Richt says he hasn’t been approached by Miami, ‘absolutely’ plans to stay at UGA

(Updated 6 p.m.)

Georgia coach Mark Richt said late this afternoon that he has not been approached about the coaching job at Miami, his alma mater, and that he “absolutely” expects to remain the Bulldogs’ coach next season.

South Florida newspapers today mentioned Richt among possible candidates for the Miami opening that was created with Saturday night’s firing of coach Randy Shannon. Earlier this month, the Denver Post reported that Colorado would like to speak with Richt about its coaching vacancy.

“I’ve got the same answer for [the Miami speculation] as I had for the other one: Georgia is my home, and it’s where I want to finish my career,” Richt said.

Pressed on whether he would entertain the possibility of the Miami job if approached, Richt replied: “Just like I’ve been saying, man, Georgia’s my home, and that’s where I want to be. I don’t think you’ve got to go any farther than that.”

The Miami Herald today listed Richt among “potential candidates” to replace Shannon. The Palm Beach Post listed Richt among “possible replacements.”

The speculation was not surprising. Richt is a graduate of Miami, where he played quarterback under coach Howard Schnellenberger. Richt is 96-33 in 10 seasons as Georgia’s coach.

When the Miami job last was open after the 2006 season, Richt was mentioned as a possible candidate before immediately saying he was not interested.

Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity has said Richt will return as the Bulldogs’ coach next season.

Richt, who fired three assistant coaches in the week following last year’s victory over Georgia Tech, was asked today if he is considering staff changes now. He said he is not.

He expressed support for offensive coordinator and play caller Mike Bobo.

“If I’m not mistaken, we broke some kind of school record with [seven] consecutive games of over 30 points, and a lot of really good things happened offensively,” Richt said. “The bottom line is whoever calls plays is going to get critiqued, going to get criticized. It’s just the nature of the beast.”

Lets all hope he stays where he is! He has been a great coach and WILL turn us back into a championship team. He got us the Quarterback we needed, the new defense we needed (although it still needs work), and he WILL get us the running back we need. Hopefully we can keep AJ and Houston one more year and if so……..WATCH OUT!

If I may step in as Devil Advocate for a moment. Bulldogs score when Tech was unable to prevent home team from bleeding all time off clock. Instead of certain triumph point difference is eight points (one possession) with decent time remaining. UGA defense unable to slow down Yellow Jackets all night. Suppose Atlanta guys drove for TD then converted conversion for two points? Suppose Bulldogs lost in OT? Final 5-7 record. No bowl appearance. How kind would comments be about Mark Wretch today? I say if Miami wants Wretch then let him go! With my blessings. Just make sure he packs his Bible plus all his assistants except the defensive coordinator. Even though he, too, is on my short list. Not a surprise, the next 72 hours are going to be the key. If it happens it will be swift. McGarity needs to be ready and have MSU Athletic Director’s number on speed dial for permission to speak with Dan Mullen. The familiarity that the two have and the success Mullen has had in 2 seasons at MSU along with his apparent key to the Florida offense make him a logical replacement if it comes to that.

Please, let them hire Mike Bobo instead, and take our strength coach with him. 2 different trainers in Athens who are not associated with the football team this year stated that Van Hallenger is a key problem for UGA. He has not kept up with advancements that other teams are using for their players. Maybe this is part of why OUR top recruits for offensive line and our entire defense seem to underperform in their careers compared to our rivals’ top players………

As far as Bobo goes, he just needs to go! Even Coach Richt said last night on the radio that we “probably should have thrown the ball more in the 2nd half”. Murray was 15-19, while our running game was struggling as usual. WHY wait until AFTER the game to realize we needed to STICK with what was WORKING!?! It’s not the first time that one of our coaches has made post-game remarks like that. Our playcalling is too inconsistent. We need a Top 10 offensive coordinator to be a Top 10 team again. Nobody can truthfully say that Bobo is one of the 10 best coordinators…. GO DAWGS!!

Okefenokee,

I am with you, if the marriage is going to end, this seems like the easiest way to do it. Richt surely cannot be happy with the recent addition of Boise to a season that is going to already require him to win at least 9 games. Not saying he is not capable, but at this point he will have to look strongly at Miami. It is going to come down also to money and the “U” is historically cheap when it comes to coaching hires. It will be very interesting indeed.

Hello. You are presented with a once in a lifetime window of opportunity. The chance to coach at the university where you competed as a player. Such openings are sent from above. Now is not the time to drag your feet. You have worn out your welcome in Athens. You are aware of that. Sideline apathy has infected team for last several seasons. Your body is in Athens but not your heart. If you are sticking around because of finances that is wrong. Bulldog Nation deserves winner. Not breakeven or worse finishes. Please do the right thing. I think CMR needs to put in a call to Randy Shannon about our DC position, he was the Broyles Award winner for the nation’s top assistant coach in 2001, while serving as Miami’s DC under head coach Larry Coker!

The Todd Grantham route is taking too long to develop, he doesn’t seem to have a clue! Even recruiting the right players for the 3-4 will take 2-3 years at best.

If new AD McGarity were to attend 10 Bulldog functions, he would come away with a keen observation right now at this juncture: 45-55% of the Bulldog Nation desire a head coach change. Period. AD Greg McGarity does not want that % at all. Why? It reveals a badly, badly divided nation. It also suggests that $$$ contribtions could be adversely impaced and he does not want that. Dr. Adams does not desire that situation either.

UGA and Richt are at the fabled croass roads ………………..Richt can move on with no hard feelings and we can get get MSU’s Mullins ( florida might too ) and move forward. Mullins just might bring a kid or two along with him. He coachesI like AU’s Chizk) hard nosed SEC stuyle ball, whereas, Richt is still in the old FSU ACC model of the 90s. There with exciting O, he could survive with athletic but weak D lines. Now, even his O is predictable.

Colorado might grab CPJ ………………..as they won the 1990 NC with a triple option O. He wants to leave the ACC in the worst way, I have heard.

Don’t think that Richt will be offered the Miami job. I think most Miami fans and boosters will want to get someone with more recent success (doesn’t he have a buyout clause in UGA’s favor if he leaves UGA for another school?) That being said, it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if he were to go to Miami. Miami has some $, but don’t they have to pay the old coach for three more years, UGA’s buyout penalty and then $2.5 to $3.0 per year to get Richt to jump? Seems like a lofty price. If it actually does happen, seems like a big favor to UGA which then doesn’t have to buy HIM out which it would with a messy firing.

UGA won’t fire him this season, but this appears to be a “dead man walking” situation to me. How many coaches who are given ONE MORE YEAR to turn things around, actually do. Almost all are fired the following year after another bad season. I can’t think of a single college coach who was given one more year and then went on to have a very successful season and kept his job.

Seems to me this time next year, pretty much everyone will be calling for his head and UGA will fire him after another 4-6 loss season. Miami could help prevent this if they actually make him an offer.

As one who was a Mark Richt devotee for lo these many years (as it been ten already? Seems like a hundred), I finally gave up on him this year. When confronted with un-disciplined youth and kids who couldn’t stay out of trouble, he needed to ‘crack the whip.’ What did he do instead? Held hands with them and sang feely-good hymns and prayed with them. As a devout Christian, I believe in that therapy and will do it myself; however, we’re talking about untrained minds, critical situations that need stern behavioral management and more than a soft approach…AND, we are talking about winning as a cohesive unit working with each other instead of trying to outdrink the next guy, trying to out-”bad-ass” the next one he argues with in a bar and those others that have no and show no respect for the team as a whole.
His philosophy will not work with that crew in Miami, as I think they may just be worse than better than the miscreants he how has had to deal with.

My biggest question to Richt supporters is HOW will he turn it around next year? Of course they don’t have any answers. Green and Durham will be gone and Murray could actually digress with no weapons on the outside. And after last nights defensive performance I have zero faith in Grantham. So what gives? If Richt stays he truly is a dead man walking. So why delay the inevitable? If Miami comes after Richt hard he should have a sit down with McGarrity and get an idea of his expectations for next season. Maybe that really would be a win-win for both parties.

The upcoming game with Boise State will assist UGA in having an oustanding recruiting class. If we do not have a fabulous class, then that will be the first nail in CMR’s 2011 coffin. Most great HS jocks think that they are FL bound and the NATIONAL stage of the kick off classic vs a “national power” Boise State, is the perfect scenario. Can CMR capitalize on that????

Time will tell. I also think that thtis is the perfect enticement to a new football coach at UGA. Win it and early on, he is beloved by the Bulldog Nation. Lost and oh well, we need to get better.

It is true though, hard to believe its been 10 years. CMR came in as the hot young coach and withing the blink of an eye had the UGA faithful seeing Sugar falling from the sky once again. Now CMR comes across as comfortable and at time disinterested into what is happening to the program. This is what happens when a coach has success so quickly and almost effortlessly. I have been one on the get rid of Richt bandwagon, out of frustation I guess. But as the season has progessed I have changed my way of thinking. Look at the facts, we have scored a lot of points this year and been in EVERY game. Our problem is NO defense. Think about it. If we had half the D we had from the VanGorder era we would be in the NC picture IMHO. I want to believe Grantham will turn this around, but I’m not sure. Maybe we just need time to get the right personel in place for the 3-4. But even so, I still saw the same problem on D last night, no adjusting, just like Willie. So that begs the question, is it the cordinator or the head man? Anyway the bottom line is that we need a defense. I’ve even been on the fire Bobo wagon, but the offense is fine. The big thing to me is, can Richt field a defense weather it be with Grantham or anyone else? That is the big factor weather Richt should stay or not. I would like to see him stay now. I dont see Mullen coming over, and who else would we get? I would rather see Richt than an unproven cordinator like Muschamp or Smart. Unproven as a head coach that is.

