:

  • Georgia offensive tackle Trinton Sturdivant, who started six games this season after missing almost all of the previous two seasons because of knee surgeries, is undecided on whether to enter the 2011 NFL draft or return for another year with the Bulldogs.

“I don’t have a clue,” he said Tuesday. “We’ll just see how everything plays out. We’ll see after the bowl game how it looks. . . . I haven’t really weighed all my options with my family.”

Sturdivant described his 2010 season as “all right” but “no All-American type year.” Mark Richt put it this way: “He’s had a good season. Hopefully he’ll come back and have a great season next year.”

Sturidvant said he feels “very close” to regaining the pre-injuries form that made him a season-long starter at left tackle as a freshman in 2007.

“At first, there was a little issue with, ‘Oh, is he going to fall into the mental battle?’” Sturdivant said. “But now I’m at the end of the season, and I’m feeling good, just going all out.”

  • Richt said Tuesday that none of Georgia’s underclassmen who are considering the NFL draft have told him whether they are going or staying.

“Even if they knew in their heart what they were doing, I don’t think they’ll say anything until after the [Liberty Bowl] game,” Richt said. “And from what I understand, I don’t know if anybody’s going to be ready that moment.

“There might be a couple who know they’re staying, but I think the guys that are thinking about going … they’re going to want a little time to reflect with their families after the bowl game.”

Georgia’s draft-eligible underclassmen include: wide receiver A.J. Green, a likely top-10 pick who just about everyone assumes will go; offensive linemen Sturdivant and Cordy Glenn; outside linebacker Justin Houston; cornerback Brandon Boykin; punter Drew Butler and kicker Blair Walsh. All of those players have asked the NFL’s underclassmen advisory board for a projection of their draft stock – except Green, who doesn’t need anybody to tell him he’s projected to be a first-round pick. The others expect responses from the NFL board by next week.

The NFL deadline for underclassmen to enter the draft is Jan. 15, but the Georgia players are generally expected to announce their decisions by the start of spring-semester classes on Jan. 10.

  • Green, suspended the first four games this season for selling last year’s Independence Bowl jersey, had little reaction to the NCAA’s suspension last week of five Ohio State players for the first five games of next season for selling memorabilia and/or receiving discounts on tattoos. The NCAA is allowing the Ohio State players to play in the Sugar Bowl.

“They know best; that’s their job,” said Green, referring to the NCAA. “I’m not going to question them.”

Your season next year is not looking promising. How can you be better this year without AJ, Houston, and Boykin. Your program is in big trouble and CMR will be lucky to keep his job next year. Tech on the other hand should be much improved! Look for T. Washington to have a big year. Go Jackets!!!! Oh….and there’s no way you get the Crowell kid. He goes to Bama…..

With the exception of Greems, and, possibly Houston, all of these kids would benefit more if they stayed in school for another year. Especially with the uncertainty concerning the NFL season right now. They will only get better and go higher in the draft. Would be great to see UGA’s develop the kind of loyalty we see at other schools where players who could leave early decide to stay.

Haha…Nerd Central…wow, you sure know how to self rationalize a sub-par program. Didn’t you just lose to Air Force? Hasn’t Tevin Washington thrown 3 game ending interceptions (including Va Tech)? Why can’t you sell out your stadium? Why are you still living at home with your parents? All valid questions for you to answer.

Richt has created a declining program that the current players can’t wait to get away from. Richt had better start worrying about how he is going to min the East without all of these players. Whenever any players from the 2010 class, or even the 2009 class who have not seen playing time yet are mentioned,it’s always ” he has a long way to go”. If a redshirt is not ready to contribute by next season, then a scholarship is being wasted. The days of waiting around three years for players to become SEC ready are gone. Championship teams are getting more and more out of incoming freshmen and redshirts these days. It is much more important to ready this program for 2011 than worry about this joke of a bowl game that Richt has UGA in. He should start what ever players that he really feels will replace these that are jumping to NFL. It is hard for me to believe that Richt does not know how hot his seat is. McGarity will not be the one making the decision on Richt’s future. The money people have been relatively quiet thus far, but that is about to change.

I agree Columbus Dawg–I am not sure the coaches in Athens know what a game ready kid is right now… Murray was way ahead of them game wise. One thing that really worries me is, kids look better as freshman than as sophmores. I think Richt said it best in an interview–”old habits are hard to break”….well its time to break in a new philosophy in Athens.

Early departures to the NFL are a major problem at UGA. It seems CMR does nothing to encourage players to stay in school and win a Heisman or championship. UGA is just a training camp for the NFL, not a championship program anymore. We need some Tim Tebows instead of Staffords, Morenos, Currans etc.

