(Note: The UGA blog will be on hiatus while I take a week’s vacation before heading to Memphis for the Liberty Bowl.)
Georgia will be without its starting fullback in the Liberty Bowl.
Shaun Chapas, a senior who recently was named permanent captain of the 2010 team, won’t play against Central Florida on Dec. 31 because of ankle surgery, coach Mark Richt announced Saturday.
That means Chapas’ UGA career ended with the Nov. 27 victory over Georgia Tech.
After battling problems with his left ankle for most of the season, Chapas underwent surgery Friday.
Georgia has three other fullbacks who are getting work in practice as bowl preparations continue: senior Fred Munzenmaier, freshman Zander Ogletree and redshirt freshman Dustin Royston. In addition, backup tight end Bruce Figgins, a junior, is getting some practice time at fullback.
Figgins’ move is “not necessarily a full-time change,” Richt said in a news release, “but we are getting him some work there because of depth issues.”
Chapas received numerous honors at the Bulldogs’ recent awards gala. In addition to being named the team’s overall permanent captain, he received the David Jacobs Award, which goes to the player who best portrays “courage, spirit, character and determination,” and shared the Leon Farmer Award, which recognizes dedication to the strength and conditioning program. He also was one of four recipients of the Coaches’ Leadership Award.

As the “Hobnail Boot!” play demonstrates, a fullback can be the difference maker. As a former O lineman, I enjoyed watching Shaun crack a lot of heads over the years – Thanks! Good luck to you always. You’ll never forget the Hedges, The Touchdown Celebration, the heartbreak of the loss to Tech, the joy of three victories over the North Avenue boys, etc. Vaya con Dios, mi Amigo.

What a disappointing way to end his college career. At least he has as his last game a win over the Jackets. But I’m sure he would have rather gone out playing the last game.
Oh well. Good luck in the future Chapas. I never saw YOU run a play at half speed. You gave all every play.

Everyone keeps repeating the same mantra “We Run this State”.
Now think about it, does that mean much or anything at all. You are competing against GT, Georgia State, Georgia Southern…etc…
UGA lost to the team to the East(USC) South(UF) West(Auburn) , the only direction you won was North(Tenn) and that makes you a multi-directional loser.
So keep up with the We Run this State, not much to gloat on when your state is one of the suckiest in the south this past year. Besides Georgia Southern, what is there to be proud of?

Mama is calling. You are a piece of garbage. This is an article about an injured player whose college career has been cut one game short–yet, since there are no other UGA football blogs today, you decide to use this as a soapbox to talk trash from.
You shoud probably be at church right now asking or forgiveness. For what? For being a totally ignorant and insensitive a$$hole.

OHHHH ME….Feeling sorry for yourself and your poor injured sorry excuse of a bulldog player on a pitiful 6 and 6 team following a 7-5 team that will not be remembered for anything but arrest and jersey selling.
That is real good..bring religion into it, you have no clue about religion or my beliefs.
The UGA program has been a joke since touchdown celebration, black out saturday night and arrest city. Poor leadership , poor play, poor sportsmanship, league leading penalties, league leading personal foul penalties, and a coach who fires his coaches to save his million dollar plus salary who has no heart for the game any longer.
Chapas was a nice player, not great, average yeah, too bad he got injured, but he will not be remembered in 20 years, just like you cannot recall the past 3 years but you can all vividly remember 1980 like it was yesterday.

dd…..dumb and dumber i guess is what that is short for..
I proudly have earned 2 national title rings, and 1 world series ring and yeah they may be 20 plus years old but all those years in between I knew what average was and saw many players come an go through injury, through self inflicted issues and just bad breaks. We all want to live in this world where scoring touchdowns is more important than the report earlier this week about graduation of student athletes. Move on and Graduate, contribute to society,do well by others and be glad he had a chance to ever pull on a UGA jersey, there are thousands of others who were probably just as good but were never given the opportunity. Chapas’s opportunity is to graduate and pay it forward.
Have a nice day.

Exactly. If you have a problem with the level of success or the arrests…why not take it out on the coaches, who are paid to prepare the kids, or the players, who were actually arrested. Chapas didn’t get arrested, you effing donkey…he didn’t get suspended…and he certainly didn’t coach.
Chapas’ effort and the way he carried himself at UGA was exemplary. We should hope all players act the same way.
You need some perspective.
I said Good Day!

Where was the SENIOR LEADERSHIP? There was NONE, ZIP, NADA.
At some point the bad took over the program and if you are not part of the problem you need to be part of the solution. Chapas and the other 15 seniors should have snatched up these hooligans and made examples out of them.