The anti-Richt comments in this blog are almost laughable, coming as they do from a base that knows a hell of a lot less about football than they think they do. We actually ran the ball pretty well in the second half once we went to cutbacks and quit trying to jam it up the gut when Tech was poised to stop the straight ahead. Part of the problem in the second half was that the defense was severely gassed and may have had a hard time stopping my mother (who has been dead for 12 years). Giving the D a blow was part of the reason for staying with the run and trying to run some clock. As for those who say that grantham has proved tat the 3-4 dosen’t work–HELLO, its his first year with a bunch of guys who are not ideally suited to run this scheme. Look for big improvements next year (and you might check Alabama’s first year record and 3-4 defensive stats in Saban’s first year). CMR does need to adapt to the changing character of college football, but a pro-style offense still works in college ball (and our offense was the bright spot comming down the stretch–even in the losses to FL and Auburn.
I think that CMR (unlike many Ga bloggers) has more character than to cut and run when facing a little adversity. And guess what happens to what is shaping up to be a nice recruiting class if recruits become overly concerned (rightly or wrongly) about Richt’s tenure at Georgia.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that if Richt goes, I would rather see him go on our terms with a replacement already in mind. Rather than him leaving for Miami and us reeling for a replacement. Remeber when Richt took over? I liked Donnan but knew when replacing him that it was a move up. If he leaves like this, I dont get that feeling. McGarity needs to have a plan in motion. Keep him or have someone already lined up that will be a move forward.

“Ashamed” —– Why get rid of Bobo? His playcalling (which reflects their game plan) is inconsistent. KNOWING that our defense is not SEC-caliber, the only way for us to beat good or mediocre teams is to outscore them. Bobo is too predictable (for example, after a 1st down incompletion, he runs up the middle 90% of the time on 2nd down, leaving us with a lot of 3rd and longs). Also, he fails to notice what is working and fails to stick with it. (for example, turning to our struggling running game in the 2nd half after Murray lit up Tech’s secondary in the 1st half – even Coach Richt said we should have thrown more in the 2nd half). Last year, when we blew a big lead and lost to Kentucky, our offense died in the 2nd half. When asked about the success Orson Charles had in that game, Bobo agreed and said “I guess we should have kept running that play”. They NEVER ran the pass play to Charles ONCE in the 2nd half. It’s that stubborn lack of recognition of what’s working that kills our offensive momentum. IF we had a solid defense, we could afford to fail more often offensively. The Auburn game was lost the second that we stopped matching them TD for TD. Florida has a new wrinkle each year that we play their offense, and they kill us with it. WE, on the other hand, insist on trying the WEAKEST part of our offense instead of sticking with the STRONGEST.

Last example: Bobo should have coached our backs that IF Tech were to let us score on that last drive, we should run to the 1 and take a knee. Then, let the clock run down and score or take a knee. Tech would never have gotten the ball back. But, NO, we are the outcoached ones……………… I could have given more examples, but why keep typing!! Go Dawgs!!!

Hoops Dawg, you’re the one that is laughable and know nothing about football.Everbody knows that we don’t have the right personnel to run the 3-4 defense. However, that had nothing to do with the fact that Grantham just stood there all night and made zero adjustments. Even the announcers were flabbergasted by the fact that we stayed in the same alignments and continued to get gashed. Bob Davie even said he could figure out how to slow down the dive play by having your defensive ends move down the line when the ball is snapped. Grantham was made a fool of last night and that had nothing to with personnel.

I think it’s the perfect opportunity for Richt to save face as well as the University of Georgia by taking the Miami job. I don’t see the underclassmen coming up and being any better than the starters this year at UGA. That means we are looking at a 6 to 7 win season next year also. It will be tough to explain to ESPN analyst how a 90 + win coach could be let go after 11 years but there is too much off field issues as well as not wanting to change coaches when it’s needed. The most important thing UGA needs in the offseason is a change in the strength and conditioning program. The players are in shape but they are still being blown off the ball by the opposing teams offensive lines.

Oh good grief. After reading some of these blog entries, part of me couldn’t blame Richt for taking another job.

Folks, THERE IS A REASON why Richt’s name keeps coming up when other schools are looking for a head coach – he’s is a DAMN FINE COACH.

Those of us who remember the Dooley days also remember when a part of the fan base were calling for his job. Now, they want to name half the campus after him.

Looking at this past season and the number of points this offense has put up, makes you wonder what would have happened if they had a defense to go along with it. Take a couple of touchdowns off the board of the opponents and give UGA’s offense 2-3 more possessions per game and you’re talking 10-11 wins this season.

Is Grantham the answer? I don’t know. Give him another season and then evaluate.

There is one area that I wish Richt would address and that is the offensive line. No reason why a program the calibre of UGA shouldn’t have one of the top OL in the country. At this level, you sign a crop of big boys every year, hang a redshirt on them, put them in the weight room for three years, and then you will have an annual rotation of juniors and seniors who have thousands of reps under your system.

John Gruden is first on the Miami list, followed by Tommy Tubberville, Mark Richt, Gary Patterson, and Dan Mullen. Rumor has it that they are trying to lure Gruden with a 3 million a year offer.

Mark Richt is all Bulldog, he has not finished the drill and he will cost Miami more than the 3 million, that is being offered to Gruden!

Georgia’s problem is with the Defense! Todd Grantham has been a complete failure as a DC! He might improve with experience or with his 3-4 players over time but MR does not have that much time! Make the call to Randy Shannon now! Great young experienced defensive coach, a good roll model for our athlete’s to look up to, and then there is the recruiting base of south FL that would automatically open up with him on our coaching staff!

http://community.gainesvilletimes.com/blogs/detail/2171/

as much as it pains me to say this, there needs to be a change at the top with the University of Georgia’s football program. That may come as a shock to hear from those that know me best.

As a University of Georgia graduate and longtime supporter of Mark Richt, I’ve felt that he was on track to guide the program to the promise land and its first national title since I was wearing diapers in 1980.

However, the way this season has transpired and a general overview of the program has given me a drastically different perspective, and I’ve come to believe that the Bulldogs will not be a regular national contender as long as Richt is in charge.

Don’t get me wrong, I applaud Mark Richt for his outstanding character and the principled Christian influence he’s been for the young men he’s worked with. However, if that is his singular goal, a career in the ministry may be more well suited.

I want Georgia (6-6) to have a coach that is going to groom a team that will lean on the opposition, so by the time the fourth quarter rolls around, they’re ready to submit. Right now, we have a Georgia program that barely survived against Georgia Tech, despite twice leading by two touchdowns. That’s not acceptable in my book.

As far as I see it, there’s no excuse for team’s to be able to come into Sanford Stadium, especially a marginal Georgia Tech program, and almost pull out the upset due to our own special teams errors, poor play calling and a boneheaded, uncontested touchdown run by Washaun Ealey with less that 2 minutes left to play that gave the Yellow Jackets the ball back.

Before anybody gets the wrong idea, my frustration with Georgia’s program extends far beyond last night’s win against Georgia Tech.

My main concern is that Georgia’s recruiting has left the tracks. Yes, we have some fantastic athletes in the program with A.J. Green (who we’re going to miss greatly next season), Justin Houston, Aaron Murray, Kris Durham (a steal for the NFL team that gets him in the draft) and a budding star in Alec Ogletree.

However, far too often, I’ve seen the Bulldogs in the past two or three years bring athletes in on the recommendation of recruiting services and how well they perform in a scouting combine. I feel like this all started in earnest with Georgia’s 2005 recruiting class when the Bulldogs only brought in two home run players (Jeff Owens and Kade Weston). As I studied that season’s recruiting class a few weeks back and how they panned out by the time they graduated from Georgia in 2009, more than a fair number of these never made a real impact with the program.

For that, I blame the coaching staff.

We aren’t bringing in the right athletes that give us a realistic chance of being a national contender. Then on the flip side, there’s great high school athletes, some locally, that Georgia gives up on. Want an example? Gainesville’s A.J. Johnson. This kid is a stud and right in the backyard of the Bulldogs, but for some unknown reason, they didn’t think he was worthy of offering a scholarship.

Unbelievable!

I’ve talked with other friends and sportswriters who have the same impression of Georgia’s program: slowly, but surely, it sank into mediocrity. If you’re a fan that is content with the program going 6-6 and no real signs of improvement on the horizon, then be my guess. However, I feel like next year is going to be an unpleasant wake-up call without Green (see this year’s four-game losing streak for proof) and Houston (probably a first-round pick in the NFL) bolting out of Athens.

Also, I think life in the SEC is getting tougher than easier. I’m of the belief that it’s the toughest conference in the country, and as a result, draws the best coaches and players. Just think, in addition to the constant powers, you also have Mississippi State and Arkansas, programs that are much improved and will be battling for league titles sooner than later.

Supporters of Richt point to his record (96-33) and two league titles as proof that he should stay. While I’ll be the first to agree that he’s made his mark, two SEC titles and three conference championship game appearances since he arrived in 2001 doesn’t exactly instill fear in Alabama, LSU, Florida and Auburn.