Richt’s comments are very telling, to him it’s more important to avoid a losing season this year than to ready players that may save his job in 2011. I know that I will get flack from this but if Richt were serious about getting the disipline problem under hand, he would suspended Green for at least two more games after the NCAA was through with him. There will be kind of an unspoken zero tolerance for disiplinary issues for 2011 in the minds of the money people. UGA has been embarrassed more this year than any other, maybe with the exception of the Jan Kemp thing years ago. I wondered what Dooley was thinking when he named Damon Evans AD to begin with. This will be McGarity’s first preseason with the Dawgs, and all of the Bulldog meetings leading up to the 2011 season will undoubtedly present pointed questions about the direction of the program, and Richt had better take these questions seiously if he really wnats to remain at UGA. I saw where he said that he hopes he is still there to coach against Ohio State in ten years. I hate to make depressing predictions, but if Richt does not beat Boise and South Carolina, the drums will start beating loudly imediately.

sogadawg… your an idiot!!! Don’t you realize when players are projected to go 1st round… they would be stupid to stay? What is CMR going to say to AJ? “Come on AJ, pass up millions of dollars in guarenteed money and risk injury to come back and help us win a few games”…. Put yourself in those 1st round pick’s shoes. As for other players trying to see where they draft stock is at…. if you could make it to the league wouldn’t you know where you might end up? It doesn’t mean they are leaving just evaluating themselves…

PS. Georgia Tech is horrible this year and will be horrible next year. They have no passing game for late 4th quarter drives so they will lose every game they are behind in the 4th quarter. CMR wins a Sugar Bowl and TWO SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS and we have a couple of down years and people are ready to throw him off the bus… I can’t wait til next year when we go 10-2 and people will still be saying CMR is in the hot seat. Nobody wins the National Championship every year!!!

Boykin would be a possible 1st-2nd round pick this season. If he returns he would be a solid 1st rounder. He plays the run strong and has enough coverage skills to play in the NFL. His value will be the return game. Once NFL exec’s see he highlight real and his measurables they will vault him to the top of the CB board.

It now looks like Green, Houston and Boykin will leave. It is going to be a interesting season in Athens next year.

I’ve got news for you Mark, 10 and 2 may or may not save Richt next year, it depends on how it unfolds. If 10 and 2 is good enough to get to Atlanta, then okay, and with UF bringing in a new coach, and folks, South Carolina is still South Carolina it may be. I don’t see the “Tennesee will be world beaters in 2011″ crowd being anything but an overly optimistic bunch at this point. Richt faces more problems than just improving the record in 2011. If he does not stand up and proclaim that the disipline problems are not going to be tolerated, whether it is by breaking the law, or academics, or whatever, then he will not survive it. I am not going to sit here and condemn A.J. for going out and getting a large NFL contract, I am saying that Richt has better worry about UGA’s football program and not Green’s future there. It is that all of these unready players are wanting to jump ship that bothers most Georgia people.

I am not a huge fan of the players leaving early, but you have to look at it from the perspective of the level of players willing to commit to the University. Elite athletes no matter the school will leave early. I applaud the coaching staff for the ability to get the players in the door, now go do something with the dang talent when its here. It is unfair to blame the players when they have the option to leave early. The coaches have got to do a better job with the talent.

If you answered yes—get off the kids—they are doing what is best for them and their family. The game has changed—adapt and over come. Play the best players on your team—early. The limitations of Johnson’s approach are coming home to roost at TECH. Big time college players are simply not going to go to a place that depends on a scheme that has no relevance outside of a few programs in college. Also, the ACC teams have seen it and played against it enough that it is no longer a big mystery. Yeah, TECH gained 500 yards or something against UGA. BUT they lost that game and got the yards as a result of UGA scoring quickly and TECH time of possession. If you lose after your team gains 500 yards on another team there is a problem.

UGA will be fine, with or without Richt. I think he will turn it around but if he does not UGA is one of the premeir coaching jobs in the game and won;t have a problem. I’ll preempt the arguments of the idiots and point out why UGA will always provide one of the better coaching opportunities in the country: the number of recruits in the state of Georgia. It can be argued UGA has not done a great job finding the right ones or coaching up the ones they get, but the recruits will always be there.

Coaching does matter and I think Richt will get it done. If he does not someone else almost certainly will. So, UGA’s present State of the Program is still light years above that of TECH. There is certainly more talent in Georgia than Alabama year in and out, and Georgia does not have to compete with Miami, Florida State and several other legitimate programs in Florida for home grown talent. This year was a perfect storm of bad luck and circumstance at UGA. Oh, and they still beat TECH.

