Academic issues sideline Caleb King, 2 others from Liberty Bowl

Tailback Caleb King and two other Georgia football players won’t play in the Liberty Bowl because of academic issues, UGA said Sunday.

The other players are backup cornerback Derek Owens and reserve offensive lineman A.J. Harmon.

According to UGA, King won’t be allowed to play in the game because he violated the athletics department’s attendance policy by missing five academic-related appointments, while Owens and Harmon are ineligible for the game under NCAA academic rules. Those rules require players to earn at least six credit hours in the semester preceding a bowl.

Georgia plays Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

The game will be the fifth this season missed by King, who is the Bulldogs’ second leading rusher with 430 yards on 80 carries. He was held out of two games because of a high ankle sprain and was suspended for two others because of an arrest for failing to appear in court to address a speeding ticket.

King, a junior, started four games this season at tailback. Washaun Ealey, who started seven games at the position, is expected to get the start in the Liberty Bowl, with Carlton Thomas also likely to see action.

Harmon, a redshirt sophomore, played in four games this season, while Owens, a freshman, appeared in all 12 regular-season games.  Neither Harmon nor Owens started a game.

King, Harmon and Owens will be eligible to participate in spring practice.

The Georgia team reported Sunday to Memphis. Some players were delayed by weather-related travel problems. The team’s first practice in Memphis is scheduled for Monday morning.

Why don’t all of you Tech fans shut-up about academics. If your standards are so rigorous just stop fielding a team. Quit using that as an excuse. I know for a fact if they want you at GT they can get you in no matter what your academics are like.

Number of TD’s mean nothing. I have seen backs carry the ball 8 or 9 times in a drive and another back comes in to score the TD. I never saw where one was favored over the other one that much. Each had their moments and Ealey had a couple of big fumbles early that got him in the dawg house alittle.

Or go to South Carolina. Spurrier will red shirt Crowell, then let him be the go-to RB once Lattimore leaves early to the NFL.

Spurrier will run the ball. Look at Lattimore.

All these schools that preach that their athletes are scholars are just fooling themselves. Half the rosters of most football teams are borderline students, I don’t care what school you are unless you are Ivey League or one of the academies.

The only 2 games Georgia beat Florida was where Richt got a 100 yard rusher.

Love to see Ealey get the rock 30 times against Florida.

I agree Grillhouse that we need to run the ball better and more. I think back to Musa Smith and the way we ran the ball when Coach Richt won his first SEC.

Just listen to these guys from UGA or Tech when they are given an interview. The english they use is awful. Every fan can point fingers at their rivals not makeing passing grades. But its everywhere. These coaches don’t watch that problem enough. Like all us fans, we just want tro win at any cost. We should be used to it by now.

Georgia beat Florida in 2004 with Danny Ware busting 100 yards, and in 2007 with Moreno busting 100 yards rushing.

Georgia didn’t have a 100 yards rusher in any of Richt’s other games against Florida, and Richt lost every one of those games.

2-0 when he gets a 100 yard rusher in Georgia-Florida series
0-8 when he doesn’t.

At least we don’t fight in the stands. NCAA needs to take charge of things and not just worry about the money. Oh I forgot that is all they care about. How about baseball with just 11 and 1/4 scholarships. What a joke!

Florida got 230 yards rushing a game in 2008 to win the SEC.
Alabama got 215 rushing a game to win the SEC in 2009.
Auburn got 287 rushing yards a gamer to win the SEC in 2010.

meanwhile, Mike Bobo still tries to win the SEC throwing the ball.

The young man simply lacks focus. I went to UGA and I too was p-o-o-r. Got it? My 12 year old car then cost me $150.00 and I bought it from a guy that had settled with his inurance co. and he sold it to me.

I lived in a trailer and one January, because we used up the heating oil in CHristmas time having parties, I froze when classes resumed. I was stupid but I always drove with my license and I made my grades. I hung in there and it would have been easier $ to attend Ga State and live with my parents. I wanted to be in UGA and apparently Caleb does not recognize his opp there.

Caleb lacks clear focus ( school work and his team ) and he is just marking time in order to turn pro. He has blown any support with the alumni. Let him go ……………..who needs him.

King reminds me a lot of Jasper Sanks. #1 rated TB in the nation, top recruit coming to UGA, and completely worthless on the field. I got a #4 UGA jersey for Christmas but I’ll be wearing it in honor of Champ Bailey. Crowell, please come to UGA and get us back to the days of Herschel, Hampton, Hearst and Moreno. We need to get back to being Tailback U…..!!!!!

I think all the dawg fans on here are all irate cause after we swamp Oregon to win it all the dawgs will be the only major SEC team without a bcs title. In the east the gators and UT have em. In the west LSU and the bammers have em and now we’re bout to get one. But rest assured dawg fans. I fully intend to allow you to come over and gaze at it and then shine it for me. In their congratulatory handshake the bammers told me ya’ll were highly recommended to them by the UF fans and the LSU fans as far as your trophy and shoe shining capabilities go. Now git them polish rags ready!

grillhouse,

Georgia could get a 100 yard rusher in some of these big games like the florida game that you talk about and win the game. The problem with that is that the other teams won’t let a georgia back run for 100 yards and hence win the game. maybe you could ask them to cooperate a bit more.

Grillhouse ,

Anyone can get a 100 yard rusher. All you got to do is give it to Ealey 33 times a game. He’ll average 3 yards a carry or 3.5 and get that all important 100 yds. You’ll just end up with 150 total yards though and end up losing big. But at least you’ll have that 100 yd rusher won’t you?

BTW People who graduate with less than 6 credits in a term aren’t exactly cheating. They’re ahead of the game, but you can’t spell something as difficult as “doctor” so you may not understand that.

@TampaGator….why start the hate talking regarding Tebow and the dawgs…The article had nothing to do with the gators or Tebow…I think a lot of dawg fans, me included felt that Tebow in time would be a good QB in the NFL, if given the chance…If i recall there have been alot of so called experts saying that Tebow would not make it as NFL QB…It wasn’t just dawg fans, so to single them out because of your disdain for them seems wrong…And for the ones that have said things about him because of who he is or how he carries himself is probably due to some insecurity with their ownselves…You addressed some issues with Coach Richt regarding his Christian beliefs and reading the Bible…Are you not doing the same thing in judging Coach Richt as others did when judging Tebow whether it was about his football abilities or his Chistian beliefs..

dawg fan thick and through,

Crowell will probably end up choosing UGA over bammer. The hometown school usually wins these tug of wars. But if he is at all objective he would be a fool not to go to bammer. Better talent surrounding him, more stable program considering Richt could very well be fired after 2011. Not an opinion- just a fact that we all know. They also have a coach who has proven he can win it all- not just once but twice at 2 different schools. His dad wants him to go to bammer and that is very well known. I think he becomes a dawg though just cause he grew up a dawg fan. It sure as hell couldn’t be for any other reason. There is not a single reason why anyone in his position would choose UGA and their situation at this point in time over bammer and what Satan has going on over there.