My fear that the program is slowly eroding started immediately after Georgia was at its highest point under Richt with its victory over Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl at the end of the 2007 season.

In the three years since, we’ve gone 10 wins in 2008, 8 wins in 2009 and 6 wins so far this season with the chance of a low-level bowl victory still up in the air. To make things even more discouraging, our quality victories this season are non-existant, unless you count Tennessee and Georgia Tech. I don’t.

The silver lining to this season is that we have a new defensive coordinator, who may be able to untangle the mess that Willie Martinez left at Georgia. The Bulldogs also cut down on penalties and turnovers this season, which you would think could translate into a better record.

However, it didn’t. Georgia fans are sitting on a bitter-sweet feeling of beating Georgia Tech, but only becoming bowl eligible with a .500 record.

I don’t think it should be acceptable to finish .500 in a state with so much high school talent as the state of Georgia. I believe you could craft a national title contender by recruiting within the borders of our state alone.

Even though Mark Richt is a pleasant human being, who has made every effort to make Georgia a national contender, I just don’t see it happening on his watch again. The best college programs in the country are already lightyears ahead of Georgia in terms of talent, stability and general buzz around the program.

If the Bulldogs are going to be a national power again, it’s going to take some sweeping changes and it all starts at the top.

I hated going through this year and watching that defense, but KNEW it was going to be like this when we hired our DC. It will be better next year, but not great. It takes at least 3 years to get on track to compete in the SEC defensively. You fellow Dawgs with small memories kill me!

Again, for those who don’t understand, Coach Bobo is NOT one of the Top 10 offensive coordinators in the country, and if we want to be there again, we need an upgrade. Yes, we have scored a lot of points in the last half of the season. The PROBLEM is that we are PREDICTABLE with our play calling and that we STRAY from what is working. A good offense, like in anything else, has to MAXIMIZE its STRENGTHS and overcome its weaknesses. One more time — in the 1st half, we threw 14 times and shredded Tech’s secondary. 2nd half — we threw 5 times and ran inconsistently. Tech NEVER stopped our passing game. WE stopped our own offense by abandoning our passing game! Yes, running some clock to keep Tech’s offense off the field would have been nice, but our running game is NOT very good on a consistent basis. Again, IF we had an SEC-caliber (or Conference USA caliber) defense, we could afford bogging down offensively. BUT, we DON’T. We have to go into every game with a plan to OUT SCORE our opponents. Bobo does not call games that way. We got lucky that 42 was enough to win, and some of those were points due to Tech’s turnovers. Bobo is TOO PREDICTABLE and TOO WILLING TO ABANDON WHAT IS WORKING WELL……. Keep Coach Richt, and get rid of Van Hallenger, who is killing us with our conditioning. Van Hallenger’s a bigger issue than Bobo, even. Go Dawgs…!

UGA is stuck with CMR lets hope that the new recruits and the redshirts are as good as advertised. My last comments on Bobo — yes, we scored plenty of points over the last half of the season. BUT, we leave opportunities on the field by not focusing on what is working WELL. It’s only one example of many, but against Tech we gave away opportunities by abandoning our passing game that was TORCHING Tech’s defense. We could have scored 50 and made the game a bit easier. We could not out score Auburn or Florida. We were inept offensively early in the season, and NOT just due to no AJ. Our play calling was weak in the first 5 games. To Bobo’s credit, he has cut down on the 2nd and 10 runs up the middle after an incomplete 1st down pass. Other than that, his playcalling still needs improvement. When did Tech stop AJ Green, Orson Charles, or Kris Durham? Answer: NEVER. WE did by abandoning the passing game that was shredding Tech. We got lucky………. UNTIL we have a good defense, we HAVE to score every single point possible — 30 wasn’t enough to beat Florida. 31 wasn’t enough to beat Auburn. That is Bobo’s key weakness….. we waste drives by abandoning what’s working best………

Yes, our defense stinks, and I think part of that may be addressed by recruiting for Grantham’s scheme. But, we will continue to be manhandled defensively and will continue to have an inconsistent offensive line until Van Hallenger is gone. When other members of his profession point out him refusing to keep up with what other teams are doing, he needs to change or be replaced….

It was UGLY and statistically we lost that game, but when the clock read 00:00, UGA had more points on the board. Fan focus needs to be on what can change.
1. Bobo needs to go back to QBs and CMR needs to pick up a clip board again.
2. New Strength and Conditioning Staff
3. Dust off the 90’s “Charlie Ward” Style offense and impliment it into our ultra conservative
4. Grantham needs to impliment some aspects of the 4-3 when necessary.
5. (Should be 1st) Must have a top ten recruiting class. Stop losing the state’s top linemen to South Carolina and Auburn.

Next year’s schedule is setting up in CMR’s favor.
Boise State – CMR has all off season to prepare for them. No excuse for losing.
S. Carolina – they lose an awful lot of seniors, but its a toss up.
Coastal Carolina – Win
Ole Miss – Win
Miss State – at home, Dawgs should get revenge
UT – their program is still down, should be another win
Vandy – Win
Open
UF – 2 weeks to prepare, if Grantham has the Defense in sync we should win this game.

The reality is that if Richt stays at GA and goes 7 – 5 next year and gets fired, nobody will want him. Since there are possibilities out there this year – he might oughta leave now.

Great job Richt. 6-6! You’re the seventh highest paid coach in college football and you are mediocre at best. You have not won big games with good talent. Get the hell out of here.

I’ve argued with several Dawg fans, who have become fair weather fans, this year.
Every one of them spoke of Richt’s ouster and I told them that they’d be getting rid of the coach,
who brought the SEC Championship back to UGA and, not only that, they would be giving Tech a wide open opportunity to take advantage of the new coach.

Well, yesterday, Richt’s team proved the UGA superiority over Tech, once again and I hope this will quell any demand to throw Rich out.

However, I’ll repeat (as I have, often, this year) IF RICHT GOES, MY DAYS OF BEING A DAWG FAN ARE OVER!
I can’t imagine going to become a GT fan, but I won’t even watch that game!!

KaliDogg

Hard to believe I’m saying this but, if you’ve watched the last few games closely (last night in particular) — and I’m sure you have or you wouldn’t all be on here — there is a difference between coaching and playing on the defensive side of the ball (on offense, I’d say a good bit of the execution is there — with the glaring exception of the hyped-to-heaven O-Line — not so on defense). How many times are players (not early in the year, but now) in a position to make a play but they can’t seem to do something as fundamental as tackle the man with the ball.

Just saying (and please, disagree) it seems like, on the D side of the ball, the scheme is there but the execution isn’t. If UGA could tackle when in position to make a tackle, GT would have run the ball for a lot of yardage — that’s what they do — but nothing like the debacle UGA produced last night. Time after time, it looks like the pitch is contained, only to have a UGA player try to spin off of a blocker while the runner sprints past him — intending to tackle with his back turned, apparently. Arm tackles? I don’t have a count but might run the game back, if I have time, to count them up.

And, it’s been the same all year. I know — that’s coaching, too — but it’s something that has to be ingrained in a team over a period of time.

So, I’m throwing my hat in there in favor of Mr. Grantham. I think he’s on the right track. But, we have to recruit defense hard, find a big body for the middle (which we might actually have on the roster already — we’ll see how that develops), and hammer getting off blocks and making tackles, a lot of which is actually footwork, which you can coach, and brains, which you can’t.

As for Mr. Richt. I don’t have the answer. I watch the elite programs and merely the demeanor of their head coaches on the sidelines and there’s an obvious difference but that’s hardly enough upon which to judge a coach. We all want to hold him accountable. Which we should. What I would like to see is him demanding accountability from his assistants. How can he continue to criticize the play calling on radio shows after games and not fix it. Who’s the head coach? I thought he was.

My guess is, he’s here and we’ll see next year, when Grantham’s had a year and we see what CMR does about Bobo. But, what do I know. I’m surprised every day in this business. Note 1: Miami just went 7-5 and fired their coach. Note2: UGA had far too much talent to be a missed GT extra point from a 50-50 shot at defeat last night. Out-coached all night.

I agree with you in part, but the scheme was all wrong last night. Grantham should have put 9 guys in the box including 5 down linemen. Putting our inside linebackers 5 yards off the ball created huge gaps for Tech to run through and PJ knew it and took advantage of it.

Here is the unvarnished truth. We have WOEFUL talent on defense. Our entire defensive front is not suited to play a 3-4. They’re not big enough and they’re no where close to being strong enough. With the exception of Akeem Dent, our linebackers are dreadful. None of them would play for Alabama. Ogeltree has promise, but needs more time more strength and more confidence. Boykin has played well all year long. The rest of the DBs are a total joke. Jakar “Hitman” Hamilton… LOL, my Grandmother could kick his arse.

Grantham promised an aggressive attacking defense, what we got was a whimpering cowering bunch of fools who would rather loaf than make a hit. Daryl Gamble, give me a break – he absolutely sucks.

The bullseye has got to be on Rodney Garner, because his time has come and gone. Let him go and pursue the Miami job. Our recruiting is slipping big time.

