Murray matches a Shockley record; Richt vs. O’Leary in Liberty Bowl?
2:30 pm November 30, 2010, by Tim Tucker
Cleaning out the notebook before departing the blog for a brief vacation:
- I mentioned a couple of days ago that Aaron Murray needs just one touchdown pass in Georgia’s bowl game to match Matthew Stafford’s single-season school record of 25. What’s more, as Will Brown of Athens pointed out to me and UGA confirmed, Murray already has matched D.J. Shockley’s UGA single-season record of 28 touchdowns accounted for. Murray, like Shockley in 2005, has thrown for 24 and run for four. Pretty impressive rookie season, to say the least. (Click here for more on Murray’s season for the record books.)
- Mark Richt, speaking on his radio show Monday night about Marlon Brown’s recovery of a Brandon Boykin fumble on the kickoff return following the Georgia Tech touchdown/missed PAT that cut Georgia’s lead to 35-34: “That might have been the biggest play of the game for Marlon Brown to recover that fumble.”
- As I mentioned Sunday, Georgia’s expected Liberty Bowl appearance would bring an interesting storyline — the opposing coach. Either Central Florida’s George O’Leary, the former Georgia Tech coach, or SMU’s June Jones, the former Atlanta Falcons coach. O’Leary was 3-4 vs. Georgia as Tech’s head coach from 1995 through 2001. Jones’ Hawaii team lost to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl following the 2007 season. Central Florida and SMU meet Saturday for the Conference USA championship and Liberty Bowl berth.
- Georgia ended the regular season ranked No. 18 in the nation in turnover margin – a 100-spot improvement from last year’s No. 118. The Bulldogs are plus 10 in turnovers this season, compared to minus 16 last season.
- Todd Grantham on Justin Houston’s stay-or-go choice: “He can be one of the most dominant players in college football next year if he chooses to do that. If he doesn’t, then he’s obviously going to be a guy who’s going to play at the next level and he’ll just continue to get better.” Grantham said he doesn’t know if Houston will return for his senior season or enter the 2011 NFL draft. “We’ll just see as we move forward what’s best for him,” Grantham said, “and we’ll kind of go from there.”
- Players will lift weights and run this week, but Richt said bowl practices won’t begin before next week. The bulk of Georgia’s bowl practices will come after fall-semester final exams are completed on Dec. 15.
Today’s other posts:
UGA adds Florida Atlantic to 2012 football schedule — at cost of $1 million.
Richt tells callers he’s staying and wants ‘Dream Team’ recruits to join him.

The two 4th & 1 plays by Murray against Tech. 0 for 2. 3rd and 9? Sacked. Rushing? -4 yards. 1pass completion in the 4th quarter.
No 3rd down conversions in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th quarters against Tech.
Typically Murray performance.

“That proves my point. If Stafford had Murray’s receivers UGA would have won two national championships. All I can remember of the Stafford years is the announcers and press after each game making it a point to say how many passes that hit our receivers in the hands and were dropped. UGA had the worst receivers that have ever been at UGA back when Stafford played. With Murray’s receivers Stafford could have had 500 yards passing a game, plus a great running game.”
You aren’t serious with this statement are you?
Mohamed Massaquoi…58 catches 920 yds 15.9 avg 8 td’s (drafted 2nd round)
AJ Green…56 catches 963 yds 17.2 avg 8 td’s (future 1st rounder)
Knowshon Mareno…33 catches 392 yds 11.9 avg 2 td’ss (pk’d 12th overall in the 1st round)
Kris Durham…29 catches 451 yds 15.6 avg 2 td’s
Oh yea BTW, the lack of a running game resulted in Moreno rushing for 1,400 yds 5.6 avg and 16 td’s
Now for this year Green 49 catches, Durham 29 catches, Charles, 24 catches, King 23 catches, Brown 10 catches…this while the top rusher was Ealey w/ 141 carries for 751 yds, 5.3 avg and 11 tds

Bo,
If you had read comments from sports writers at the time, they suggested that Stafford could be seriously injured playing behind the Detroit offensive line. Sometimes you have to sit people down and tell them they are not as good as they think nor or they ready for the next level. This is not new news. It has happened to other “great quarterbacks” who joined bad teams. He could have pulled a Manning and demanded to go to a better team. Archie did not raise fools.

Murray will be a good QB at UGA for two more years. Just like Moreno, we wasted a year by redshirting him. But then we would not have been led by Joe Coxsenki the Fourth last year. Besides that year of experience would not have of made any difference in our 6 close losses this year.

