MEMPHIS — Georgia and Ohio State have agreed to meet in football during the 2020 and 2021 seasons, UGA athletic director Greg McGarity said Tuesday.
McGarity said he and Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith signed a “memorandum of understanding” on the games, one of which will be played in Georgia’s Sanford Stadium and the other at Ohio State.
“I know that’s a long time away,” McGarity said, “but bottom line is you’ve got to have some of those things in place.”
He added: “Not all of the details are worked out as far as seats and things — just the memorandum that we would basically play each other, home and home, in ‘20 and ‘21.”
McGarity said it hasn’t been determined yet which year the game will be played at which site.
“We haven’t figured that out yet,” he said. “We know we’re going to play each other on campus, and we’ll figure all that stuff out in a year, two years. Who knows what the landscape will look like in 2020? But you’ve got to plan that far in advance to do things.”
McGarity said the games will come within “the first two weekends” of each season. “Before SEC play starts,” he said. “You don’t want to play Ohio State in the middle of your SEC season.”
A fuller contract will be drafted later.
McGarity said Georgia also reached out to Michigan, Notre Dame and Penn State about possible games. Michigan and Notre Dame were not interested, he said, and Penn State’s interest was not as strong as Ohio State’s.
McGarity’s scheduling philosophy generally is for Georgia to play seven home games per season, but he allows for an occasional — once a decade or so — exception to play a home-and-home series against a marquee opponent such as an Ohio State.
Georgia has never played the Buckeyes in a regular-season football game. The teams’ only meeting was in the Citrus Bowl in Orlando following the 1992 season. Georgia won that game 21-14.
“I think it will excite people to think of Ohio State between the hedges and for us to go up to Columbus,” McGarity said. “I think it’s something you can look forward to. All those 8-year-olds out there can look forward to playing in the game.”
Coach Mark Richt will look forward to the game, too.
“Yeah, man,” Richt said. “I hope I’m here to go to Columbus.”

Ohio State has not beaten any SEC teams recently, but the have played the best we have to send to the bowls. If UGA had played Ohio State the past five years our record would be 0-5 against Ohio State. Let’s get real about our team. It is a shame that the flagship university in the state with the most division 1 player per capita cannot field a championship team. It’s not that Georgia does not produce top players, it’s that we cannot keep them in this state. We need to recruit character not thugs. We need to get rid of Rodney Garner. He is in charge of bringing the players to our campus who play but show not character during the games or off field.

Admit it uGAg fans – Air Force’s defense outperformed the leghumpers! If GT’s special teams hadn’t handed AD the ball on a silver platter twice we would have won and broke the 5-game bowl losing streak.
We had a backup quarterback or we would have scored more than 7 points.
Meanwhile like for leghumpers to lose to Coach George O’Leary and UCF. Mark Richt couldn’t coach his way out of a paper bag, Coach Paul Johnson puts Saint Richt to shame!

This and opening up against Boise State next year doesn’t make any sense in terms of McGarrity’s philosophy that he brought with him from FLA on scheduling difficult OOC games. Let me ask again — why did we cancel the home and away series with Oregon? It must have something to do with financial reality sinking in is all I can think of. Ticket sales for the Liberty Bowl have been miserable and season ticket donations are way down (GA fans are voicing their displeasure with good teams performing at a mediocre level). Maybe McGarrity is hoping to find a way to excite the fan base once again.

RedDawg,
I agree with you. We were told that we canceled the Oregon series because McGarity wanted to get 7 home games loaded up with cupcakes. When in the SEC, I am one of the people who are ok with this, as long as we get a big time match up every 5 years or so.
Since that explanation was handed to us, we have schedules Boise State and Ohio State.
I was looking VERY forward for a chance to see the Pacific Northwest in Eugene, OR with my Dawgs.
Give McGarity time. I feel he has come at a time when the fans are restless. He will prove to know what he is doing I feel.

I think the Boise State thing was just right time right place type of instance. The Ohio St. series is ten years away, so that will be still in line with his philosophy. Don’t we also have a home and away with Clemsux coming up too? In a couple of years? I think they would be a more traditional rivalry match up than Oregon would be. I also believe that the long road trip is another issue that he was thinking about. I believe McGarity will be just fine as it turns out.

This is the recipe for a national championship. Who cares about Ohio State or Oklahoma State or Colorado?