Do you people not think that a program goes through cycles. IT has up and downs, Look at Miami, Penn state, Texas, USC, Tenn, YOU cant stay on top forever, We need to keep richt He needs to be our JOPA. I wish they wouldnt have gotten rid of DOOLEY, since dooley was forced out UGA has been lossing consistantly to FLA for 20+ years. Richt will figure out how to get UGA back on top. and IT starts with landing the right RB. Crowell. IF we land him and he turns out to be the next Hershel walker, UGA will be back on top. LOOK at S. carolina with lattimore, without him they are horrible. with him they won the SEC east. We just need to land a great RB. When UGA has an awsome running game we win.

Outside of the Herschel days, UGA ain’t won jack. You people act like the Dawgs were a powerhouse before he got here. Richt arrived, and immediately put the program on the map. It was a joke for a long time before he got here.

It doesn’t matter if he’s had a couple of bad seasons. It doesn’t matter if thy barely beat Tech. It doesn’t matter if a bunch of grown men are getting in trouble on his watch.

The guy has won a couple of SEC championships. He’s been ranked in the top freakin 3 a few times. You suckas don’t appreciate the guy. He’s 9-1 vs Tech, and 2-1 against Paul Johnson, the alleged genius. I hope he leaves UGA for Miami. Since going to the 2 division format Fla. has won 3 titles, Bama 2, LSU 2, UT 1, AU will win one this year and should have played in 04 but got left out. And then there is poor ole Georgia. Pathetic.

The only positive to leaving UGA for Miami is that its his alma mater….no other reason exists. The facilites at UM aren’t that great and they play 45 minutes north of campus in a half empty stadium. Its a very small private school with a limited number of alumni and fanbase. I think its more of a challenge to get UGA back to where they were than take the UM job. Just a couple years ago, we were on the brink of challenging for a BCS title. If he can turn this thing around that would be way more impressive than anything at UM. UM was dominant when they were independent and in the Big East. That isn’t true anymore.

Bobo’s main fault in this game was trying to run clock, early 4th, when it was obvious we couldn’t establish run & obvious Tech couldn’t stop passing game.
Same idea in Auburn game knowing you can’t stop them, you must keep foot on gas.

It would be best for all involved if Coach Richt moved on to Miami.

He knows that next year will likely be his last in Athens, anyway, and he has lost control and respect within the program, which can never be gotten back.

The knowledgeable UGA fans realize that this program will never again be successful under Richt, but there are so many sidewalk fans that are blind loyalists, that firing him will be emotionally painful.

The ideal scenario would be for Richt to quietly head out to Coral Gables and let UGA start over.

Richt is a class guy and a good coach. He has a winning record as HC and has proven that he can turn things around. This season was a terrible one and all coaches go through those at some point in their career. The last few seasons have been mediocre for the Dawgs but I truly believe that they will improve next season. I foresee AJ staying, due in part to his love for UGA and to repay fans for the debacle that led to the 4 game suspension. I also feel that he will honor his parents wishes for him to graduate and stay. With Murray and AJ (not to mention the new recruiting class), we will be SEC contenders once again. Here is how Richt would look at the U job

November 28th, 2010
4:32 pm

Richt could recruit Dade County, Palm Beach County ( Belle Glade, FL ) and Broward and maybe, if he can get home by 7PM, he might fly up to Orange County. See? The recruiting grind is diminished by two thirds. He could get Bobo to chase a couple of northern Florida kids and one or two in South Georgia.

The money for Richt now is no big deal. If he took a $1.5 cut in salary he would still be paid around $2 million per year.

Also, his Honduras faith based endeavor is CLOSER with direct flights from MIA to Honduras. This is key folks.

I say that it gets big by Weds and by Friday, he is gone.

UGA? We have a fabulous core of great kids to re build with an Aron Murray will only be a soph laong with several others. This effort will not be a replay of the 2009 effort to find a D co ordinator. Last year most local coaches KNEW that CMR was in trouble.

If CMR decides to take this job, we need to shoot for Chris Peterson or Bud Foster. I know Foster doesn’t have any head coaching experiance, but he had been around Frank Beamer (who is an excellent coach) for a long time. He would bring a tough, hard nosed attitude to our team. Him and CTG would be good together. oh, and demote Bobo back to quarterback coach

Mark Richt is an outstanding coach and asset for the University of Georgia. There is no doubt that he is putting all the pieces in place for another run at Championships.
All programs go through periods of rebuilding. One just needs to look at Florida, Alabama, Texas, USC, Tennessee, and others to see that at some point all outstanding coaches have to make adjustments. Coach Mark Richt is no different.

rincon dog, CMR was close a couple of years. While NC’s are nice I prefer CMR build a winning program. He will have Georgia back to 10 or 12 wins and winning SEC championships which is harder than winning a BCS title. Winning a BCS title is pure luck. Do you think that Boise or TCU or Oregan could survive the schedule of SEC teams year after year. No way, yet they are practically being given a BCS title.
No, I prefer to see compete at the top of the SEC year in and year out and win a few of those titles every few years. I truly believe that an SEC title carries more clout and is more difficult than a BCS title.

There is a reason that every other program in the country wants Richt and it’s the same reason that UGA is going to keep him, he’s a good coach and a better person.

Get used to his name coming up with just about every open job, it’s not news anymore.

He is very content in Athens, his family surrounds him and the majority of true Dawg fans are happy to have him as our coach.

In the end, it will be Mark Richt’s decision whether to stay or go. The AD is not going to fire him much to the dismay of some here. In the real world cooler heads usually prevail. Having said that, CMR knows or will know shortly what the expectations for next year will be. Win the SEC East, a major bowl apperance and finish in the top ten. It is then up to him to decide if he has the right personnel and tallent to accomplish that goal. If in his assessment he does not, then he either makes changes in his staff to get who can help him or he walks away while he still has some market value.

For those of you wanting to talk numbers, let’s talk these. 6-6 record this year, with wins against all bad or mediocre teams. And never forget this one: CMR is 2-8 against the Florida Gators, and he couldn’t even beat this year’s 5 loss edition. When Richt came to Georgia, he announced that one of his attributes was his ability to beat Florida on a regular basis (see with Bobby Bowden and FSU). Looks like those FSU wins over Florida were a lot more Bowden and a lot less Richt. If anyone wants to follow Coach Richt to Miami, the rest of us will understand. Just don’t come crawling back 10 years later. Coach Mullen at MSU has done more with less talent this year, and he or someone of his caliber deserve the chance to coach our Dawgs. Coach Richt has had a decade to show what he can do, now let’s move forward and quit prolonging the inevitable.

I’m honestly surprised by all the negativity towards Richt. He’s had 3 bad seasons in 10 at UGA. How many did Joe Paterno or Bobby Bowden have at their schools. The team is headed in the right direction. The defense needs to get better but you have a very good QB and TE, and O-line. Def will get better next year with more experience in the scheme. If Richt goes so do a lot of the good recruits UGA has coming in next year. If he had a bad year next year then I could understand all the arguments to fire him. Losing Richt now would do more harm than good. Not every next coach is better than his replacement, most are not.

First, no official at the University of Miami has said that Mark Richt is a candidate for the UM job. That was just some writer from the Miami Herald throwing out a few names because it’s his job to write a sports blog. Secondly, all of the Richt supporters who think that Richt can just settle in because he has a lifetime estate in athens as the coach of Georgia are dead wrong. McGarity came from UF and he has said that he wants the football program competing at a championship level and this program has slid big time in the last few years. If Richt has another season next year like he did this year then he probably will be fired. So if the UM does come calling then Richt will have something to really think about. If he stays and can’t turn it around then he is out of a job and will have lost a chance to coach Miami and recruit some big time talent. This is a real scenario to ponder.

First of all I admit I am an Auburn fan. Therefore, all of you Harvard grads can condemn my opinion. At the end of the Auburn-Georgia game as we all know a fight broke out. Gene Chizik at that time sent a coach out to get Nick Fairley off the field. Also, at the same time he made it clear to the rest of the team to stay off the field. Mark Richt on the other hand played Civil War general and allowed his men to charge the field. At that time he was telling his team to get back. but at that time they were already on the field. I have heard that going onto the field during a fight can lead to suspension for the next game. Had the SEC enforced that rule Georgia would have been short 32 players for the Tech game. All the people say Auburn is a bunch of Thugs. However, it seems to me Chizik can control his Thugs better than Richt.

It doesn’t matter if CMR goes to Miami or not. Either way the Bulldogs will just keep getting worse and worse. It is you inability to accept responsibility for your own loses that does it. Compare and contrast: UGA loses because they got outplayed by Auburn and UGA fans and CMR complain and whine that Auburn played “dirty.” Because of all UGA’s whining, Auburn’s Fairley gets called for an unfair excessive celebration penalty in the next game. When asked if he blamed the officials, Chizak said “I never blame the officials, we have to take care of that.” That is why Auburn is undefeated and UGA is praying for a bowl invitation.

There are going to be a lot of “p-off’d” Gators coming into next year…hopefully with Jordan Reed or Jeff Driskell at QB, an innovative OC hired to replace the brain dead Steve Addazio, and Randy Shannon added to the staff as the Assistant HC in charge of the defense and lead recruiter for south Florida. It wasn’t all Addazio’s fault, Johnny Brantley looked like a deer looking at headlights, held the ball longer than and locked onto one reciever like Doug Johnson did. Driskel is the ticket and should take the reins and run with it with Burton and Reed mixed in occasionaly while Brantley holds the PAT!!!!!!!!!
Shannon won’t go to G’ville cause he could never shake Urban’s hand!!!!!!!!

