Richt says he hasn’t been approached by Miami, ‘absolutely’ plans to stay at UGA

(Updated 6 p.m.)

Georgia coach Mark Richt said late this afternoon that he has not been approached about the coaching job at Miami, his alma mater, and that he “absolutely” expects to remain the Bulldogs’ coach next season.

South Florida newspapers today mentioned Richt among possible candidates for the Miami opening that was created with Saturday night’s firing of coach Randy Shannon. Earlier this month, the Denver Post reported that Colorado would like to speak with Richt about its coaching vacancy.

“I’ve got the same answer for [the Miami speculation] as I had for the other one: Georgia is my home, and it’s where I want to finish my career,” Richt said.

Pressed on whether he would entertain the possibility of the Miami job if approached, Richt replied: “Just like I’ve been saying, man, Georgia’s my home, and that’s where I want to be. I don’t think you’ve got to go any farther than that.”

The Miami Herald today listed Richt among “potential candidates” to replace Shannon. The Palm Beach Post listed Richt among “possible replacements.”

The speculation was not surprising. Richt is a graduate of Miami, where he played quarterback under coach Howard Schnellenberger. Richt is 96-33 in 10 seasons as Georgia’s coach.

When the Miami job last was open after the 2006 season, Richt was mentioned as a possible candidate before immediately saying he was not interested.

Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity has said Richt will return as the Bulldogs’ coach next season.

Richt, who fired three assistant coaches in the week following last year’s victory over Georgia Tech, was asked today if he is considering staff changes now. He said he is not.

He expressed support for offensive coordinator and play caller Mike Bobo.

“If I’m not mistaken, we broke some kind of school record with [seven] consecutive games of over 30 points, and a lot of really good things happened offensively,” Richt said. “The bottom line is whoever calls plays is going to get critiqued, going to get criticized. It’s just the nature of the beast.”

FIRE MARK RICHT NOW. I don’t care what he wants or who Miami wants I wants him gone from UGA. Here is the truth. The record was worse in 2008 than 2007. The record was worse in 2009 than 2008. The record was worse in 2010 than in 2009. What do all you Richt loving idiots see that makes you think this is working.

In the 1986 Jan Kemp trial, O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for UGA, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”

That trial exposed UGA for the football factory that it was, and exposed Vince Dooley as a fraud and a sleazebag. It also derailed Dooley’s plans for a political career. That’s why we see the decrepit old fraud doing TV commercials even now.

Mark Richt is just the latest in a line of sleazy UGA coaches who coddle athletes and discard them after four years of football. He recruits illiterate morons he knows aren’t smart enough for college, but he doesn’t care, as long as they help him line his pockets with millions of dollars each year.

Suntanned Saint Mark isn’t all he appears to be, is he?

I guess no other school has ever had down years? Look at Texas and what happened to them this year. Mack Brown gets every player in Texas he wants and what was their record this year? UGA needs more talent on D and a big power running back. Get those and UGA will be fine. CMR will turn this around, but I could not blame him for leaving if he wanted to return to Miami.

To Hummon, Randy, and all the other Richt-bashing idiots on here: you are absolutely-friggin-INSANE! You people have NO appreciation for what Mark Richt has done, and you all have awfully short memories don’t you?

Tell me, would you have preferred to keep Ray Goof or Moron Donnan around in the late 90s? Were you not all THRILLED when those guys got the boot? Remember, they ROUTINELY had losing seasons, missed bowls, lost to Georgia Tech, etc.

In Mark Richt’s tenure, UGA has been to three SEC championship games, winning two titles… they have been to several BCS bowls and won 7 of 9 bowl games under his leadership… we OWN Georgia Tech, snapping their 1998-2000 dominance over us… and we, more often than not, have beaten Auburn AND Tennessee.

Yeah, we’ve struggled against Florida… who hasn’t?

