Tereshinski: ‘We’re going to prepare this team for the fourth quarter’
12:07 pm December 3, 2010, by Tim Tucker
Joe Tereshinski, named Thursday to take over as the Georgia football program’s director of strength and conditioning, started his new job by meeting with the players at 6 a.m. Friday.
Five hours later, he talked with reporters on a conference call.
Here’s some of what he had to say:
- He thanked Mark Richt for the opportunity, thanked the position coaches who have called to express support and thanked all the strength coaches he has worked with over the years, including predecessor Dave Van Halanger (”the second winningest strength coach in America”).
- He said he understands the responsibility and importance of the job to the school, the players and the Bulldog Nation. “This job is not taken lightly by me in any way,” he said. He also said: “Everybody realizes that we have to go in a different direction and become stronger, become quicker and turn this program around.”
- As for changes, Tereshinski said a nutritionist and graduate assistants will “closely monitor” the players’ meals and record what they are eating. “I told them nutrition is one place we’re going to be very candid about.” Also, new technology will be introduced into the weight room, where all workouts will be videotaped and reviewed by strength coaches.
- “The whole culture we’re going with is, we’re going to prepare this team for the fourth quarter,” Tereshinski said. “Georgia used to be known that in the fourth quarter, they won. . . . We’re going to press and challenge these kids every day to overcome. They’re going to have to overcome.”
- Even the fabled “mat drills” – the grueling off-season conditioning sessions brought to Georgia from Florida State by Van Halanger – are on the table. “Coach Richt and I are discussing the mat drills,” Tereshinski said. “No decision has been made on the mat drills as of yet.”
- An assistant strength coach at UGA since 1982 and video coordinator since 1987, Tereshinski strongly disagrees with those who opine that Van Halanger’s replacement should have been brought in from outside for a new perspective. “First of all, I have a pretty fresh perspective of our strength program,” he said. He added that his familiarity with the players and his long exposure to SEC football will be beneficial.
- Tereshinski said he is “talking to some other individuals that may join the staff.” One of those people is John Kasay, a former Georgia strength coach who retired this year after a long career in the athletics department. “He is a tough, hard, knowledgeable, unforgiving, pointed, disciplined man that loves to train kids,” Tereshinski said. “I will visit with John Kasay.”

Love this decision. Pollack said nobody made him work harder. He’s an in your face kind of guy, which is what you need in this role.
Right on about the 4th quarter. Got outscored by almost 20 points, looked gassed against Florida early. Ran out of gas against Auburn late.
Lost a lot of games in the 4th quarter.
Not sure the S & C is the cause of 4th quarter struggles.
The new QB really struggled in most games in the 4th quarter, but maybe he’ll get better, or maybe Georgia can find somebody who’s better, so more coaches don’t have to get demoted.

I will go with Joe T and Mother Kasey….We get back to the basics of hard work and not tricks to “finish the drill” then we will be ok…recruit kids that push themselves and want to to get stronger…not kids that think that hard work is for someone else…

Eddie, the new QB didn’t struggle in the 4the quarter because of conditioning. (Not his anyway). He struggled because BoBo had a tendencie to pull the reigns in too tight too often when this team was not up to being a tough inside rushing team. They seemed to have much more success running the ball when they spread the defense all over the field. then, they would take the receivers out, pull everybody in tight and couldn’t gain a yard.

Seems like a decent S&C coach, but for this to work he really needs to shake things up. And with him previously being an assistant, I’m not so sure how much he will be able to change the players mentality. He needs to make them feel uncomfortable, sore, and wondering what’s next. Really the only way to prep them for a 4th quarter win of a hard fought SEC game.

My god nobody lives in the past like most UGA fans. I guess I’m in the minority when it comes to the fans who want too look towards the future. It would have been nice to bring in some new blood with an outside hire who is actually up to date with new innovative techniques. But what does Richt do? Trade one 57 year guy for another. But old dawg fans are fired up cause ole Joe T is from the Dooley days of the 80’s. Can we please quit living in the past.
I hope some of you got to read the sports illustrated article for preseason 2010 college football. One writer wrote that Georgia has the most delusional fan base in the country. He said they think their some kind of elite football power but in reality they have become irrelevant. I’m sorry to say that this is a true statement. Bama and UF fans laugh at us people. Please wake up.

