Georgia plans later G-Day game
Three items to start the day:
- To some, it has been a tough call: watching the third round of the Masters or attending G-Day. You won’t have to make that choice next April.
Plans are “being finalized” to move Georgia’s spring football game back a week to April 16, UGA athletic director Greg McGarity told me as we waited at Hartsfield-Jackson for a (delayed) flight to Memphis on Monday. The Masters will be played April 7-10.
The G-Day game has been played on Masters Saturday the past couple of years. McGarity figures G-Day will benefit in terms of attendance and media attention by not overlapping the Masters.
He said the shift worked best for the football program because UGA’s spring-semester classes will start later than a year ago – Jan. 10 instead of Jan. 7 — and added that eliminating the conflict with the Masters is a “byproduct” of the change.
“It allows us to make sure we get every bit of off-season conditioning that we can get in place [before spring practice],” McGarity said. “Allows us to take advantage of everything we can, the timing of it.”
- A bit of background on the UGA Athletic Association academic policy that Caleb King violated, resulting in his suspension from the Liberty Bowl:
Former athletic director Damon Evans instituted a strict class-attendance and academic-appointment policy in January 2007 in an effort to improve graduation rates among UGA athletes. The policy calls for a student-athlete in any sport to be suspended for 10 percent of the season (rounded down) if, in any semester, he or she has three unexcused absences from class or five missed appointments with an academic adviser, tutor or mentor. King violated the missed-appointments provision, UGA said.
- Looks like Georgia is on the hook for at least $50,000 worth of Liberty Bowl tickets it doesn’t need.
Georgia figures it can use close to 6,000 tickets, including sales (about 4,800 as of the latest accounting) and comps for players, staff and guests. But that leaves at least another 4,000 tickets in UGA’s 10,000-seat allotment. The SEC will cover the cost of up to 3,000 unsold tickets, leaving Georgia responsible for at least 1,000 more at $50 apiece.

Hmmmm! Georgia fans usually travel well! Guess back to back mediocre seasons is affecting enthusiasm for tickets to a mediocre bowl. Lukewarm ticket sales can’t be good for future bowl selections and it may come back to bite us some day.

Although, like the majority in this case, I was not happy with our teams and our coaches performance as a whole the I was happy with specific players perform, specifically, Murray. I will always take viewing him perform to watching another team play, period. Too, it is a time to see several of our seniors and those that will move on to the NFL one more time. Don’t watch, if you are too embarrassed for our team, but, I for one, will be there pulling for our DAWGS one more time! Good Luck!!!!! Make us proud.

Think about the football team THUGA puts on the field. 96% of the players are academically provisionally accepted, with sleazo Mark Richt knowing full well that they will use up all their coaching and tutors and elligibility and then have their asses kicked out on the street and soon be pushing grocery carts around Atlanta looking for a warm place to sleep. What a pitiful way to run the State’s flagship university.
Now pay attention, everyone, especially dawgtards. We will now observe a moment of silence in memory of Saint Jan Kemp, who exposed the shameful practices at UGA that were initiated and carried out by slimeball Vince Dooley. Dooley’s image as a coach and a nice guy were forever shattered during the trial, not to mention the one million dollars that dawgtards had to pay Saint Jan. These practices of recruiting morons and coddling them for four years, them tossing them out like garbage, are still going on, but at least the world knows what’s happening in Athens now.

Maybe somebody should check Damon Evans’ academic record as a student athlete at UGA and see if he missed any appointments with advisors.
That’s probably another of his, “don’t do as I do, do as I say do” rules, kinda like the “Don’t drive when you drink” ads with his mug on them.

It is disappointing we couldn’t sell out our allotment. We usually do. The people I know who usually would be going (about 8-10 of em) aren’t because of their economic situation. So, I guess it’s a mixture of “economics” and the sorry season; which leads to a little less enthusiasm. That, and it being hard to get excited about CF. If it were a bigger-name opponent maybe we could have done better with ticket sales…?… Remember, however, CF is a conference champ and they’re ranked. Hopefully we’ll GATA and have a great showing on the field.
Caleb: the rules are fairly simple and you still couldn’t abide. For shame for shame.