Interesting the amount of people wanting to hang onto Grantham as the Def coor assuming next year will be better. I have not seen anybody on the UGA D that really gets it. No one wants to make a tackle, prefering to look for a blocker to play tiddly winks with. I hold Grantham accountable for our poor effort. We may not be that tallented on D but “want to” goes along way and Grantham is in charge of playing time and motivation. I am pretty certain i could field a better D with more “want to” just from 1 dorm at UGA ( probably Russell.) I believe Richt is Grantham’s boss. Richt looks good with a tan.

San Marco

November 28th, 2010
7:28 pm

In the 1986 Jan Kemp trial, O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for UGA, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”

That trial exposed UGA for the football factory that it was, and exposed Vince Dooley as a fraud and a sleazebag. It also derailed Dooley’s plans for a political career. That’s why we see the decrepit old fraud doing TV commercials even now.

Mark Richt is just the latest in a line of sleazy UGA coaches who coddle athletes and discard them after four years of football. He recruits illiterate morons he knows aren’t smart enough for college, but he doesn’t care, as long as they help him line his pockets with millions of dollars each year.

Suntanned Saint Mark isn’t all he appears to be, is he?

7:48 pm

To Hummon, Randy, and all the other Richt-bashing idiots on here: you are absolutely-friggin-INSANE! You people have NO appreciation for what Mark Richt has done, and you all have awfully short memories don’t you?

Tell me, would you have preferred to keep Ray Goof or Moron Donnan around in the late 90s? Were you not all THRILLED when those guys got the boot? Remember, they ROUTINELY had losing seasons, missed bowls, lost to Georgia Tech, etc.

In Mark Richt’s tenure, UGA has been to three SEC championship games, winning two titles… they have been to several BCS bowls and won 7 of 9 bowl games under his leadership… we OWN Georgia Tech, snapping their 1998-2000 dominance over us… and we, more often than not, have beaten Auburn AND Tennessee.

Yeah, we’ve struggled against Florida… who hasn’t?

Some of you people amaze me… you’d think that Georgia should be Army of the 1950s or Notre Dame of the 1960s or Alabama of the 1970s, with 800 game winning streaks, dozens of conference titles, and a handful of national championships. THAT’S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. Georgia’s best hope is to return to the consistency of 2002-2007… going 10-2 every year, getting a shot at the SEC title, going to a big New Year’s Day bowl, and dominating our in-state rivals. Once in a while, we’ll beat Florida… once in a while, we’ll beat Bama… once in a while, we may get a shot at national championships.

Some of you get on here and blog about how terrible Georgia has been… well, ya know what? We are only a couple of steps behind programs like Ohio State or Texas or USC or LSU or Alabama…. yes, the last 2 years have been tough, but my god, what team DOESN’T go through hard times at least once a decade? Didn’t Bama go 4-7 not to long ago? How about the Vols going 5-7 a couple of times? Didn’t LSU go 2-9 a couple of times in the 80s or 90s? Hasn’t Notre Dame been a colossal disappointment for 5 years? Didn’t Texas fall flat on it’s face this season? What has Nebraska done since the Tommy Frazier years of 94-95? How has “the U” faired since the national title in 2000?

The fact is that Georgia will ALWAYS have a good shot because of its recruting, it’s school and alumni support, and it’s even-handed leadership under Coach Richt. If averaging 9 or 10 wins a year and winning a few SEC titles during his tenure isn’t good enough, God help whoever comes AFTER Coach Richt… if we run him off, who the hell is going to want to COME here and coach? With you people biting his heels every time he doesn’t win a championship and go 13-0?

I would MUCH rather be a proud UGA fan under a coach that kicks felons of the team (Mettenburger) than be a fan of Auburn or Florida who KEEP their felons around (Newton, Rainey). And I’d sure as heck rather be a UGA fan and know I’ve got a great shot to win each year with phenomenal athletes, rather than a Tech fan, whose team relies on a gimmicky offense and a curmudgeony coach who is full of himself.

Sorry for the mis-spellings, but I’m a a little peeved at some of you. Good luck next year, Coach Richt… let’s go win a bowl and get ready to destroy Boise in 2011!!!!! GO DAWGS!!!!!

Thank you Joe C. I’ve been saying that same thing for years. Our fans are the problem. They just accept mediocrity, which is why we continue to be mediocre. They love Richt because he gave us a few 10 win seasons. No championship mind you, but some 10 win seasons. I’m going to let you all in on a secret, all of Richt’s success can be attributed to a few simple things: Zook at Florida, Fulmer taking Tennessee down the tubes, Shula at Bama, and Gailey (with Reggie Ball) at Tech. Without these factors, Richt has no conference titles, and very few of your precious 10 win seasons. He was very fortunate to come to Georgia when he did. After his first year, Spurrier left Florida, Tenn was never the same, SC had to fight to win one game, Bama was on probation, and Auburn was secretly meeting with coaches on private jets. The SEC East was basically given to us (and we still couldn’t win it in 2003 & 2004). The 2005 title was a huge surprise, even though LSU was forced to play 13 weeks in a row with no week off due to Katrina. I guess what I am saying is that much of the success he had initially, that Richt worshipers always point to, was largely an illusion. The man was 1-2 against Zook, for God’s sake. Goff could have won the 2002 title with all the transition going on in the conference.

Mark M(. for Mediocrity) Richt

We will change his name for this blog as with the 4th or 5th best talent in the country comes out of Georgia every year and Mediocrity Richt turns them into Mediocre players when he does get them.

For those on here who say and repeat the mantra that Mark Richt is a good Christian man, and a good husband, good father. The University does not pay him to be those things, he is paid to produce a winning football team that competes for a national title every few years and to win SEC championships. Going 7-5 or 6-6 is not getting it done. Neither is embarrassing the state and university with players continously being arrested and plastered across the AJC and ESPN.

Mcgarity needs to step in NOW and tell Richt he needs to shake up his staff and bring in a hot shot strength and conditioning coach. Our players looked over powered through out the year and we were almost always gassed come the 4th quarter. I also think it’s time for Richt & McGarity to review Garner and Searel’s performances. These coaches are NOT getting enough out of their respective lines! They have no excuses left! THEY recruited each player they have and need to take responsibility for either not coaching them up or recruiting poorly. It’s one or the other.

I watched Grantham’s after game interview and was very disgusted by his general assessment and then his excuses. He sounded like a guy that wants to go back to the NFL …maybe we should let him. Is there any possible way we can coax Van Gorder back? Pay him a million bucks…who cares just get him back…could be our head coach in waiting too.

No one is debating Richt the man. There is no question he is a great individual person. However, we don’t pay him $3 million a year to spread his faith, and 90,000+ do not show up on Saturdays in Athens to see a good man lose. The bottom line is that at Georgia, a state with awesome talent, a school with unlimited resources, and a fan base that sells out every game, you better win big games, and contend for national titles. The fan bases at Bama, Florida, Auburn, Texas, and LSU would not put up with the product we’ve had on the field these last few years, and that’s why they win. Richt’s heart is just not in it. Winning is way down on his priority list, which simply does not (or, should not) cut it here.

@Joes Cox: dude, are you even a UGA alum? If so, when did you graduate? Because I’m old enough to remember when we’d have a 6-5 or 5-6 or even 4-7 season every so often (we only played 11 games way back then – sometime before electricity). Heck, we’d be giddy to have a team that finished with 8-plus wins in a season – something Richt has done all but this one! Do you really have that short of a memory?

@Jeff: I agree with you completely. If you took these same guys calling for Richt’s head, gave them the coach of their dreams, who then reeled off six seasons with ten-plus-wins, but then had two seasons with 7 or 8 wins – they’d want his butt fired just the same. I can’t believe the insanity!

@Devil: no, what is sad is the delusional thinking that any school can sustain athletic greatness year over year over year. Just like the NFL, there is parity in college football. We’ll never see another dynasty like Notre Dame or Michigan in the 70’s or Nebraska or Miami in the 80’s. Even Alabama and Florida couldn’ come close to repeating their performances of the last few years!

What you hope for is stability and consistency and a reasonable shot at greatness every so often. Which is exactly what Richt has delivered apart from the last two seasons – and one could definitely argue that those were transition years. Unless the team turns in another middling performance like this one next year, I cannot see why we would seek a change.

Why would he stay at Georgia if offered the Miami job? At Georgia he stands a good chance of finishing next season at 7-5, and that would probably mean the end. His contract would not be renewed. But he could bolt for Miami or Colorado and have at least five more years, many more if he were successful there. What would you do? If he plans to hang it up after his Georgia career, then next year could see him become “Reverend Richt” for real. Or he could turn it around, win 10 or more games and be offered another contract. Time will tell.

Please let’s not endure one more year of underperforming just to reach the obvious conclusion – it’s time for a change. Greg McGarity needs to to let Mark Richt know NOW that he will be on the hot seat if he sticks around next year. Then Mark can make an informed decision about his future and consider other opportunities. Richt going to Miami right now would be a great “homecoming” move for him on his own terms – and it’s likely better than any HC job he’d land after being run out of Athens next season.

Then, Mr. McGarity should pull out the old UF rolodex and give Dan Mullen a call – and an offer he can’t refuse. Life is short, and I don’t want to waste another year of it dealing with hopeless mediocrity AND likely losing out on a coach like Mullen, who’ll likely be moving on to greener pastures any day now.