As a side note the Miami Hurricanes in 2004 had 7 1st round picks. Plenty were underclassmen. In 2005 they went 9-3. If this program cannot withstand the loss of 3 players who leave early then it is a larger indictment of where CMR and company are really at.

Tech ran all over us this year( yes, we won) and Air Force holds them to 7. We love to throw, and no one PROVEN that can catch is returning. Our OL could not push a tired, undersized Tech defense out of the way on fourth and one for a first down late in the game. This staff has no imagination or willingness to shake the offense up. Also, we have 20 departing seniors and 4 or 5 juniors who are contemplating not playing out their eligibility like Tanner Strickland. Mark, stay away from the eggnog. UGA will go 11-1 next year? UGA couldn’t win 11 games next year if they were playing UGA. This team lacks talent, coaching, and discipline. It starts at the top, and works it’s way down to the players. Coaches don’t work hard, players don’t practice hard, and that equals no wins on saturdays. These coaches can’t recruit, they can’t evaluate talent when recruiting, and they can’t design a game plan that utilizes the talent they do have. And god help if they have to make adjustments at the half of a big game. A prime example of how they can’t evaluate talent in state: 3 of the defensive player of the year awards to high school players in ga per the ajc. signed with Tenn. and Bama. UGA signed guys that made the team, but weren’t players of the year in their classification. Those players are A.J. Johnson, and Brain Randolph who committed to Tenn, and Shannon Brown who committed to Bama. Just shows you that these clowns coaching at UGA have no clue when it comes to recognizing talent. Tenn. has better coaches, and they are killing UGA on in state talent, not to mention Auburn, and Bama. this dream class, is just thay a big DREAM!! 11-1, that might be the biggest DREAM of all

Neither one of them did squat for UGA. In the day, back in the 50s, Johnny Rauch was a record setting UGA QB and he did nothing for UGA.

IF UGA does not develop a powerhouse rushing team and augment that with a nice passer and a solid, hard nosed, aggressive D team ………………………we will wander in the desert for years and years.

Richt is stubborn and he will like Bowdon, pay the ultimate price. Bowdon, at least was 85 years old. Richt has lost his edge …………….look at his eyes when Chuck Dowdle and he do that WSB Mark Richt show. Richt is a case of BURN OUT.

Scholarships are 1 year deals and renewed each year by the school and the player. If the school and the NCAA cared so much, they would put these kids under contract for 4 years. College is nothing more than a farm program for the NFL and I don’t blame any kid for leaving at the end of 3 years to make money. Every program that attrachs tog notch kids deals with this. Guys leaving early can be good and bad. It hurt UGA in that it’s left us very young in key positions. Few teams have a lot of success without plenty of upperclassmen in the first 22. At the same time, recruiting becomes even harder if guys stay for all their years of eligibility. This year is a good example, Tim (or anybody who knows) correct me if I’m wrong here. We have 84 scholarship players, we lose 15 to graduation, and we currently have 16 verbals. That makes 85 for next year. Since we are piling on UGA today let me give some additional bad news about the upcoming 2011 season. Richard Samuel who we are all counting on as being a top LB has constant swelling in his knee and is not practicing. This is not good. Also, CMR is thinking about moving Bean Anderson back to OL. Are we that thin now on offensive line???? I hate to see this about my dawgs but I’m worried. Could UGA be 3-8 next year??

AJ may be the only NFL ready underclassman at UGA and being a top five projected pick means a lot of money he could end up in Detroit with Matthew Stafford. If so I would hope they could produce better than they did at UGA. No matter the price for going early is steep if a good NFL team doesn’t trade for the early rounders and they are drafted by the loser of the NFL and wind up taking a beating like Stafford has this year. Sure the money is good but…..is it a pipe dream? Look at where Quincy Carter, David Green, and DJ Shockley went in the NFL and where they are today.

I would like to see the college welfare system go from a 4 year ticket to a two year that would allow the players to earn one year extentions or be cut from the team if they can’t meet expectations on and off the field.

Boykin and A.J. should leave early. They are the only 2 that are ready. I don’t think Houston is going to translate as well to the league. I love Justin and he’s been a terrific player at UGA, but it’s more because of his hard work and determination than an actual skill set. I’m not saying that he can’t play in the league, but he should come back to increase his status. A.J. is obvious, but Brandon is also highly skilled and trust me when I say that he will be highly coveted by NFL execs.. Trinton probably is the 2nd most talented Dawg behind A.J., but he simply needs to show the GMs that he is all the way back. He should come back. I want them all back, but if I’m being honest to my players, I tell A.J. and Brandon to leave and everyone else to get back on the Dawg Bus.