Some of you people amaze me… you’d think that Georgia should be Army of the 1950s or Notre Dame of the 1960s or Alabama of the 1970s, with 800 game winning streaks, dozens of conference titles, and a handful of national championships. THAT’S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. Georgia’s best hope is to return to the consistency of 2002-2007… going 10-2 every year, getting a shot at the SEC title, going to a big New Year’s Day bowl, and dominating our in-state rivals. Once in a while, we’ll beat Florida… once in a while, we’ll beat Bama… once in a while, we may get a shot at national championships.

Some of you get on here and blog about how terrible Georgia has been… well, ya know what? We are only a couple of steps behind programs like Ohio State or Texas or USC or LSU or Alabama…. yes, the last 2 years have been tough, but my god, what team DOESN’T go through hard times at least once a decade? Didn’t Bama go 4-7 not to long ago? How about the Vols going 5-7 a couple of times? Didn’t LSU go 2-9 a couple of times in the 80s or 90s? Hasn’t Notre Dame been a colossal disappointment for 5 years? Didn’t Texas fall flat on it’s face this season? What has Nebraska done since the Tommy Frazier years of 94-95? How has “the U” faired since the national title in 2000?

The fact is that Georgia will ALWAYS have a good shot because of its recruting, it’s school and alumni support, and it’s even-handed leadership under Coach Richt. If averaging 9 or 10 wins a year and winning a few SEC titles during his tenure isn’t good enough, God help whoever comes AFTER Coach Richt… if we run him off, who the hell is going to want to COME here and coach? With you people biting his heels every time he doesn’t win a championship and go 13-0?

I would MUCH rather be a proud UGA fan under a coach that kicks felons of the team (Mettenburger) than be a fan of Auburn or Florida who KEEP their felons around (Newton, Rainey). And I’d sure as heck rather be a UGA fan and know I’ve got a great shot to win each year with phenomenal athletes, rather than a Tech fan, whose team relies on a gimmicky offense and a curmudgeony coach who is full of himself.

Sorry for the mis-spellings, but I’m a a little peeved at some of you. Good luck next year, Coach Richt… let’s go win a bowl and get ready to destroy Boise in 2011!!!!! GO DAWGS!!!!!

The selfish part of me hopes that Greem and Houston will return We all want to see AJ cut loose for a complete senior season (hint, A. J., save the jersey, sell it LATER!!), and Houston can be the anchor for a defense desperately in need of one. Please stay, guys, but I don’t think anyone would blame them for taking good NFL money. The flip side of going pro this year is that with a potential lockout on the horizon, this could be a really lousy year to take that risk.

As for all you bandwagon Bulldogs, since you’ve already jumped off this year when things got ugly, do us all a favor and STAY THE HELL OFF!!!!! You clowns go on like you’re on ESPN’s Gameday broadcast, but 99 percent of you couldn’t coach a 6-year-old team, much less an SEC squad. Shut up and go away. Grantham’s D will improve. Murray is going to be a super studpuppy for UGA over the next three years. The future is good.

Thank you Joe C. I’ve been saying that same thing for years. Our fans are the problem. They just accept mediocrity, which is why we continue to be mediocre. They love Richt because he gave us a few 10 win seasons. No championship mind you, but some 10 win seasons. I’m going to let you all in on a secret, all of Richt’s success can be attributed to a few simple things: Zook at Florida, Fulmer taking Tennessee down the tubes, Shula at Bama, and Gailey (with Reggie Ball) at Tech. Without these factors, Richt has no conference titles, and very few of your precious 10 win seasons. He was very fortunate to come to Georgia when he did. After his first year, Spurrier left Florida, Tenn was never the same, SC had to fight to win one game, Bama was on probation, and Auburn was secretly meeting with coaches on private jets. The SEC East was basically given to us (and we still couldn’t win it in 2003 & 2004). The 2005 title was a huge surprise, even though LSU was forced to play 13 weeks in a row with no week off due to Katrina. I guess what I am saying is that much of the success he had initially, that Richt worshipers always point to, was largely an illusion. The man was 1-2 against Zook, for God’s sake. Goff could have won the 2002 title with all the transition going on in the conference.