Nutrition, technology, conditioning for endurance … he’s saying the right things. We don’t need an outside person for this position, we just need someone who will find and incorporate the latest advances. The people implementing the program don’t need to be the scientific experts, they need to be motivators who will push kids and who will learn from the scientific experts.

Don’t blame Murray for his lack of production in the fourth quarter. Blame Bobo’s lack of the ability to call the right plays or to run what is or was working earlier.
Our problem is Bobo . With the receivers we have one of the girl cheerleaders could have scored 30 points per game if they were our offensive coordinator. If we had a real offensive coordinator UGA would have scored 50 plus points every game. With no running back help , partly because the offensive line was so weak UGA should have thrown the ball 50 plus times every game.

I see Tereshinski as the guy that has wanted to modernize the training program to meet current standards and Van Halanger was the old school guy that refused to change. He has the mentallity that “we have always done it this way and this is the way we will continue doing it!” Van Halanger just wouldn’t change and what he was doing is no longer getting the job done. You know what guys. Defense wins games. Pure and simple. Just ask Coach Dooley. How many games did Erk Russell’s defense make the difference in winning or loosing. You can lift weights, run till your tongue hits the ground, but if your defense is a Swiss Cheese 3-4 against a freshman RB from South Carolina, a so-so offense from Florida or a big ol QB from Auburn you’re NOT gonna win. A 3-4 is a pro defense so linebackers can cover short passes and QBs don’t run. Newton ran! And, he beat us. Good for you Coach T. For all of you so called Dawg fans, here is a lesson for you. JT, Jr is the coach and has been since the 80’s. JT, III was the QB a few years back. On another note, I agree with some other blogs that say we need to adopt the same system the Falcons have put in place this year. They have implemented state of the art technology to assist in learning about and fighting game fatigue as well as preparing the players to thrive in the fourth quarter when their opponents are beginning to tire. I say we train these guys so they can play 6 quarters then when they only have to play 4 quarters it seems like a breeze and they are walking all over the competition. GATA CJT!!

Coach Bobo spent an entire weekend with me and my family in March and Coach Richt has called me about a dozen times. I really want to go to Georgia, but right now I’m leaning toward UK or Auburn. When I watch Georgia play, it seems like there is a lot of wasted talent on the field because guys are not prepared for gameday situations. It seems like they practice and prepare like they are playing a I-AA school every week. There is no way that is a receipe for winning in the SEC, and I am afraid that goin to UGA will hurt my chances of playing at the next level.

we have seen this decision process repeat itself over and over. cmr is too nice to hurt someone he knows feelings, regardless of the impact on the program. i would point to joe t jr, joe cox, cwm as examples.
i give up. i will not renew my season tickets this winter (since 76). stick a fork in me, i”m done. might as well look like the dawgs. cmr just parked the dawgs in the trailer park called mediocrity and signed a long term lease. please, no one act surprised when mississipii state and vandy come between the hedges and beat their butts.

Mat drills are a workout of the past. It starts with player’s eating and gaining in the offseason and maintaining/increasing strength and weight during the season.
The old way of doing things was to ramp up in the offseason then lift to maintain during the season. That is absolutely flawed and S&C programs at Alabama, Florida State and others will lift heavy during the season.
Coming from the husband of a personal trainer and nutrition specialist, this could be one of the most important hires in the Mark Richt era.

As a former UGA player this is a big suprise. JoeT was the video coordinator. No disrespect to Coach T but he does not relate well with players. He hardly ever talks with players and when he does its screaming. Coach Van was the best. He not only help produce one of the best teams in this century ( Florida State 90’s ) but he has helped so many young freshman boys become MEN. I can’t remember the plays we ran at UGA , but I can still hear coach Van saying ” Men you are either getting better today or getting worse, you never stay the same…let’s be great today Men” Good luck Coach T and Bulldog nation, but it was definately not Coach Van’s fault for the decline in productivity….just ask Florida State.

