MEMPHIS — Georgia and Ohio State have agreed to meet in football during the 2020 and 2021 seasons, UGA athletic director Greg McGarity said Tuesday.
McGarity said he and Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith signed a “memorandum of understanding” on the games, one of which will be played in Georgia’s Sanford Stadium and the other at Ohio State.
“I know that’s a long time away,” McGarity said, “but bottom line is you’ve got to have some of those things in place.”
He added: “Not all of the details are worked out as far as seats and things — just the memorandum that we would basically play each other, home and home, in ‘20 and ‘21.”
McGarity said it hasn’t been determined yet which year the game will be played at which site.
“We haven’t figured that out yet,” he said. “We know we’re going to play each other on campus, and we’ll figure all that stuff out in a year, two years. Who knows what the landscape will look like in 2020? But you’ve got to plan that far in advance to do things.”
McGarity said the games will come within “the first two weekends” of each season. “Before SEC play starts,” he said. “You don’t want to play Ohio State in the middle of your SEC season.”
A fuller contract will be drafted later.
McGarity said Georgia also reached out to Michigan, Notre Dame and Penn State about possible games. Michigan and Notre Dame were not interested, he said, and Penn State’s interest was not as strong as Ohio State’s.
McGarity’s scheduling philosophy generally is for Georgia to play seven home games per season, but he allows for an occasional — once a decade or so — exception to play a home-and-home series against a marquee opponent such as an Ohio State.
Georgia has never played the Buckeyes in a regular-season football game. The teams’ only meeting was in the Citrus Bowl in Orlando following the 1992 season. Georgia won that game 21-14.
“I think it will excite people to think of Ohio State between the hedges and for us to go up to Columbus,” McGarity said. “I think it’s something you can look forward to. All those 8-year-olds out there can look forward to playing in the game.”
Coach Mark Richt will look forward to the game, too.
“Yeah, man,” Richt said. “I hope I’m here to go to Columbus.”

Carpetbagger – UGA has 2 Heisman trophy winners (note the spelling) and 2 MNC’s.
They also have a record of 1-0 vs OSU.

II’s not exciting, it’s just plain stupid. Yes, play 7-8 home games a year– no non-SEC away games; and all non-conference games at home that Georgia can win with their B or C game. After the current contract expires- NO MORE away GAMES IN JACKSONVILLE.
This is the recipe for a national championship. Who cares about Ohio State or Oklahoma State or Colorado?

Tech loses Allen, Nesbitt and 6 seniors on D, and have spent the past three years loading teh cupboard with three stars recruits and glorified walk-ons. They just lost to a service academy in Shreveport. I’m always amazed at how mesmerized the media is with CPJ, but even guys like Barnhart are starting to question the depth and talent at GT.
GT is in serious, serious trouble.

That being said, Vad Lee is sick, so you’ll win some games in 2013. But next year is going to be scary. And you’ve also lost 8 of 9 to Georgia. And you suck at basketball, so people in the ACC don’t even care about you. That’s a tough hand, GT. A tough hand.

Since there’s an awful lot of talk on these boards about what makes an acceptable non-conference schedule, I took the liberty of looking them up for the last 7 BCS champs. With a couple of exceptions, they seem pretty much like what UGA is trying to set up — three cupcakes and a decent team (that’s supposed to be you, Jackets). There is ONE interesting thing that keeps popping up. It shouldn’t take you long to figure it out:
Alabama (‘09) – Virginia Tech, Florida International, North Texas, Tennessee-Chattanooga
Florida (’08) – Hawaii, Miami, The Citadel, Florida State
LSU (’07) – Virginia Tech, Middle Tennessee State, Tulane, Louisiana Tech
Florida (’06) – Southern Miss, Central Florida, Western Carolina, Florida State
Texas (’05) – Louisiana-Lafayette, Ohio State, Rice [11 games]
USC (’04) – Virginia Tech, Colorado State, BYU, Notre Dame [11 games]
LSU (’03) – Louisiana-Monroe, Arizona, Western Illinois, Louisiana Tech [12 games]
Feel free to use this in future discussions instead of just randomly spouting out what should be a good schedule.

The funny thing here is UGA has not been a national contender for 30 years, yeah they had a little run in early 2000’s but even then they were ranked No.1 for 3 weeks and got blasted 3 times that year. Never Never even in the hunt and they think in 10 years they will be even decent enough to play an Ohio St. team who gets annually beaten against every other SEC school. Arkansas will spank up on The Buckeyes in the SUGAR Bowl. But the state of UGA football is so dismal it is embarrassing to live in the state of Georgia where you have to reniforce the fact that not all folks in Georgia are UGA fans. When talking to anyone from out of state the first thing they bring up is the UGA program and all the arrest, the AD and DUI and how long will Mark Richt be kept as head coach. Our immediate responses are, yeah UGA promotes the signing of thug players, the AD was in over his head and had a refillable bottle of viagra, and we all hope UGA keeps Mark Richt as head coach because the program he runs is so pathetic.
UGA is a program that has failed in every aspect and continues to fall in line with the banking system in Georgia, failure after failure and takeovers, but the takeovers are our Auburn Tigers, South Carollinas, Arkansas Razorbacks, Colorado Buffaloes, Mississippi St., and Florida Gators.
How many of you UGA fans are packing the sled and heading to Memphis? Less than 3000, less than 4000. Boy you guys pack the Stadium in Athens but do not travel well, but I guess after going 7-5 and 6-6 even some of you know that the program is suffering.

We don’t need to be playing anymore out of conference teams. This was an area that we used to do well in. Now we are loosing to Okey State and Colorado. We need to cower down and play our regular schedule because we are no longer a good SEC representative. Boise will humiliate us in 2011. We simply dont have the coaching or the talent anymore.
