Richt tells callers he’s staying and wants ‘Dream Team’ recruits to join him

Mark Richt was outspoken on two topics on his radio call-in show Monday night –- his intention to remain at Georgia and his aspirations for this recruiting season.

  • On the recruiting front, Richt reiterated his vision of signing an in-state “Dream Team” that, he said, could make an impact as soon as Georgia’s Sept. 3 season opener against Boise State in Atlanta’s Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.

“We’re trying to recruit guys right now that can make an impact so when we play in that Georgia Dome next year and open against Boise State, we can introduce those kids to the college football world and make a difference at the University of Georgia,” Richt said.

“When you talk about in-state kids, that’s why I’ve been talking about this Georgia ‘Dream Team’, this team of guys that I think are the best players in the state of Georgia. And I believe if they will stay in the state and come together, we can prove to the United States of America that we have the best football in the country [in] the state of Georgia. We need those Georgia kids to stay at home and do that thing for the Bulldogs, and I think everybody is going to get excited about that.”

  • In light of recent reports that Colorado and Miami might pursue Richt for their open coaching jobs, one caller implored Richt to “hang in with us, don’t leave us now.”

Richt replied: “I’m definitely going to do more than hang with Georgia. Georgia is going to thrive, and Georgia is going to have a tremendous future ahead of us. And I’m excited to be here.”

Another caller had two questions: Will junior linebacker Justin Houston enter the 2011 NFL draft? And will Richt stay or “jump ship” to his alma mater, Miami?

Richt said he doesn’t know what Houston will do but suggested he could be a top-five or top-10 NFL pick in 2012 if he plays another season of college ball. Houston faces a tough decision, Richt acknowledged.

As for the caller’s second question: “For me, I don’t have a tough decision,” Richt said. “Georgia is the greatest place in the United States of America for me and my family.”

i would be worried if i were an assistant, but I think we all know what a great coach Mark Richt is for our University, With Aaron Murray running the show we are in great shape for the future.
When Crowell realizes he needs to show the others what an impact he can have he will commit, There is room for him in the Bulldog hall of fame…Go Dawgs!!!

This is a great and beautiful state from Cumberland Island and the Okefenokee Swamp over to Lake Seminole and up to Providence canyon and the rapids of the Chattahoochee in Columbus. From the hills of Rome up to Cloudland Canyon over the Cohutta Wilderness and the Blue Ridge to Tallulah Gorge and the Chatooga River. From the banks of the Savannah in Augusta down to the wonderful city of Savannah. Back up the middle to Macon, Dublin, Milledgeville and Thomaston on the fall line. From Dowdle’s knob on Pine Mountain to the great Olympic City of Atlanta and all the suburbs north south east and west. Love this state, the 13th state, love the people you grow up with. Come to the oldest State University in America. The campus, the atmosphere, the GIRLS. Don’t defect to the border states of Alabama or South Carolina. Let the Florida kids stay south of Valdosta and Thomasville, and lord knows Tennessee would be nothing if forced to field players only from that state.

92,000 of your closest friends, a lifetime of fans and and a network of lifelong associations united to bring honor and love and victory for the home state, the home school, your home neighborhood. Bring it up to Athens boys boys lets take our spot at the top of the college football podium for the Empire State of the South. Coach Richt has finished 2nd one year and third another year in the final polls. We’ve won 2 of 3 Sugar Bowls under his watch. It’s 9 and 1 against the trade school and soon to be 8-2 in Bowl games.

These last two seasons have been a lull but you guys are the missing piece. Bring it on home, keep it at home, a national championship is the goal. Coach Richt is the man that can do it. Climb aboard boys.

UGA gets their better than fair share but I’m beginning to think like Spurrier. I can understand CMR’s need for greed in the players but unless there’s a Vince and an Erk in the mix, it’s more like ‘ Dream On ‘…btw, can’t CMR find a dang QB in his home state..?

Richt can recruit all the “dream team” players he wants….but they better be mostly defensive players who are smart, fast, and coachable. Ditto with Florida and their offense.

Richt has already made the tough decisions needed to fix what was wrong. The simple fact is we weren’t a good team this year. However next year we will improve with an experienced, talented QB and a new defense with a year under their belt. Those that are negative aren’t really fans, and definitely not alumni. CMR keeps this job as long as he wants it.

All I have to say is CMR can say what everyone wants to hear but the bottom line is the good old dollar. Now all of a sudden he wants to gather this GA Dream Team I mean come on. Both UGA and GT need to step up to the plate and go after these kids in this great state of ours and stop letting them get away to all these other schools. This past weekend of all the rival matchups this game was one of the best and goes to show how much each school wants to win.