Richt couldn’t win the East with Stafford, AJ, and Knowshon here at the same time. Seriously folks, how can anyone even imagine a scenario for future success under this coaching staff? I’ve come to realize that most of the Richt worshipers would defend him after an 0-12 season. What is it going to take people? Can you honestly not see how this Richt thing is going to end? It’s so obvious. Will the 0-2 start next year convince you? Probably not. Please be a fan of the team and not the coach. You can follow him to the next institution that hires him. Mark my words, we will struggle once again to be a .500 team next year, and we’ll be having this same debate. It’s sad, because we are capable of so much more than 10 win seasons with Outback Bowl births…and that’s as good as we are ever going to be in the future with Richt. Right now we are at a crossroads. We are very much like Florida was in the 80s–tons of talent, but nothing to show for it. Then as we all know, Florida got themselves a coach that wanted to win more than he wanted to live…the result was a title, numerous conference titles, and year in year out contention for titles. And all it took was a coach. That’s where we are…1990 Florida. All we need is a coach to make it happen. It’s right there for us to take, but our fan’s love of Richt and Outback Bowls are a constant block on the road to our success.

John Galt,

You are right on. Richt has taken us as far as he can, and that was 07 and the Sugar Bowl win over Hawaii. It’s been downhill ever since. We are not a program on the rise, we are a program that has spiraled to the bottom of the SEC alongside Vandy and Kentucky. This same time next year we are going to be right around .500 again and having this same discussion again.

It’s a sad state of affairs when we have more arrests than wins. It’s sad when our coaches stoop to juvenile antics on the sidelines giving choke signs to opposing players. It’s a sad state of affairs when Herschel Walker says there is no discpline in the program. It’s a sad state of affairs when the state’s top recruit says UGA has no discipline and says the program has lots of problems.

Total all of that up and Richt has this program in a sorry state of affairs.

Why is it all you Richt defenders call us who want to win names and say we are not fans? If you have been to Jacksonville the last 10 years like I have and had to listen to all the talk and laughter from Florida fans after the long walk out you wouldn’t be defending his coaching record. Do a little research and tell me what his record is against top 10 teams (hint – it is not good) and against top 25 teams (hint – same). Also please tell me how many of his assistant coaches over his ten years have been hired away, the sign of a good staff. This also takes a lillte research, but not very much, instead of calling names and typing unknown facts. Also please tell me which school has offered
Richt it’s head coaching job. Answer – none. His name has been mentioned as speculation by reporters but no school ADs or Presidents. So all of the talk about all the schools that want him is simply not factual. I have been a season ticket holder and contributor for 30 years, and 30 years is too long of a drought with the talent level in Ga high schools. Also if winning 2 SEC titles every 10 years is the goal, we can hire a coach for a whole lot less and still accomplish that. One last thing, will someone, anyone of you defenders, PLEASE tell me how you think we are going to be better next year. I really want to hear from you experts how we loose the 2 best, and only 2 that can catch more than a cold, receivers and 2 best defensive players and improve our recrd next year. The funny thing about this whole situation is after Georgia beat Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl, the UGA team led by Mark Richt has fallen a little each week. While Hawaii has lost it’s coach to SMU and rebuilt its program and is now ranked in the Top 25. And, right at this moment I’m looking at my two diplomas (B.A. and M.A. In History) and believe me when I say that they are more than valid. What I’m not is an elitist, who believes only grads have the right to be fans. That’s like saying only an artist can appreciate art. I saw first hand the commitment to mediocrity for our football program. It goes with the overall attitude of the school. I think I was the only non communist at the whole institution. I have been a Dawg fan since 1972, UGA operates differently than other SEC programs, kind of like a “second chance garage.” Richt not making any staff changes for 2011 basically insures that he will be dismissed after the 2011 season. There is too much mediocrity and sub-par coaches on staff. Yeah, Bobo’s play-calling provided a lot of scoring, but you can pretty much chalk that up to having AJ Green. For 2011, Green, Houston and Boykin are ALL gone regardless of the NFL situation. Only a moron would think otherwise. I guess we will just have to deal with a third season of mediocrity including likely losses to Florida (again), Tennessee, Miss State (again), and at least one or two others including Ga Tech. Kind of like 1995. Three years of mediocrity before a coaching change is made. Other schools would allow only two years, but at UGA, where delusion is king, you get that extra year.

@t-height:

So you played for Snyder at K-State? Very very cool! I think he is/was a fantastic coach.

But if you are going to be consistent in your convictions, would you the say that Snyder’s incredible accomplishments with your team and its priors were “worthless” – since he never competed for a NC? I mean, really? Would you really say that? And if so, would you say that to your old coach’s face? I highy doubt it!

Hmm?

Might Richt leave and re-join his buddy from Coral Gables, Fla. Willie Martinez in Miami for a fresh start and start working on his tan again? Although I don’t think Richt would want to work for liberal lefty UM president Donna Shalala and coach in a pitiful ACC conference. Unless things turn around dramatically at UGA next year he may be out of a job so he had better weigh his options carefully?

@IlliniDawg: If I felt that way about my coach, then yes I would say it to his face but I loved my coach and in my second year in 2003 we had a great season but we didn’t win the National Title. I’m not stating that Richt is a bad coach and your points wasn’t worth stating but you could have used some better coaches instead of those that has won a national title already and they all did it in less than 10 years of being head coach. Coach Snyder also has produced some great head coaches.
Phil Bennett (SMU), Bret Bielema (Wisconsin), Jim Leavitt (South Florida), Mark Mangino (Kansas), Dana Dimel (Wyoming), Bob Stoops (Oklahoma) and Mike Stoops (Arizona).
These are just a few of the coaches. Richt can only state one coach and he is the DC for the Falcons.

Back in the early 2000s when Richt was having so much success, I remember thinking, “One day times will not be so good and a lot of these people who are singing his praises now will turn on him.” Why is that? Why are there so many fair-weather fans? If there were blogs and fan boards in Vince Dooley’s day, I wonder if there would have been the same level of moaning after any of a number of mediocre seasons he had.

CMR you are a well balanced man, a quality coach and a great person, but unless you are willing to make the call and provide UGA with a true SEC caliber Offensive Coordinator then maybe you should consider the Miami job. I would hate to see you go, but since you became the self-proclaimed CEO of UGA football (which also leads to the downfall of offensive production), you have lost sight of UGA needs. Fire Bobo as the OC, please…Step up, call the plays or provide a quality OC…let CTG recruit the defense and bring us a QUALITY RB…If we are going to continue to run your offense then we must recruit it. A strong QB, a power back and quality WRs. AND THEY NEED TO BE COACHED. Bobo has not, cannot coach them to SEC standards…

Oh, and another thing… those of you calling for Mike Bobo’s head are IDIOTS.

The man has led an offense to an average of 40-plus points a game for over two months. Even in the losses (Florida, Auburn), we didn’t get beat 56-3… we scored 31 points a game in those! So the OFFENSE is not the problem. The problem is that our defensive coaching staff has been sub-par for several years, including this year.

Is that Richt’s fault? yes. Has he made moves to fix it? yes. Were we instantly going to have the Steelers of the 70s defense this season? no way. Will we see improvement next year? Absolutely.

Those of you who are criticizing Richt, you are so white-hot with hatred that you don’t even see the problem. The problem is our defense gave up too many big plays, too many 3rd down conversions and got too few turnovers this year. Aside from a couple of games (Carolina, Miss. St.), our offense hasn’t been half bad… 55 against the bad teams, 31 against Florida, 24 against Arkansas, 27 against Colorado, 40-plus against Tennessee, etc. etc. etc. And we got 42 against Tech, and that was enough to win, so I’ll take it!

I kinda hope Richt comes back and goes 12-0 and shuts all of you posers up next year… but part of me kinda hopes he leaves for somewhere else so he won’t have to deal with uneducated, moronic, uninformed critics like you.

Richt Must Go!

Miami, here is his phone number 706-call-4Loss

We lose a lot, and have with next year’s disappointing class, 3 years in a row of poor recruiting classes – the 2009 class is poor because those players are not here any longer. We have no where near the players for next season that we had this season.

Aaron Murray was great ? That explains why he was 2 for 7 on 3rd down conversions, sacked, fumble and failed to check out of plays to plays that did something. Were it not for 4 turnovers by the jackets, and some great bounces to us when we fumbled the ball so many times, we lose this game vs a sorry lousy no good Georgia tek team.

Mark Richt doesn’t want the Miami or Colorado job. Which one will he think does look good to him during next year’s season when 2006 lost 4, 2008 lost 3, 2009 lost 5, 2010 lost 6 and next year again 4 losses.

20 losses in 5 years and more of 4-loss seasons ahead clearly losing more talent than we add

every year now 5 in a row, going on 6 in a row.

Oh, and Mike Bobo is great since his offense is NCAA Rank # 50 Total Offense with 6 losses, beat no good team again as we did not in 2007, 2008, 2009 and now 2010. The last Top 10 Final AP Poll team we actually beat was Auburn # 9 in 2006, a year in which we were a 4-loss team.

We lost to Colorado.

We don’t beat the legitimate Top 10 teams, lose 4 games a season, don’t recruit well, lose 1 game a year average all 10 years now of CMR Era vs a not ranked Top 25 Final AP Poll team, are 13-12 vs SEC East the last 5 years, won the Fulmer Cup National Championship for most arrested / suspended in the nation, and are # 2 in Fulmer Cup standings these last 5 years.

