Academic issues sideline Caleb King, 2 others from Liberty Bowl

Tailback Caleb King and two other Georgia football players won’t play in the Liberty Bowl because of academic issues, UGA said Sunday.

The other players are backup cornerback Derek Owens and reserve offensive lineman A.J. Harmon.

According to UGA, King won’t be allowed to play in the game because he violated the athletics department’s attendance policy by missing five academic-related appointments, while Owens and Harmon are ineligible for the game under NCAA academic rules. Those rules require players to earn at least six credit hours in the semester preceding a bowl.

Georgia plays Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

The game will be the fifth this season missed by King, who is the Bulldogs’ second leading rusher with 430 yards on 80 carries. He was held out of two games because of a high ankle sprain and was suspended for two others because of an arrest for failing to appear in court to address a speeding ticket.

King, a junior, started four games this season at tailback. Washaun Ealey, who started seven games at the position, is expected to get the start in the Liberty Bowl, with Carlton Thomas also likely to see action.

Harmon, a redshirt sophomore, played in four games this season, while Owens, a freshman, appeared in all 12 regular-season games.  Neither Harmon nor Owens started a game.

King, Harmon and Owens will be eligible to participate in spring practice.

The Georgia team reported Sunday to Memphis. Some players were delayed by weather-related travel problems. The team’s first practice in Memphis is scheduled for Monday morning.

Not all good FB players are good students…usually this can be caught during recruiting, or ignored…so, which do you think happens more time than not in football programs…all you self righteous know it alls need to look at the UGA enrollment standards, or go root for Vandy

King has been such a disappointment. He has never been close to the best back on the team. He needs to just move on

Les: You don’t have a clue. Herchel was a dominant back. He dominated the game. Washan is a very AVERAGE back who has only dominated ONE game in his career and that was against a weak opponent.

You are probably a stat head who has never watched a game in your life.

If not a transfer, he should be kicked off of the team for general lack of commitment.

All the hype just didn’t live up to the real world for C. King! It’s almost as if he thinks the football world should bow at his feet and all he had to do in academics was just show up. Somebody needs to wake this young man up. If, and it is a big if, he gets a chance in the NFL and nothing changes he will be a bust. I hope he gets his head on straight and takes action to address his issues…

I’m not saying anything about CPJ or MR, they handed out punishment to fit the crime. Not saying anything about UGA or GT, although I am a GT fan. The thing I don’t understand in the King case is he transferred from Park View to GAC, to get his grades up so he could enroll in UGA. The thing is, and I know the Park View football coach, is why he wasn’t prepared better with the grades when he started to Park View. They should have realized what kind of athletic he was AND where his grades were and had the time to get him a tudor or MAKE HIM work on his books. Always had admiration for the coaches at Park View, but lets be honest, they have been watching him since he was in 7th or 8th grade, or even earlier and knew what kind of student he was. I’m just saying why something wasn’t done earlier to correct the problem in his grades.

Just one more point of reference to add to a couple of other hundred that Mark Richt needs to go. He engenders absolutely no team discipline and couldn’t coach his way out of a paper bag. ….he rated Cam Newton to be a potential tight end…didn’t fit into the “system”… WHAT A JOKE! Why do all the players elect to leave UGA early and go to the NFL when they are not really ready? Answer: it’s the culture that Richt has failed to inculcate into the players.

mowreck,

With some kids no matter what coaches say or do you just cant reach them.In this case I would say the fault lies with the parents.

For the one’s calling for Richt’s head, look around. I wouldn’t swap UGA’s situation for Ohio State’s, Techs, or even Auburn, for that matter. Can’t agree with the NCAA though, their punishment varies too much.

You are probably right Moonpie. But again, surely the parents were made aware of what kind of athletic he was and where his grades were. The parents HAD TO BE AWARE. And, all the time I have I have been following Caleb King, and to be honest, when he got into UGA, I never thought he would play a down for them. He proved me wrong, but he also messed up his team by not being ready for the bowl. As for the parents, I have never seen a picture of them, and wouldn’t know them if I ran into them on the street. So, maybe that is it Moonpie.

Lester Miles…..

