Murray matches a Shockley record; Richt vs. O’Leary in Liberty Bowl?

Cleaning out the notebook before departing the blog for a brief vacation:

  • I mentioned a couple of days ago that Aaron Murray needs just one touchdown pass in Georgia’s bowl game to match Matthew Stafford’s single-season school record of 25. What’s more, as Will Brown of Athens pointed out to me and UGA confirmed, Murray already has matched D.J. Shockley’s UGA single-season record of 28 touchdowns accounted for. Murray, like Shockley in 2005, has thrown for 24 and run for four. Pretty impressive rookie season, to say the least. (Click here for more on Murray’s season for the record books.)
  • Mark Richt, speaking on his radio show Monday night about Marlon Brown’s recovery of a Brandon Boykin fumble on the kickoff return following the Georgia Tech touchdown/missed PAT that cut Georgia’s lead to 35-34: “That might have been the biggest play of the game for Marlon Brown to recover that fumble.”
  • As I mentioned Sunday, Georgia’s expected Liberty Bowl appearance would bring an interesting storyline — the opposing coach. Either Central Florida’s George O’Leary, the former Georgia Tech coach, or SMU’s June Jones, the former Atlanta Falcons coach. O’Leary was 3-4 vs. Georgia as Tech’s head coach from 1995 through 2001. Jones’ Hawaii team lost to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl following the 2007 season. Central Florida and SMU meet Saturday for the Conference USA championship and Liberty Bowl berth.
  • Georgia ended the regular season ranked No. 18 in the nation in turnover margin – a 100-spot improvement from last year’s No. 118. The Bulldogs are plus 10 in turnovers this season, compared to minus 16 last season.
  • Todd Grantham on Justin Houston’s stay-or-go choice: “He can be one of the most dominant players in college football next year if he chooses to do that. If he doesn’t, then he’s obviously going to be a guy who’s going to play at the next level and he’ll just continue to get better.” Grantham said he doesn’t know if Houston will return for his senior season or enter the 2011 NFL draft. “We’ll just see as we move forward what’s best for him,” Grantham said, “and we’ll kind of go from there.”
  • Players will lift weights and run this week, but Richt said bowl practices won’t begin before next week.  The bulk of Georgia’s bowl practices will come after fall-semester final exams are completed on Dec. 15.

Today’s other posts:

UGA adds Florida Atlantic to 2012 football schedule — at cost of $1 million.

Richt tells callers he’s staying and wants ‘Dream Team’ recruits to join him.

I love how the coaches are selling Houston on being one of the best defenders in the county (wasn’t he already a semi-finalist or finalist for this?), but don’t mention that about A.J. Hate to see Green gone, but that’s the easiest decision I have seen in the college vs. pro in a long time.

Green and Houston will stay. Next year will be a special year for the Dawgs…I just feel it. After we sign some very special Freshman for next year the Dawgs will dominate.

Did CPJ order commemorative Moral Victory rings to be made since the AJC “beat” writers claim that the 42-34 score was not indicative of the actual game? Should we simply ignore NINE out of TEN wins in row by the Dawgs?

Come back and have to sell your Liberty Bowl jerseys or leave to Buy your Mom a house. That is the easiest decision ever. These guys don’t want to take even easy classes anymore. They will enroll(just in case) for the next semester decide in Feb. to leave.

See the defense is already getting better. Grantham will get this thing nailed down in the off season and get the right people on the field. He will also teach the secondary to go cover the man standaing alone waving his arms yelling for the ball.

Congrats to Murray on a fine rookie season. Can’t wait to see who the got to WR’s are next year. Durham and Green were awesome this year.

Green and Houston are gone; but, But, the ole Southern Cal transfer and the 4.33 LB Samuel will be there. As for the offense, Murray is about to make Orson Charles a star. He is without a doubt the most accurate passer I have seen at UGA. Is it 24 to 6 TD’s to ints? And, the thing most people who put down Ga love to point out is, he is undersized..well, that size limitation will probably keep him in school, and away from the NFl til his senior year. Hope ya’ll enjoy three more years of number eleven.

So, the Liberty Bowl might not be upper tier, but I was just randomly in Memphis around New Year’s last year (last minute point at a map road trip), and it was quite nice. Great blues and BBQ, and with all the tourists downtown and on Beale, it felt safe. The MLK civil rights museum at the old Lorraine Motel was definitely worth a visit. So, don’t discount the destination just because the bowl isn’t one of the biggies. Drivable distaqnce, and WAY better than Charlotte/Nashville/Birmingham/Shreveport.

I know it seems a foregone conclusion that AJ will leave but I sense this kid made a mistake that he does not want to live with. He owes the Georgia Nation one full year of his talent. We have been there for him throughout his career. I know it is all about the $$ but at some point some gifted kid like this will rise up and be the next Tebow with his school. Georgia deserves it and AJ will be better for it!!

going back to the game, I keep hearing from tech fans that if blair doesn’t miss that field goal, GT would of won. let me clear the air for you tech fans(know you trolls will be on this blog sooner or later), After the worst kick ever, UGA took the ball and drove down the field. We were in field goal range and decided that we should go for it to waste some time. it turned out to be a bad call and we turned the ball over. had blair made the kick we would of kicked a field goal instead and we would of taken the lead. Our KO coverage had been pretty good all night and would prob stop Tech at the 25 or so. my point, the kick didn’t cost tech the game. tech got the ball back with the chance to win the game but since they lack a decent passing attack that wasn’t happening as the dawgs CRUSHED that attempt. then we score(nice call by johnson). tech has a chance to tie but as i stated before tech’s passing attack is awful and we stopped them again. See tech fans, you had two chances to win and tie the game, you did neither. We won stop acting like yall should of won. Hey Saint Simons 42-34 suck on that for a year. oh and one more thing, WE STILL RUN THIS STATE!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, before we make fun of kids leaving early for the pros, lets think about when we were college juniors. If at some big job fair, some company had offered you a job at a million dollars a year and said you could retire in 10 years, we would all have jumped on it. Not many people get college degrees for educational edification anymore, it’s to be competitive in the job market, and MOST of us really only work to make money. So, these top tier kids get offered a multimillion dollar job/contract with maybe half the money up front guaranteed…it would be crazy not to take it.