JD

November 29th, 2010

I wonder if Richt could ever consider that the reason UGa scored so much on offense this year was because we spent so much time developing the pass and not the run, because we had to catch up in most of those games we scored so much, or we scored that much vs. LA/LA, Vandy, Kentucky, and Idaho State, OR If the offensive line spent so much time on pass blocking they could not run block, or the running backs spent so much time blocking they did not run as efficient. The others we actually had to outscore to win or score that many to be close or maybe the other good teams did not have a great defense, i.e. Tech, UF, AU….Number two team in the nation should not have that many points scored on them.

JD

November 29th, 2010
7:13 am

And another thing for him to think of, Time of possession. Sometimes we scored so fast the defense never had the chance to rest. These are things I do not think he nor the staff are considering in their evaluation of the program and its lack of success. The biggest need is Offensive Lineman and an opportunity for the backs to excel. If this is not addressed, no great running back will ever come to UGA again.

Coach Richt has won 96 games in 10 years(9.6 wins a year). Only a handful of coaches have done that. I agree this is not where UGA wants to be this year, but you gotta give the guy the benefit of the doubt. I never wanna go back to the Ray Goff or Jim Donnan days. Richt will get it straight. UGA plays in the best conference in the country and still averages over 9 wins a season for 10 years, that strong. We don’t play a schedule like Boise St, Oregon or TCU, if we did, we would have been in several BCS natl champuionship games. If UGA listened to mouthbreather fans who want to lop off Richt’s head, it would be oh so fortunate to get as good a coach AS THEY HAVE NOW. Thankfully, McGarity’s no fool and knows it. Most of these ignorant posters who want him gone have no clue.

as a GT fan who is realistic enough to know that GT will never compete with UGA year in and year out ( GT may have a year or two here and there when they win), I really hope that richt stays. this UGA slide is not a one year thing. richt has UGA on a downward slide that started several years back. I think too many UGA fans tend to give Richt a pass because he is perceived to be such a fine Christian man. It is great to be a fine Christian man, I hope my friends view me that way, but that doesn’t necessarily make either of us a great football coach. Something happened with Richt four or five years ago, I have no idea what, but things in Athens changed. Richt no longer has the “it” that the great coaches do. if Richt is allowed to stay then UGA is making the statement that they are getting comfortable with good with a very occasional great thrown in.
so my thought is if GT can’t consistently beat UGA then I will just have to be happy with the rest of the SEC beating UGA.

How many SECCs did UGA have in the 20 years prior to Richt’s arrival in Athens? How many times in the 90s did they even sniff a chance to go to the Dome and play for an SECC? ((Crickets chirping)).
Naysayers point to the other SEC schools who’ve won MNCs. Agreed. However even in the best year, it’s still a crap shoot. Remember 2007 with LSU who squeaked into the BCSCG? That’s not atypical.
UGA has a wealth of H.S. talent much like Florida; however the borders get raided fairly regularly by other schools–especially those with weaker H.S. talent (e.g. Tennessee). Then there’s the “face-it” factors: such as some kids simply cannot get into UGA and wind up at other SEC schools or sign an LOI with UGA only not to make it into school after the recruiting dust settles (facts, not B.S.). Lastly, it seems like UGA always gets the “best game” from a wealth of it’s rivals (Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, Auburn, Tech, etc…) no matter WHO their coach happens to be.
Makes for a tough recipe. Richt has done MUCH better than his two predecessors–and even better than Dooley in his last seasons.

Enjoy that UGA prodding $hit: FSU is on the rise again–already owning UF this year with that wood-laying performance. Once the ‘Noles get firmly back on track, the Gators will continue their decline. The Chinless Squirrel Head won’t last much longer: he’ll implode. Flah-duh will be back to their so-so days soon–regardless of UGA.

Why in the hell would Colorado or Miami hire Richt? Maybe if they needed the Atlantic Ocean or the Colorado River parted so they could get to the other side he might be able to help them out, but if they need someone to lead them out of the wilderness to a winning football program they would have the wrong descipile. I hope McGarity doesn’t let Richt’s agent use this ploy as an excuse to give him an extension. Actually Miami would be better off keeping Shannon because his record is no worse than Richt’s for the last two years!!!

Richt isn’t going to Meeami! Publix offered 4 tickets for $47 for the UM-USF game and all the vaunted “U” could get to come was 27,000 fans! They’re the 5th best team in that state right now, but Miami is NATIONWIDE, right? Well, at least their bandwagon fans are! When they are down, they are USC Trojan fans, now that both are down, instead of typing all day like pimple faced teenagers bally-hooing the team, they’re over on some other website dowloading gangsta rap, checking out gold prices and 22″ rims for their bycycles!
Speaking of BANDWAGONS, nice to see the Criminole Nation coming out of the woodwork beating their chest like they beat the second coming Tim Tebow or Danny what’s his name. As for Richt saying ” this is where I want to be when I quit coaching” When he decides to do his missionary work full time in Honduras. His mind is elsewhere, gang. Elsewhere he is.

2011 is coming up fast and it will be exactly like 2009 and 2010. Wath the ugly recruiting class upcoming if you doubt me. THAT will tell us what we are gonna be like in 2013 and 2014.

Dooley and the Vols should have won against LSU.
Richt and UGS should have lost against TECH.
People keep cheering for Richt all you want. Nobody else with a good job wants him. Nobody has ever called about their interest in BOBO. What more do you Richt lovers need to know.

Perspective

November 29th, 2010
10:17 am

For all those calling for Richt’s head and Bobo’s for that matter before you’re so sure that the grass is definitely greener on the other side consider the following:

1979 UGA goes 6-5, many call for Dooley’s head citing a mediorce record and lack of consistency in that he couldn’t seem to string to good seasons together.
1980 – UGA goes 12-0 under Dooley wins National Championship and first of 3 consecutive SEC championships. 1981’s sole loss comes to eventual National champion Clemson, 1982 UGA plays Penn St for national title.

The following is FSU’s record the 6 seasons prior to their historic run of consecutive top 5 finishes:
81: 6-5
82: 9-3
83: 8-4
84: 7-3-2
85: 9-3
86: 7-4-1
Bobby Bowden would have been fired by UGA fans before 88.

Finally: Granthum IS a good DC. The first year of switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 is always rough. Add to the fact that Granthum and staff had to un-coach bad habits while installing new schemes and terminology.
When Bama hired Nick Saban his first year 3-4 defense yielded an avg of 22pts per game and they suffered back to back losses to Miss St and LA-Monroe LATE in the season.
The following year their defense yielded 14.2 pts per game, the next year (their national championship run) they gave up only 11.7 per game.

Also realize that had K.Smart taken the UGA DC job, Granthum was on Saban’s speed dial and would have been Bama’s DC this year.

Last year all Dawg fans did was whine and cry about W.Martinez. Fire Willie, Willie has to go. Richt got rid of him and brought in a quality coach in Granthum and now everyone wants him gone because he’s not a miracle worker and hasn’t INSTANTLY turned UGA’s defense into a top 5 one.

Last thing: while Bobo has deserved his fair share of blame for losses and lack of scoring in the past, you can’t overlook the fact that this year’s team has AVERAGED over 30 pts a game! Now people are still p*ssing and moaning, WHY?! Because he didn’t average 40 or 50 pts a game?! Don’t get me wrong he has his head scratching moments, but guess what they ALL do!!

Be careful what you wish for, you may get it and in the end may regret giving up what you had!

ocmom,

My question is why were we going for it on 4th down? We were in field goal range, a FG would have put us up by 4 points, meaning Tech would need a touchdown on their last drive. We didn’t make the 1st so Tech could have won with a FG. Luckily Tech didn’t move the ball down the field. Bad decision I thought.

Richt is our Bobby Cox actually. Cox won in 1995 but never did anything after that, but the Braves kept him around forever and couldn’t get rid of the guy! They had to wait it out until he retired.

I see the same thing happening at UGA. Richt has already accomplised as much as he’s going to. Now we are stuck with him. Get ready for many more years of mediocrity and .500 seasons. Nobody at UGA has the guts to get rid of him, just like nobody within the Braves organization had the guts to get rid of Cox.

We are going to have to wait it out until Richt decides he wants to do something other than coaching. It’s going to be a long and painful wait, just like it was for Bobby Cox.

What thugs and gangbangers are you talking about specifically? Outside of Michael Lemon – who was dismissed from the team btw, everyone else who has gotten in trouble has been for either a traffic violation or underage drinking. Most of you idiots have ZERO football acumen!!!

Always looking for the next big thing.

With a fan base that will turn on you quicker than a rattlesnake at the first sign of trouble who would want to come coach at UGA?

Fans wanted Dooley gone BEFORE he won a championship
Fans wanted Goff gone shortly after he was hired because he wasn’t Dooley
Fans wanted Donnan gone because he couldn’t get the Dawgs over the hump
and had lost control of the team, yet all he did was go 10-2, 9-3, 8-4, and 8-4 his last 4 seasons, but that 8-4 slide while losing to rivals couldn’t be tolerated
Now Richt is next on the chopping block 90 + wins two SEC titles and one truly bad season, now everyone wants him gone. You all cried for Willie to be gone and the man got rid of him, and you don’t even want to give him the benefit of the doubt one more season when he had his BEST player out the first 4 games, a redshirt freshman QB, and a brand new defense. Yet other than the Auburn game, we were within a score or so of being able to win. how different would everyone’s opinion be if we’d pulled out say 3 of those games and were sitting at 9-3 instead of 6-6? People would be excited about the direction of the program and what lies next season. We’re only a couple bounces of the ball our way from that.