It is frustrating to see so many UGA underclassmen being considered as possible early draft picks when their college careers have been so unimpressive. Are we to have 3 linemen (2 underclassmen) drafted from a unit that was frequently overmatched? Who knew that we had an NFL worthy DB? Butler and Walsh are excellent kickers, but have we used their skills to change the course of any game?

This potential exodus is not confined to this season. During home games, there is a “Bulldogs in the NFL” segment displayed on the scoreboard. Many of the players had very nondescript careers in Athens, but they are good enough to play pro ball.

We have too much talent to have so few victories.

I personally don’t think UGA is in BIG TROUBLE. That’s my opinion. One thing I know for certain is that there is no shortage of idiot bloggers..wether they be GT nerds posting about UGA or not…. JB, UGA finished #10 in the nation in 2008. This my friend is not below UGA standards. UGA is the 11th winningest program of all time so #10 is exactly UGA standards. 8 and 5 or 7 and 6 and out of top twenty is below UGA standards. So, we just completed year 2 of down period. If you are going to be negative all the time at least get your facts straight. UGA under CMR is above UGA standards overall. Give the man a chance to get it back, he has earned it.

I do find it hard to understand why people want to leave early. If there were a coaching change or something like that maybe but just to leave for the money, where is the loyalty. As far as Green I think he owes UGA another year after what happened at the first of the year, after all he knew he was doing wrong. There is a lot of what ifs in this years team. In my opinion we should have won the East and could have won the SEC. The next big question is how will this effect the recruiting this year. We need a huge year in that area. We shall see.

Terry

bruce mac

and 1 is reasonable. CMR has done very well when he has the QB. His offense is centered around having a great talent at the QB position. For the first time in 3 years he has what he needs to be successful on the offensive side of the ball. There is no 3 – 4 defense in the country that succeeds without a huge presence in the middle. We will have that in 2011 and it will change everything. I would bet the pay check on both of these two facts and our special teams are the best in the country. That is logical and reasonable. Keep the faith.

How is it that UGA ALWAYS has several to head to the NFL every season…I believe to, in a situation as Green breaking the rules being suspended as well as any others (ohio, Newton), if you used your scholarship, then you should have to honor it…a player as green, should not be allowed to go to the next level due to the fact he did not hold up his end of the deal accepting the scholarship…( an injury, is a different aspect, no prob. with that,) The ncaa and the NFL need to get on the same page and Not Allow an undergraduate that has violated the rules as these boys did, and not allow them to be able to play in the NFL the following yr. They could be drafted but ineligible to play the next season….something has got to be done to stop all of this and the doulbe standards the ncaa put out there….they are a joke regarding the ohio and newton incidents…ncaa you are a joke, once respected by me…not anylonger….sad….

“I haven’t really weighed all my options with my family.”. Yeah, right. If you believe that tripe, you probably voted for U-Know-Who. It’s really “how much money can I make if I go now, or (God forbid) should I grace the team with my presence for another year…provided, of course, I remain healthy. HuH? What’s that? The Escalade I ordered is in? Wow, OK…Uh, adios Dogs.

@KnowYourRole……no question here that Green will make it in the pros. But if he is going for the $, will waiting a year, when there is no strike looming, yield a greater bottom line contract? A lot of variables here, i.e., the strike, who is likely to pick him up this year vs. next year (and their payroll room), and who is the competition in the position in his position this year vs. next year. I imagine someone has done the research in this. I’m just suggesting that the boon might be greater if he waits.

A. J. Green HAS to be Georgia’s best receiver ever– since he is the best receiver who every played in the SEC!

@k483….1 in the hand is worth 2 in the bush. he is a sure fire top 5 pick. is it possible that he would be 1-4 next year? sure, but is it worth the risk of injury? i think he is gonna make bank regardless. heck, i enjoyed my 4 years of college, but then again i wasn’t an elite athlete who could make millions playing a sport.

@KnowYourRule……I don’t know, is 1 in the hand worth 2 in the bush when your “birds” are multi-year, 7 figure contracts? If he goes as the first receiver this year in a receiver-heavy draft, that might mean an x-year contract worth y, with a signing bonus of z, whereas he waits a year and goes in a receiver-light draft, and gets 1.2x, 1.3y, 1.4z, etc. Not saying that would happen, I just wonder if from a purely financial standpoint it is the best move, even considering the risk of injury.

