“As the Heisman Trophy ceremony began in New York City on Saturday night, the college football world suddenly got whiplash from looking down to Gainesville, Fla.

“That is where Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley had deftly executed one of the most stealth big-time coaching searches in recent memory, as the Gators named the Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp as Florida’s new head coach.”

Watching the 30 at 30 thing about SMU right now, hope that the SEC realizes the Pandora’s Box that they have opened by allowing Newton to outright cheat and flaunt it. Boosters around the conference will be doing their best to outbid Auburn, now, and you will see a redux of the 1980’s, with programs going on probation left and right. It is a sad time to be a college football fan right now.

Aaron Murray threw Mark Richt under the bus today, complaining about Mark Richt firing Dave Van Halanger.

“Coach ‘Van’ is a tremendous coach,” Murray said. “We love him greatly.”

Quarterback Aaron Murray said players were caught off guard by the Dec. 2 firing of Dave Van Halanger.

http://www.ajc.com/sports/uga/multiple-uga-players-looking-773366.html

I don’t think it is right for the Quarterback and leader of your team going to the Press to complain about your head coach’s decisions. By the way, Dave Van Halanger is the most unfavorable coach on the football team, outside of Mike Bobo.

In the weeks leading up to the firing, everyone everywhere said Dave Van Halanger had to be fired, Aaron Murray.

Aaron Murray, 6-6 as Starting Quarterback at Georgia, was out-performed head-to-head by 6 opposing Quarterbacks this season, losing all 6 games as a DIRECT RESULT. Georgia ended the regular season # 73 in the nation in gaining 1st Downs this year.

Anyone else notice that most of the members of the “Team of the Decade” came from the earlier part of the decade? Has the talent slipped or the coaching slipped?

I don’t know if it is talent or a will to win which has slipped. Either way, I hope they get a clue and take an in depth look at what has changed since earlier in the decade. IMO, soon after VanGorder left, we started our spiral or so it seems. UGA needs to find that cut throat (not Chris Rainey’s) mentality.

I’ll tell you something that is starting to bug me alot is that everyone complains about the dawgs not having the talent they did before or that the coaches are not getting them to perform, but if you look at whats going on now, we have several juniors, i wont even mention the names that are actually considering going pro…You Mr. Mckay telling the players that the NFL lockout should never be a consideration in their decision, and then you look at another year of development with these players on the college level that not only benefits your program but most likely the players themselves..now i’m not saying that kids like AJ shouldn’t seriously consider it as we pretty much know where he stands among NFL prospects, but these others leave after their junior years an never do anything, yes some make but a majority do not..Call it selfish or what but its no wonder you can’t develop a program when you continue to have turnover rates that the dawgs have had more so than others lately. I know all teams go thru this, but its to the point that you better recruit some ready to hit the field freshman and hope your young players are ready to compete for Championships..If you have a team with any experience, lets say juniors then if they have any talent then they are probably going to leave…My point is, i understand wanting to succeed and get to the NFL, what kid would not, but i believe alot of these guys get bad info from people, lets call them agents, who will fill their head with these high expectations..Excuse me guys for getting into this subject, but when i read about so many of these athletes that are looking at going pro or even considering it when clearly they are not ready, just irks me…i hope all of them make it and have a successful career, but many of these will get a little up front money and thats it…but maybe for them thats enough, its not for me to say i guess…

Regarding Murray’s remarks, it’s been reported that Van Halanger was popular with players, which may serve him well in his NEW role with the team. However, according to trainers from other UGA sports, he had become lax with S&C oversight, and some players were taking advantage of that (being late, skipping workouts, etc.). Even the players who wanted to give 100% to their workouts were asking the trainers for other UGA sports for advice, since they weren’t getting sufficient direction from the football team’s S&C staff. Additionally, trainers have stated that Van Halanger had refused to attend conferences and adopt the latest advancements in his field. All of these reports might help to explain why OUR 300-pounders on offense AND defense have been pushed around the past 2-3 years, and why our defense gives out too often in the 4th quarter, if not earlier. So, if multiple reports are true, the change was necessary. We need improved strength, tenacity, endurance and players that refuse to lose (i.e. heart!). ….Go Dawgs!!!

After Meyer announced his retirement last year, Florida convinced him to stay one more year. In doing so they were able to retain their nationally ranked recruiting class and buy time to negotiate a deal with a top flight coach like Muschamp. What are they supposed to do ? Stay here on a 6-6 team, who has lost 20 games the last 5 years now ?

Grades have a bearing on players leaving early.

