It’s official: UGA vs. Central Florida in Liberty Bowl

It’s official. Georgia will play in the Liberty Bowl on Dec. 31.

What became apparent eight days ago became official late this afternoon, when the Liberty Bowl formally announced that Georgia will play in the New Year’s Eve game in Memphis. The opponent will be Central Florida, coached by former Georgia Tech coach George O’Leary.

The game will kick off at 3:30 p.m. and be televised by ESPN.

Georgia’s invitation to the Liberty had been expected since the Bulldogs clinched bowl eligibility by beating Georgia Tech on Nov. 27. In an interview about an hour after that game, Liberty Bowl executive director Steve Ehrhart made it pretty clear his bowl intended to invite the Bulldogs (6-6).

The only thing that could have derailed the Dogs’ invitation might have been if the SEC had not put two teams in BCS bowls.

Central Florida clinched its berth in the Liberty Bowl on Saturday by beating SMU 17-7 in the Conference USA championship game. The Knights are 10-3 and ranked No. 24 in this week’s coaches poll.

The Liberty Bowl will feature two dynamic young quarterbacks: Central Florida freshman Jeff Godfrey and Georgia redshirt freshman Aaron Murray. They rank Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in the nation in passing efficiency among freshmen this season — Godfrey at 165.28 and Murray at 162.72. Murray has passed for 2,851 yards and 24 touchdowns, Godfrey for 2,042 and 13 touchdowns. Godfrey also has 546 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns.

Georgia is in a bowl game for the 14th consecutive season.

This will be the Bulldogs’ third trip to the Liberty Bowl and their first in 23 years. The Dogs lost to N.C. State 14-7 in the 1967 game and defeated Arkansas 20-17 in the 1987 game on John Kasay’s 39-yard final-play-of-the-game field goal.

While head coach at Georgia Tech from 1995-2001, O’Leary faced Georgia seven times, posting a 3-4 record vs. the Bulldogs. His Tech teams won three in a row against Georgia from 1998-2000. In the only meeting of an O’Leary-coached Tech team vs. a Mark Richt-coached Georgia team, the Bulldogs won 31-17 in 2001.

Check back to AJC.com for a full report on the local and national bowl picture later tonight.

It’s time that the Dawg Nation learn to accept it’s University and it’s student athletes under all circumstances. The student athletes give a lot. Nobody, no team, can be the best in the universe at all times! Support you team. We don’t stink. We have talent. Yes we’ve lost some games. Big deal. It was still fun to watch the Dawgs this season.

And that’s what it’s about… fun.

That is a couple weeks practice and hopefully the younger players will get in position of challenge the starters for playing time.

If Richt had an ounce of class he would have turned down the bowl offer and told his players they didn’t play well enought to go to a bowl. Of course the Bulldog nation trots out tired excuses like the seniors deserve it or it gives the team an extra couple of weeks of practice. Hogwash. There are too many bowls. Limit it to the top 26 teams and everyone has to play someone ranked within 3 spots of each other.

I do agree that we have talent, but to have that much talent and be 6-6 is very indicative of “Stink.” this being said, I will be at the bowl game bleeding red and black, and I can’t wait to see our improvements next year. Be thankful UGA is going to a bowl. The liberty bowl is a good bowl and I am glad the dawgs are playing there. Memphis has worked hard to make that a good bowl. Georgia certainly doesn’t deserve to go to a bowl game with a .500 season. Nobody does playing crap football. I like the days when a bowl game meant something, not just another 100k in someone’s wallets. I hope Georgia gets whooped by UCF and then next year by Boise, so I can get a laugh. ” I’m not saying we are going to hell in handbasket, but we were bad.”

Ya know, with a 6-6 record it’s pretty easy to say that and feel that way. But think about… how many of those 6 loses were but whoopins? None. We even went toe to toe with the best semipro team in the nation in Auburn. Really, the only true low spot of the season was losing to Colorado. That was pathetic… but I digress. Yeh 6-6 pretty much stinks but I still say were not that far from BCS bowl caliber play and SEC champions.

Truly, I think we recruited a bunch of bad players that didn’t have what it takes on and off the field. We’ve been a bad team for about 3 years now, which is also about the same time a player’s career takes place. The Dawgs will be back again soon. Go Dawgs!