I will tell you that Coach T and Coach Kasay will get the job done right. I can remember many years ago as a walk-on, we were doing sit-ups with a 25 lb. weight held behind our heads. New to the program, my feet would come off of the ground while doing the situps. Coach Kasay walked by and kicked me hard in the side and said “what the hell do you think you are doing.” That was when he was a much younger man. Now that he has been hardened by all of the players over the years, ” God have mercy on those young kids.” We may lose some games, but no one will say that it was a strength issue.

The Strength coach did not call one play on offense neither on defense so firing him will not achieve the desired result.
Can anyone remind me of the last time Georgis has gone through a season without reshuffling the Offensive line. The constant moving around of offensive linemen is one reason for the poor blocking that we see.
It is said by every coach that the o-line is always the hardest to get working together as acohesive unit; and that they must play together for a while to develop the required chemistry. Why has Coach Richt and the line coach not develop a three deep line during spring and fall training to avoid moving people around during the season.
Richt has so many apologists I am sure one of them will have an answer.

WDE,
Correct, Auburn does lead the series by like 2 games out of over 100 games, so congrats. I wouldn’t exactly call that “owning” the series. UGA still leads the Florida series, so should I hang my hate on that when talking smack to Gator fans? You’re an idiot. Enjoy your little one year run, but when Cam leaves it is back to normal Auburn football. UGA is about to land a killer recruiting class, and Auburn is a dirty program (everyone knows it).

How many times has a 400 lb bench press won a game for any team? Never. S&C FOR FOOTBALL is sooo much more than just bench, squats, dead lift, clean, ect. Aerobic, physical, mental, nutritional and so many other factors go into being conditioned for a football game. Our guys are fast and traditional lift strong. They take poor angles and are easily winded on any kind of drive an offense puts together.
There is a lot that needs to change with conditioning. I don’t have the answers or I would be changing careers. I just know a gassed/winded defense when I see one. For that, something has to give

As a yoga practioner, it seems the team has lost awareness of the body, and therfore, the mind. and beyond that, lost their connection to the universe. I would encourage Coach T to experiment with yoga to try something innovative. It frees the body, prevents injuries, and increases mental focus. The Lotus position is highly recommended. I have heard some are so deep at meditation, their heart rate slows down to less than 60 beats. Very few football teams use yoga.

Do we need S&C yes. But we also need discipline and composure. Anyone that has ever played on hard nosed, disciplined program knows that discipline and hard work can take you farther than a 6-6 season. I’m very excited to watch Murray for the next few years. This is the type of leader we need on the offense. Time for someone to step up and lead this D. Offense wins games, Defense wins championships. Funny how quickly we forget the good yrs CMR and his staff have brought us. Good luck to CMR, CJT, and the rest of the staff. May next year not be your last. Go Dawgs Sic em’!

Maryland’s football went from 2-10 to 8-4 in one year with the yoga conditioning progam. They attibute the yoga to greater speed, increased flexibility, injury prevention, and many other areas. I hope Coach T will be open to yoga, purely from looking at the turnaround at Maryland.

Coach T is saying the right things and there are plenty of experts in nutrition, strength and conditioning, motivation, etc. on the UGA campus. Making use of these resources will be a positive for the team.
Coach Richt has recognized the problem and has made a decision on what to do about it. I feel confident we will see much improvement next year. I hope that better training in the weight room will result in fewer injuries. We seem to have too many shoulder injuries, pulled muscles, sprained ankles, etc. for a well-conditioned team.

Joe T will probably shoot fire up their @** all season long. It appears that he is also willing to insert newer methods to the program which should help. If we can get someone that is a cornfed, fire breathing, Son of a ***** on our defensive line to play the Mt. Cody role in the 3/4 then UGA should be alright. We simply don’t have the BEEF on the defensive line to bang in the SEC. Pass coverage was also a major problem that needs to be addressed.