Dawg fans are often admonished to quit living in the past, i.e. 1980, yet UGA fans rarely bring that up Yet Jan Kemp is constantly being mentioned on this site.. The Jan Kemp thing happened nearly 3 decades ago, the university took their medicine, raised academic standards (with the loss of some talented recruits to other ACC/SEC schools), and now have one of the highest graduation rates in the South for athletes..
Some athletes at UGA, as in other schools, choose not to avail themselves of the opportunity afforded them. When someone asked WImp Sanderson how many of his Bama basketball players graduated, he replied, “Everyone that wanted to.”
Finally, Bernard, going through life full of bitterness, jealousy, and envy of UGA, is no way to live. Relax, it is only a game.

It is funny for we Dawg fans that Air Force beat Tech, until you realize that Tech was terrible without Nesbitt, and we barely beat them at home.
UGA didn’t beat a single good team this season, and our head coach says, “no staff changes.”
Speaking of our coaching staff, our 6 wins cost nearly $1M each this season, with a $3M head coach, and a nearly $3M staff.
Not much “bang for the buck.”

I am a season ticket holder and will not be in Memphis. McGarity is clearly not a man’s man. Canceling Oregon, declining to comment on Nick Fairley’s hits on Murray, scheduling very weak “cupcake” teams (”talking” about scheduling Notre Dame and Ohio State is not the same as having the contract signed). This is a season…coupled with 2009…where we should have declined any bowl invitation. Instead the most attention we get out of this bowl is the Caleb King story.

I would like to extend a heartfelt congrats to the Georgia Tech football program for finishing 2nd in the Shreveport Weedeater Bowl. It was a tremendous accomplishment for those young men to overcome great odds and wrap up the season with a strong moral victory over Air Force. If not for a few turnovers here and there and Nesbitt’s broken arm, Tech would be on its way to the Orange Bowl as the ACC’s chosen sacrificial BCS lamb where it would score a big moral victory over Stanford. Congrats Jackets.

I for one am scared of what the team is going to look like in April. Our depth because of poor recruiting the past two seasons is about to catch up with us. Look at the names we will be without- Green, Durham, Houston, Glenn, Dent, Gamble, Boykin, Tripp, Anderson and Wood. Who in the hell do we have that can play defensive line???? Plus the fact we have 1 defensive lineman committed to this class so far. This is NOT a joke!!! McGarity can move GDay game around all he wants but he better make sure we sign 40 people in Feb so we have enough bodies to hold a scrimmage this summer. UGA is paper-thin as it has ever been.

Well I won’t be in Memphis but will be back next year. Yes to changing the spring game. you may not like it but those Masters tickets are damn hard to come by and you do not want to miss it. At the same time, the spring game is a good thing.
I do wonder how the coaching staff can continue without much change when they do not seem to be getting the job done, in game playing, recruiting, etc.

UGA Insider, perhaps. I just take issue with this notion that losing a bunch of upperclassmen is going to hurt us. Those guys didn’t do anything in their time at UGA. I personally am shocked that Glenn and Boling are supposedly solid NFL prospects. I guess if they go to a team that passes a lot they’ll be alright, but their run blocking left much to be desired.
Joey, SOMEBODY has to lead the team in tackles. Big hairy freaking deal. Dent made a lot of tackles because our D-lineman, other than Houston, weren’t making any plays up front. As for Durham, you said it yourself. Green was drawing double coverages and he benefited from it. Excellent? Hardly.
I wish all those guys the best but please spare me a bunch of doom and gloom about losing them. Not a single one of them sniffed a championship and we saw some of the most mediocre UGA football ever on their watch. Maybe we don’t have any young guys that will do any better, but I am eager to find out. They can’t be any worse than this lot.