Strange year for our Dawgs in ‘10. I expected great things this year, and we have shown flashes of brilliance at times, but we have slipped back into heavy mistake mode at other times, giving up huge plays, not controlling the ball on offense when we had a chance to win, and not capitalizing on easy turnovers, and our RBs put a lot of drives to death with fumbles. Murray had a bad game against the Gators. The flashes of brilliance, however, tell me we really could have been a great team if we had put it all together and gelled as a team, and we do have some serious talent. UF misfired similarly even though they have a truckload of talent, too. Our D just gave up the big plays again this year, and we can’t do that and win. One thing that is great about this kind of year–potential recruits have to feel that they have a shot at making a serious contribution immediately! Keep your head Dogs, and remember Auburn had a very similar season last year: 7-5 in the regular season with three of the wins over Ball State, Louisiana Tech, and Furman. A couple of great new players, younger players moving up–things can change in just one year. Our next three games are the Liberty Bowl and UCF; Georgia Dome with a tough Boise State; and Lattimore and Co. in Athens. Time to keep our chins up and get back to work. Go Dawgs!

UGA Season Ticket Holder since 1986, These fools that complain about Richt on here and there opinions of Richt and UGA are not relevant so just let it roll off your back. The only thing that matters is the opinions of the people that are relevant and these people love coach Richt running our football program. Its our rivals that come on here hoping Richt leaves UGA or people with no stroke. The people I know that have stroke are very happy having Richt in Athens.

What’s this crap about not posting if you’re not a UGA alumnus? I’m one and I think that’s a bunch of crap. Who put these idiots with blinders in charge?
Well, the Liberty Bowl is where our 6-6 Bulldogs are going, eh? Preacha Man’s a real coach, isn’t he? Wow, we had a senior offensive line, great young QB, Pay J, and the back who run the State. We also got a cool dozen arrests, Pay J done got caught, and Preacha Man and pitiful staff of Bobo and company showed their complete inability to coach or discipline or focus throughout the year. Now we get to play Central Florida in a bowl game. Are we supposed to be proud of this? Hell no!
All these Deniers and Apologists need to go where the sun don’t shine. They are the ones driving our Great Tradition into the ground by not demanding excellence.
For the thousanth time, IT IS TIME TO FIRE MARK WRECKED, BOZO, GARNER, AND THE ENTIRE COACHING STAFF.
Sooner or later this will happen. The sooner, the better…

Chick-fil-a bowl has a payout of around 3.5 million. It is actually bigger than most new years day bowls. It is the second highest payout bowl other than the BCS bowls.

Liberty bowl does not even come close to the chick-fil-a bowl.

Although I will say the SEC gets screwed in the matchups. It’s usually the #2 ACC team vs the #5 or #6 SEC team.

I think the punishment and humiltiation associated with the Shreveport Bowl will be good for Tech.
Although we all know they deserve no bowl, the insult they laid themselves this season just may become apparent to them. They should have to take a bus, sleep two to a room, and stay for two weeks. The defense should play the entire game against the Air Force offense.

Wreckmaniac

Rod maybe you and season ticket holder can “stroke” each other at the liberty bowl while auburn wins the 9th national championship for an SEC team since UGA last won the trophy. You can have Mark Richt and his sorry coaching staff and live in the past. The rest of us UGA fans want a chance to compete for National championships. We understand that the state of Georgia is a football factory for producing great talent. The heisman trophy winner( its a forgone conclusion) and player that is on the verge of leading Auburn to a championship is from DRUM ROLL- Georgia!!!! @UGA Alumnus: I agree, we will have up and down years. Hopefully, the “Dream Team” recruits will see there are plenty of holes to fill and that they all can play early and often…just ask Alec Ogletree. If we can get a great class from GA, we will see a substantial upswing in wins and back to the Top 10. Bobo needs to be less predictable and passive and another year of the 3-4 defense will realize a significant increase in pressure and takeaways. Hopefully the NFL will lock out forcing Green and Houston to stay another year and our prospects for next year will be tremendous.