Well I went to the Calhoun game tonight and Crowell was huge disappointment. I’m not just talking about his play but also his crappy attitude. Someone on this blog earlier talked about how humble he was. Yeah Right!! Two personal fouls in the first quarter alone and bi*ching and flailing his arms at his coaches all night as he got shut down. They took him out several times to settle him down as the Calhoun defense was slamming his face into the turf.
Aaron Murray, Kris Durham, shawn chapas, tavvares King, Christian Robinson and several other Georgia players were only 25 ft away fro m where I was sitting and I kept looking over wondering what they were thinking about this punk. The Georgia players were extremely nice guys as they signed some little kids Georgia hats sitting right in front of me when they walked by. Class acts indeed. Crowell wouldn’t fit in with this group for sure.
And BTW it’s a good thing he decided to wait until signing day instead of after the state championship game since he won’t be playing in it. Calhoun whipped their a$$ tonight so he can now go home and pout until signing day.
I swear to god I hope Georgia signs another running back and this chump goes to Bama. I’m not kidding folks I was shocked at his poor sportmanship. He was stuffed on a 4th down and 1 play and a Calhoun player reached down to help him up he shoved him away. This guy is a freakin turd.
Kudos to some of the other Columbus players who hugged the Calhoun guys and congradulated them after the game while mr. everything stormed off the field.
Oh amd one more thing Calhoun had zero D-1 players on defense. Congrats to those guys and their coaching staff for working their tails off. Calhoun has got to be one of the best coached teams in the entire state.

Kasay was a DISASTER. I’ll give Coach T the benefit of the doubt, but I still have doubts this will work. If McGarity thinks the answer is to look inside for all the improvement, he is sadly mistaken. Maybe Richt won’t be the only one on the hot seat. Then again, UGA will never win another national title in my lifetime because the “old school” cannot get the hell out of the way of progress.

My fear is Richt cleaned peds out of the program and our competition didn’t. There have been signs this might be the case. Three years ago we had freshmen gaining 30 lbs of muscle in less than a year, this ain’t natural. Now we have guys struggling to put on lbs, this is normal. There may be a heavy price to pay for doing things the right way and all the nutrition in the world may not overcome it. I really hope I’m way off base.

4th Quarter Scoring problems could be more of a reflection of having to play from behind so much.
When you’re playing from behind, you have to abandon the run and pass more on offense, and you have to take more risks on defense.
I think scoring margin is probably the reason for Georgia’s struggles, a lot more than conditioning.
If you’re ahead in the 4th, Bobo can keep running the ball, nd the defense doesn’t have to take unnecessary risks.
Georgia’s hasn’t been able to get leads, and keep them.

Guys, you’re missing the big point here.
AD McGarity is not going to commit to bringing in a new S&C coach. Why? Because you would have to provide a multi-year contract to a new guy. The reason is simple, CMR is gone if he doesn’t make it to the SEC CG, count on it. If the AD brings in a new HC, that HC will bring in his own S&C which only means you will have to eat yet another contract.
AD McG is a very smart man. He is letting CMR hang himself. A good part of the fanbase hate the promotions of Bozo and Silly Willy, another failed loyal promotion will just about do it for CMR. AD McG is in a win, win situation now.
Are we to believe that the guy who’s going to turn around the S&C program was right there as an assistant the whole time. A guy who’s been an assistant and a video coordinator since 1982.
The coaching changes may not be done yet, UGA might look for a new WR’s coach. Maybe one the waterboys can be promoted.

yogi, you realize they only even had 2 or 3 anyway depending on the schedule. (and its not in the spring) And did end up having one. They did that to gain an extra 2 calender days to run through more of the 3-4. I don’t thing those 2 afternoons would have changed thier conditioning any, especially a few weeks into the season, but there might be something to be said for the mental aspect of those. On that note, Richt has said they did not go after it as much in this past fall camp, trying to stay healthy. I would think that gets re-thunked.