I do not agree with everything you said, but for the most part you are right, no leadership, no coaching, no reprecussions, no idea what a great program needs to be.
Chapas was a nice player for us, but in the end we have to look at the players as a team and this edition was less than wanting.
Sorry Chap, good luck and god bless.

Leadership. As and old school grad, We all knew if we had guys who did not act right, perform in the classroom and on the field and if one of us stepped out of line we were held accountable by a coaches and teammates.
I have seen many players come through the hedges over the years, and Chapas was a role player who did his job and at times was pretty good. We never want to a player end his career sooner than it should, hoping the best for Shaun and all his future plans, but please graduate and make your family proud.

boohoo……I do not despise UGA or anyone, but the program in Athens is an embarrassement to anyone associated to the SEC or the state of Georgia.
With all the arrest, issues, and poor graduation rates, poor Academic performance rates, poor coaching this once nice program now ranks right up there with the SMU Pony Express and Oklahoma just win attitudes and the education aspect is lagging far behind in importance of winning.

Richt and Bobo use the fullback because they recruit puss o-lineman and backs like king, ealey & carlton thomas who can’t block.
Pro style offenses run first therefore need the fullback to lead block. it’s almost a “necessary evil” in the dawg offense, and maybe it’s handcuffing them.
Luckily, I’d rather have the fullbacks we have (Chapas/Munz) over the crap tailbacks we throw out there.

Boise St. is licking their chops to take a bite out of UGA in the Kickoff Classic in 2011. That is going to again embarrass the SEC.

Chapas seems to be from the bygone era that was taught class, hard work and team goals were the most important elements of success as a player and ultimately a productive human being. It seems like “mama is calling” never had a mother that taught him those things. He should have been so lucky to have had Chapis’s mother and may have had a chance to be someone in the world that others looked up to and admired. Guarantee Chapis will fall into the admired group and “mama is calling” is in the group that nobody wants to see coming.

Congratulations to Chapas on a fine career in a thankless position. I think he was an important cog in the wheel on offense and was clearly a leader to be named permanent captain. As a Jacket I extend my best wishes to someone who is obviously a great student athlete and role model. It’s a damn shame that he has to end his career this way. Good luck to him if he pursues to extend his football career after school.
PS – Most of the posts by Dawg fans about Nesbitt and our graduates on the Tech blog are really pathetic and don’t recognize the achievements of these student athletes. I’m glad that my fellow Jackets are not polluting this blog with similar taunts and inappropriate posts. Mama is Calling, I don’t know which school you are a fan of but your posts are inappropriate. Glad there are other bloggers here like “obvious” that can see what it takes to be a student athletic and have class too. There are some glorious moments in college football, but you are always under a microscope. If all you can say about a player or team is malicious, then what does that say about you? I am a 5Th generation Atlantan and was fed GT my entire life. Good Old fashion Hate was the theme at home. As I got older I could see many things to proud of at schools other than GT…UGA, AL, AU, Tenn, ND, etc. Were these other teams my fav’s…no, but they had players or coaches that brought something of value that linked us all. I played football in college, but 14 years of playing rugby cemented my feeling that you could go all out to defeat your opponent, but the second the whistle blew you congratulated each other for a game well fought and then …off to the pub for a pint and stories. Most of my close friend are rugger’s, because they embrace the notion that sport is just a part of your life, but the way approach your sport is way you will governing your life.

Shaun,
Congratulations on a wonderful career, sorry to hear you are not going finish your career with the final bowl game. I am sure you are dissappointed that your collegiate career has ended with an injury. However I am sure your family is very proud of you and your time at UGA.
Hoping you have used your time at UGA to earn a degree, make lifetime friendships, and bonds with both athletes, students, professors and alumni. Let me repeat the the same as some said earlier, you may have heard the crowds and fans cheering for you during each game, but the biggest concept and accomplishment you can carry forth is the education you were afforded during your time in Athens.
Many people have no clue the time and effort that a student athlete, a student trainer, student manager, graduate assistant is required to devote to earn that scholarship, that travel experience and the degree they leave a school with. The average scholarship related to athletics requires rising before 6 a.m. each day, attending a training room, weight room, a workout, then mandated breakfast, classes from 7:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. with a required lunch training table in there somewhere, then onto individual meetings, treatments, taping, team meetings, practice, conditioning, weight room, training table dinner, study hall and any other activity related to their sport. An athletic scholarship usually amounts to around .75 cents per hour for all the time required to excel at their craft or sport.
Anyone who dedicates themself to earn a degree, while working in collegiate athletics requires a special person to make it four year, play hard, play injured, and stay out of trouble.
