What Mark Richt had to say at Liberty Bowl news conference …

ATHENS –Mark Richt flew back into town from a recruiting trip, just in time for his pre-Liberty Bowl news conference today.

Here are a few of the topics he touched upon:

On former Georgia player Will Muschamp’s hiring as head coach at Florida: “I think Will is a very fine coach. I don’t know if he’ll admit [it] to everybody, but he’s still a Georgia man in a lot of ways. I think he’ll do well. He’s a very good coach and a very good person.”

On the changes in Georgia’s strength program (earlier this month Richt reassigned Dave Van Halanger and named Joe Tereshinski director of strength and conditioning): “First of all, I think Dave Van Halanger is an outstanding strength coach. He’s as good as any out there. . . . But I think there are different ways to do things, and I want to go a little bit more old school, I guess, and get after it a little bit differently. By no means am I saying it’s just the strength area we need to improve on when it comes to winning the fourth quarter and finishing, because it has to do with coaching, it has to do with a lot of things. But I’m sure that will be a big emphasis of our program — to make sure we truly finish the drill. We say ‘finish the drill,’ but are we really doing it? Did we do it this year? We did not.”

On starting offensive linemen Cordy Glenn and Trinton Sturdivant, among other underclassmen on the team, asking the NFL for a projection of their draft status: “I think every junior in America is kind of curious where they sit as far as the NFL is concerned.  So there’s a lot of guys who want to turn in their papers and see where the NFL sees them. I think that’s not all that surprising.” He said the key is for players to get an accurate gauge of their NFL stock in order to make the best decisions for them. Losing players early is “just part of college football today,” said Richt, who noted it could be worse: “Basketball, they can be [in college] for one year and they’re off and running.” Still, “we certainly don’t want any of those guys to go, but we’ll just wait and see what happens here down the road.”

And from the recruiting trail, where he and his assistants have logged countless miles this month, Richt reiterated his belief that this is a special year for in-state talent: “I do think this recruiting year in the state of Georgia — even as we were mapping it out a year ago because you are looking that far down the road, this class in particular we thought was going to be extremely strong. And we still believe that. Not only strong in athleticism and ability, but very strong in character from what I’m seeing. I really like the young men we’ve been dealing with as people too. It’s been a very encouraging year in that way, too, which is kind of nice.”

Alabama and Auburn really like our “in-state” talent, especially since they will get to cherry-pick who they want.

Well at least he admits that coaching is lacking too. So now what are you gonna do about it Coach? Time to step up or step out! No excuses next season!

Sounds like a veiled plea to Coach Muschamp – please have mercy on us, please don’t embarrass us to bad, please cut your old alma mater some slack ….. After next season’s UGA/UF game we will see the error of our ways.

Richt ought to run for office. Every answer is canned and just spin to move to the next question. You really never know what’s really going on with this football team. 6-6 is about as close as I can see to what’s going on with the program.

I’m afraid the team will play tight next year. Every game will be for Mark’s job, and they know it.
Boise,SC,AU,Fla are all critical……Why those? We SHOULD win the rest, even if Bobo was the head coach. Those four games will tell the tale.

If CMR is still the HC at UGA when we play UF next season it will be a riot to read the blogs after the game. Everybody is hating Muschamp???? Muschamp is a true Georgia Man, he is creating success everywhere he goes – LSU, Texas and soon to be UF. Don’t hate Muschamp because we (UGA) have a glamour model for a head coach that doesn’t know how to win. Muschamp knows how to be a blue-collar winner like Butts, Dooley, Russell and other true Georgia Boys!

Richt is clearly admitting that until this year he’s been recruiting thugs. Golly, what a surprise.

I gonna believe that Muschamp still has a place in heart for Georgia ( although he’d beat us 100-0 if he could), but I believe he had no choice but to say what he did at his presser last night just to get that off the table about any doubts of being a ex Dawg and Now HC at Florida.

To All you Mark Richt HATERS ! STOP ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The man has been the winningest coach you have had here in forever and he is a great man and a role model with strong christian values. So he has had a tough couple years you dont lose Knowshon and Mathew and expect a Freshman Quarterback ( ALTHOUGH HE IS GREAT) to take you to the SEC Championship and beyond. Give the man some time and you will see that Coach will get it done.

you are an idiot. I assume you are a Techie. If you go look at EVERY single player at UGA that was arrested for pure immaturity (not terrorizing the campus) you will see that Tech recruited them as well.