Many of those we question about them leaving, have poor grades and have no choice in the matter.

Why did you leave any of this out ?

If you look at our recruiting classes, the classes are inflated in their rankings with players no longer on the roster.

Or suspended so that their careers here are tainted.

Mohamed Massaquoi winning WR award for the decade is a joke. He dropped two times the passes he caught. Until his last year at UGA he wasn’t that good. He caught a lot of passes but the ones he dropped were critical drops in a lot of games. Also he couldn’t block one of Georgia’s cheerleaders let alone someone playing on an opponents defense. The biggest wimp blocker WR ever at UGA.

7576DAWG – you need to crawl out from that rock. MM had a slump his soph year for 4-5 games where he could not catch a cold. Other than that, he was the best WR ever at UGA up to AJ. MM caught two huge bombs at Fla & Auburn in his JR year to help beat them back to back for the first time since Dooley & Hershel. He also had a personal thing against Tech. MM caught 29 passes against the nerds in his 4 years/games for 5 TDs and the game winning 2 pt conversion in 2006. He was nothing but clutch against our 3 biggest rivals. Who would you like hime to play well against? You should be thankful he chose to wear the Red & Black and by the way, he is Cleveland’s top WR right now. Don’t think he dropped a bomb in Jax that cost us the game.

Sean Jones should have made the team over Blue. Not only was Sean the most complete safety of the Richt era, he was one of the better players period. In 2002, the famous Greene to Michael Johnson game at Auburn, we would have gotten blown out by Auburn if Sean Jones. Due to his 2 1st half ints and several long punt returns throughout the game to keep us in the game, we were only down 14-3 at the half. He kept us in that game. We are not winning the SEC that year without Sean Jones

Blue was a great tackler but was a HUGE liability in the pass coverage. Actually T Davis was not good in coverage either. BVG knew that so that’s why on many 3rd downs Davis pretty much lined up at DE and rushed the passer. As opposed to Jones who was sound in both the running and passing game. Plus he could return punts. Jones should have made it at FS and Thomas Davis at SS

Muschamp is a great D coordinator, but may not be a good HC. The Gators won’t give the old Dawg a very long leash to win the sec and an national championship, and with all the players they are losing this year, odds are Muschamp well be gone after three years. How to inflate a recruiting class and STILL lose

December 12th, 2010
11:55 am

If a school signs two all world 4 or 5 star wide outs and a all world safety and a 4 or 5 star LB, maybe one well known HS back, …………… then chances are that your class rating will be very high. Without the really good linemen EVERY year ………………..every year, year in and year out, every year, good to great linemen are needed in the SEC. Richt uses the old 90s formula of Bobby Bowdon with highly skilled, fast skill players BUT with very average AND WEAK linemen. THIS is one of his biggest issues. Our BIG guys are simply too weak to compete in this league. See Joe T’s comments.

Richt has a failed national shot gun approach to recruiting where the top players, regardless of where they live, like Texas or NJ or Florida or SC go up on the UGA recruiting board ………………… then they deploy after them. This formula totally abandons the 3 and 4 star LOCAL kids that are UGA fans anyway. No Show Moreno probably was more excited with the results of the Temple vs Syracuse game or the Pitt vs Iowa game than UGA games. It showed too. Same with that punk Stafford who did nothing for UGA. Nothing. This IS the main problem at UGA. Thes kids lack UGA connectivity.

Mark R. has overlooked getting really good, competitive ( did I say smart? ) kids from metro Atlanta who have grown up with park pee wee ball and great metro Atl HS coaching …. like David Green and David Pollack and Sean Jones and the Stinchcomb boys. ALL metro Atlanta kids. See??? Eric Zeir is another great example of this and Andre Hastings ……………LOCAL Atlanta kids.

Richt will be fired this time next year or he will resign, proving my point that UGA should have fired him after 2009.

UGA has a young group of coaches at least when it comes to tenure in their current positions. Head coaches at major 1-A colleges would have to have a good track record as coordinators. Even Bobo only has a few years , to be fair . My problem with Bobo is allowing Bobo to learn to be a coordinator , on the job. You need to have 5 to 10 years as a successful coordinator to be considered as a head coach to a major college.
If you look at successful head coaches most of the time you will find they had great coordinator with them when their teams did great. The reason Myers was so successful at Florida was because Strong and Mullens were great coordinators. That’s also why CMR is having limited success at UGA . What made CMR was his success at FSU as an offensive coordinator. That doesn’t mean he is going to be a great head coach. The jury is still out on CMR as a head coach but until he get’s great coordinators he will have an up and down career with only limited success. We will know a lot more about Grantham next year and especially in 2012. I don’t think Bobo will ever be considered for a big time head coach job because he has limitations when making changes during the game and he changes to things that ends up not working from things that was working. Bobo seems very unsure of his decisions and confused during the game, not having confidence in his decisions.
Teri post, said it all in her criticism of Bobo and the offense and I agree with most everything she said.. Just because we scored 30 plus point’s in a lot of our games doesn’t mean the offense did a good job this year.