Gotta say wished we had more in the win column but as an early blogger mentioned it was still some very exciting football this season. This team night go down with a medicocre record but I feel the team is better than the record indicates. Worst defeat was by 18 points to AU who will be playing for NC. Average loss this season was single digits, a little less than 9 points. Average victory was by a little over 31 points. If someone looked strickly at the season of total points scored compared to points allowed and did not know our record they would probably think we had a great football team based strickly on that statistic.
Good luck in the Liberty and Go Dawgs!

14 Straight bowl games is quite impressive, even if is the Toilet Bowl….Some fans are way too critical though, when you have two offensive players go in the first round of the NFL draft you should expect a drop off. Aaron Murray looks like a Gem. We have a very nice recruiting class coming in, with some key transfers becoming eligible next year. For the people screaming defense: You have to expect a drop off when you switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4, give grantham a year or two, so he can get real 3-4 style linebackers and d-ends and it will be nasty! Hes an NFL guy so no one can question if he “knows” what he is doing. After UGA murders the #24 team well have to be ranked and end up salvaging a winning season so its not that bad. UGA by 20 points…easily.

So lets pray for an NFL lockout so AJ comes back, get Isiah Crowell, Ray Drew, Xzavier Dickson and Stephone Anthony into UGA uniforms and get ready for the 2011 SEC Champs….Lets Go DAWGS

Yes about a million dollars less to the SEC teams to divide up and an expense to UGA to play. Therefore no exposure on TV nor other media for recruitment. One more step down the road to destruction for not participating in any bowl game. Plus the extra three weeks of practice….Well maybe not the last one. For 14 years the extra practice has not seemed to have helped much.

I’m a UCF graduate and am currently attending there for my MBA. I went to the Conf USA Championship because they said it was free for UCF students to get it (not the norm). I wanted UCF to win the championship and they did which is great. They are a slowly rising team in Florida. They are at least between 5-10 years from competeing against Miami and FSU.

Watching their offense and how their defense played, UGA will have no problem with UCF. The QB doesn’t have a strong arm and can not throw well on the run. UGA receivers will be too much for the UCF secondary. The Dawgs should keep UCF to no more than 14, but they (Dawgs) should rack up over 40 points.

I like UCF my undergrad degree and eventually my MBA…but it’s all in hopes to teach/work at UGA in the near future. ;) GO DAWGS!

Lemay=DJ Shockley

He will play 1 year if he stays that long. Richt might use him in certain situations before then but Murray is the starter.

For those of you wondering about Mettenberger, think Daniel Cobb.

Murray would have continued to be the starter if Mett hadn’t left.

‘ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?

As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Will it never end? Apparently not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.

So you’re paying him to be BCS champions, but he can’t even win his SEC division. So why do you pay him millions of dollars a year?

O’Leary has a month to get ready. This is a very athletic Central Florida team and a far superior coaching staff. Central Florida has something to prove and Georgia is a team that can’t make four quarters in the middle of the season, more less be discipled over the holidays. This could be very similar to the South Florida, Miami game only Central Florida is a better team right now. Notice how O’Leary gets the running quarterback trend and the running game, ball control. He also gets the defense. If ND had gotten off their high horse and realized they didn’t hire a stranger when they hired O’Leary, and in most cases like this a resume is irrelevant, they would be playing for some marbles themselves this year. O’Leary even recognized the trend to these unknown Florida schools before most of us. I think never playing the game in college is a plus for George, and Paul Johnson, their thinking is more macro than micro they see the playing field of the game better, they don’t enter the game with memorized solutions, they creat their own styles. Georgia needs this kind of thinking. They are one of the few schools in the SEC that doesn’t push the envelope. The firing of the conditioning coach is par for the course, too comfortable in Athens, watch Central Florida eat their lunch.

Why?

The only other rushing TD was by…you guessed it…. Aaron Murray!

You can’t expect to have an all world passing offense with a freshman QB and not have a true rushing threat to mix up the defense. Oh and shall we get a reply or two of some of the missed blocking assignements for Ealey that lead to some of those sacks??? It’s called football basics. Go the the library and read about it.

You Dawg fans who keep repeating Tech-Georgia scores like a mantra enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.

UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.

Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.

Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.

The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.

It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.