Nashville is much better than Memphis IMO, but both are fun towns that are 0nly about 4-5 hours away. Charlotte is a Big City more like Atlanta, but cleaner.

as a live country music fan, i don’t think Memphis is better than Nashville. Lots of places there to go have a beer and listen to some good music…the NFL made a pretty big announcement, looks like they’re getting ready for a lockout….if you would have told me we would be number 18 in TO ratio and our freshman QB would have a record breaking year back in August, i would have said we’d be playing in Atlanta this weekend…something still just doesn’t add up.. i just really hope Bean Anderson and Geathers can make a huge difference next year on the DL. that’s where i say our biggest issues are. Kelin Johnson said it best, a 3-4 don’t work against a good ground game..

Personally I think if their ball hog #1 QB had played they would have lagged behind by 14 points. The best thing that happened to them was to play the other QB. Dont kid yourself. Nesbitt can always be counted on to drop the ball or call his own number.

You sound like an Obama voter, going all optomistic on us. AJ may be sorry for his mistake, but he sold his jersey, not his brain. Why would he want to come back to a middling team next year, when he can be living large in the NFL.

Whoa Nelly! Barring a certain lockout in the NFL, A.J. Green is as good as gone, and brother he will be sorely missed. Murray is a special talent, but just who is he going to throw to next year? Couple that with two mediocre running backs, and our comparatively easy record is about the only thing we have going for us. I’ve been a fan since the Richard Appleby to Gene Washington play that killed the Gators, but next year looks like more of the same old same old. In other words, 7-5 or maybe 8-4. It just takes too long to turn a battleship around.

The bowl system is a joke. Tenn or UK is prob going to Nashville because they are closer than where most UGA fans live. Its not about a good bowl match up or who beat who, its all about money and how that city can generate a lot of it. we beat both teams easily and they’re facing better teams, what a f ing joke

pray for a lockout. green is gone, houston probably is, and boykin might be. if houston and boykin come back, we’ve got a fighting chance to have a pretty good defense next year…

but jackbull is right: the major problem on defense is the lack of a true nose guard. bean and kwame have got to step up next year and clog the middle, or we’re going to have trouble with the running game again. i do like the idea of jarvis jones and richard samuel joining robinson and dowtin (who really came on at the end of the year) at ILB.

Can’t even begin to predict anymore who stays and who goes. I stopped guessing on this after Knowshon left. He seemed to thoroughly enjoy the college experience but the money was just too much. I personally feel the rules need to change though. If you’re given a 4 year scholarship and then leave early, the scholarship money gets paid back.

At a lost for words on how disappointing the season has been for UGA.

1. The 3/4 defense was new – and it showed ….. and still shows.
– maybe slight improvement on pass defense.
– do not see any improvement in run defense.

Put it this way – given the same situation today – as we were going into the 4th quarter against SC or MS ST – would we see a different outcome? I am not so sure. Those teams controlled us and ran it down our throats. Even Colorado was successful.

2. Even though UGA’s staff knew the 3/4 defense was a work in progress – the Offensive game plan was built around “protecting” Aaron Murray.
Meaning – let’s go conservative for the first half of the season.

So let me get this right – we knew our defense was going to be an issue – so we decided to go conservative on the Offensive game planning – behind an OL that was pretty much average at best.

The results speak for themselves:
1-4 – with losses to South Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi State and COLORADO ……yes – frigging COLORADO – the worst B12 team out there.

Thank GOD Tennessee sucked this year.

The worst Florida team in a decade – and we could not beat them.

Hindsight maybe 20/20 – but frigging common sense on the Offensive game plan would have at least won us a couple of games.
– Where were the screens?
– Where was the T/E drags and 10/15 yard out patterns?
– Where were the wheel routes?
– If anything – we are decent at pass protecting.

During Richts best years – it seems that we passed to set up the run.

I am disgusted with a 6-6 record.

I am disgusted with yet another defense that gave up 6 games of 30 points or more.

We were a better team last year with Coach Martinez and our pitiful turnover ratio.

I will always root for UGA – and Richt’s leash needs to be short – extremely short in 2011. Ray Goff had a 9-3 and 10-2 record in back to back years – but turned into a 5 – 6 win coach.

Richt had an extra game this year to get his 6th win – without the buy a win – UGA would be 5-6. Unacceptable.

Hey – I WANT Richt to be successful – but he has been passed by as he became a CEO coach.
And we finished 8th best in the SEC this year – 3rd in the SEC East.
In 2009 – we had the same SEC East record as Tennessee – but lost to them head to head. Kiffin beat us ……KIFFIN!!!

Like I said – I WANT Richt to be successful – but if 6,7,8 wins is all that he can give us – then we need to change up the leadership and give another promising young coach an opportunity. We certainly are not beating Florida with Richt, we certainly are not winning the SEC East with Richt, we have lost the national respect he built up over the last 3 years.

Bear Bryant had 3 bad years:
– 1968 – 8-3 – no big deal – but BAMA was used to better.
– 1969 – 6-5 – not good
– 1970 – 6-5-1 – Bama was ready to part ways – but was patient

Then in 1971 – Alabama went 11-1.

We suck