As a humble man once said to a proud Christian when the proud Christian handed him a Bible and said,…”You need to read this Bible so you can become a Christian like me and can go to heaven and not hell.” The humble man replied, “Are you saying that, if I read this Bible, then I will be going to heaven to be with people like you for eternity?” “Yes sir, praise Jesus!” the prideful Christian replied. “Well, here’s your Bible back,” the humble man retorted. “Thanks, but no thanks. I would rather go somewhere else!” If being a Christian means being full of spiteful hate like you, then I’d rather not read and learn what you have learn from “your Bible”….P.S….I don’t worship the devil because the devil is people like YOU…..and I have read the a book called, the Bible, many times over (which was systematically organized by the leaders of what would become “the church”…with passages not suited to their purposes being left out intentionally. So believe what you want…but the Bible is not the “end all” for all truth…in fact….a lot in the Bible is not exact truth at all….but fabricated truth….designed to make a point (do you really believe a man spent that much time in the belly of a whale?) Read “the Bible” with an open mind and you will see. Faith is more important than religion ever will be. But faith is personal….and of the heart….not mind, and cannot be controlled by anyone or anything. You keep your religion. I will keep my kind of faith.

Spellchecker…..

ignorance is self evident for Lester Miles…and too bad it doesn’t hurt his brain to be that way. P.S……it is “later”…..not “latter.”

Dawgster…..

nice you didn’t mention that Florida beat Georgia again this year with one of their weakest teams in 20 years. As I recall, you were sure the Dawgs would win this year. And…most Dawg fans did believe Tebow would not make it as a starting QB in the NFL…and that he had to become a FB or a H-back to make a roster. Pay back time, my friend.

Supers….

Oh…..Tebow no longer has to just become a starting QB in the NFL….he NOW has to become an “elite” starting QB in the NFL….well….I wouldn’t bet too much of your money against that happening either. Tebow does what Tebow wants to do….because…unlike Celab King….he works harder than anyone else to become better than anyone else thinks he can be. That is a leader. King should follow Tebow’s example of commitment to excellence….and he, too, might make it in the NFL some day.

Missing academic appointments means not showing up for free tutoring. Won’t matter if King is there or not. UGA is overlooking CF and will have to have a strong 4th quarter just to win. 2nd game in a row to determine if it’s a winning season or below .500. Man that Auto Zone Liberty Bowl trophy is gonna look sweet.

I don’t think the people understand the rules at UGA.

First, it wasn’t adequately explained to the players that this was wrong.
Second, they did these actions because there parents needed them to.
Third, they aren’t suspended for the bowl game, it rolls over to next year.

I sure wish we would have known these rules earlier when AJ green was in trouble, who knows what UGA’s record would be.

Moonpie, totally agree on Ohio State suspensions. By waiting till next year, Prior receives no punishment, as he will definitely turn pro. I don’t understand why Ohio State always gets the breaks. Every year they rate them at the top of the rankings despite a watered down schedule, and no conference championship, and then their coach is critical of Boise State and TCU’s schedule. lol

@TampaGator..The problem i have with you and as so many others on here do with your posts is that you seem to have this memory of things said by others that are completely untrue…First, i never, said that the dawgs would beat the gators this year, until they can prove to me that they can win that game i am only going to be hopeful, but i will never come out and say that the dawgs will beat the gators in given season until they convince me otherwise, so my friend, get your “Facts” straight..And yes there were plenty of dawg fans that thought Tebow would find difficulty in the NFL as a QB and still one game doesn’t settle that debate, but i personally think he will do fine…If it makes you feel better then please tell all the dawg fans “that you told them so”…Seems to me i remember that you stated all summer that Brantley was going to be unbelievable and would tear up the SEC with his QB abilities and that the Gators would not miss a beat…Well, it looks like you missed that one my friend…but just to be fair, the dawgs didn’t do much either and you still beat us again, so if you want to crow about that, have at it…One last thing, if you are going to post things that other bloggers have commented on, please try and be accurate…I don’t think that is too unreasonable…go dawgs..

Agree with the above posts regarding Ohio State…the NCAA is a joke to let them play in the bowl game…there is no consistancy with the NCAA…The other Conferences and Schools around the nation should call out the NCAA for their decision making as they seem to punish some schools differently that have the same issues…

Prefer only serious answers to this question: “How do you explain UNC out-recruiting UGa given all the turmoil which has engulfed that program over the past 6 mos”? They could have a top-10 class for 2011. I, personally, believe that all UNC ever needed was a good coach, as Mack Brown proved in the late 1990’s. I believe that UVa will also rise to the top when they get a good coach who can recruit. They, too, are ranked in top 20 in recruiting so far for 2011. Maybe they have that coach now. Both UNC and UVa have everything it takes to attract the top athletes. They can match anyone when it comes to their total packages. Now, have at it haters.