Some say we our assistants aren’t looked at for other jobs if they were and we were losing them then the line would be “Why can’t Richt keep his assistants?!”

There is absolutely NO satisfiying some Dawg fans. With the pattern of how coaches are treated WHAT COACH would WANT to come to UGA. We’ve got a good man and a good coach who WANTS to be here, and yet we’ve got a football ignorant bunch who wants him gone.

Now you want Dan Mullen because he’s the new “next big thing” and based on what? because he was the O-coordinator at Florida during the Tebow years and had a decent first year at Miss St? If he got here and doesn’t win it all in 3yrs you’ll be crying for the next flavor of the month.
That’s why we won’t ever get a “big time” coach. Who would want to come to UGA under those circumstances.

Thank you JYD!!!

You idiot fans wonder why we can’t get top talent to come to UGA?

Look no further than the mirror. Why would any decent recruit want to go to a school with a bunch of bi-polar fans?!

Sept – “Thanks for ruining our season AJ!, What an idiot for selling his jersey!, Way to put the team first, go on to the NFL who needs you!”

Nov- “One more year! ONE MORE YEAR! AJ PLEASE come back!”

Fast forward to Feb:
If he stays: “Damn good Dawg!!! WHOOOHOOO!!! AJ’s Back, you da man AJ, we love you!!!!”

If he opts for the NFL: “Thanks for nothing! (a few will be classy and thank him for his acomplishments)Most will say: “Good luck in the NFL, thanks for selling your jersey and ruining last season. Your legacy could’ve been Herschel like, now you’re along with Knowshon and Stafford all hype, but didn’t win a d*mn thing while you were here. We’re better off without another “me” player who puts himself above the team”

It was the same thing with Stafford and Moreno.

You people are too STUPID to realize that recruits read these blogs too. Why would the top recruits want to come to a school where the fanbase is about as loyal as a two-dollar wh*re?

Coaching is important don’t get me wrong but it’s more about the jimmy’s and joe’s than the x’s and o’s. You guys do nothing but help other coaches’ recruiting. Saban, Meyer and co. would never publiclly admit it but UGA fans are one of their best recruiting tools.

Saban to recruit: “Son, you don’t want to go to UGA, look at their blogs, their fanbase has no confidence in their coaches, who knows who’ll be coaching you in you’re junior or senior year? Do you really want to chance that when you’re trying to build your NFL stock? Besides, if you make mistakes on the field their fans will never let you live it down. Go ask Bryan Evans and his family if they had to do it all over again if they’d choose UGA.”

All you idiots cried like babies about Martinez and Richt replaced him to try and appease you. He was forward thinking and brought in a 3-4 guy which is the system that is having the most success in both the NFL and college ranks, and you don’t even want to give the man a chance to install his system proprerly before trying to run him out of town.

Bobo has improved the offense to AVERAGE 30+pts a game this season with a redshirt QB and without his best offensive weapon the first 4 games and you STILL aren’t happy.

Most fellow UGA fans are class acts and realize what we have in a staff. but we have a lot of turds in the punch bowl. Sometimes I don’t think some of you are happy UNLESS you have something to b*tch about when it comes to UGA football.

If you DON’T want to support the team through the good and the BAD then PLEASE find another team to root for.

“Fire him!!! He’s had at least two Champuionship teams and hasn’t even won the SEC….”

Last I checked He won two SEC titles and played for a third losing to eventual national champ LSU.

National championships are NOT the way to measure a coach’s success, there is too much luck involved, and if the luck doesn’t go your way you’re left out in the cold.

2002 UGA is 11-1 come bowl time but is locked out of the National championship game because there are two undefeated teams. one of which (OSU) won 5 games by 3pts or less. they drop any one of those and Richt plays for the title in year 3.
2004 UGA is 8-0 heading into the UF game. DJ Shockley is having a monster year but during that 8th win on the road in Arkansas suffers a knee sprain and is out for the UF game, then comes back in a valiant effort against Auburn the following week only to lose a close game. We win the SEC but missed out on a National title shot.

2006 UF needs FOUR teams to LOSE in the last two weeks of the season to even be in the discussion, they are LUCKY as the four teams they need to stumble do and get to the game. Meyer has his team in position again in 2008, but with one loss needs help once again to get there. Now much like UGA this year he’s breaking in new coordinators and a QB and is a 3pt overtime win against UGA away from being 6-6 themselves.

Difference is I don’t hear a bunch of UF fans calling for Urban’s head and thinking the sky is falling.

Wonder what Richt could do if he didn’t have to constantly look over his shoulder at bunch of idiot fans calling for his head every ten minutes!

Richt will not be fired, and does not deserve to be fired based on what he has accomplished in his first five seasons. However if the expectation is for him to compete with Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU and possibly Tennessee it will not happen with this coaching staff. It seems Richt is comfortable with Bobo as OC and playcaller having made reference to the record number of points scored.
But is it correct to look at points scored, considering 40+ points against a weakened Vols team, Kentucky, and Vandy.
Georgia under Richt may go back to winning 9 or 10 games but will not see the SEC Championship except watching it like me, but I believe that will be ok with most Bulldogs fans.

It is in the works folks, they are reporting in Miami that Richt has been contacted and the announcement will come within a week. Guess you can start wondering who your next coach will be. Muschamp? Smart? Mullen? Who knows, but in the long run it will not matter, you will always be a second tier program. Might as well accept it

No doubt about it, CMR will leave for a superior program with better talent and an much better shot at winning a title. I called it 3 years ago, and this is right on track. Eveyone on this blog thought I was off the mark when I called CMR going back to Miami, but he is, because he wants a better program.

When he wins his title at Miami, everyone in Athens will be mad as hell, but it will only prove, the problem with the Dogs is not CMR, but the entire program. 118 years and only 1 title…..unbelieveable how much Athens tolerates losing.

I know you won’t believe me, and that is fine, but I guarantee that Mark Richt will be announced as Miami’s new coach within 2 weeks at the absolute latest. He HAS already been contacted and is now working on the financial aspect of the deal. Miami is working with Georgia on the buy-out. Go ahead and bash me, and question my credibility, but I tell you again with 100% certainty that Coach Richt is leaving for Miami.

Owl- Murray is good and will continue to get better, but not under Harbaugh. He has aspirations of heading back to the NFL. TCU’s Gary Patterson heads the UGA list closely followed by two home guys. Muschamp and Smart.

The Owl of Prophecy

U…that may be true; however, Muschamp and Smart will not be seriously considered. I hear that Harbaugh wants the UGA job, and with the conference, athletes available in-state, and prestige, it would be a stepping stone. And that’s probably OK, as today’s coaches tend to get burned out in 5 seasoms.

Oh yeah, Baby. Those thugs at the Univ of Miama would surely benefit from da Preacha Man’s sermons and religion. Miami might like his Koolaid, too. At least for awhile…

This would take away the problems associated with the Three Million Dollar man’s big buyout, so I think that the Bulldawg Nation should take up a collection to help Miami convince Mr Wrecked and his incompetent staff to go south. With a little luck, Bozo and Grantham would go with him. Grantham has proven to be a total bust himself…

I used to think that Dawg Fans had some sense but after reading these comments I am beginning to think that people in GA are smoking something new – called “stupid”. The problem is that most of the comments come from people who have never coached above the Tee Ball or Pee Wee football league. Does anyone remember what Vince Dooley’s record was the three years before Herschel Walker showed up in Athens? Let me help you….5-6, 9-2-1, 6-5….I guess all you Richt bashers would have been running Vince out of town too? Yep..must be smoking “stupid”! Listen..if you coach long enough in the SEC you are going to have some down years….but there is not a better coach out there than Mark Richt. Everyone agrees that the defense needs help but the 7-6 Dawgs are only 3-4 plays (fumbles) away from being 11-2. Take it from someone who has coached on the college level and stop smoking “stupid”.

I don’t care what happens with Richt or UGA but Richt is not an elite college football coach. If the goal is to be a top team year after year, they need to find someone else. If the goal is to do what they’ve done in the last 5 years (not bad but nothing spectacular), then keep him.

Coach don’t even think about Miami! You are a fixture at UGA. So a few game we lost this year, because of the defense, it will improve next year and the year after. The 3-4 is a pro defense and the young kids at UGA have not picked up the defense. It will take a year or two. Hang loose and forget about Miame. You are a DAWG!!!

Miami is perfect fit for Richt….they don’t recruit European-Americans for the defense either…..meanwhile Oregon and TCU and Stanford and Wisconsin…with lots of European-Americans playing defense are all ranked in the top five…..LMAO at the discrimination and lack of diverstiy at UGA….seriously, is there not one white guy who can play defense for UGA…..Richt wouldn’t have recruited Jake Scott (Superbowl MVP) or Scott Woerner….pathetic.

I assume you haven’t noticed that under Richt’s watch our D went away and our strength & conditioning left with it. All programs have down years, but it’s usually due to graduation. Look at Bama, not the team they we’re last year but still not bad. Richt’s teams are bad because his coaching selections were horrible and he doesn’t have the balls to fix the problem.
I fired a man today because he couldn’t get it done. It’s a hard thing to rock someones world like that, but if you want to stay on top it has to be done.