First, nobody really cares about UGA football awards for a team that finishes 6-6, but go ahead and pass them out if it makes you feel good.

Second, how about an Award to Will Muschamp for having the integrity to turn down UGA, then accept the head coaching offer from Florida. It is going to hurt like hell when Muschamp continues to the Florida domination over Georgia for the next 10-12 years, and getting beat by your own man.

AJ was the most-damaging player this season. We had our offensive eggs in his basket, and he broke a rule that directly led to us being 1-4. A rookie QB without his only proven threat equaled losses. The Colorado game was lost with them coming back while AJ was out with cramps in his first game back. We went 5-2 with AJ over the last 7 games, but he cost us a good year with poor judgement.

Tony Taylor was a better ILB than Ellerbe… though Ellerbe did get significant playing time from his freshman year onward… I just feel like he sort of disappeared between the blowout of Boise his frosh year and his Sr. year.

Paul Oliver shut down Calvin Johnson like I didn’t think was possible. Would def trump Allen in my book if he had not been declared academically ineligible for his Sr. Season.

As for WR… I love M. Massequoi… He was a DGD… but there is NO WAY you can list him above Terrance Edwards, and probably shouldn’t list him above Reggie Brown.

And what about Quentin Moses @ DE? I guess he didn’t have as much time in the spotlight, maturing late… but he was a terror off the end.

Q. Moses is a good name Dash. But I still think Grant and Pollack were better. Our DE’s listed is one of the few positions that makes sense to me.

Dash

Big Dawg – Yes Southerland was hurt a lot his Sr. Year. I think Southerland is a good pick, but he was neck and neck with – not Chapas – but Jeremy Thomas in my book. Thomas was a walk on that became all SEC caliber and was as tough as nails. That being said, I have no problem with the selection of Southerland.

As for AJ… there are two ways to look at it. The award is Most Valuable player. You could say – whose presence was most important for our team? Arguably – AJ fits this bill (see three losses in the four games he was gone). Now would we have even sniffed more than 3 wins w/out Murray playing the way he did? Probably not. Add that to the fact that he almost beat Ark (BCS team) and S. Carolina (SECEC) without green and you have a legit argument. At the end of the day, if you have one game to play TODAY (not the future), are you going to pick AJ or Aaron with your first pick? Yeah. I thought so.

Coach Urban Myer was the best there was and there really isn’t anywhere to go from him but down. He just signed the past 2 classes which were ranked #1 both seasons…that’s in the nation, not just the SEC folks. UF currently has their class just about full for 2011 so I think CWM will just try and hold on to what he’s got which will give him the #1qb prospect in the nation. He will try and steel a Crowell or Rome just to let Dawg fans know he is the new sheriff in the SEC and a force to be reckoned with. We’ll see on that one.

Jim Donnan certainly had an eye for talent and could recruit, but he couldn’t do a damn thing with it. All those morons screaming for Donnan’s return obviously jumped on the Richt bandwagon and didn’t follow UGA before Richt. UGA’s most talented team ever was 2000. Donnan took that team to an 8-4 and looked like crap doing it. They looked sloppy in close wins vs. crappy teams, blow a 1st half lead @ Auburn to lose in OT, and were dismantled by UF and GT. Kris Durham was the real UGA MVP in 2010. He played as a fifth year senior, he played hurt and he usually caught the balls thrown his way. He was a leader. He, unlike Green, could be counted on.

AJ Green will be forgotten by 98% of the UGA alumni ( we matter, not stay at home on Mom’s pc bangers ) and that is that. AJ Green was the most DAMAGING PLAYER in 2010 for UGA and Ealey and Caleb King were tied for second place.

UGA needs to get two great backs form somewhere in this recruiting class. Neither of the UGA returning running backs is any good. See Ealey’s stupid fumble into the end zone vs MSU. See Caleb King late fumble vs Colorado. See Ealey’s many other game costing fumbles ala SC and Arkansas. See Ealey’s KY game in 09.