Lose to Boise and Carolina next year week one and two, and it’s gonna get ugly, and that’s a real possibility. Boise may not be quite the team, but Carolina will be a load. Both those would be UPSET wins for Dawgs………. Imagine that, an upset to beat those two.

Don’t get too upset at the Richt critics. Most of them are people who have never really been in the adult arena and they’ve never had much success (or failure) in their own lives so they stand back from afar and are critical of those who have success and occasional failures in their lives. They’ve had neither!

Hey Stanford Drive. True there will be players getting popped for underage drinking and other “immature” offense everywhere. But UGA has it’s share of “immature” offenders AND those charged/convicted of domestic battery, sexual battery/assault, theft (our top recruit stealing helmets), driving with suspended liscense after coaches admonished, repeated DUI etc etc etc etc.

A true UGA man does not want to keep making excuses and explaining away all the embrassments, the true UGA wants the ship ran correctly. Heck, even Donnan ran a better ship then what we have now.

What I’m jealous the most of about Muschamp is he will save $945,000 in State taxes over his 5 year deal by living in Florida, which had no State Taxes ! That IS a bonus !

I lost all respect for FSU for kicking Bowden to the curb. He is a legend and should have been given alot more respect. I would feel the same way if UGA did it to CMR. If not for a couple of stupid fumbles and a liberty bowl jersey UGA would have won 10 games this year. What part of that is CMR fault you idiots? True UGA fans know where the fault lies it is in the players. They have to perform to win it is never given to you.

Kirby Smart did not follow Muschamp to Florida.

Good move because Smart will become head coach at UGA after next season.

It’s only delaying the inevitable. CMR will be gone because South Carolina and Florida will beat us like a drum again next year.

CMR must win the SEC East to stay at UGA. Ain’t gonna happen.

Got to love CMR. He never says anything really, but looks good saying it. Florida got Muschamp, maybe we’ll get Mullen in 2012. We had an EASY schedule this year, and still only went 6-6. Why? Coaching is my answer, not lack of talent. Still a lot of CMR apologists out there and they’re welcome to their own opinions. But he’s the winningest coach in forever. Ok, but who is he beating? AA teams and the bottom of the SEC. Florida, LSU, Alabama all manage to reload and keep on trucking. No, they don’t win the SEC every year, but they still manage to field consistently good teams. Dawgs have a TON of resources and a lot of talent. But we’re consistently mediocre at best. We’re NOT a top tier SEC team and we absolutely should be. CMR was in charge as we slowly slid down the scale to where we are now. But the CMR apologists say give him more time and things will get better. How? He can’t beat Florida; well once every 5 years he manages it. We consistently get spanked by better SEC teams. I’d rather take a risk with a new coach and maybe start beating them continue to get more of the same.

Study this roster close and you will see next year will be about the same, even with our Schedule. Quote by Mark Richt in the Athens paper the Monday after the Tech Game. ” we couldn’t stop Tech and we had no one to put in to stop them”. Wow….. Couple that with AJ and the other receiver ( tall white kid) we’re losing and we gotta hope some red shirts step up, a freshman or two and Jarvis Jones. I hoping for 12-0, but we’ll see.

as for next year, what if wonderboy, Aaron Murray, has a horrible year, ya know, the sophomore jinx? would that be Richt’s fault?

KB

If all the fault lies with the players and the coaches are not responsible, then why have coaches? By the same logic then no coach can take credit when their program is successful.

Wow I wonder how useless coaches like Saban, Meyer, Brown, Stoops and Chiznik keep conning schools out of millions.

I really do not see a threat from Muschamp. His Texas team did not even qualify for a bowl. This was his recruits and coaching. he would have been in last plass if he was in the SEC. Florida has great talent, better than UGA and should win. Look at the recruiting standing and FL, AL,Miss,LSU all have more recruits and better talent than UGA. So why does everyone say that UGA should be winning anything? The talent is spread out all over the SEC and anyone can win.

who is on Muschamp’s staff? How do you know Smart will not go to Florida? You can’t believe anything anybody says during this wacky time of the season. When bowls are over then the dust will settle. Then we have to wait to see what the kids will actually do on signing day. This is not the Holiday Season it is the LIARS POKER SEASON from now untin National Signing Day.

Hey if I recall the reason Muschamp gets an early jump on the UF job is because Texas is NOT going to a bowl game this year. Why? oh yeah they finished at 5-7. Oh yeah they managed that with TOP FIVE recruiting classes for the past decade. Dang Cyclones from Iowa State.