What does it say about our defense when we give up 34 points to the “trade school” and they only score 7 against a service academy team made up of mostly D2 white boys? CMR needs to do some serious evaluating on the defensive side of the ball. I failed to see one AF defensive lineman the size of any of our guys and yet they shut Allen down. Could it be coaching? Could it be Garner? CMR needs to find some answers before next year, another season like the last 2 and he will be gone.

The Masters is a MAJOR deal, and this move was a very good thing.
I know MANY UGA alumni who styglle with the decision to attend which event in April.
April is a beautiful, and great time in the state of Georgia. Just thinking about the dogwoods blooming and the temps hitting the low 70’s gives me chills. Whether you are in Augusta or Athens, the events are amazingly nostalgic. Now that we have the opportunity to attend both, make me look even more forward to April.

Moving the game is a great idea, and overdue. I don’t know how the previous decision was made, but I for one would like to attend both, and I don’t see a reason to create a conflict.
As for the team, I will miss the seniors but players graduate every year, and new stars emerge. Anderson and Gathers will compete for time at Nose, and with a year under their belts they may surprise some of you. Remember that Gathers is just a freshman.
Aubry Jones has also shown potential and has good size at DE. So has Derrick Lott. Both are freshman with large upsides. Look at LB and DB and you see similar situations. I really want to see Samuel play LB. Morant, Stripling and Faloughi all have good size and speed to play outside in the 3-4.
As for Friday, work intervenes. I will be rooting for the Dawgs but I will have to watch it on TV. Thankfully I will be able to see it live instead of using the DVR.
As for Jan Kemp, I moved here in 1985 and barely remember the case. However, the charges weren’t isolated to UGA. I remember one UCLA LB who, after being arrested, reportedly signed the court documents with an X, explaining he never learned to sign his name. He could only print it. Look back and see how many Ga Tech players were actually Morehouse students with dual enrollement.

Caleb King has shown that he is not a responsible adult. He has missed a court date and appointments with his academic tutors. Either buy him a calendar and get him a baby sitter or kick his lazy butt off the team. If Richt is sincere about striving for excellence, he can start right here and clear space for a scholarship for a young man who care enough to tend to his business.
I think Richt is not tough enough on his players. This was Vince Dooley’s main concern when he hired him and it looks like Dooley was right. I have met Coach Dooley and I know he is not the most likeable man in town, but he is the best football coach UGA has ever had.

If you want to be an a-hole about Memphis, let’s talk about all the nice places in Georgia. Buckhead, Sea Island, and Athens. That’s about it, bud. Outside of Buckhead and maybe Virginia highlands, the rest of the Atlanta metro is either ghetto fabulous or a cookie-cutter 4 hour traffic jam. Other than that, there are no other cities of consequence in the entire state. Columbus is a freaking joke and Augusta is just as ghetto as Memphis and about 1/8th the size.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited about next year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.
Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 7-5 or even 9-3 occasionally, but another team will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.
It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.
Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.
Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.
And by the way, if Mark Richt spent as much time coaching as he does making those stupid TV commercials, UGA might finish better than 6-6.

Dawg Tired even he can’t ensure that the Bugs just keep dropping and fumbling the ball. Not that he has a bad D plan laid out but just as you can’t fix stupid, you can’t make a team self destruct that they have to do that themselves..

Actually, we’re gonna make money from that Chick-fil-A kickoff game. We don’t need to fly everybody out and put ‘em up, like with a bowl game, but still get the payout……kind of a good deal. That game is against Boise. Last I checked, they are better than us. That will be a stiff test. Don’t think they are a one-year-wonder, because they are just now signing 4 and 5 star recruits, whereas before, they couldn’t get those kids.
I think we switched-up the schedule to allow us to lose that opening game, but recover later on in the schedule.
Shame though……I would have gone up to Eugene to catch that one.
As far as not accepting a bowl invite……dang that’s just an uneducated remark. We need the practice time. This years shirts, freshmen, and sophmores gain invaluable practice time. We even got LeMay out on the field.
So we play a game that is “beneath us”. Well, we just gotta lay in that bed, even if we lose $$$ on tix, that’s what we earned and that’s where we should play
Sad. But we have to deal with it and move on. To not go and play would be accepting our record and not try and improve ourselves.