The only way these guys will stay is if there is a lock out. That is not a good thing either because that means a ton of top college players will be back for another year. Cam, Ingram, Jenkins. just to name a few. I like our chances without them. has anyone looked at the 2011 scheduel? by far the easiest on I have ever seen. Big games at home Bosie in the dome. Running game needs to improve I hope Ken Malcome will be the guy next year.

I have a source in Athens that next year will be Richt’s last as UGA’s head coach, or anyone’s coach. He said that Richt has expressed coaching one more year, especially since this year was so terrible, recruit heavy to get great players for the future, but then to announce his ressignation before or at the start of next season after the season’s end. He wishes to spend his retirement doing missionary work and spending time with his family. I don’t like this news at all, because I’m one who likes Richt as our head coach, and one for a long long time, but it’s just what i’ve heard. Could be a rumor circulating that’s not true or could happen. Hope he’s with us for several years to come!!

C’mon now! We all know that Cecil Newton paid Blair (Walsh obviously isn’t his last name) to miss that kick! The War Tigers beating a 6-6 team going to a bowl team looks better than a victory over a 5-7 team. The Benz with a tag that reads “The Blairster” will probably be riding around the Tech campus real soon! Or did ol’ Cecil give him enough money for a Maybach?

We have the makings of a dream team already on offense, but not so good on defense. The triple option almost killed us this year and it will be around for years to come. We have good defensive players but they can’t stop the triple option. Maybe we’ll do better with it next year, but I don’t see a dream team happening ’till we have a solid defense.

Why would talented kids want to lose to Florida EVERY year by 15 points and also lose to Auburn, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tenn, Bama and LSU. Go to any other school in the nation and don’t collect garbage for a living, like most 4-5 star recruits that regress at thUGA. Play for a real coach and fans that understand football, not just shop at wal-mart in Bogart, GA and buy groceries at piggly wiggly.

Any of you thinking the only measure of a QB is td’s, yards, need to get a clue. #1 measure is wins/losses–measures his leadership. #2 is how he plays against winning teams. #3 is how he plays under pressure: 3rd downs, 4th quarter, red zone, 3rd and long, etc.
Murray fails all 3.
Can’t wait for Georgia to experience a REAL QB who does it ALL: TD’s, yards, wins, leadership, beats great teams, & clutch play.

Any QB on the Georgia roster could have won against La Lafayette, Idaho State, Vanderbilt, Tenn, Ga Tech, and Kentucky. Most Georgia QB’s beat Colorado too. Not 1 team of those 6 wins even has a winning record.
Georgia needs a QB who can win against the Florida, Arkansas, South Carolina, Miss St, & Auburn’s.
Murray had his chance. He choked.
Time for someone else: Lemay, Mason, Gray, let’s get this QB problem fixed.
QB play was the #1 reason Georgia went 6-6.

Tenn, Ga Tech, Kentucky, all went 6-6. Average teams. But defense won those games with 3-4 TO’s in each game, any QB on the Georgia roster could win those games with 3-4 defensive TO’s.

It is often argued that GT students have much higher IQs than UGA students.
I only look at the facts: O’Leary had a bogus ( like Obama he lied ) resume and the entire GT administration and football family embraced him. Most professional organizations do a back ground search on prospective employees. Maybe at GT they are not aware of such hi tech things as a um, ah, background search.

Murray is an AA QB and it will only get better. Scam Newton and his bag of $$ and Garcia and McElroy and Mallett will all be gone and Murray will be top QB dog in the SEC, baby. Florida? They will be stuck with Brantley and CUM and his “pain” pills.
PS Did you hear how dumb CPJ was to throw the ball vs UGA in 09 AND AGAIN in 2010 when he has that number one rushing team? Hmmm? Man, is he dumb. He thinks losing by 8 looks better on his resume than to lose by 1. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHHAHAHAHAHA

Step 4: Lose to Auburn/Alabama/South Carolina.
Step 5: Lose to a lowly ranked team (ie: Kentucky).
Step 6: Beat Tech.
Step 7: Go to a pitiful bowl game.
Step 8: Claim superiority because of one SEC team in NC game.

Marcus- while I agree with you that Lemay is a special talent and I am excited about him coming to Athens it will be hard to de-throne a QB who finished with a 162.7 QB rating 62% completion for 2500 yds and 24/6 as a freshman campaign. If not for Lattimore Murray would be winning SEC frosh of the year.
In short, Murray did everything possible for a QB to do to win games. He can’t run block, hit holes, and tackle.
Dan Marino was a HOF on a team that never won a championship. Does that make him the wrong choice at the QB position??