Since there’s an awful lot of talk on these boards about what makes an acceptable non-conference schedule, I took the liberty of looking them up for the last 7 BCS champs. With a couple of exceptions, they seem pretty much like what UGA is trying to set up — three cupcakes and a decent team (that’s supposed to be you, Jackets). There is ONE interesting thing that keeps popping up. It shouldn’t take you long to figure it out:
Alabama (‘09) – Virginia Tech, Florida International, North Texas, Tennessee-Chattanooga
Florida (’08) – Hawaii, Miami, The Citadel, Florida State
LSU (’07) – Virginia Tech, Middle Tennessee State, Tulane, Louisiana Tech
Florida (’06) – Southern Miss, Central Florida, Western Carolina, Florida State
Texas (’05) – Louisiana-Lafayette, Ohio State, Rice [11 games]
USC (’04) – Virginia Tech, Colorado State, BYU, Notre Dame [11 games]
LSU (’03) – Louisiana-Monroe, Arizona, Western Illinois, Louisiana Tech [12 games]
Feel free to use this in future discussions instead of just randomly spouting out what should be a good schedule.

The funny thing here is UGA has not been a national contender for 30 years, yeah they had a little run in early 2000’s but even then they were ranked No.1 for 3 weeks and got blasted 3 times that year. Never Never even in the hunt and they think in 10 years they will be even decent enough to play an Ohio St. team who gets annually beaten against every other SEC school. Arkansas will spank up on The Buckeyes in the SUGAR Bowl. But the state of UGA football is so dismal it is embarrassing to live in the state of Georgia where you have to reniforce the fact that not all folks in Georgia are UGA fans. When talking to anyone from out of state the first thing they bring up is the UGA program and all the arrest, the AD and DUI and how long will Mark Richt be kept as head coach. Our immediate responses are, yeah UGA promotes the signing of thug players, the AD was in over his head and had a refillable bottle of viagra, and we all hope UGA keeps Mark Richt as head coach because the program he runs is so pathetic.
UGA is a program that has failed in every aspect and continues to fall in line with the banking system in Georgia, failure after failure and takeovers, but the takeovers are our Auburn Tigers, South Carollinas, Arkansas Razorbacks, Colorado Buffaloes, Mississippi St., and Florida Gators.
How many of you UGA fans are packing the sled and heading to Memphis? Less than 3000, less than 4000. Boy you guys pack the Stadium in Athens but do not travel well, but I guess after going 7-5 and 6-6 even some of you know that the program is suffering.

Why make our schedule harder, the SEC schedule is hard enough. You never did this at Florida, they always began with two cup cakes and still make the championship game. Ohio State is a traditional national power year in and year out. Let’s face it, U(6-6)GA is a second tier SEC East team that has fallen behind the likes of South Carolina, Arkansas and Mississippi State –on par with Kentucky and a reeling Tennessee program.
Seriously, U(6-6)GA should think twice about this type of scheduling. Now that the program has settled into mediocrity and 4-4 years in the SEC, playing teams like Ohio State will do nothing but lead U(6-6)GA down the road to .500 or sub-.500 seasons. Better stick with LA Lafayette, Tenn Tech and C Michigan.
You know it’s bad in Athens when the fanbase can’t find anything satisfying about the past season except for defeating a 6-7 Tech team. Program has slid backweards tremendously since 2008 –just like I said it would over two years ago.

First off its 0-9 in bowl games, I do believe in the regular season they have a winning record, so that looks good for OSU and not UGA. Secondly its 10 years away, so who cares, neither coach will probably be around or the AD’s. The players for that game probably don’t even play football yet. And OSU always schedules good non-conference games. Texas, USC, Miami (they were supposed to be), in the future Oklahoma, VT, Tennessee and Cal. Its nice to see the SEC finally scheduling a big name out of conference.

Wow, the bulldogs are growing some stones, little ones though, they are only playing a “marquee opponent” once a decade. Since Saban has taken over for Bama, we been playing a marquee team from out of conference every year. We have played FSU, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Penn State. Truthfully, GA will be better off playing the big teams every year instead of being scared of losing all of the time. Playing big games with out of conference schools every year will draw better recruits

Well Ryan YOU LITTLE MORON….UGA is probably the 8th best program in the conference now under your big boy MARK Richt. The program when he took over had stockpiles of talent left by Donnan and he has ruined it with a free run of athletes who have zero moral values. Go ahead and bring up Cam, but Cam is still playing and winning and now playing for the BCS title and the ring to go with it. You know, I became a resident of this state about 15 years ago, and I can tell you one thing for sure. UGA and GT fans are a sorry lot for the most part. Fair weather fans for sure. A little banter between rivals is healthy but when you start acting like 10 year old kids at a playground, it is time to take a good look at yourselves. When your team is having a bad stretch, you turn on them like a catholic priest at a muslim convention. UGA is down for sure, but show me one college football team that has not had a bad stretch or two in their history. Tech fans expect to compete on a consistent level against the big power house football teams out there with a much smaller pool of talent to draw from and when they don’t, the other team is a bunch of thugs or academic morons. Real mature talk folks. A true fan backs up his team through the good and bad times and does not resort to insulting another team when his /hers is down. A little maturity here folks.