UGA is the 7th rated school in the SEC in football, 8th in basketball, 7th in baseball, and no.1 in arrest. WoooHooo….WE’RE NO.1 is the chant heard all around campus.
Time for UGA fans to just face the facts that you have been bypassed by MISS. ST. and South Carollina and look out Arkansas is about to knock you to down one more spot.

I am a Jacket Backer all the way but cannot for the life of me determine why we can’t compete in a bowl game. Six losses in a row punches us right where it hurts, in the crawl.
I am embarrassed that the Prefect Option could not score a single point in the second half!
We have bigger fish to fry than worrying about a 6-7 season however.

Insider…we’ve got plenty of “bodies”; we have a full allotment of players, maybe one or two short of full. Just check the full roster. Many, if not most, of last year’s recruits got fairly significant playing time this year. Yes, not every position has great depth; it goes in cycles. EG with the 3-4 D we’re needing a dominant nose; hopefully we’ll land one that’s ready to contribute. I remember a fair amount of foaming at the month on these blogs when we recruited and landed Caleb and Washaun and Wooten et al.
Some “fans” only have negative comments; always bringing up the negative. There’s plenty positive about the program. But you (you know who you are) have negative comments about recruiting, coaching, players, the AD, scheduling; even finding something negative about A. White’s graduation speech; or two players helping the crashed bus driver; the players giving up part of their bowl money to charity; a leading graduation rate….ad nausea. UGA is damn good school with outstanding academics and overall outstanding athletics. Athens is a great town. And you don’t have to be a “homer” to bring up the positives. Why is one a Bulldog fan in the first place?

Joey, it’s not that Durham was excellent “EVEN WHEN” AJ was suspended, it’s that he was excellent BECAUSE AJ was suspended. He was standing in AJ’s spot getting AJ’s plays, plays that obviously had been the focus for months, and month. Durham would have had a fraction of the year that he ended up having, had AJ been able to be in the picture. Not to take anything away from him, but you really seemed amazed as his great ability and it was really just that of a gutsy, good hands, big ol boy that most team have from time to time.(and the kind of guy I really wish we always had on the team). But it was obvious that he was simply nowhere near the WR Aj was/is. AJ would have scored on at least 3 of those deep passes early in the season that Durham had to sell out to make an awkward catch.

Altamaha…Yes, Durham is not AJ; very few receivers are. But Chris showed a lot of heart and game; and is a Damned Good Dawg. And, yes, “… the kind of guy I really wish we always had on the team…” If he only got “AJ’s plays”, that doesn’t say much for our offense and “spreading the ball around”. As for finding fault with a perceived great player, I’d choose Chapas; he didn’t appear to be much of a run blocker; hence those up-the-middle plays getting no yardage (I only bring this up because I’ve seen a LOT of negative comments here about those plays). Otherwise, I love Chapas and the accolades he’s gotten. Talk about needing a nose guard, how ’bout a dominant FB?
Point being, I think C.Durham has been a great player to have on the team and if all he got were “AJ’s plays”, it doesn’t say much for the QB’s ability to find other receivers. I do agree that AJ is a great one and has made some spectacular plays. There’s a lot of great WRs out there; EG A. Jeffries at S.C. is scary and we gotta face him next year.
Too bad there’s so many negative comments about Memphis here. Memphis is a pretty neat place to visit; good BBQ and great places to hear live music, not to mention Graceland. And Tunica’s only about 45 mins away. The Liberty might be a lesser bowl, but Memphis is OK.
Can’t wait to watch Murray break those QB records! Goooo Dawgs!!

I once was on a Caribbean Island with people who stayed in their room drunk all the while complaining that they were board and there was nothing to do. These are the same type people that complain that Memphis has nothing to do. I just moved from Europe to Colombia and I wish I could come to the game and see that great city again in the winter.