Ha Ha Ha Ha…….Does anyone Really believe a change in the Strength and Conditioning Coach is going to change the outcome of any games in UGA’s future?
The on the field coaching, upfront personnel are failures are the causes for every loss UGA suffered this past season. If you can not block and tackle in the trenches it really does not matter how strong you are. Yeah it does help, but if your base people are not the Big 6′ 2″ to 6′5″ 300 lbs plus linemen that can dominate, you are going to get pushed around after 2 or 3 quarters by bigger naturally stronger players. The second part of the eqaution is technique and since the days of Van Gorder have come and gone the techniques is some of the worst in the league.
UGA still finishes 7-5 at best and 6-6 more likely under the current coaching and recruiting staff.

Dooley’s image as a coach and a nice guy were forever shattered during the trial, not to mention the one million dollars that dawgtards had to pay Saint Jan. well, the boys did tackle better this year, when they were position that is. I’m so sick of seeing teams run on our Dawg though that I hope that is what the entire coaching philosophy is addressed to. You cannot win ball games ifyou can’t stop the run or I’ve never seen a successful team that can’t anyway. We finally found some boys who could catch the ball (I’m convinced we would have won a couple of BCS in gthe early 2000’s if those receivers hadn’t dropped more than 50% of passes) and our backs are good enough, not spectacular but good and I think will get better. Murray will end up as one of the best QBs ever at GA. I didn’t see Joe Sr play but I did see the other two and Joe Jr is one tough SOB. this is a horrible decision. Coach T is was a horrible strength coach when he was the strength coach. he’s a good film guy, but doesn’t know squat about conditioning. at least Van Halanger is certified and educated to do such a thing. Coach Kasay, however, knew his stuff when he was an assistant so hopefully Coach T will consult with him frequently.

In the 1986 Jan Kemp trial, O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for UGA, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”
That trial exposed UGA for the football factory that it was, and exposed Vince Dooley as a fraud and a sleazebag. It also derailed Dooley’s plans for a political career. That’s why we see the decrepit old fraud doing TV commercials even now.
Mark Richt is just the latest in a line of sleazy UGA coaches who coddle athletes and discard them after four years of football. He recruits illiterate goons he knows aren’t smart enough for college, but he doesn’t care, as long as they help him line his pockets with millions of dollars each year.

Look. All thats great and all. It’s weight lifting, eating right and hopefully running a thousand miles. But it is just what it is. It is not going to win football games in and of itself. The plain fact is, we are not a good football team because of coaching. CMR is looking for the magical touch in someone other than himself. And until he gets motivated enough to get out of his comfort zone to change this team, its not going to happen. He has got to start talking about winning and stop saying “well you know how tough the other teams in the SEC is. We already know that coach! Oh. And the obvious. Auburn is about to play for the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP! with a second year coach. Good grief!

Listen close here because I’m going to give you a secret that’s not really a secret. If you dominate the Line you will win in the 4th quarter. If you need proof….look at the SEC championship game and all the games we lost. We were beat on the line and Auburn simply dominated on the O Line. CMR is correct to address the strength and conditioning because we need to dominate the line like we did 2002-2004.

FYI — Joe T was SUPPOSED to start coaching immediately when he spoke with CVH yesterday and made the annoucment. However, when the news broke to the players, all Hell broke lose. The players are completely AGAINST this change. They refused to show up to workouts today with Coach T. During a conference today with the team, MANY of the Juniors actually stood up and said they were going to leave UGA because of this change. They don’t respect Coach T at all. When Coach T got up in front of the team he, of course, cursed and yelled at them like usual and told them that from now on he was requiring them to take a picture of EVERY MEAL they eat each day and show it to him. Needless to say, the you could hear the laughs from the players in the room. Needless to say, CMR quickly realized his team doesn’t respect or want Joe T as their S & C, let alone anywhere near them in the weight room.
To save his a** for the chaos that unfolded and is still unfolding with the players, CMR called Coach Van and basically begged him to stay on as S & C for the Bowl.
All in All, Joe T is a joke to the team. They don’t trust him, they don’t respect him, they don’t want him. This is all coming from the those who know the situation the best —- the players.

