Academic issues sideline Caleb King, 2 others from Liberty Bowl

Tailback Caleb King and two other Georgia football players won’t play in the Liberty Bowl because of academic issues, UGA said Sunday.

The other players are backup cornerback Derek Owens and reserve offensive lineman A.J. Harmon.

According to UGA, King won’t be allowed to play in the game because he violated the athletics department’s attendance policy by missing five academic-related appointments, while Owens and Harmon are ineligible for the game under NCAA academic rules. Those rules require players to earn at least six credit hours in the semester preceding a bowl.

Georgia plays Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

The game will be the fifth this season missed by King, who is the Bulldogs’ second leading rusher with 430 yards on 80 carries. He was held out of two games because of a high ankle sprain and was suspended for two others because of an arrest for failing to appear in court to address a speeding ticket.

King, a junior, started four games this season at tailback. Washaun Ealey, who started seven games at the position, is expected to get the start in the Liberty Bowl, with Carlton Thomas also likely to see action.

Harmon, a redshirt sophomore, played in four games this season, while Owens, a freshman, appeared in all 12 regular-season games.  Neither Harmon nor Owens started a game.

King, Harmon and Owens will be eligible to participate in spring practice.

The Georgia team reported Sunday to Memphis. Some players were delayed by weather-related travel problems. The team’s first practice in Memphis is scheduled for Monday morning.

Caleb King is the new Jasper Sanks. Can we just get rid of this damned idiot already?

He was good as a junior in highschool…could that be because he was 19 years old?

Yeah I’m looking at you too–21 year old freshman Washaun Ealey.

[...] Caleb King won’t play in the Liberty Bowl due to academic concerns, which means the Georgia tailback will complete 2010 having missed five games three different ways — two with an injury, two more due to suspension for failing to appear in court regarding a speeding ticket and now this latest suspension, incurred for missing at least five “academic-related appointments.” [...]

Caleb King was trouble coming out of HS. The way he bailed on his high school team showed no class. He has learned NOTHING at UGA. CMR has to be counting the days until he’s gone. Can you say BURGER KING (no pun), Wal-Mart, or Two Guys and a Truck? Caleb King has taken a great opportunity and wasted it. I bet this guy will be in the State Corrections system before he turns twenty six.

Bottom line is none of these bowls mean anything except money unless you get one of the BCS bowls or maybe a couple more played in Florida. And the other bottom line is UGA has a lot of work when the best you can do is the Liberty Bowl.

SPELLCHECKER My apologies. In the future when you make a sincere effort to correct spelling I suggest you leave it at that and not add an insulting comment at the end. Sometimes we get in a hurry and don’t always spell words correctly. That is no big deal on a blog but if you feel it is necessary then have a go at it. Yes, you hit a nerve as I probably did therefore the insults. Have a great day. suh

If Caleb was getting notices, weren’t they coming to the coaching staff and/or academic counselors? If so, why wasn’t action taken to get King in line or get him out?

So much is made in the AJC about any UGA trouble, and then the Tech fans go wild on the UGA blog, but when Tech does something wrong, very little is said. Strange. Note Tech players suspended for the first half of the bowl game for breaking curfew and others with academic ineligibility.

First, about the two GT grads – blame should rest on the AD and the academic advisors who failed to monitor their course work. The undergrads apparently met NCAA standards but failed GT’s higher standards. I enjoy reading the concrete “alumni” of both UGA & GT, particularly when they get pious about academics. Obviously most of them have never carried an academic load at either school, possibly not even in an adequate high school. I know that I had to work for my degree!

Dawgster…..

I admit the Brantley was the most disappointing player in college football this year….based on preseason NFL type skill hype…without knowing he was a total head case, with no physical toughness, and little or no leadership skills. Does that make you feel better?

Now…please admit that you though your Dawgs were the 2010 national champions during the summer…..no…didn’t think you would.

P.S……I will admit that I was wrong about not missing all the players who left early for the NFL…plus Tebow. And I realize now that Meyer was never into coaching this year….and it showed during the season…and when he quit on the Gators again….as many Georgia Bulldog fans said he would. But I am excited about the new spirit Muschamp is bringing to town. Go Gators.

Hi Tim Tucker,

I’d suggest you close the comments for this one.

