Tailback Caleb King and two other Georgia football players won’t play in the Liberty Bowl because of academic issues, UGA said Sunday.
The other players are backup cornerback Derek Owens and reserve offensive lineman A.J. Harmon.
According to UGA, King won’t be allowed to play in the game because he violated the athletics department’s attendance policy by missing five academic-related appointments, while Owens and Harmon are ineligible for the game under NCAA academic rules. Those rules require players to earn at least six credit hours in the semester preceding a bowl.
Georgia plays Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
The game will be the fifth this season missed by King, who is the Bulldogs’ second leading rusher with 430 yards on 80 carries. He was held out of two games because of a high ankle sprain and was suspended for two others because of an arrest for failing to appear in court to address a speeding ticket.
King, a junior, started four games this season at tailback. Washaun Ealey, who started seven games at the position, is expected to get the start in the Liberty Bowl, with Carlton Thomas also likely to see action.
Harmon, a redshirt sophomore, played in four games this season, while Owens, a freshman, appeared in all 12 regular-season games. Neither Harmon nor Owens started a game.
King, Harmon and Owens will be eligible to participate in spring practice.
The Georgia team reported Sunday to Memphis. Some players were delayed by weather-related travel problems. The team’s first practice in Memphis is scheduled for Monday morning.

When is the last time we have had a running back take it to the house. Moreno, I guess but he would take himself out of games to much. I am ready for a Garrison Hearst type if there is one out there. The kid at Columbus has some issues from what I hear.

Ealey & Ingram both average 4.57 yards per carry against ranked teams.
Pretty good company.

Stewart,
If Ealey did get 100 yds a game on 25 touches that’s only 4 yds a carry which is just not good enough. An effective running game needs to average 5 or more yards per carry.
Also stats can be misleading. Ealey may have slightly better stats than Lattimore but that is because in games against big time competition they tried Ealey a couple times- he got slammed and so they just quit feeding him because it wasn’t working to begin with. His stats were helped out by games against bad defenses like Vandy, UK, and Tech. Does anyone on this planet besides yourself actually believe Ealey is better than lattimore??? Nope. Only you.

“Good grief! How can anybody lose academic eligibility at UGA? You major in glorified grade school stuff like “Housing” and “Leisure Studies”. Heck, even Ealey is somehow managing to stay “eligible”, and he couldn’t even legitimately graduate HIGH SCHOOL!”

Ealey is better under pressure than Ingram, Richardson, or Lattimore.
In the 4th quarter, Mark Ingram gets 3.6 ypc, Richardson 4.4 ypc, Lattimore 5.9 ypc.
Ealey, in the 4th quarter?
6.8 ypc

More of the same negative news that has gone on the last few years. The low ticket sales for the Liberty Bowl is a bad sign for the program, and I’m slowly losing interest myself. Can’t think of any reason why next year will be any different.

Do your homework rookie.
Against RANKED teams:
Lattimore gets 3.8 ypc
ealey?
4.6 ypc
It’s actually Lattimore that’s jacking up his stats against weak teams, not Ealey.

Sounds like made up statistics to me. And just who was Ealey piling up this high yardage in the 4th qtr against- yep- Vandy and teams just as bad as Vandy. Does anyone think Ealey was racking up 6.8 yards a carry against Florida, AU, Miss State, South Carolina, Ark? I wonder what his ypc was in the 4th qtr against these teams. Not much.

You think Crowell will go to classes when he gets to the University of No Class…..??? Probably not. Good reason for him to go to a a school where the head coach “makes you” go to classes. Or at least has enough interest to check to see if you are. I guess reading the Bible takes up to much of Richt’s time.

Coach Richt and BoBo cannot keep going to small Christian and private schools to offer scholarships. Most players in these schools would be subs in 5-AAAAA schools. THe competition is so much greater. Sometimes you may get lucky but not very often. Caleb just keeps Screwing up and the injuries keep coming. I do expect him to have a very good year. Coach Richt should draft at least two 4 or 5 star running backs every year.

Crowell- where will he go?
Door # 1- Go to Bama where Saban develops pro prospects, demands discipline- no team arrests in 2010 and none since July 2009, and Bama competes for titles.
Door # 2- Go to Georgia and lose to Florida, be surrounded with teammates that are thugs- 11 arrests in 2010, where the coach is most likely going to be fired after the 2011 season, and where the team has been 8-5 and 6-6 the last 2 years and is out of the championship picture for years to come.
Um. I believe I’ll take door no. 1 thank you.

I doubt Crowell will come to PBU? You know, the place where 5 star RB’s turn into glorified Passblockers for Bobo’s pass-happy offense. Pass blocking University, that’s Georgia. If Crowell like to pass prtect, Georgia’s the place to go. On the other hand, if he wants to run the ball, try South Carolina.

TampaGator,
I knew there will be at least one FLA fan crowing about Tebow’s game against…hmmm…the NFL’s worst PASSING DEFENSE. Go ahead and crown his a&& if you want, but he’ll never be an elite franchise QB.
Onto King…most everyone knew this earlier in the week…just wasn’t official.
King should apologize to his team mates and coaches and then humble himself enough to accept any role given to him by the coaches and do that role to the best of his abilities. To say he’s been disappointing is an understatement.

I hope Crowell doesn’t believe it when Bobo promises him he’ll turn Georgia into a running offense if he comes. Not true. Don’t buy it. Look at what happened to King, Ealey, and the rest. Just turns them all into pass blockers. That’s all the ex-QB Bobo likes to do, throw it around and turn 5 star RB’s into glorified pass blockers.

Bobo would sit Herschel Walker on the bench because of his lack of pass blocking skills. Bobo don’t care how well you run, how many td’s you score, or how productive you are when you run. He only cares about an RB’s pass blocking skills. After all, Ealey averages more yards per carry than Herschel Walker, and gets benched because he doesn’t see himself as a pass blocker, imagine that? If Crowell likes to pass block, call Bobo, he loves 5 star RB’s who love to pass block and don’t score td’s, look at Caleb King.

Wasn’t Alabama rated pre-season # 1 like UGA in 2008 and finished with 3 losses like UGA did in 2008? Also, wasn’t Bama up by 3 scores against Auburn this year and decided to throw the ball instead of running it and burning the clock. Didn’t Bama have the Heisman award winning running back and a pretty solid back up. There is no way Nick Saban would lose 3 games after being ranked # 1 and then not know when to run the ball instead of passing the ball. I guess even PERFECT coaches lose their minds sometimes.

“There is nothing more pathetic than an adult ridiculing a young man while hiding behind a screen name on a message board. Everyone has made youthful mistakes…”
Give me a break. Caleb is almost 24 years old. By that age, most people are expected to show up for appointments or their job on time, obey the law, and live by the rules of society. Many 24 year olds have already graduated from college. Others have already fought wars for our country by that point in their lives.
Some people go a little overboard in their criticism of public figures, including athletes, but it doesn’t seem like it’s asking too much to expect Caleb to show up for appointments that are designed to help him obtain a college education. I too hope he learns from his mistakes and behaves more appropriately in the future, but he has earned most of the criticism that he is receiving for this latest “youthful mistake”.

Just don’t want Crowell to make the same mistake King & Ealey made. They came to Georgia thinking ex-QB Bobo would run the ball. He didn’t. Auburn does.
Georgia’s great for QB’s and OL’s and WR’s and TE’s, just not the place for RB’s.