If you are really stating what went on , which I have my doubts , then that is the problem at UGA in a nut shell. Players don’t dictate policy to coaches ,they say yes sir , what ever you say, sir. That’s respect and acknowledgement that an adult more than twice their age might know a lot more than they do.. There is no way that CMR wouldn’t back up Coach T in that situation. If it was me I would march each one of the problem players in my office and tell them they had a choice ,to show respect for adult authority or get the hell off the campus and don’t let the door hit them in the butt when they leave.

Where would grade the University of Georgia Strength and Conditioning Facilities?
I can tell you where they rank. About 6th or 7th in the Conference, and that is being generous.
You can ask any Strength and Conditioning Coach who has visited UGA in the last two years and they will tell you that UGA lacks in many many areas compared to the LSU’s, Florida’s, Alabama’s and Auburn’s and now the Mississippi St’s in the conference. You may not like it but that plays a role in who wants jobs like the ones at UGA.
Lets get this straight, last season at this time CMR ridded himself of his Defensive Coaches and bought himself some time. Now in 2010, almost a year to date, CMR shuffles his staff around to replace the S&CC. Is there a pattern here? How much more time can he buy himself with these changes?
Remember Jim Donnan, he turned down the NC job to stay at UGA, then within the next 11 months he was terminated. CMR should have hopped right on that Miami opportunity because this time next year he will once again NOT be in a Championship game, he will again be around 500 or a tad higher and who will he want to fire then to save his job?

Richt just put another Nail in his casket. Look at what has happened in the SEC LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Tenn. (until recently) and now South Carolina. All of these programs have been Olympic Based programs. Not 1980 or 1990 HIT programs. When GT hired Eric Ciano, from Tennessee mid decade, they went from being slow to winning championships. SMU became a winner under this concept and that strength coach went to FSU. OH ya they played for the ACC Championship last night. Van Halenger stepping down was good. He is a great Christian man who affects athletes in a great way. But time has passed him by in the wt room. Hiring Joe T (the video coordinator for the past 20 plus years) and his coach Kasey is going backwards. I am just wondering who Coach Richt is getting pressure from. Next year is going to be ugly because by the time the 4th quarter gets here the game will be long over.

The thing I don’t doubt is that the players don’t like the idea of being pushed. I happen to know a former player, who was on the team very recently and He has related many time to me that the real source of the decline in performance is that leadership is severely lacking on this team. Nobody wants to push each other. If you don’t go as hard , you won’t make me look so bad. So I say , go ahead an quit. We can simple recruit some that haven’t come up in the climate of just getting by. As far as a lack of respect for JoeT, or thinking he is a joke, absolutely not even close to being true.

S&C is a necessary evil. Of course the players hate it, it’s hard, grueling, even tortourous at times. That’s where they learn the toughness it takes to finish. If I’ve got a team that likes the S&C Coach, that would seem a problem to me.
Mark Richt may get it right, if he does I see some players being run off as examples unfortunately. First guy that missed the first drill trying to make a statement would pick his belongings up on the way out that afternoon. Saban lost quite a few his first year at Bama, those that didn’t buy into his program. If I’m CMR and serious about keeping my job long term, it’s either my way or the highway at this point, he has nothing to lose.

Don’t know if anyone is still following this or not but…Coach T is a solid guy, He is serious and will take his new position seriously. He won’t try to be the player’s “buddy” or be “cool,” basically he’s gonna get the players in shape make them stronger and not take any crap from the whiny pre-madonna’s.
I dont know where the insider knowledge guy gets his info from, but Coach T has class, he would not get up and cuss out the players. He started for UGA back in the ’70s, and he is loyal to UGA. Therefore, I’m sure he will make progress in the weight room with the players. Why bring some “new blood” in that doesn’t give a crap about UGA when you have a guy who does, who is going to implement new training techniques, monitor nutrition (instead of everyone fattin it up at the dining hall and not getting what their bodies need) and bring in specialized personnel. Good hire.