Looks like you have 1 person, using a bunch of fake names, insulting Caleb King.

No wonder you close comments so often.

Let’s shut down the abuse or else kick off obnoxious bloggers.

cantondawg,
You obviously do not know how easy it is to simply get to class and get to court dates and get to appointments IF YOU REALLY CARE. I would tell King to his face you have wasted UGa’s and your own time. Go find a job without a degree and without a real hope in the NFL. Bye.

The reason athletic scholarships are merit scholarships and must be renewed each year is for players like King, who won’t commit fully to a program. Weed him out like a business CEO or keep him on like an idealistic professor. That is the question that comes up over and over in college football these days. I would say cut him loose.

Look, “just” having a degree is no more than having a high school degree. If your grades are poor, or if you majored in a low-demand field (God forbid you have poor grades and are in a low-demand field), you are doomed to a menial job, unless you luck out in some fashion (such as starting a business which for what ever reason flourishes. This is unlikely since so many well-led businesses fail. Or, if you are a stud or a beauty, you might marry money. Best chance for most UGa coeds. )

In addition, LeMay has been prohibited from playing in the Offense-Defense game due to his decision to participate in UGa practice recently. I’m trust he chose one over the other. @TampaGator…Again you continue your inaccurate posts….as i have said many times and i think people that know the type of comments that i do post know that i have not ever predicted a NC for the dawgs…If you feel the need to continue those remarks and it makes you feel better then go ahead…I do love my dawgs but i am also realistic as to where the program is has been for several years…and to give you the benefit of the doubt i believe there was a blogger who used my name some this summer and during the season and spelled it “Dawgster”…but i really don’t care what you think..I’ve tried to be respectful in my comments to you, but you continue to find a way to start the bashing of the dawgs or their fans…Yes there are some as there are gator fans that talk big and hurl insults for any reason just because they may have a difference of opinion…I personally don’t have much respect for them either…You know its about to be new year and i hope when i post on here in the future that you will hold me accountable as i do myself, but please don’t accuse of posts or comments that i know i would not make….As i have told you before i will defend the dawgs with you or anyone that takes in my opinion an undeserving shot at the school, the players, coaches or the fans, but ;thats not to say you shouldn’t have your opinion, i would just ask that you give us the same respect we give you….Its a new year and both programs have alot of things to improve on before next year..

You know you know nothing about me so i can understand why you continue to attribute some comments to be, but i have always been a man of my word…If i say or tell you something, then i will stand behind it…If i make a mistake or say something to offend you, then i will apologize, thats all i can do from sitting behind a computer, so once again i will honetly tell you that i at no time though the dawgs would win the NC nor the SEC, no i didn’t imagine 6-6, but it happened and i’m confident that we will be much better next season, no not a “NC”, but much better…I hope you have a happy and safe New Year…go dawgs

there is too little pride in being a dawg from some or our players. Those guys simply don’t care. Sad, but the coaching staff needs to identify those that do take pride in being a dawg and recruit and coach up those, while leaving the others behind. I’ve been unsure about CK from the beginning but I am sure now-he has a million dollar set of legs but a ten cent head.

TexDawg nailed it-these guys need to take more pride in being Dawgs. Old footage needs to be required video, just like game film-test ‘em on it, and old publications need to be required reading with tests on that as well. I mean the REAL history of the program; where it came from and and what it really means to be a Dawg.

You cannot possibly digest that information and not feel undeniable pride in playing for UGA. If you don’t get it at that point then you need to go elsewhere. Those that get it will bleed red and black for the rest of their lives and will run through a brick wall for their team.

It takes heart and commitment for that. Unfortunately too many of our guys these days have little of either.

First of all in no way am i excusing King’s responsibilities but if you go to 247 Sports you can get some additional info on just why King was suspended…If he was at Bama, it would take 10 of these missed meetings plus they have the opportunity to earn points…You want see any Bama players or some other schools…LSU having players suspended for what King received…UGAS has a much tougher policy…The players know what they are so i’m not excusing it, especially in King’s case, but i found it interesting how our policies on staying eligible compare to the Bama’s and others…and no i’m not bashing Bama, just comparing their policy for missed tutor sessions and classes to the dawgs…Hopefully King will learn that his academics is a serious matter, but i’m afraid people are losing patient with him…go dawgs…