GoldenRod is a NimRod! LMFAO!!! BCS prominence? LOL again! You went your only BCS bowl last year and got beat by Iowa. And what’s even funnier is that the ACC gets an automatic BCS bowl just for winning that weak ass conference….AND YOU GUYS HAVE ONLY DONE THAT ONCE!!! Then you can’t even beat a military academy in the bowl that you laughed at when UGA played in it. How poetic is that? VERY! Tech is a joke and they always will be. How’s that triple option working out for ya? LOL!

Goldenrod – don’t bother attempting to talk smack to these dawgtards. They all know there is a new sheriff in town and he will own UGaG and their new coach for years to come. I mean, Air Force’s defense is better than Granthem’s.
CPJ and CAG will make all things right, it’s just a matter of CPJ getting his recruits to run the Perfect Option. THWG, 45-42 hurts doesn’t it?

Auburn Rules….Come back on here next year at this time and crow about your 7-5 season cause w/out #2 you are a middle of the pack squad. Also, if you believe that Cam knew nothing about what daddy was doing and if you believe that Auburn did not pay for Cam’s play you are not as intelligent as you are trying to appear.

charleston jacket – you & Goldrenrod need to realize your beloved “new sheriff” is 1-2 vs. the Dawgs and 0-3 in Bowl games, averaging a dismal 8 points on offense per game.
45-42 doesn’t hurt quite as bad as 51-7 hurt you, especially since it was only 1 loss in 10 games.
Turkey Neck’s high-school gimmicky offense gets shut down each and every time the opponent has time to prepare, which includes every bowl game.
CPJ is a joke.

Hey this game could decide the National Champion within the first month of the season. I mean determine who has homefield advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
Ohio State HC Krik Herbstreit and UGA HC Kirby Smart should put on a great show.

If there’s one thing that Auburn’s season has taught me, it’s that anybody (within reason) can win a national championship.
Two years ago, they were’ playing in a bowl game, and now they’re playing for it all. If they can do it, anybody with resources and a strong fanbase can.

Ohio State isn’t afraid to play anybody…Look at their upcoming non-conference schedule. Don’t you think it’s odd that Florida, LSU or Auburn don’t ever schedule tough non-conference games. Even this game with UGA is a once in a lifetime home and home for Georgia fans. What other time in the past few years has Georgia scheduled a top tier program to play. Yes, they schedule Arizona State and Colorado, but they aren’t top tier. Ohio State does that every year. And, being from Ohio, I find it comical all the hate for Ohio State because no one in Ohio gives two craps about Georgia. Why would we…Georgia isn’t a threat. So, yeah, Ohio State lost a game by 7 points to Georgia 20 years ago in the Fish Under the Sea Bowl…Move on! Quit hanging on to past “glories”. Be honest with yourself Georgia fans, would you rather have a program like Ohio State’s right now (albeit without InkGate) or have Georgia’s program, which is a consistent 7-5 or 8-6 football team? Be realistic. Go Bucks!

As far as the Useless Nuts go bring them on! OSU Kyle you haven’t beaten us down so far and as far as a home field advantage. Don’t kid yourself. UGA games are always a sell out and the few tickets sent to the queer nut state won’t be enough to amount to anything.
Goldenrod you need to crawl back into the wood work where all insects belong!!! CPJ and his option are a joke. 6 -7, Air Force beat you North Avenue Trade School boys. Where is the power and scoring? No QB on that team can pass. Can’t wait to see Georgia State and Kennesaw take you down!

OSU in the ATL Go pack your bags and move on back to Ohio! The worthless nuts are there waiting on you. As far as out of schedule, who does OSU play? You don’t even have a conference championship. This year it was la 3 way tie I think. Isn’t that like kissing your sister or something? I think that’s the problem there too much in breeding! You don’t have a clue what real football is all about.

Dawg 23, once again, you prove the stereotype of the uneducated, near-sided SEC typical fan. You have no clue. Tell me this: when was the last time Georgia even played for the national title? Early ’80’s? Conference championship game—yeah, that’s coming next year, then what will you have to say? And inbred? Really, pal. Ohio? Ohio is a state where people actually work rather than spend 24/7 idolizing 18-20 years old kids. Ohio has more history, tradition and knowledge about football than you hilljacks will ever have. Oh, and one last thing: where do you think the winning coaches of the SEC learned how to coach…that’s right, Ohio. Meyer – OSU Miles – Michigan Saban – MSU (Note Richt isn’t in that list because he’s never won anything of note). Here are the steps you need to do: 1. Get out of your parent’s basement. 2. Go visit some other places other than Gilmer County. 3. Grab your banjo and tell your wife/sister you’re going on a trip to visit other cultures. Get some class