We all know GT will never be able to get the top recruits like UGA or alot of other schools but you have to get players and that is the bottom line. Stop talking and let’s start producing from both the Universities. As for CMR leaving that is just a wait and see because as I said before the bottom line is the dollar and CMR knows that.

I hate to play devil’s advocate, but what if crowell and drew go elswhere? What impact would this have on Richt and his future with UGA? Listen, I like the guy a lot but what do we do if Georgia has another down year next season? These are real tough questions that need to be addressed. A lot of die hard Richt supporters live in fantasy land, saying we will be on top again next year! How? I look at AJ and Durham leaving and cringe at how our offense is going to look next season. Some of you brag about how the offense looked when they had a string of 30 plus point performances but do you remember the first couple games? The south carolina game? That is what I fear our offense will look like next season, the one from the south carolina game.

Richt will stay in Georgia because their fan base is the most gullible in the country. They have convinced them selves that they are an elite program. No one believes that outside of Clarke County.

Why go to South Florida where you actually have to prove yourself?

Best of Luck Coach Richt. I agree another year and let’s see what happens. Coach Grantham needs to get his style of defensive players and Coach Bobo needs another year but not as an offensive coordinator.

If Coach Bobo stays then I hope he changes his approach and be more creative. There is a need to mix the pro-style with a mixer of spread offense. He has the talent on board.

Top recruits. Please stay with Georgia. If there was ever a time too have an impact, it’s now.

Richt sounds like he’s trying to sell Ford Trucks. He’s got to get rid of some Coaches If he’s going to recriut top Talent whether its in the state of Ga. or any other State. He needs to get rid of Rodney Garner, he’s the one that been signing all these DIV. II PLAYERS ON GA. TEAM THAT CAN’T PLAY UP TO DIV. I standard and take BOBO with him. I’m really not sure if Gratham is our answer on Defense, We give up as many points as we did with Martinez.

Todd Grantham in the Athens paper this morning basically admits they couldn’t stop Tech Saturday night. Nice. Tech ran a record 92 plays and held the ball 3to1. Tech doesn’t fumble 3 times, we lose by two touchdowns. That side of the ball concerns me. Big gaps in the defensive line and linebackers playing 8 yards or so back…..I don’t know. I guess we are missing the big nose tackle that is supposed to blow up the middle?

Murph, the key to Georgia getting back to winning is on defense. But not having any proven receiving threat next year concerns me. Number 12 and number 7, the TE will be back, but how much of their success was having #8 on the field ?

I see nothing in the above answers CMR gave that indicated
he really means he will stay at UGA. He dodged the questions with indirect answers. If he really does mean he is going to stay, he should simply say ” I am not leaving”.

I get the whole 3-4 takes time to get the right players argument. But what alarms me is Grantham’s lack of adjustments in the GT game. Regardless of personnel or what type of defense you run a coach has got to have the ability to make adjustments to what the other team is doing. PJ found the weakness in our defense pretty quick and just went to town on us. And Grantham just sit back and took it all night without a fight. At least try to do something different. One more thing. Miami has been the one team that has dominated GT’s offense the last two years. Why can’t we take Miami’s game film and do what they do? Thats why they calll the NFL a copycat league because when somebody finds a trend that really work then other coaches follow suit. Damn. Just do what Miami does!

Next year is his last chance to stay at UGA and signing a bunch of high school players ain’t gonna help him fast enough. He better sign a BUNCH of JUCO’s who can PLAY right a way and that ain’t gonna happen. He’s GONE after next year unless he can beg McGarity to let him hang around.

Where are the calls for Kirby Smart after blowing a 24-0 lead to Auburn and Will Muschamp after Texas’ 5-7 season?

If Georgia goes either 11-2 or 10-3 and finishes in the top 15 next season, or they only win 6 or 7 games again then the decision will be easy regarding Richt after next season.

Buy, for instance, what if they finish 8-5?

Everyone seems to forget that Alabama sucked just a few years ago and this year they wewe to repeat as National Champ. Texas was to have been right back in the title picture. Auburn will be down next year. SC finally got a running back and is in the championship game. Florida looks just as bad as UGA this year. UGA will be back.

By the way, all these negative comments are being read by our potential “Dream Team” recruits. Do some of you ever wonder why we lose recruits to surrounding programs? TOO much negative!!!! Heck, I wouldn’t go to UGA if I wasn’t old enough to understand the source. But now that 18 year old, confused kid…..well that’s another story.