@k483….i don’t know what kind of financial situation aj’s family is in, but if it was me, i would want the money now. receiver-heavy draft or not, he will be the first reciever picked. if a GM pick’s another reciever before him in this draft, he should be fired.

SuperB please pass me some of what you are smoking. Green doesn’t even lead Receiving stats at UGA so how can he be the best ever in the SEC. Green doesn’t even rank in the top 10 is the SEC by a long shot.
Wes Chandler
Don Hutson
Ozzie Newsome
Carlos Alvarez
Terry Beasley
Wendell Davis
Ike HillardTim Mcgee
Jabar Gaffney
David Palmer
Those are the TOP 10 all-time SEC receivers. You actually think AJ Green is even close to any of those guys? AHAHAHH
AJ Green’s ranking in the SEC
08 #37
09 #59
10 #71
And again you think AJ Green is the best to ever play in the SEC? AHHAHAHAHHAH
Please pass me some of what you are smoking.

Let me state the obvious….

A.J. Green=Gone
Justin Houston=Dallas Cowgirls
Brandon Boykin=Gone
Cordy Glenn=Stay
Trinton Sturdivant=Obviously stay if you want to be drafted at all.
Drew Butler=Obvious Stay but is one of the best punting prospects ive ever seen
Blair Walsh=Obvious Stay but his leg is NFL approved. He and Butler will be the first Kicker/Punter selected in the draft if they go.

Trinton had better stay and get his degree. That would be his best choice for the future. He could have a good injury free season next year and improve his draft stock, which I feel is nonexistant now. Or he could declare for the draft, not get picked and lose his education. I hope for his sake he comes back.

Tech, if you are not gonna be competitive in any sport,(and at this time you’re NOT.) Then get out of athletics. That bowl game with air force was pathetic. I would rather watch Buford H.S. and some other good high school play each other. I was a G.Tech fan years ago but got so disgusted I jumped ship.

Dawg 1 you will see what it is like next year. Tech lost 4 very good and important underclassmen this year. we had 2 linemen go to different colleged for Grad school because they didn’t get into Tech. UGA will have a tough year next year at the start trying to find players to replace the players you may lose.

I just love reading what people post on here. You can tell the fake UGA fans. They are usually the ones who spell the players names incorrectly or call out games UGA will lose next year like the guys on page one who mentioned UGA will lose to Arkansas next year. Guess what idiot, UGA doesnt play Arkansas next year. Oh and then there is this so called UGA insider. You do know that they play 12 games in Division 1 football right? You claim that UGA could go 3-8 next year. Impossible when they play 12 games.

SOGADOG….you must be kidding me. A big time college coach trying to talk players out of going to the NFL. For what? Glory for the old red & black? If CMR tried that approach he would never win a recruiting battle against any opponent. Kent State would out recruit him in short order. He would also get fired for that kind of behavior.

Stay at UGA and most likely get arrested and suspended all while having another 6-6 or 7-5 season or go get locked out of the NFL? I’d rather be locked out of the NFL too.

In the 1986 Jan Kemp trial, O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for UGA, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”

That trial exposed UGA for the football factory that it was, and exposed Vince Dooley as a fraud and a sleazebag. It also derailed Dooley’s plans for a political career. That’s why we see the decrepit old fraud doing TV commercials even now.

Mark Richt is just the latest in a line of sleazy UGA coaches who coddle athletes and discard them after four years of football. He recruits illiterate morons he knows aren’t smart enough for college, but he doesn’t care, as long as they help him line his pockets with millions of dollars each year.

I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?

As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Will it never end? Apparently not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.

Interesting that Richt’s incompetence has led to such a level of disdain within the Bulldog Nation that the university can’t even sell its ticket allocation to the Liberty Bowl. They probably couldn’t even give them away. I don’t see too many folks traveling such a distance to watch the worst team in UGA’s long and storied history probably lose to lowly Central Florida. The Bulldog Nation expects the Dawgs to be playing the University of Florida, not the University of Central Florida. Nevertheless, I sense that da Preacha Man’s Koolaid isn’t working the wonders and causing such a euphoric state of hallucination as it has had over the past several years. Now that UGA will be losing big football revenue, the end is near for CEO Markt Wrecked and his Keystone Cops staff.

If AJ Green needs some money, he should talk to Cam Newton’s dad about floating a loan for a year while he gets some meat on his bones in the SEC another year. Mr Newton could hold AJ’s diamond earring studs as collateral. Then Mr Newton could act as AJ’s agent when negotiating for a pimpy salary with bonus in the NFL…