So keep on posting your Tech-Georgia scores all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

1) blame his inexperience
Nope. The UCF QB is a true Freshman and blows Murray away, Murray’s a REDSHIRT Freshman, 2 Springs in the system, and still 6-6.
2) blame the defense
Nope. Defense threw a shutout, held 2 other teams to 7 points, and forced 12 to’s against Tenn, Kent & Ga Tech to get Georgia 6 wins. Defense also held SC to under 20 points. Offense had to win 3 games: outscore Auburn, Arkansas and Florida, just couldn’t get it done.
3) blame the rushing attack
Nope. Had Ealey & King & #1 most experienced O-Line in NCAA back, who had finished in the top 5 in the nation over last 3 games under Joe Cox.

Anyone that knows anything about football will tell you that if you score 30 or more points in a game, you should win. The offense scored more than 30 points 9 out of 12 games…and you’re gonna say the D didn’t have anything to do with the losses. You keep talking about the great O-line and it’s experience…why did they make personnel changes? I HATE fair weather fans…if you’re a UGA fan, you’re a UGA fan. Point Blank Period; win or lose. I’m actually pretty positive that the all the people complaining about our football team couldn’t play the way they play in a game on their BEST DAY. So leave our boys alone and be glad that we’re going to a bowl at all. Let them rebuild. That being said. GOOOOOOOOOOO DAWGS!

And who is James favorite to start for UGA over Murray next year….drum roll…. Christian Lemay!!!! Thanks to Marcus for changing his name to James just to mix it up in the month of December. What an amazing holiday treat!

The ONLY thing I want next year for any players on the UGA football team, is that the BEST players (On and Off the field of play) are representing UGA no matter the age, school year or position.

GO DAWGS!

Dude, the stupid offense should have scored 60 against teams like La Lafayette, Vanderbilt, Idaho State, Tenn, Kentucky, Auburn, Ga Tech, Colorado, none of them play defense.

The defense won 6 games, held 3 teams to 7 or less, the other 3 got 3 or 4 to’s. Defense also held SC ot it’s season low. Offense should have won at least 1-3 games against the bad defenses: Auburn, Arkansas, Colorado, 0-3???

To win the SEC, you got to average 43 offensive points a game like Auburn, not 33 like Georgia.

The defense held teams to less points than Auburn’s defense did, they played National Championship calibre defense.

Doesn’t appear CMR will fire Grantham or replace him. That means another embarrassing season and a porous defense. I’d bet most head coaches in the SEC would have replaced Grantham as DC. Not CMR. He’ll be writing his own obit after next season or mid way through it and the result will be dismal rebuilding years for the next HC and UGA fans..

PATHETIC! That’s all I can say about the majority of UGA fans on here. You haven’t been to the Liberty Bowl in almost 20 years. Memphis is a very fun town especially on New Years. Yes, it’s not a NYD bowl, but it still is a fun trip. Just think, you can be like Ole Miss and Mississippi State and go 7-4 (4-4 in the SEC 2001, 1997) and not go to a bowl game. There was talk that UGA might get a bowl at 5-7?

Just think y’all could get rid of Richt and get Ray Goff or Jim Donnan?

Bow Wow. Re: Your comment that Adams is ruining your beloved University. For 2011, Georgia’s early admission students have an average GPA of 3.95 and a mean SAT of 1311 (plus a writing score of over 650) or ACT of 30 and have enrolled in an average of 6 Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate classes). The pool of applicants had an average GPA of almost 3.8, a mean SAT of 1242 (and a mean writing score of 616) and an average ACT of 28.

You’re right. Adams is really stinking up the place. Thanks for your insightful comments.

P.S. There ought to be some sort of Fulmer Trophy Extraordinaire for schools that admit players who have been thrown off other teams for criminal misbehavior (or at least their fans shouldn’t be running their yaps about Georgia’s troubles), when they are willing to admit to their schools (and even worship) other people’s mistakes.

So when the Dawgs beat the crap out of your knights having “no business playing in anyone’s bowl this year” where will that leave your knights? In the “UCF has no business playing against ANY BCS conference team ever” category perhaps? Or are they already there. Seems funny the only way the Bowl system could get a FAIR match up for the Conference USA CHAMPION is to handicap them by matching them up against the 6th or 7th team in the SEC.
