Academic issues sideline Caleb King, 2 others from Liberty Bowl

Tailback Caleb King and two other Georgia football players won’t play in the Liberty Bowl because of academic issues, UGA said Sunday.

The other players are backup cornerback Derek Owens and reserve offensive lineman A.J. Harmon.

According to UGA, King won’t be allowed to play in the game because he violated the athletics department’s attendance policy by missing five academic-related appointments, while Owens and Harmon are ineligible for the game under NCAA academic rules. Those rules require players to earn at least six credit hours in the semester preceding a bowl.

Georgia plays Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

The game will be the fifth this season missed by King, who is the Bulldogs’ second leading rusher with 430 yards on 80 carries. He was held out of two games because of a high ankle sprain and was suspended for two others because of an arrest for failing to appear in court to address a speeding ticket.

King, a junior, started four games this season at tailback. Washaun Ealey, who started seven games at the position, is expected to get the start in the Liberty Bowl, with Carlton Thomas also likely to see action.

Harmon, a redshirt sophomore, played in four games this season, while Owens, a freshman, appeared in all 12 regular-season games.  Neither Harmon nor Owens started a game.

King, Harmon and Owens will be eligible to participate in spring practice.

The Georgia team reported Sunday to Memphis. Some players were delayed by weather-related travel problems. The team’s first practice in Memphis is scheduled for Monday morning.

Wouldn’t that correlation mean UF’s roster was full of Rhodes Scholars?

Take a look at the comments from UGA fans on this blog and then go look at the Techie comments on Bradley’s blog about the 4 Tech football players ineligible for the bowl game. We hold our players accountable while Techies make nothing but excuses for their players. That’s the difference between us and those sniveling miserable little pipsqueaks. Thank God almighty I’m not a Tech fan.

@dawgfan: Exactly what excuses did you find on the Tech blog that were so unacceptable? From what I read, the comments were coherent answers addressing –why– the Tech players were labeled with the nebulous term “ineligible.” If you can offer up a similar explanation for King and the others, well I’m sure everyone will be interested to read your comments. In the mean time, you’re just blowing smoke to cover-up what appears to be another in a long line of failings in the UGA football program.

Thank god almighty I don’t have a worthless scrap of expensive paper from UGA.

Ealey got 5.5 yards a carry in his Soph season, Herschel hit 5.2 ypc in his Soph season.

Herschel got 18 td’s, Ealey got 11, but Herschel had 3 times mroe carries than Ealey.

Herschel scored 49 rush td’s over his career. Ealey’s at 15 rush td’s after 2 seasons, but got 11 in 2010 on limited carries.

If Ealey gets 15 td’s a season in 2011 & 2012, he will break Herschel Walker’s 49 td Georgia rushing td’s record.

What tech students do/don’t do has nothing to do with this. King is pathetic. He is to be pitied. He should also be kicked off the team. Ignorance/stupidity can be overcome. Laziness and entitlement attitude cannot be. If you can’t get through UGA with tutors scheduled specifically for your benefit you are some lethal combination of too stupid/unmotivated/sorry and don’t deserve the attention and resources that someone else may recognize as an opportunity. Cut the loss and move on.

Ken, what in the good holy crap are you talking about? At what point did I even attempt to make any excuses for the ineligible UGA players? I’m not and that was exactly my point Captain Clueless. They are all morons, especially Caleb King. My God you Techies are about as thick as a damn brick wall.

What excuses are crybaby Techies making? How about that Tech is so tough that its tough to keep their players eligible. How about how ineligible players is actually a GOOD thing because it proves Tech takes academics seriously. I about fell out of my damn chair on that one. Not one Techie has came forward and admitted that those guys made a mistake. NOT ONE. What you call “coherent answers” I call the usual Techie BS anytime anything even remotely negative happens with your piece of effing crap football program. Just because it comes out of your Techie mouth doesn’t mean I have to believe it. Good grief. Talk about arrogant.

Crowell not coming to Georgia? Kinda scary looking at the comments from the bloggers on here- you guys think that this one single player coming to UGA will make or break Georgia. That is incredibly pathetic. If Georgia does indeed get the home state kid over Alabama do you really think the Bammers are going to be upset over losing one single recruit? Nope. They’ll just move on and recruit another great rb like an Ingram or Richardson. Judging by the comments on here the dawgs fans are just going to up and surrender to everyone if they don’t get Crowell. Likewise the Bammers would love to have him but unlike the dawg fans one guy isn’t going to make or break their program. That is the difference between mediocre programs hoping things work out and championship programs that make things work out.

If Ealey gets 17 td’s a year for the next 2 seasons, Ealey will break Hershcel’s Georgia caqreeer rushing td record.

True, Herschel did it in 3 seasons, but had a LOT of carries on those seasons.

Ealey will break it on the same number of carries.

Who needs Crowell? Georgia already has a RB better than Lattimore in yards per rush, and in touchdown’s per rush. Ealey scored 155 td’s in High School, Crowell won’t get near that.

Jim,

That’s cause Ealey got his 100 yard games against the easy competition and got less than 100 yards against tough competition. Your point is so absurdly stupid it is laughable. You needs some serious work on your critical thinking skills and statistical analysis. You and Les both.

UGA ran a different Offense with Walker. It was run all the time pass some. Now, UGA runs more of a run to set up the passes. Buck was not a passer and didn’t need to be. Mason and Murray are Passers. Bobo will not run it 75% of the time or you will not get the QBs you Dawgs love. If you run it that much then you will be like the HATED Jackets and no DAWG wants that right?

Actually folks, Richt is 43-3 in games where he gets a 100 yard rusher, so no doubt, if Ealey can average 100 a game, means Georgia could have a big year. But so far, Bobo, has never had a 100 yard rusher more than 4 or 5 games a season, so it’s doubtful, although it is the most sure way for Georgia to win a game.

—According to UGA, King won’t be allowed to play in the game because he violated Georgia’s attendance policy by missing five academic appointments.—

Unless King missed his 5 academic appointments since Thanksgiving, it looks as if someone was not letting CMR know that one of his starting RBs was blowing off academics. I mean, CMR did announce how he was going to crack down hard on players who violated rules and I am sure that CMR wouldn’t have ignored it until after the regular season was over.

Hayden,

Practically any team out there has gaudy win loss records when they have a back rush for 100 yards. Duh. And the reason a team like Georgia doesn’t get a 100 yd rusher against someone like a Bama or Florida is because those teams are better and because they are better they end up stopping Georgia’s running game. The reason Ealey does run for 100 yds or more against Vandy is because Georgia is better than Vandy. Did you actually think you were something something intelligent?

Stewart

December 26th, 2010

Lattimore averaged about 4.8 ypc, Ealey’s at 5.3 yards per carry.

Lattimore averages a td every 14 carries, Ealey averages a td every 12 carries.

Les is an idiot for comparing CK and WE to Herschel Walker….it is not about yards per carry or TDs……Herschel was doing what he was doing against teams with 9 in the box in 81 and 82. He is in the top 2 or 3 one EVERY list of greatest college players of all time for a reason. Just watch the old tapes.

Stewart

December 26th, 2010

Ealey only gets 12 touches a game, so he has to average 8 yards a carry to get a 100 yards, not realistic.

Give Ealey 25 carries a game, and he goes for 100 yards every time.