We all know that Aaron Murray choked in the Florida game. He wanted to be the HS hero in Jax and he fumbled and threw pics and it COST UGA that game. Guilt needs to go all around.
Ealey FUMBLED vs ARK and SC on the 3 or 4 and we lost a TD. He also FUMBLED away a TD in the Mississippi State end zone and he looked dumber than dumb. We win w.o. these three or four fumbles.
Caleb’s FUMBLE COST UGA the Colorado game.
In the SC game ……………..Murray over threw his receivers time and time again.
We are not a good team. We are filled with kids that cannot perform at the high level needed in the SEC and this has been coming on for several years, gang.
When doing any interview, Richt has those sleepy, droopy eyes going on and he almost slurs his words. He is a classic exmaple of burn out but the money is too good to quit ……………. so it will continue until the bitter end. Sad. He is a very nice man, he just does not want ao admit that he is tired.
UGA needs fresh blood ………….. let them come in for 4 or 5 years, win big and let them move on. UGA is no longer a jobs program,.

December 7th, 2010

McGarity will not put up with one more ugly year. He is making Richt make some needed changes and it was easy to achieve them with conditioning coach changes. UGA’s men are always gassed midway through most games and even my wife recognizes that.
Richt is not able to demote or run off assistants. Last year, he was forced to run off the D coaches. Now?? AD McGarity is pulling all of the strings and when the bowl season ends, look for more fresh coaches to be in Athens. We are in the market ( mcGarity is in the market ) for an O line coach and a head recruiter and running backs coach. Mac McWorter has just “retired” at Texas and his successful resume is well known and it has been for years. Great O line coach he is.
McGarity will mimic what Florida has done with position coaches and UGA will be better, especially with the red panty AD of ours gone. Evans was dumber than a rock and with his mega salary, he could have cared less about w/ls as he was living it up in and around Athens and Atlanta, baby.

As an old S&C coach I can tell you that you can over condition. That was the complaint with Kasay’s teams under the Dooley and Goff era. You can over work on cardio to the detriment of size and strength. Teams began to realize this when Nebraska was pounding teams into sand in the 80’s and 90’s. Those guys were definitely winning the 4th quarter. There will never a be a substitute for hard work, but you have to be smart and train the right systems. The key is to maintain a high level of fitness year-round and peak in August and maintain through the season. Footspeed (i.e. quickness) and explosion are more important than cardio. There are other ways to strengthen a person’s will outside of cardio. I am all for crushing workouts but you must be smart about it.

This is a meaningless compromise by Richt to buy him some more time with McGarity who’s looking to make a change if the program continues to take. The conditioning program isn’t the main problem. The main problem IMO is a lack of talent. You can get a 3 star recruit in shape and have him perform at a high level, but a 3 star recruit is still a 3 star recruit! You can get Joe Cox in shape all you want, but he’s still not going to be better than Aaron Murray because Murray is more talented than Joe. That’s all there is to it.
Our recruitment on defense and on the Offensive line have taken a major nose dive the last 4 years. The last great O-Line that UGA had was 2005 when Russ Tanner, Max Jean-Gilles and Co were seniors. And the last time we had real talent on defense was probably around 2005 or 2006 when Greg Blue, Tra Battle, Tony Taylor, Quentin Moses, Charles Johnson etc were finishing out. Since then we have had mediocre talent on the O-Line, and maybe a stud or two on defense like Justin Houston or Rennie Curran: but certainly not enough to shut down opponents like we had earlier in Richt’s tenure. You can’t have a bunch of bodies on one side of the ball and expect it to work. Case in point, this season. The offense put up over 30 points over 8 times this season! Over 40 6 times! Yet we finished 6-6. WHY? Because our defense isn’t talented enough to stop the opposition. Talent wins, period! And either you recruit it, or you get your brains beat out by it!

This is a meaningless compromise by Richt to buy him some more time with McGarity who’s looking to make a change if the program continues to tank.
